I’m still shaking so forgive me if I seem like I’m rambling but I’m going to tell you guys as much as I can about what happened. Please keep in mind I don’t have the best memory so I can’t share every detail but here it goes. I just saw that someone else was in attendance as well so hopefully they can give you guys a more detailed account but here's my summary:
So first of all thanks to Viv for posting about the meet and greet in San Diego. Of course the second I read the post I had to find out how to go and sure enough I pulled some strings and managed to get a pass. I left at around noon and drove down from L.A. to the resort where it was being held. I got there fairly early for the 3 p.m. start time and reserved myself a front row seat. It was a very intimate venue, maybe 60 seats with a lot of people standing in the back so maybe 100 people total. After I got my seat they asked us to wait outside so they could set up. Moments later Stevie walked past us with her entourage in tow (including her manager Sheryl Lewis, Sharon, and Lori) in a long black fur coat and of course those sun glasses she seems to always be wearing now a days which she didn’t take off the entire time. There were 2 comfy seats set up on the stage for Stevie and this lady (I think she was from a radio station). I really wish I could give you a blow by blow account but like I said I’m a little overwhelmed right now and can’t remember everything. Well the lady asked her a few questions about the new album and she talked about the recording process and a few songs in particular and then Stevie stood up and introduced the “sizzle reel” for the documentary. It was like a 2 minute clip from the film with some highlights and scenes from the recording session at her house in L.A. which apparently she owns but doesn’t live in (she stays in her condo by the beach). She talked a lot about her collaboration with Dave and even joked that she’d never make another album (solo or with FM) unless he was involved. We actually watched the sizzle reel twice because she insisted (it was so cute). We also saw clips from the Secret Love video! She talked a lot about Walter Reed and her work with the soldiers. It was very inspiring. Then they played the first 8 tracks of In Your Dreams (Lady from the Mountain/Vampire Song, For What it’s Worth, In Your Dreams, The Ghosts are Gone, Secret Love, Soldier’s Angel (with Lindsey singing and playing), Annabelle Lee, and Italian Summer). The last track on the album is the Twilight song which was inspired by Edward and Bella, not about them. She introduced a few songs but not all. By the way I heard parts of the Twilight song in the sizzle reel and it was the stand-out song for me. I actually liked Annabelle Lee and Lady from the Mountains was amazing. Also heard Cheaper than Free in the reel which I’m not a huge fan of. Following the album preview there was a Q and A and of course I had to ask a question (which turned out to be 3). I asked her how she felt about her demos being circulated and she basically said of course she knows about it (btw the vault is in Phoenix) and that she’s not upset that we have them. She’s also for sure touring with In Your Dreams right after the Rod Stewart dates. Aaah there is so much more to tell but I’m exhausted and this could go on forever so I will be back tomorrow and fill in some more details. I did however bring her a gift and handed it to her while she was answering one of my questions! How excited am I!!! Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture because only certain people were aloud to at the end but overall the fact that I was sitting merely feet away from Stevie for 2 hours today is more than I could have ever dreamed. I literally had a conversation with her! I should have taken notes so I could share more but I could not take my eyes off her. I’m going to go dream about Stevie now. Nighty night from cloud 9.
*Edit: I'm remembering a lot more details so read through the thread to see them!
*Big edit: Apparantly I'm wrong about Lady From the Mountains. It was actually LFTM morphed into the Twilight song. My sincerest appoligies. I'm going to go hide under my covers now for about 2 days.
*Final edit: I only hid for a couple of hours. I love Stevie and you guys so much and so glad I could share my experience with you all and you are going to love the new album!

Yes, it sounds better than I could have ever imagined! It was so funny too, I was totally singing along the words to it and I swear Stevie saw me and was probably wondering how I knew them which was part of the reason I decided to talk to her about the demos circulating. I prefaced the question with "Please don't be mad at me Stevie" lol.

I will keep adding things as they come to me...she seems so genuinely happy you guys! And honestly, she is so sweet. When she first sat down I sensed there was a little angst but I was completely wrong. I think my favorite part aside from talking to her was watching her dancing and mouthing the words along to her own songs as she was standing in the corner. The woman was rocking out and playing air guitar and doing her little swaying motions, so effin cute.
*Louie - she looks NOTHING like a grandma close up :wavey:!!

Oh, that's so funny. I'm sure you know the words to songs Stevie has forgotten she even wrote.
So glad that after what you've heard you're looking forward to the album even more. It should alleviate a lot of the fears people have had (especially about the Twilight song).
Thanks so much for the report.

Oh and interesting about her saying that she'll never do another album without Dave. We had been wondering if Dave had plans with FM or with BN, for that matter, and this comment, though brief, seems to lend credence to the idea that he does.

Ok here it goes, from what I can remember I was not too crazy about For What It's Worth because it was a little bit too country-ish. In Your Dreams was really good and Italian Summer I would have to hear again to give an accurate assessment. I want to reiterate how fabulous the Twilight song is without having heard the whole thing. Reminded me of my treasured Rooms on Fire!!

And I guess we've proven that FM77 did not hear the album, since they denied Lady from the Mountain was on it.

It's really hard to say at this point and also because i was staring at Stevie rocking out to the songs while they were playing so most of my attention was on her. Oh another thing - when Secret Love started playing I yelled out woo hoo and everyone heard me and looked in my direction. Whoops!

Oh no she was still internet hating! During our conversation I said "You don't own a computer do you?" And she responded that she did not own a computer or a cell phone! lol She also said she's known for years about the demos and that back in the day they would be laying around her house at parties and stuff and people would just take them but she didn't think much of it at the time.

*Just remembered some other stuff she talked about. After the tracks played she mentioned how she still gets very emotional when she performs certain tracks and in the background I said "Like Beauty and the Beast?" And she responded "Yes, like Beauty and the Beast and HAEWAFY". I also told her that Storms is my favorite song and she said she was so happy they did that on the Unleashed tour.

No, 14 recorded, and she has to have a bonus track. No one ever said as far as I remember that there would actually be 14 songs on the album, just that 14 songs were recorded. We all been speculating about the bonus track.

She also spoke of her songwriting process and that it's done in pros form, not in poetry and than she takes the songs from her journals. She writes anytime she is inspired. She also realized through Dave that she doesn't have to be the sorrowful depressed girl playing the piano harping on her pain. She can write under happy circumstances as well and that Dave showed her this was possible. She obviously has tons of love for him and it totally came through in the sizzle reel! There is a clip of them embracing and you can clearly see the chemistry.

Guitar! Not synthed up at all. It had just the perfect amount of production without being over-produced. I know you guys love it and I like it a lot but it's never been one of my favorite demos and I can tell you that I love the song on the album.
P.S. They had signs everywhere saying "NO RECORDINGS" and warned us that there would be security guards walking around to make sure no one was recording or on their cell phone.

OMG, how awesome is this? So happy that you got in and survived to tell your tale! Although I would like to smack you for not remembering the details... but, OMG...
Okay, you don't remember it, but does the rest of the album sound as slick and commercial as "Secret Love" or are there longer "epic" songs like on her earlier albums? What does the "Secret Love" video look like? Is it a performance video or are there dramatic elements to it as well? Gah!
SapphireSister
02-20-2011, 12:33 AM
Also, her hair looked totally real to me. I paid particual attention since there's been so much talk of her wearing a wig although I could be mistaken. Also, the tight black pants she was wearing had this detail at the bottom where they were like scrunched up but purposely. It's hard to explain but they had little pleats at the bottom on the outside. Very stylish.

Yes there were other songs that seemed epic but not in the vein of earlier albums. I have to say again I heard a lot of similarities to TISL just from the overall sound of the album. Nothing really reminiscent of BD or WH though...
The secret love is a documentary styled shoot.
Also, in the sizzle reel introduction she commented of seeing unicorns in the back yard but in fact they were horses and there is a great shot of them in there! It was so cute when she said she saw unicorns lol. The shots of the horses really stood out to me. There were also young girls looking in a mirror, all these different beautiful young girls.

Someone mentioned Gold and Braid when she was talking about the songs that make her emotional when she listens to them. She was like "Uh no that song was only done live" and basically corrected them.
See I'm remembering all this stuff from you guys talking about it. At one point she was talking about the Italy song and said let's talk in Italian or something and I yelled out Bella Donna and she said yes, beautiful woman and some other kind of woman but I can't remember the adjective she used. Began with an s.

Thank you for all the information, Sapphire Sister. I remember you quite well from months back, when you were worried she was losing her Stevie-ness over a photograph that none of us liked, taken at a steak house, and a little pep-talk from me of so few words (ha) convinced you that anyone could have a bad photo day and she'd still be the Stevie you love next time you saw her.
-I thought, however, it would be on stage, not at a private listening and chit-chat, up close!
Congratulations on your great day. I am so glad you went, it seems very fitting you were in attendance, you seem to love SN's music, her image, and her, generally, so very much.
Tell me, please- did you get any lovely parting gifts? Like a cd single or a photo postcard or any dang thing at all? I'm sure you don't care.
You were just feet away from SN in a tiny room and you talked to her and she answered! - how many of her fans can make that claim?! AND you were one of the very first on The Ledge to hear most of the cd and get back to us same day about it! Thanks, Sapphire Sister!
I'm happy for you, SS.
Sounds like you had a day truly worthy of being called one that was 'in your dreams'.
I bet you'll remember it always.

Here's a question- SS-- did Stevie's vocals sound better to you than on TISL, which you compared the new cd to? I felt many of her vocals on TISL weren't recorded quite as well as I'd have liked- something about a sterile production technique or in the mix on some of the SC-produced tracks not really showcasing SN's voice to the full advantage, in my opinion. I loved the Shanks produced tracks on TISL-
So tell me, did SN's voice really come through in a great way in what you heard? I think Dave Stewart will get it right, or did get it right- is just my gut instinct.
Thanks, SS.

I wish I could tell you more about the songs but it's hard for me to describe them after only hearing them once and being very distracted by her standing in front of me. Sorry!
Exactly! I remember them being super good, and the tempo they were, but it's hard memorizing more when she's right there in front of you! Wasn't that awesome today?? :wavey:

I think SapphireSister wouldn't make that up, no matter how excited she was. I believe her, she takes her Stevie fandom very seriously. Now, I need to go read the other attendee's second installment. My instinct tells me that SS heard it- but I've been wrong before! Perhaps SS was more familiar with that particular demo than the other writer, so it really jumped out at her?
I don't think she'd deliberately say it was something that got played if it had not been, it's not her style to lie, I don't think. She seems sensitive and serious about SN and she doesn't strike me as someone who'd play games about what she heard.
Well, that's my guess.

Well if it is Moonlight, then it isn't really about Twilight. The tune wasn't inspired by them. Maybe she changed some lyrics to make the song get noticed, but this is bah.

To be honest, Im not a big demo person but when I heard the first few lines of the songs (granted, it was the first song played), I immediately recognized it as Lady From the Mountain. It was shocking to me, because she was introducing it as the Twilight song, so when it first came on I was a little shocked. So, I really cant answer that as I couldnt remember.
I will say this....Italian Summer is one of the best stevie songs I have ever heard. She hits the last note on the word "fall" at the very end and holds it and it is spectacular. It gave me chills.

I'm still thinking the Twilight song was played in the "sizzle reel" and she then talked about it and then Lady From The Mountain played, but it perhaps seemed like she was introducing LFTM as the Twilight song. But I don't know! Thanks to everyone that has helped try to clear this up! Italian Summer sounds like it is going to be great!

My guess no one is lying. LFTM lyrics have most likely been morphed into a new song, or the song retitled. "Vampire's Dream" is far more marketable today than "LFTM," and maybe the song is being planned for the next movie.
Just like "Secret Love" was updated a bit, I suspect the same to be true in this case. When Stevie says she was inspired by the movie, she may very well be saying she was inspired to go find a song she already wrote and complete it for this CD. Since I often read on this board that she is loose with the facts, or simply gives some random answers at times, how can we assume she saw the movie and then went home and wrote a song directly linked to it?
Soon, the track listing will surface and we'll all know what is on the CD. In the meantime, I'm happy to get some "inside" reports from fans that spend a lot of moola to get in, and then took the time to pass along the information as they recalled it. For that, I thank them!

I dunno but the production of "Secret Love" sounds similar to the John Shanks songs on TISL IMO except less muddy.I thought the Shanks produced songs were the best overall on TISL .I'm sure the people that have heard the other songs would know more of course.

I had a dream last night that I bought the album and "LFTM" was not on it. When I woke up I was thankful that it was just a dream and that it was indeed going to be on the album, per Sapphire Sister's confirmation.
Now I log back onto the forum today to find out that possibly it's NOT on the album due to confusion/conflicting reports/etc.
What's worse is the report that some of the lyrics may have been transfered into the "Moonlight" song, and that makes me real sad and a bit angry.

Don't worry about it. The idea that you would try to mislead anyone is ridiculous. You reported what you remember and perceived and that's all you can do and it's very gracious of you to try, considering some of the responses you received.
Many of us attend the same concerts and see, hear, and remember different things from the show all of the time. One person misses something that another can describe in detail. And that's not even a bad thing. From the different recollections, we can often put the pieces together and get a fuller picture than what we could get from only one individual's perspective. I'm so happy that you took the time to share everything you recalled with us.

I love Stevie and you guys so much and so glad I could share my experience with you all and you are going to love the new album!
very cool! good for you! :)

:] Omg what an honor ! I can't imagine having this experience. I am afraid i would freeze when it came time to ask her ANYTHING ! I completely understand SS not remembering the music that much, i would probably have been glued to Stevie the entire time also ! I am honestly so thrilled that Stevie seems to really love this album. That's a good sign. Dave seems to have shown her that there are two ways to" skin a cat". I think Stevie sometimes gets stuck on " her " way of doing things. It's nice to see her opening up a little, and giving things a chance ( like the internet ) !
