You Are Not Alone.

She's with Dick, MJ, and Monty now.

:(

What is your favorite Liz Taylor movie? Mine is A Place In The Sun. "Tell Mama all...": certainly in the upper echelons of Hollywood romances. An expose of American greed and class, at its heart it is a movie about the mysteries of attraction and the depths of love. She's so beautiful in it that, though shot in exquisitely textured black-and-white, her violet eyes still pop. There's many more, of course, from Clarence Brown's mighty National Velvet to her definitive representations of gay empathy in Suddenly Last Summer and Reflections In A Golden Eye to her erotic breakthroughs in The Sandpiper and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to her mythic portrayal of the American daughter in Father of the Bride.

We are not alone.

sad to hear that she passed. She was a very beautiful woman, at least now she belongs to the ages...

I actually gasped out loud when I read this news on Digital Spy, a total shock and it's really sad. I had to watch Cat On A Hot Tin Roof in English Literature at AS Level, and she was amazing in it.

Even though her health had been deteriorating for years, I was still kind of shocked to read this. :(

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is prob. my favorite movie of all-time.

A Place in the Sun is another favorite. The problem I had with Suddenly Last Summer & Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is that they went to such lengths to purge the films of any reference to homosexuality, that they ended up not making much sense.

I seriously couldn't believe what I read when I saw it this morning. I'm still trying to get the lump in my throat to go away. :distress: Will love & miss her forever.

Oh dear. :distress:

Considering the numerous times she has cheated death in the past, I guess I was under the assumption that she was immortal. I remember reading my first issue of Life magazine and Liz Taylor was on the cover with the headline "Liz Taylor at 50." Whew, that was a while ago!

I can't believe I remember it so vividly! I thought she was simply the most stunning woman who ever lived. Her personal life was a hot mess, but she always maintained an air of dignity and took the high road with her career and her charity work. What an extraordinary individual and an extraordinary life.

I read the title of this thread and said "WHAT" out loud. How awful and sad, she'll be missed :(

I don't know how I feel about Liz Taylor. Yes, she championed the Aids cause, but she struck me as a creature of needs and entitlement.

I do not understand this statement at all. She really was the FIRST mainstream, high profile Hollywood celebrity to take up the fight for AIDS research and care. She had everything to lose by taking such a fearless stand on what was considered to be a "gay disease" - a taboo that nobody else would touch. What "needs and entitlement" are you referring to? Just because she was the first woman in Hollywood to be paid $1 million to star in a movie (Cleopatra)? Just because she took a hard line against a studio system known for exploiting starlets? If demanding what she feels she is worth is "entitled," then I think we could all benefit from a little bit of "entitlement."

Was never really a big Liz fan, the film I like most of hers is Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Taylor and Burton reunited at last

This is such a loss. I really can't find the right words to say. I've admired Elizabeth Taylor so much, and like everyone else, I think a little part of me thought she was immortal. She's left so much good behind her, though.

Goodbye Liz.

Clepoatra was my favorite movie that Elizabeth was in. I remember one weekend my parents and siblings were out of town camping; I was maybe 15 and it was the first time I was left home alone for an entire weekend. I bought a half gallon of mint choclate chip ice cream and settled in on the couch that friday night to watch a movie on HBO. I've always been fascinated by history, and Egypt in particualar.

I ate that entire half gallon of ice cream while watching Cleopatra.

- - - - -

To really tell my story would be indeed difficult
Because of all the different people involved.
Not that there is anything bad written
It’s just all terribly personal
Or maybe I’m just terribly possessive.
My life has been, if I go not a day longer, quite extraordinary.
The happy things have been written with great joy
The tragic things with great care
And the secrets have not been written at all so that no one would ever be hurt by anything I would ever say.
That is not the purpose of my writing
My purpose is to document this incredible adventure before the years have become too clouded
To really remember what a truly incredible experience my life has been.

Right now I live at the top of Old Queens Road and Franklin
And yes, I do have a movie star view
Some say I have everything -
I wonder sometimes if anyone ever really knows what everything is.

Have you got any heart at all?
Yes, and it’s going to stay right where it is.
A musical western, and we all play the parts
But when the play is over, what do you do -
Become overnight casual friends?

You can lose your dreams or keep them
And the unridden horses ride away
And the sons of the prophets are deeply, deeply hurt
And your chances of returning to your past are gone.

Your heroes are dying,
The old ones, the great ones - The ones that you looked up to aren’t looking so good any more
And the ones that are growing up are crazier than we were
But a war can always be won
Well if there is the sense in trying
Not much is really secret anymore
We all grow up and the veils come down…
But the children go on.

A place in the sun
Giant
Cat on a hot tin roof
Who's afraid..

There are a lot...
I liked Cleopatra but just the first part, before the intermission. Then it turns too heavy, slow.

She is great. She was the best.

I hope she starts to be reappraised and reappreciated as an actress thanks to the inevitable season of her movies that wull now be on TV. She was a great actress and at her peak was famed for being not only a great beauty but a great actress. It's kind of a shame that all of the hoopla surrounding her marriages, personal life and health had overshadowed that in the last 20 years or so.

We still have Olivia DeHavilland, Lauren Bacall and Doris Day...

I was so shocked when I read this today :( Got a huge lump in my throat that won't seem to go away. Such sad news. I know her health had been going down for a while, but I still wasn't expecting this.

She was truly a beautiful person all around. The nicest compliment I ever recived being told I had eyes like hers (which I really don't, but they thought I did, and I've always been so awestruck by Liz that what they said has stuck with me for years)... may she rest in peace.

Her and Montgomery Clift, those upclose screenshots of their faces side by side- most gorgeous onscreen couple ever. "A Place In The Sun" will always be my favorite Liz film, right at the peak of her beauty before Hollywood jaded her and her health became a turbulent rollercoaster ride. And then of course Monty is in it...what a star.

I'm sad but also relieved she won't have to suffer. She did a lot of good in this world, and the mark she left is etched forever.

Fave Liz quote: "You can't cry on a diamond's shoulder, and diamonds won't keep you warm at night. But they're sure fun when the sun shines."

Icon.

Elizabeth Taylor has always been my favorite "old Hollywood" actress. You see Marilyn Monroe praised and admired ad nauseum but Liz is my #1. Such a beautiful person inside and out.

Favorite movie? Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her and Paul Newman were stunningly gorgeous.

RIP, Elizabeth. :(

She was born with a mutation. She grew a double set of eyelashes. It really helped her eyes stand out.

Film critic Armond White is a good friend of mine. This is what he tweeted after hearing and reflecting upon the sad news:

Imagine the 20th Century without Elizabeth Taylor, the ideal of beauty, passion and humanity.

Exactly! She's been in poor health pretty much my entire life, so I'd just expected her to keep trucking on for a couple more decades! I certainly would have expected Zsa Zsa to have passed before Liz considering her current situation :distress:.

I think she won't be too far along. She was hospitalized again today :(
And Idk, this news really didn't shock me. I spent the whole week last week at my job in Midland at a grocery store and all the tabliods had god awful pictures of Liz and talking about her failing health. I could just tell she didn't have much longer.

It amazes me that Zsa Zsa has gotten this far, to be honest with you. How many times has this woman been given the last rites, exactly? She must be as stubborn as my great Grandmother. She was given them three times, twice leaving the hospital a couple of days later, obviously the third time being the real deal. But when you see pictures of Zsa Zsa in the papers and other media lately she looks barely full of any life.

This was indeed sad news. My favorite movies of hers were Butterfield 8, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (she was a great Maggie) and Raintree County and A Place in the Sun, both with Monty Clift.

She did so much in the fight against AIDS. She will be missed. :(

Wow, I always hated RC with a passion but perhaps I should give it another go. I loved Monty in it, as he could rarely do anything wrong. Flawless actor.

The other films you mentioned are wonderful. My favorites of hers are "A Place In The Sun," "Giant," and "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" Elizabeth Taylor + Richard Burton= all kinds of greatness.

Part of my liking Raintree County is a sentimental attachment -- much of it was filmed in Kentucky. :) Monty was a great actor -- a little underrated, even.

Friends and family of Elizabeth Taylor may get unexpected visitors at her funeral — picketers from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Margie Phelps, daughter of the hate group's leader Fred Phelps, tweeted Wednesday that they would picket Taylor's funeral, most likely because of Taylor's gay friends and humanitarian work against AIDS. Phelps also tweeted several attacks on Taylor, including "RIP Elizabeth Taylor is in hell as sure as you're reading this & getting mad as a wet hen. She should've obeyed God. Too late!"

Taylor was a prominent AIDS activist, starting the American Foundation for AIDS Research after the 1985 death of Rock Hudson. In 25 years, the foundation raised over $100 million.

It's funny, but I always though tolerance was the biggest focal point of mos religions. If she clearly holds that much hate in her heart, then it sound as though she's writing out her own ticket to hell. Not that I believe in it or heaven personally.
