View Full Version : Attending concerts alone

I didn't know whether to put this is the SN forum or not but since I'm just looking for opinions on anyone's experience with any artist, here I am.
So I'm debating about going to the Stevie/Rod show tomorrow night at MSG by myself. I'll be honest, I've never gone to a concert alone so I just wondered what people like/dislike about it.
I have no problem getting to the venue/walking around NYC, that's not even part of my hesitation. It's more of just being there on your own and not having anyone to experience the show with while it's happening. I know I have everyone back here to talk to about it after the fact, which of course is wonderful.
Anyone care to share their past experiences or thoughts?
Thanks!
Amy

If you can eat alone in a restaurant, you'll be fine.

I've pretty much only ever gone to see Stevie and Fleetwood Mac alone (there are a few exceptions). I had just as good of a time, because I knew I wasn't keeping somebody there who didn't really care about the music. So that means I really got to focus on the songs, outfits, etc. Plus, when you're alone, the people around you tend to be very friendly and chatty. It's really not so bad... give it a shot!

Everyone knows about my many trips to Nashville, alone. I used to have a friend that I went with. Well, he started backing out, at the last minute. I finally said f*ck it, and went alone. And.I.have.a.better.time! Not only can I now eat anywhere I want(he would only eat at a steak place), but I've made so many new friends, as a result of being there alone. Louie's right...people are more friendly and chatty, especially if they're alone, too!

Most of the shows I've gone to are alone. I rather enjoy the freedom of doing these things without being obligated to anyone else's schedule.:)

Yep. Everyone needs to learn how to be alone. It is freeing.
And I believe it's also akin to, "if you can't love yourself, you can't love anyone else".

I've been to 2 or 3 shows alone & I prefer it in some ways - you can really focus on the show & concentrate on the performance itself.

Been to many shows alone. In saying that, most of the time, I meet somebody I know AT the show anyway. So, once inside the venue, there's someone to hang with...then we go our merry ways afterwards. If I should happen to NOT run into somebody I know, then I often get to know the people around me (despite my "perceived image" here, I'm not THAT much of a "grump" in person).

If you're alone you don't have to worry about losing anybody when you're trying to sneek into the front "VIP" area ;)

True, but you don't immediately have anybody to set your bail if you get busted, either. That would be the downside of going alone.

There is that technicality, lol. But I'm blessed with a small frame, so I can easily hide if need be. I got to the front of an R.E.M. concert by crawling between people's legs XD

Keep the info coming. You're giving me some good ideas! Who knows what the night might bring!

You bring up another excellent point - it's often easier to get a good seat if you're only looking for 1. I've gotten front row 3 times by checking ticketmaster/tickets.com the day or two before the show (and I needed 2 tickets!) Go for it!

I too have been to several show's alone. One of the perks is you can spend more money on yourself!! If your taking a date or spouse the tickets can go from $100.00 to $200.00 and its sometime easier to find 1 seat then 2 close to stage, I say "go for it"!!

Haven't been able to pull up anything on the floor yet. Just the first ring around the floor. Which I'm not opposed to at all, especially since for this show, there's supposedly no edge walk.
I've been checking stubhub and craigslist too. Thinking people are getting desperate to unload.
I usually go to Stevie/Mac shows alone these past years.

I've been to quite a few concerts alone and always had agreat time. You already have something in common with everyone there and so yes, people are often very chatty. Also you can get to the front much easier! I'm actually going to a (Kylie) concert on my own on Monday,

i have never gone to a show alone but a good girlfriend of mine goes alone to alot of shows. it kinda makes me nervous for her because she is the type that will talk to anybody and is very naive. i always tell her when she leaves the show to hurry up and get to her car and to be aware of her surroundings.
if there ever is a show i cant get anybody to go with me in the future i might try it. i dont really even talk that much anyway so it could be a better time!

Alone is the way to go but now that my fiance is as into music as much as me he comes along but I run the show so it's not that bad.

I love going alone.
As others have said, it's a lot easier to get a really good seat when you're only buying one, and secondly, I don't know that I have any friends willing to pay what I would for a good seat :-)
It's like going to a movie alone, which I also enjoy. You're in a dark room, watching someone/something entertain you. You aren't there to talk to the person you're with, so who cares if you're alone?

I go alone, too. I don't mind it....especially when it is standing room only. You meet a lot of different people when you are not focused on who you are with.

I saw 7 shows on the SYW Tour, & the last show in Houston (where I lived at the time) I saw alone. I had seen an earlier stop there with a friend. This time I did not even get a ticket until right before (scheduling conflicts at the time), but in the end I thought I'd be angry to distraction if I missed a show near my home. So I got a cheap seat & just chatted a bit with strangers.
A few years ago at a Dallas show I had 3rd row with friends (and other friends were on the grass) but then got front/center at the last moment, so in a way I was by myself. Obviously, one finds more diehard fans in that section than up in the rafters, so it's easier to make smalltalk.
One thing I will not do is bring a date to a Stevie/Mac show. I learned the hard way that there is inevitable tension (WW3 level) arising from, on one hand, my desire to hear the show without any interruption, and on the other, a girlfriend's desire for attention & aversion to being shushed.
So these days my preference is to go with a friend, or to go alone.

Haven't been to that many but I've never been to one alone. My friends don't like the same music as me for the most part, but they've gone with me to see metal bands, musical comedians and my mum's gone with me to the cock rock concerts(Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Thunder etc). I have about half a dozen friends in England who like the same music as me, so that's good for when bands do "UK tours" since they leave out Wales most of them time anyway but travelling is hard when the train tickets cost twice as much as the concert tickets
DefDumbandBlond
03-26-2011, 10:24 AM
^ Yeah it's always the traveling that ruins plans. The majority of the good concerts here take place 45 min. + away. Where I live is surrounded by water so the only way you can get around is to drive through 5 thousand highways and sh*t. I wish trains were more common here as they are in the UK, it'd be much more convenient but getting a train here to go places daily would be like getting a plane - not so common.
Back to the subject, I'd have no problem going to a show alone if I could if nobody else around me wanted to go. Although I'd much rather go with my best friends anyways, unfortunately they live too far away but they are into the bands I'd want to see as much as I am. :)

I've not been to concerts alone as such but I've been with online friends. I know that if I went to a Blondie show that I'd never be 'alone' because I'll always bump into someone I've talked to before.
Going with other massive fans helped in getting me to meet Debbie Harry last night ;)

I've never been to a concert alone, but will probably try it eventually. I bought my friends tickets for tonight's MSG show (wouldn't ask them to pay that much for a concert they were probably hardly interested in) and it did cross my mind that for the amount I payed for three ticks, I could have gotten one for myself in the first couple of rows.

I went to a SYW show in Ireland alone. I was in England visiting friends and family, and no one wanted to go. It was a a really great show. Definitely one of the best of that tour. I didn't mind being alone, really.

Indescribably amazing. She was so sweet, chatty and kind. There wasn't many people there, either so that made it more special.

I go to concerts alone pretty often. I love it, personally. Most of my friends don't have the same taste in music as I do, so there usually isn't a whole lot of interest to spend the money I want to spend for good seats for some concerts or, if it's GA, wait around however long it takes to get a good spot. I do love going to shows with friends when they really do want to be there, but I find that going alone, you meet more people who are into it the same way you are to meet up with the next time the band is in town! If I hadn't been open to going to shows alone, I'd have missed SO many good shows and some amazing experiences. I can't imagine not doing it!

I don't think there's anything wrong with going to a concert alone! I went to see FM during the SYW Tour in Phx alone and I had a ball!!!!! I figure if you're seeing your fav band then who cares who's standing next to you! Just rock out and try not to strain your voice like I do everytime lol!!!

junping right in;
met a few people at MSG who were first time Stevie show attendees,
met a few people who were first show attendees,
met one young lady who had the balls to move from the 6th row centre to the 3rd row centre, next to me, seats 1,2,3, &, 4 were unoccupied,
she had a graet time, (on her own),
she had never head about the Ledge, as had not others,
so, the secret it, do it, do not feel that you can not go on your own,
"just do it",
see you there..........................................

I enjoy going to concerts alone. If it's far to travel (more than an hour) I'd probably prefer to go with a friend, and it can be nice to get excited about the show beforehand and have somebody to reminisce with, but generally I don't at all mind being alone.
It's easier to focus on the music more if there's nobody shouting in my ear  Having said that, if you feel lonely there's always people around whose conversations you can jump in on. After all, you already have one thing in common - you're there to see the same band!

Sh*t, other than FM and the Eagles, I listen to country, almost exclusively. And almost none of my friends even LIKE country, let alone want to go to a concert, or Nashville.
Oh well, fukc em. I've learned to just go, and have a good time by myself. They can have their damned Lady Gaga!:p

I have strange taste in music so it's hit or miss if I'll have somebody with me. For example in the next few months I'm going to:
Rammstein - with my boyfriend, and two younger brothers
Janet Jackson - with my mother
Kylie Minogue - alone
Adele - alone, maybe with my cousin

I did end up going to the MSG show. I posted a few pics and videos on the MSG thread for anyone who hasn't checked it out and is interested.
It really was a good experience, although being surrounded by Rod fans was less than spectacular. This guy next to me just sat there and luckily the girls in the seats next to me didn't show up till after Stevie's set, so i was up dancing around.
Trying to get a friend on board for Borgata, but if not, I'm seriously thinking about heading down anyway.

I was in the lower loge area and didn't have a problem at all. Someone glanced in my purse when i walked in and that was it.
I thought I read a review or two where people closer to the stage were being more closely monitored.
But there were tons of flashes going off, so I doubt you'll have much of an issue.
Have a wonderful time!

I am very particular about who I go to concerts with, after having to leave a Metallica concert after my friend said she suddenly felt sick! Unfortunately I forgot this and took a friend to the NH Unleashed show. She griped about the seats (front row!), saying she would prefer to be up in the nosebleeds so she could glower at the performers. Suddenly I remembered how ****ing weird she is, and why I take her in very small doses. She then proceeded to announce to everyone in earshot that she never wears a bra . I ignored her for the rest of the evening and prayed she wasnt making angry faces at Lindsey. She later confessed that she loved the show and thought they were incredible performers, but that doesnt mean she wasnt acting stupid during the show.
I find it is best to go with people who are as nuts about the band as I am, because part of the fun is rehashing the concert afterward. If that is not possible, going alone is no biggie.
