Stevie tells Lindsey she will never make another album without Dave Stewart. So if there will be another Fleetwood Mac album, it will be with Dave Stewart... as producer? as co-writer of songs? band member?

Stevie tells Lindsey she will never make another album without Dave Stewart. So if there will be another Fleetwood Mac album, it will be with Dave Stewart... as producer? as co-writer of songs? band member?

And, Dave did say LB doing the song with Stevie on her album was an "experiement"...

I've wondered the same thing though. Stevie has been insisting in every interview she's told Lindsey she won't do another album without Dave, so it appears that would mean a Fleetwood Mac album.

I have to say that I don't quite totally understand her stance regarding her music not being changed. If none of her songs were ever changed think about that. "Rhiannon" and almost everything else would be these long drawn out piano ballads... So, she really didn't like Lindsey adding rock guitar to "Rhiannon"? Stevie-speak. During the interviews for The Dance she was singing his praises about how "beautiful" he made her songs...

Tsk, tsk...

But, I think adding another producer would cut down on the time that they have to spend doing it.

But on the 2003 album, he & his crew screwed up big time.

That sums up her feelings on the matter. As Lindsey said in the interview posted this week in ref to expectations of the Mac sound: "I’ve done pretty well at undermining that over the years."

Let's not undervalue the impact of Glenn Ballard on this album.

Stewart may have some great ideas (per Stevie) and they may get a long well, but Ballard is the guy with the succesful track record in the studio, I've gotta believe he's doing way more behind the scenes than Stewart.

Truthfully, I just can't see this happening beginning to end. Lindsey likes being in the kitchen too much. He likes crafting and carefully controlling the sound of the band. They may start out making the album with Dave Stewart, but I can 100% guarantee you they won't finish the album with Dave in charge ;).

Right. I mean, I think the concept is they need a moderator and facilitator up in there. The evidence suggests Dave might fit that.

You are correct, he did.

I think Dave would really streamline the process of making a Fleetwood Mac record. He would do what is best for the project and not let his or anyone elses ego get in the way.

This. I've read so much of the same kind of nastiness from her directed at something he did, whether to her songs, during a tour, or just any time at all in the late 1970s that it's just more of the same.

Maybe she'll get what she wants. I don't really care as long as I get more Lindsey music. :)

Well we know they've both mentioned working with an outside producer. I wouldn't be surprised if Dave Stewart has been chosen as The Man. I will have to hear Stevie's album to fully judge what I think about Dave producing FM.

Of course, that might not be dispositive. Dave has produced for a variety of people and even if I didn't like IYD that doesn't mean a colloboration between Dave and Lindsey wouldn't be different and promising, so . . .

Yes, I can believe Stevie said that to Lindsey and that she was serious and that he didn't object (because he wants another group album and will compromise to get it). But obviously David's input will be different working with Lindsey and the band than it was working with Stevie alone.

Right. Because then Dave's got three other guys to get approval from. And, I can just see Stevie, being the "peacekeeper" that she is (ha!) throwing up her hands and saying "fine nevermind, Dave is fired" and then we'll get to hear about how much SHE wanted Dave, but Lindsey couldn't leave his ego at the door and how wicked, evil, mean and nasty he is and in order for the world to have one more Fleetwood Mac album which the world needed so desperately badly, she had to be the one to sacrifice and let Lindsey win...

haha, that's funny, there being a "next Mac album".

Over/under of newly recorded commercially released songs as "Fleetwood Mac" from this point onward? I set it at 2.5.

I honestly think she's saying this (and more than once) to emphasize just how much she's loved working with Dave and how proud she is of their work together. I would definitely not take her literally and imply that FM would not make another record unless Dave worked on it. That's just silly. She may want that but knows this would have to be discussed with the other band members who would not necessarily agree. She's talking out of her a**.

For so many decades now, she's been a puzzle. She appears most of the time to have no outwardly emotional or artistic reason to remain a member of Fleetwood Mac, & yet she never just flat-out leaves the band, either.

What the hell does she actually want with or from them? Is the little insecure girl inside still looking for acceptance from them?

There is neurosis at work here (in her words & actions), but I can't quite characterize it satisfactorily.

But I will say that, if she were a genuinely good songwriter, she'd get classic, powerful songs out of this schizoidness. The fact that she doesn't, year after year, is just one more reason for me to doubt her self-professed artistry. That, too, is beginning to seem like a neurosis working itself out.

She'd make a fascinating subject of a book--written by a real writer. You're all always saying how you're looking forward to Stevie's own book, but that would be as lifeless & noncommittal & even inert as most of her music-making is these days. We'll never get a great book from her; but maybe one day we'll get a great book about her. The mistake her fans make is ascribing their attraction to her to the belief that she's the Da Vinci--she is not, but she is the Mona Lisa.

^I just said all of the exact same things on the Stevie board, David... and I was jumped all over! Like I said on the Stevie board, nearly debilitating insecurity is most certainly the root cause of all of Stevie's... Stevieness :p. She really wasn't taken seriously at all within the band for her first 10-15 years. And I honestly think she's been making them repay that the past 10-15 years. She gets an obscene cut of the touring money. She badmouths Lindsey and the band in the press every chance she can get. She almost seems like somebody who's trying too hard at a high school reunion when it comes to Fleetwood Mac.

Regardless, I'm really not sure adding Dave Stewart into the mix would be the answer. I think it needs to be somebody with a clean slate. Nobody who is automatically on either Stevie's or Lindsey's sides. Nobody who has a history with the band or their members. Because Lindsey will feel pushed into a corner by Stevie's henchman if not, and will rebel. Then we may have no album at all... or even worse: a bad one.

See, i don't think the fact that Stevie likes working w/ Dave automatically means he would be on any member's side when it comes to FM, and that he has no ego (even if Stevie keeps repeating that, which I find somewhat disrespectful to Dave, although she seems to mean it as a positive thing, i guess to underline some other people she created music with were egomaniacs:p). Dave is respected artist in his own right, and has, is and can work with a number of other artists; calling him Stevie's henchman is grossly belittling him, imo.

I think there is alot to be said about Mick, John & Christine. Has anyone heard them bitch about each other the way Lindsey & Stevie do - No, they just want to make great music.

Every interview Stevie does their is some dig at Lindsey but at the same time any interview with Lindsey he keeps going on about the Mac being a "big machine" blah blah snore....This really irritates me because when has Lindsey ever had to change his style to accomodate a Mac album - Never !!

His songs on Tusk/Mirage/Tango/Say You Will are hardly what you would call mainstream. Ironically the most mainstream Lindsey has ever done is Out of the Cradle - His bloody SOLO album.

I think if IYD turns out to be a success, you might see the end of FM if Lindsey (or Mick) are not so hot to have Dave produce. And personally, unless they can bring Christine back in to do a few songs and backing vocals, I think Stevie and Lindsey should stick to their solo projects. After all, GOS and TISL were both better than SYW.

So many interesting points have been raised. First, a point of clarification: I do not believe Dave Stewart would just be a mindless drone who is loyal only to Stevie Nicks. But the reality is, Fleetwood Mac is all about fragile, battling egos. Lindsey would no doubt feel threatened by Dave being there. Lindsey has always felt the world is against him in regards to his post Rumours experimentations. He talked about how he felt the entire band undermined him even during SYW. I think Lindsey would just feel ganged up on by Stevie bringing in Dave Stewart into the mix. I'm not saying it's logical at all :).

That's true. She hasn't said anything since the Unleashed tour ended, indicating that that must have been an ok experience for her.

Also, I wouldn't expect Dave to be on Stevie's side Louie. Rather than cater to her, Dave seems to have drawn Stevie out. If anything, he knows how to butter her up, so that doing something that she would reflexively resist is easier for her. I could see him colloborating with both equally, but in different ways. If he appears to have no ego, he might not bother Lindsey. Lindsey can work with people fine, as long as they aren't telling him what to do. If they offer suggestions and not orders, he can bend -- although not exactly like a willow. Dave could be the spoonful of sugar that makes Lindsey's medicine go down, for Stevie and vice versa.

Didn't I hear that Lindsey said if there is another FM album, they would bring in an outside producer? Maybe not neccesarily Dave S., but an outside producer nonetheless. Of course this producer would have to get along with the 4 Mac members.

I could see having this much fuss if these guys were actually creative anymore... I would so much love to see them stop bitching and whining and make a solid album of 50 min of new music. Sit down, write some tunes together, rehearse, record.. dare I say in a reasonable amount of time... Tour the new album, change the setlist nightly.. and say.. "thank you for still having interest in us."

Agreed. The reason why Fleetwood Mac's music has degraded over the decades is because they don't just throw the BS out the window and sit down and get to work in a reasonable fashion. The '75 Mac album is just sublime, and it was completed in what, 2 months flat? I think they just need to check their egos and neuroses at the door, sit down, and focus on making d@mn good music. Stop tweaking the life and soul out of it for 18 months straight. I think the band still has it in them to make fantastic music. They just need to adjust the way they work. Walk in the door with a clean slate, and leave having collaborated with each other. It's really quite simple...

We should pay to have Dave Stewart involved for his twitter action alone. We'd get weekly tidbits about the album's progress, not to mention an occasional photo or two. We'd have an inside window into Fleetwood Mac that the band would never give us.

Well, they might give us some kind of DR thing after the fact, but they wouldn't give us zip as far as contemporaneous updates go.

And sense our own guys might not be inclined to repeat Destiny Rules, having Dave would ensure us a dvd too.

So, we might get a crummy album, but the back stage glimpses might almost make up for that, in my warped book.

This. But didn't one of Lindsey's nieces, Coby or Courtney...I can't emember her name but it was Co-something...have a very well-written, witty tour diary going during the SYW tour? They tried it back then! Though these days I am fully aware the terse consistency of Twitter owns, there is something really refreshing and personal about a few paragraphs with silly things about band members throughout.

Yeah but what female recording artist is not the Mona Lisa.;)
Musically speaking - what can you extract from say Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benatar, or even Madonna as well as many other famous females & attribute that directly to them and not their session/band players or producers!

Stevie's has the distinction of being a big part of the the famous FM sound, as well as being a strong solo attraction on the basis of her unique vocal styling, lyrics, unusual songwriting structures AND her persona. All those ingredients are enviable enough to stand on there own merit! Stevie has made arguably 4 good to great solo records, and it's not fair to dismiss her solo output. Lindsey B. had a couple of solo stickers himself. Give Miss Nicks credit where credit is due:cool:

By inferring that Stevie is the art, but not the Artist is just plain insulting. She IS both! Just the 15 years of great prolific songwriting (70ish to-85') is more than enough great songwriting to deserve recognition and respect for a lifetime.

Musically speaking - what can you extract from say Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benatar, or even Madonna as well as many other famous females & attributed that directly to them and not their session/band players or producers!I don't know those women well enough, but certainly it would be pointless to speak of the instrumentation or orchestration of their tracks & attribute it to them, the way it also would be with Stevie.

Stevie's has the distinction of being a big part of the the famous FM soundThe sound I was referring to -- I probably wasn't being clear enough -- is something Stevie had no part of.

as well as being a strong solo attraction on the basis of her unique vocal styling, lyrics, unusual songwriting structures AND her persona. All those ingredients are enviable enough to stand on there own merit! Stevie has made arguably 4 good to great solo records, and it's not fair to dismiss her solo output. But these are questions of taste. The "greatness" of Stevie's solo albums is going to vary from this person to that person. I don't consider any of her solo albums great. I like listening to a bunch of them, & sing along & play the songs on the piano & watch her give concerts on TV & all that other stuff, but I don't extrapolate greatness from my sort of mindless enjoyment. I don't find great truths in her lyrics, the way others do. Truth to tell, I find greater truth in her singing than in her lyrics. I think it's her voice & her physical cuteness that are the basis of my excited response to her.

Lindsey B. had a couple of solo stickers himself.Again, these are questions of taste or preference. I like his very first album, but the rest of it I don't really care for. It doesn't seem to have held lasting interest for me.

Give Miss Nicks credit where credit is due:cool:I give her credit (if that's the right word) for being a nice person in a business overrun with egotism & arrogance, for being a great performer, & for being an excellent pop singer. I hope I never said otherwise on the Ledge. If I did, I might have been trolling.

Assuming all this is more or less true, something keeps pulling her back into that sphere. She used to talk about how guilty she would feel if she walked away from her solo career -- she worried about all the other people who worked for her who would, I guess, be unemployed. Maybe that's part of it with Fleetwood Mac, too.

Your typos concern me though. Drinking and Ledging?

There's a name for this? Love it!

Cory. She's Stevie's ambiance creator/teleprompter person.

Speaking of the band doing updates... why doesn't John? He's supposed to be the computer geek of the bunch...

I hadn't considered that. Brilliant.

Which typos? Oh, I've spotted "through" and "sense" which should have been "threw" and "since."

I never drink. Well, I am slightly psychotic about iced tea and obsessed with the lemon that accompanies it, but I would never drink alcohol.

I love FM, but I COMPLETELY agree with what jbrownsjr wrote. Well said and true.

Didn't I hear that Lindsey said if there is another FM album, they would bring in an outside producer? Maybe not neccesarily Dave S., but an outside producer nonetheless. Of course this producer would have to get along with the 4 Mac members.

"I don't think I want to produce again 'cause it takes so much," he explains. "Whatever happens we'll all sit in a room and make something work as a group. a little more like we used to, sort of try to open it up and get everyone sharing the activity a little more." - Lindsey, 2008

Wow. I LIKE that. The most rational idea anyone has had in eons...or ever!

It's too simple CADreaming!!! I bet if they did it that way.. some magic would re-appear.. even if their voices aren't in the best shape anymore.. They are still loved..

Well there you go. I always felt that an outside producer is the best way to go. However all Mac members need to also be active in the making/recording of the album. John can't be off sailing away and Stevie twirling away on her solo tour!!

Yeah, well - Lindsey could once again lay his new album on the sacrificial altar. For all we know, Stevie threw all her vault songs at him when she had Lori go to Phoenix last year - or better yet she told him to just pull her stuff up on Youtube, she's going on tour with Rod - then Dave - and when she gets back off the road she'll come lay her vocals down.

I kinda feel sorry for Lindsey sometimes. Got songs ready for a solo album then it rolls up into a Mac album. Of course I prefer a Mac album to a Lindsey solo album, but still its not really fair.

One thing I have noticed is that both Stevie and Lindsey have done things since SYW in 2003, but they haven't done anything together, i.e. a new Mac album. I suppose its easier to do solo albums than group albums.

Well, they did record that one track for Stevie's new album.

I think that's a bit contrived. They knew they were doing SYW in 1997 and they knew Christine would be gone. So they had plenty of time to prepare. Maybe there were questions about the timing but I heard Stevie say in a video interview in 1997 they would do another album in 5 years. I think there's more of a plan than they like to let on. Drama sells. Remember, in DR Lindsey told John that Howard had come back with the numbers and they would have a good 3 or 4 year run. If someone wasn't doing any planning - they wouldn't be make as good of a living as they do. I think they write and throw everything into a bucket and decide what would be best for a Mac project and what would be best for a solo project. I doubt they care much either way where the songs end up as long as they end up somewhere.

It seems to be that Mac/solo albums are delayed quite often. Wasn't Trouble in Shangri-La supposed to be out in 99/2000?

1997 - The Dance
1998 - Stevie Enchanted Box Set
2001 - Trouble in Shangri-La
2002 - VBO FM
2003 - Say You Will

I don't know about TISL. But, with all the producer changes Stevie was having, it's understandable. Lindsey did have to stop GOS to do The Dance and then they had all the issues at WB - I'm just saying that they were already planning to do a Mac album in 5 years after The Dance. Maybe they just really don't think that hard about it...

Love your sig by the way!

I was under the impression that they didn't really know whether they would carry on as a foursome until they did Bill Clinton's farewell concert in 2001 (or 2002?) and felt at ease with it. Clinton did some stupid stuff during his presidency, but you've gotta love him for the way he helped to shape Fleetwood Mac destiny.

Yeah I tried to come up with something clever and smart...and well that's what I decided!

I just hope that Stevie and Lindsey's soon to be albums go over well and they are convinced to come together for another Mac album at the end of the year/2012.

I'll have to see if I can find the interview. It was backstage at an awards show or something during The Dance or right after and Stevie said they planned to do an album in 5 years but that Christine was retiring and that was that.

I was watching Destiny Rules the other day and I think Stevie's biggest problem with SYW was the fact that she was so disconnected from it. Lindsey's songs were mostly done by the time she got there and all she had to do was stick some vocals on them. Aside from her 4 new songs she showed up with, they had been "working on her songs for the past six months." If the Mac does another album, they need to do it together, not with one of them off touring. Stevie doesn't have to show up on the days when they are only working on a Lindsey song, but six months? That is ridiculous. As for producers, I see them "trying" several producers. Dave will for sure be one of the ones they try out, but there is no guarantee they will keep him. I see Lindsey being a "co-producer" and Dave being a "co-producer" on some of Stevie's songs, or maybe the whole album. But will they give the producing reigns completely to Dave? No way in hell. Or perhaps it will happen like the whole ordeal with Chris Lord Alge for SYW?

I think this was a massive problem with TITN, too. Those days she didn't show up until 2pm.

What the hell does she actually want with or from them?

The money ain't bad.

Is the little insecure girl inside still looking for acceptance from them?

No way. It's like Mick says, they're all gigsters. They love getting out on stage and playing to a crowd. It's all they've ever done or wanted to do. They still draw a rather sizeable concert crowd and people still want to buy their albums, so why stop now?

Not trying to hijack the thread here but...

To me TITN worked out quite well with the limited involvement of Stevie. Christine and Lindsey seemed to worked together well w/Christine contributing some of her best songs. Plus the album has an overall "sound/theme" to it. I suppose Lindsey decided upon that.

SYW w/o Christine and limited involvement from Stevie makes SYW more a Lindsey album featuring Stevie Nicks.

What's that old saying? A rolling stone gathers no moss? Looks like Dave Stewart isn't sitting idle waiting on a modest proposal from Fleetwood Mac. I was listening to the radio and heard Dave is now working with another Mick, Mr. Jagger, on Jagger's new solo album.

I am a huge fan of SYW and love all the songs except for just one or two of Stevie's.

What I'm not as keen on these days are the White and Rumours albums - the reason being that I much prefer all those songs as live versions on CDs and DVDs. Now, when I play the White album and Rumours (which I still do of course) they just sound much too tame.

Anyhow, roll on another album - it now seems like a long long time ago that Lindsey hinted so strongly of one during the Unleashed tour!
