View Full Version : Secret Love picking up major increases at AC radio;

Mediabase's Spincrease chart tabulates current singles with the most increase in spins and in the number of stations playing them.

Stevie is at #10 on this week's Adult Contemporary (AC) Spincrease chart, which is remarkable considering the single was only serviced to radio a few weeks ago. The AC chart is painfully slow to embrace new songs - just look at the gray whiskers on nearly all of the songs above her on this and the proper AC chart. Some of them have been out for over six months, while others such as Firework and F'ckin Perfect have already peaked on the Hot 100 but are finally making a showing on AC.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way has been at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the last four weeks and is breaking iTunes sales records, etc. but even she's behind Stevie. Same for Adele, which is top 20 Hot 100 hit that's had a long lifespan (Adele's album has been #1 for the last two weeks with a remarkable 600,000 copies sold in just the U.S., but AC is still playing catch up.) So, it's fair to say AC radio is embracing Secret Love and the biggest push hasn't even come yet.

On the overall AC chart, Secret Love moves up to #25.

That's great news! I haven't heard it on the radio yet, but a friend of mine tells me he hears it a lot on this one AC station.

I'm surprised. Maybe the Triple A and AC radio station's in California are lagging behind.
I just heard it again this morning on Denver/Boulder area's Triple A station: KBCO. This will be the 5th time I've heard it in just a little over a week::thumbsup: (and I don't listen that often). They played POTU a few times in 2001, but nothing like this! I think Stevie has a slow burner hit on her hands.:woohoo: Now it's time to get the video out!

I'm getting the impression that radio stations are not picking up this song. She needs a lot more radio stations to play before she can move high on the charts. The song is going to stall unless they do something.

I'm glad she's even charting at all...with the current state radio is in, the fact that she's getting play is great because she's proving you don't have to be 30 to get your song played on radio.

Britney Spears turns 30 on December 2nd. Does this mean she will hopefully, thankfully fade away in 2012??? ;)

BTW, Starz was just playing Britney's 2002 movie Crossroads (with the amazingly HOT Anson Mount ~ Wowee!!!!), and it begins with Brit's character singing in her bedroom along to Madonna's "Open Your Heart". Hmmm... Brit could sound good on a "Stand Back" cover... or "Rhiannon"!

Not only that, but while the song continues building at radio and satellite stations. You would think that the SL video would drop before this Sunday's opening H & S tour date. Because no doubt, Stevie is going to prefer people watching the Secret Love "professional" video on YouTube as opposed to the inevitable fan "live" versions sure to leak after it's opening night debut.

I would hope that Dave learned his lesson after promising a trailer back in Feb. Only to have to retract that because of WB. Last Friday, he said announcement's would be made this week and the video would be coming v.soon. So unless WB decided to hold the video closer to the release of IYD (perhaps an early April unveil) I'm optimistic that the SL video will drop in the next few days.

I thought she said she would not be doing any songs from the new album on the tour.

That was last August.

Stevie has said in 2 or 3 interviews that the only new song she will be performing on the H&S Tour is "Secret Love". Read that interview thread here on the first page.

I thought she said she would not be doing any songs from the new album on the tour.

From the Miami Herald article yesterday titled: Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks kick off tour in Broward:

"There will only be one new song on this tour — Nicks’ Secret Love, the first single from her coming album, In Your Dreams, her first solo disc in 10 years . Nicks wrote Secret Love in 1976, and its demo has been floating around cyberspace for decades.
“In this day of the Internet, if I did five new songs, those songs would be filmed badly and on YouTube in the morning. Until my record comes out in May nobody is hearing any of it. I want it to be a surprise,” she says."

Bumped to mention, that I have lost count of how many times I've heard Secret Love on the radio! Here on Denver's Adult Alternative station: KBCO - They are playing it to death! Everytime I turn on the radio, today, yesterday, last week. There it is again. And it's always announced, or in a block of songs, and the DJ makes special mention of "The new song by Stevie Nicks, from her forthcoming May3rd release In Your Dreams"! This is so awesomely shocking....and I hardly ever listen to the radio, just sporadically since SL has been released.
Anyone else experiencing this?

That's so wonderful to hear! I've still yet to hear it on the radio here in Austin, but apparently others here in town have.

Well I will say that I have forgone listening to my iPod in my car and strictly listening to the radio whilst driving. Constantly flipping thru stations to see if any are playing SL, but I still have not heard it. What station have these other Austinites heard it on??

Board member JohnnyStorms has a friend here in town who said she heard it on the radio, but cannot remember which station. The only time I listen to the radio is in the shower, and in the car. Now that the weather is nice, I'm exclusively using the Vespa... so my radio listening has been cut in half the past few weeks. I'll probably never hear it on the radio.

Oh come on Louie! You are supposed to be one of the few on my side who is ready to bash Stevie and her team for making yet another stupid ass marketing move by bringing an album back into print but doing absolutely NOTHING new to it, meaning people will leave the new copies on the shelves and buy used ones or download it off iTunes. But I concur, I am glad they will actually be in print and it may boost a few sales if Best Buy/Target/Walmart stock up on a copy or two of each of the older albums before May 3. But still, I'd like them to atleast be remastered. Le sigh...

I haven't heard it once here in Austin. KGSR will probably play something off CD just before it's released. I remember they were one of the first stations in the country to play "Silver Springs" when it came out. They would not play "Everyday," but played "It's Only Love" and later "Too Far From Texas" and "Sorcerer." They wouldn't play the CD or single version of "SYW" (too comercial) but only the live version. They probably think "Secret Love" sounds too comercial. As far as the other stations, who knows..........

Seems like more stations are not adding the song. If the song sinks further in the next 2 weeks, WBR should release a new track. Makes u wonder WTF they are thinking stalling the music video.

I'm still kind of at a loss as to why anyone would think this song would do anything, chart/sales/radio-wise.

I don't think radio stations even play artists over the age of 25 anymore, and haven't for some time. They don't even play artists who actually sing (to say nothing of playing actual instruments) - it's all done by a computer. They just need a girl to show her t!ts (or her vagina) while lip-syncing to the god-awful garbage.

I think most of us know SL is not going to burn up the pop charts:nod:. But a nice respectable showing in the Top 10 AC or Triple A format is a conceivable goal for Stevie, and should be in earshot. I'm just thinking more promotion via video, or as Hejira pointed out - advance TV performances or something should be done other than the H&S tour!
WBR is probably doing what most labels do for artists nowadays...release a song far in advance, and if that one doesn't stick....throw another bone out there.
Haven't heard all of Cheaper Than Free, not sure if it's worthy of release, but wouldn't it be just too frickin' dandy for Stevie to have her last solo hit be a duet, just as her 1st solo hit was.

Not all radio stations and music streaming internet channels are devoted to lowest common denominator Top 40 playlists.

Three weeks on Billboard's AC chart, "Secret Love" (#25) continues to move up the AC chart at the same pace as tracks by Adele, Taylor Swift, Pink, OneRebublic, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, and every other artist on the chart since the biggest mover is Bruno Mars "Grenade" at #16, which only moved up three spots from #19. Taylor Swift's "Mine" - which began its AC chart trek 30 weeks ago - moved up one spot to a peak of #4.

It's very common for a song to not gain for a week or two during its infancy, which applies to "Secret Love."

As a sidebar to each chart, Billboard lists the 10 songs with biggest jumps and biggest falls. With 3 weeks on the chart, Secret Love moved up two spots (from #27 to #25), which was one of the 10 biggest jumps on the AC chart.

Joining Stevie, Bruno & Taylor as the chart's biggest jumpers: Pink's "Raise Your Glass" moved from #12 from #11. Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts" moved two spots from #14 to #16. Biggest jumpers also includes tracks making their chart debut: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" debuted at #28, Michale Buble debuts at #20 and Sugarland's "Stuck Like Glue" debuted at #30. Plain White T's "Rhythm of Love" moved up just one spot. Most songs didn't move at all, or they fell one spot. That's how songs move on the AC chart - slowly, but they have long, long chartspans.

And it should be noted that "Secret Love" was only serviced to radio a month ago, while the other songs have already enjoyed massive success in other formats since the majority were serviced to radio in 2010. Already a #1 smash, "Raise Your Glass" topped the comprehensive Hot 100 singles chart months ago, but its taken 16 weeks it get its footing on the AC chart after gaining, losing, and regaining its bullet. Secret Love debuted higher on AC than Adele's Rolling in the Deep, which already peaked on the Hot 100 and fueled massive sales of her new CD, which returns to the #1 spot this week. Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" has wandered the chart's midsection, but stayed consistent.

Radio stations and internet channels with AC and Triple A formats drive album sales, as do other formats that are not top 40 exclusive. Last year, Sade came back from a 10 year absence to sell over half a million units in one week's time thanks to those formats.
