It's been about month since this single dropped. Are you guys still listening to it? Has it got any staying power in your heads?

According to the charts, quite well. It's holding its own and then some.

I know that. It's doing decent on the charts. Let's hope it surpasses Everyday which only hit #14 on that chart. The pop charts seem out of the question.
That's not what I mean though. Has your opinion changed? Does the song have any staying power in your mind?

I try to keep away from it most days because I think that, genuinely great as it is, there are even better songs waiting for us on the album. And that thought makes me jittery and giggly and excited and I can't concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing!
I suppose that means that yes, it does have staying power for me.

It's a great lead-off single to get people reintroduced to her work. When the album is released, it won't be the strongest track.
I haven't listened to it in a while because I don't want to wear it out too soon. Who knows if we'll get a second single in the next two months.

I'm not really listening to it anymore. Mostly because I've already absorbed it, and don't want to wear it out.

Haven't listened to it in the last couple of weeks, but that's not to say I never will again. It's a nice enough song, but I'm really looking forward to the album - I hope there will be some more interesting tracks on it (and it sounds like there will be).
It's too early to tell if it has "staying power" with me - 10 years later, I'm still queuing up "Sorcerer" and "Candlebright" for an occasional listen, so ask me again in a few years. :)

It's just starting to get airplay here in the Albany area. Just heard it on our classic rock station for the first time. Made my day and the dj seemed to be really digging it!

I only listened to it a few times when I first saw it out there. I couldn't believe it was the first single. I couldn't believe it was even a demo that she would ever even think of re-doing for release. It's never been a favorite of mine. I think what gets me is the "ooo-eee, listen to me" part. It always has made me sort of cringe. When I hear ooo-eee I think of "eeee" like in "eeeee! a big hairy spider!" or "sue-EEEEE! here piggy, piggy!" It just grates on me. Maybe I'm just weird though.
I wish she had changed it to "but we've already passed it, I cry, ooo-ooo, oo-ooo oo-oooo, my secret love secretly die." Or put in some quick simple line.
But it still just is not a favorite song of mine. Too simple, not overly catchy, pretty short and not many lyrics. I do like this new version better, the music is better. But still...kind of boring to me.
But I'm still looking forward to the cd. I can't wait to hear the newer songs she'll have on it.

^I agree, it would never have been a song I'd have brought out of the vault if I were Stevie. However, I'm pretty impressed at what Dave did with the musty old demo. I think it's a very decent song, and God knows, it's better than any of Stevie's singles since Rooms On Fire.
I'm surprised I haven't heard Secret Love on the radio, yet. Austin is usually pretty far ahead of the curve in regards to adding new songs to the radio before they become popular.

Ya, I do like the music of it much better. It makes me look forward to the whole cd, hearing what he did with a demo I never liked.

I, like many of you am limiting how much I'll allow myself to listen to Secret Love. The fact that every couple days I have to break my rule and "must" hear Secret Love says a lot. It is holding up. I'm very confident it's not one of the best songs on the album, I'm thinking it's got to be under the halway mark. I would be disspointed if it was as good as it gets. I would bet my house it isn't tho.
If I'm pitting it solely against the lead off singles to TISL and SYW (Stevie's songs) then it wins by a larger margin then the eagles beat the redskins on Monday Night Football this year (it was 50 something to 14 when i gave up for those who were confused by that) I can't belive the love Everyday is unrightfully getting in the non- Stevie written songs thread. It's the definition of bland. And if Stevie truly goes out of her way to release the most middle of the road "commercial" sounding song first and Secret Love is as middle of the road as it gets, I'm VERY Pleased.

I haven't listened to it much, but it's stuck in my head a lot. I usually listen to it in the car since I don't have an actual CD copy of it (when at home I prefer listening to CDs on my home stereo rather than digital files)

I played the **** out of it after I first heard it. Then the nuance wore off. When I do play it now, it still strikes me as a really good song. Not a standout HIT, but one I can see nestled amongst other songs on IYD, complementing the rest of the album quite nicely.

Could this song be a "sleeper" hit for Stevie. I'm starting to think maybe?
The song seems to be building very slowly. This weeks debut on Bilboards Top 40 AC chart @29, and the song is getting more airplay - here in Denver 2 radio stations (KBCO & KOSI) added it & David Wild just tweeted "heard "Secret Love" on the radio, and it sounds FANTASTIC over car speakers -- the ultimate test of a great tune."
Back to the question at hand. I, like many of you, am abstaining from secret love... because I do not want my love to secretly die.
But seriously, when I do listen, I'm still impressed. It's a good song. And Stevie's buttery vocal still has me reeling in ecstasy. But just like many of you here, I feel the same way - that this song will probably land somewhere in the middle once I hear the other IYD tracks. And we'll all be screaming WHY o' Why did she release THAT song as the 1st single. Did she have a brain tumor fro breakfast that morning?

The fact that every couple days I have to break my rule and "must" hear Secret Love says a lot.
I had to make a rule like that when SYW came out. I played Thrown Down, Miranda and EFO so much that I was in danger of overdosing on them, so I had a rule that I could only listen to them if I listened to the whole album. I didn't want to lose sight of what had made them special upon first listen.

interesting Louie. i have a BFF in Austin and she heard it. called me to say Stevie had a new song out, asked if i knew that. then immediately realized how ridiculous was her question and said, " it's a good song. doesn't sound like 'listen to me, i'm desperate to be heard' "

It's hard to tell, but secretly I been wondering the same thing. The song is sneaky. It's small, yet, complex at the same time. Think about it. It doesn't really sound like much of anything else. She's not repeating the chorus a thousand times like usual. It's dreamy, drippy and dramatic. Sometimes I listen it and I'm like it's ok. Other times I listen to it and love it. It's a good release. His production just keeps you guessing, makes it interesting and I bet it does sound good on the radio.

What does the whole album sound like? I know it's completed, the music is done, yet I can't even try to imagine how it plays.. I just want to hear it.. Two months is not really a long time, but does seem like an eternity.. at least I have the MSG concert to look forward to..
up to 189 :-)
just a starved for new music Stevie Nicks fan..
I heard it while waiting in line at Subway today. I think they had the "Lite" radio station on.

Wow! "Secret Love" actually is the most listened song on my ipod at a whopping "18" plays.. lol. I have had my ipod for a year and a half and have over 5500 songs on there, so there is a huge variety.. I rarely listen to the same stuff over and over (at least not in succession). But that is a LOT of plays for me considering I've only had the song for a month and a half... the song is ingrained in my mind from those plays and I sing it to myself a lot. I think it's the first favorite new Stevie track I have fallen in love with for a long time.. probably since the title track of TISL (which also gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it).. well I guess I loved "Not Make Believe" also from first listen, but that one didn't give me goosebumps. With "Secret Love", it was the vocal that gave me goosebumps on the first listen.. incredible!

I think I'm up to a whole 20 listens and I've come to the same conclusion - I just don't love this song. It's o.k. to me but I'm just not that crazy about the music or lyrics. The production and mixing is fabulous though! It is however better than Every Day but that's not saying much. I'm not bummed out though because I know there are other songs on the album I love.

Well before I answer your question a couple points: first of all, I screamed out loud when Secret Love started playing because I was excited to hear something I knew and I wanted Stevie to know how excited we are for the new single. Secondly, they had the most amazing sound system so to hear it like that "in stereo" made it slightly more desirable.
To answer your question honestly, I really have to listen to a song more than once to make a judgment on it. I definitely like 2 (Annabelle and LFTM/Twilight) of the songs better but cannot make an accurate assessment until I hear them again. It wasn't really a fair measure because I've heard Secret Love before if that makes sense.

How did Secret Love mesh into the song after it? Did the abrupt ending fit in any way with the intro of the next song?

It's a much better single than Planets or Every Day. Every Day was the AC single and to me it just dragged and was lack luster. No real hook. Sorcerer was too "out there" to be a main stream hit though a great song.
Her voice is much richer on Secret Love than anything she has done recently in my humble opinion.

There were no real singles off TISL except maybe Everyday. The only people who champion Planets and Sorcerer are her fans. The record company did a good job selling that album. They got VH1 to do that promotion. Hence, Stevie sold over 100,000 the opening week. That's why the album went gold. It was not there fault that people did not take to her singles. I do think that Secret Love is a much better single. However, now I think Stevie has to deal with agism prejudice.
Hopefully, the record company can do something ingenious to get that album sold. And I hope that this album gets good word of mouth and has some staying power.

Three promo singles: Both Everyday and Planets were released at the same time to radio in late March, 2001 with both singles being reviewed at the same time by Billboard in April, 2001. Everyday was geared towards AC and Planets to Triple A, Mainstream Rock and Classic rock stations....
Planets was later remixed, released as a maxi single in June, debuted at #5 on the Top 50 Maxi Single Sales chart in July, debuted at #38 on the Top 50 Dance Charts in mid July, 2001, began it's life at #36 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales Chart in July, hit #1 on the dance charts in August & went on to be nominated for a Grammy for Rock Vocal Performance. Incidentally at the same time she was #1 on the Dance Charts with Planets, Bootylicious for which she received a writing credit was #1 on the Hot 100.
Sorcerer was released to radio in probably August/Sept, 2001, was reviewed by Billboard in late July, 2001 - made it's first appearance on the AC charts #27 in late October, 2001 and peaked at #21 on the AC charts in late Nov, 2001.

Well, thats most certainly a matter of opinion. The singles were "real", just not good in your estimation. I'd argue that Warners made the mistake of hedging their bets and releasing 2 singles at the same time. They should have just released POTU and focused on that only. It did receive Triple A play here in Denver as did Sorcerer, but I never heard Everyday ever on the radio.
But I agree that Secret Love is ultimately a better single than any of her released ones from TISL because it single handedly covers both the AC & Triple A format and has a wider appeal because of Stevie's superior nuanced vocal and its simple pop song cred. I think SL has a real shot of going into both of these radio formats Top 10. And one can only hope that they are going to commission out some Dance remixes for the clubs, since Stevie did so well on the Dance Charts with Planets, Dreams & Stand Back.

I would argue that they made a good decision. They knew that none of the singles were strong enough on their own to garner much radio play, so they released two to get more air time.

Do you have a quote to prove that this was their actual thinking, Jondalar? If not, then as Christopher said its purely speculation and your own opinion. Perhaps they thought two strong singles to different formats would goose album sales, or perhaps there was some agreement that the Shanks-penned "Every Day" would be a single because he was producing the album?
I'm not a fan of "Every Day" personally, but I consider "Planets of the Universe" to actually be better than "Secret Love".

and that's his opinion and I loved the lyrics to Planets of the Universe, but it was dry and wouldn't fly on the radio. I think it hit #9 alternative rock and that was it. I absolutely don't care about the dance version because it sounds like a million others. I actually liked the longer version of Planets better but think that that the piano version is the best version. I remember when they released both singles simultaneously one reviewer in a mag stating that was smart and it was. I heard both songs on the radio. The song that sticks with me from that album is the title track, but a single it is not.
Her record company bent over backwards for that album. She sold over 100,000 copies the first week because of the VH1 promotion. It's not their fault if the album didn't have wings.
I don't know where you came up with that Shank's thing. I'm sure that he, just like Sheryl Crow realized she didn't have a single on the album, so he tried to write one. Even Sheryl told Stevie we got to find some way to get you played on the radio. I remember Stevie saying that back in 2001. It made her mad at first but then she realized Sheryl was right. Everyday was a good try, but in the end too small. Why on Earth would Shanks want Everyday to be a single in order to produce her album? She was hot at the time. She came off the dance.

I don't really listen to it all that much right now, but it's burrowed into my head.
I, too am waiting for IYD to drop and planning to listen to that entire record front to back.
As far as staying power goes, "Planets" and "It's Only Love" have some staying power for me, but not like "Fall From Grace" does. Meanwhile, I still adore "Destiny Rules" and "Everybody Finds Out" from Say You Will, but won't go out of my way to listen to anything else off that CD.

Seems to be getting more & more air time:
STEVIE NICKS "SECRET LOVE"
The first single from In Your Dreams continues to gain traction at radio, with Adult Rock Radio (Triple A) really starting to pick up on the song and give it some serious radio play, hense the 14 place jump to # 33 this week after debuting on the chart at # 47 last week. I'll have more later.

They are playing it to death on XM 25 "The Blend". Seems to "blend" very well with the old stuff and new stuff they play. They even give it a "from her forthcoming CD...." type thing every time. Of course this might not be because it is high demand. I have noticed Xm has kinda gone to the toilet since the merger with Sirius and they play the SAME songs over and over and over on ALL the stations. It used to be you could go a week without hearing the same song, and now I hear Secret love EVERYDAY on my morning commute sometime between 7:30 and 8AM and then again on the way home.

I know movement is glacial on the AC charts so 2 places up is not bad.I noticed that Billboard in the IYD info section is describing"Italian Summer"as a romantic power ballad ..I had not heard the "power ballad" description before. Can anyone who was in San Diego last month confirm if it would fall into that category?..I know greatdarkwing thought very highly of the song but he doesn't come on here much.

I'm surprised SL hasn't climbed higher. I have heard it 4x since last friday and I don't listen to the radio that often. And its always being played at peak times like 8 am or noon on Denvers triple A station KBCO.

yeah..if that much. but Stevie gets plenty of my money. I've pre-ordered on amazon (and warner bros. site-just to be safe..) and i spent a ****load on tickets for the Detroit show with Rod...and not to mention the thousands ive blown over the past 25 years!!
But i wanted to hear it in the bar so $3 was worth it. :)

$3 is a lot! I don't know if I would have coughed up that much. A quarter is more in my league. But you exposed other people to the song that way, so you did your job as a fan.

well...thats another reason why i played it. :D
edit...i put $5 in just to play some music...and thought id do a search just to see if it was there and it popped up, it cost me extra credits to play it but it was worth it!
I heard it for the first time on SonicTap's AC channel today. Always cool to hear something new from Stevie on the radio. Still, I think this is only the "warm up" single, or what I like to call the throw away song for what's to come. It's a good enough song, but I think the real fireworks are going to happen closer to May 3rd.
I'm hearing a lot of other Stevie songs too. "Landslide" and "Leather and Lace" to name a few.
