(CNN) -- Mike Starr, the former Alice in Chains bassist whose battle with drugs was chronicled on the reality TV show "Celebrity Rehab," was found dead in Salt Lake City, officials said.
He was 44.
Police said they responded to a call Tuesday of a possible death at a residence. The cause and manner of death were not immediately available.
Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, Starr's former Alice in Chains bandmates, released a statement, offering their support for his family. The band's original singer, Layne Staley, died from a drug overdose in 2002.
"Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy -- and the privacy of Mike's family -- during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with Mike's family," it read.
Alice in Chains, a U.S. grunge band, shot to fame in the early 1990s. Starr left the group soon after the release of its 1992 album, "Dirt."
He appeared on the third season of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."
"Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family," the doctor wrote on his Twitter page.

this is so sad to me~ his appearance on 'celeb rehab' was touching & heartbreaking~ he never got over the death of layne staley & felt somewhat responsible~ layne's mother came to see him in rehab, she wanted mike to know layne's death was not his fault & that she cared very much for mike & was rooting for him~ i was rooting for him as well~ he had said on a recent visit w/ last years cast that he had slipped up, but was sober at the time~ he was arrested last month for having pills on him~ i bet layne's mother & mike's sister are just devastated, my heart goes out to them~

RIP mike, i hope you found the peace you were seeking~

:distress: Sad. What a waste of his life & his talent. Addiction is a terrible thing.

This is awful. Alice in Chains was always the best band to come out of the whole Seattle/Grunge scene by a long shot. RIP, Mike. :distress:

I've had a few friends that have overdosed, and I'm currently struggling with addiction as well. Hearing about his death has bothered me even more because of that, I think.

Just remember if you fall, get back up again. It's part of this ugly disease and you don't need to be ashamed.
I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. :xoxo:

I agree. Layne had been sick for quite a while. When he performed he was still good although it was clear he was f*cked up. I just don't think it was a surprise to anyone.

Thank you, Brian. One thing that actually helps me through the days is music. Thank the Gods for Metal. :p

Gosh, I didn't mean to have this thread turn into my bs. Mike Starr is far more important.
