From Architectural Digest (Sheryl Crow's Hollywood home):
"A writing table by LDC Home gives Crow a place to put thoughts down in her
journal, a gift from Stevie Nicks".

I've been wondering if their friendship had cooled since Sheryl skipped out on joining the Mac. You don't ever hear them talk about each other in the media anymore. This seems to be proof to me that they're still buddies! :)

I wish someone would give me a 2600 dollar desk.

I think the journal was the gift, not the desk!

Still... not sure if those two besties anymore. That journal could have been sitting there on that desk since 2001 for all we know. We haven't heard about Sheryl Crow guesting on Stevie's new album, so I think that says it all right there.

What was the story with Sheryl and the Mac?

I thought Sheryl said something to the press about a project with (if not outright joining) Fleetwood Mac...and then Lindsey and co. responded by saying they didn't even know Sheryl and had no idea where she was coming from.

Is there more to the story?

Basically, the story with Sheryl, Stevie, and the Mac is this. Stevie felt outnumbered and alone as a woman in Fleetwood Mac following Christine's departure. Stevie talked about wanting to bring on another woman as a counterpoint. There was some discussion with Sheryl, who was a good friend of Stevie's and who had previously produced some of Stevie's album tracks from her album Trouble In Shangri La. Then Sheryl jumped the gun and started saying in the media that she was indeed joining Fleetwood Mac... before it had really been officially decided. This appeared to greatly anger Lindsey. Sheryl then ended up backing out of touring with the Mac following this very public discourse... which then set Stevie off.

In the end, I think it was a good thing Sheryl didn't join the band. Not that she wouldn't have been a neat addition. But I think the problem with Fleetwood Mac was the lack of dialogue between Stevie and Lindsey. I think they avoided really getting into it and letting their true feelings and desires be known during the Say You Will project. I think this lack of communication/honesty is why the album was so disjointed. I sense that Stevie and Lindsey have probably screamed and yelled at each other since, and that all parties agreed that SYW was a failure... and a different approach is needed next time around. I think they probably all realize now too that adding Sheryl would have just been slapping a band aid on an injury that actually required major surgery to heal.

My vote is that the table was the gift from Stevie. A mere journal would seem a bit on the lite side for someone as well to do as Stevie. And the subject of the picture and caption is, afterall, the table. I can see Stevie gifting Sheryl with the table and telling her she needed a special place to write, as I can only imagine that Stevie probably has a very fabulous place where she writes. Just my thought. That the story about Sheryl joining Fleetwood Mac was about a year before her breast cancer diagnosis and announcement has always made me wonder how one may have impacted the other, if at all.

Assuming the article is grammatically correct, the journal is the gift from Stevie. If it's in fact the table that she gave Sheryl, then we've got a misplaced modifier on our hands.

I think they probably all realize now too that adding Sheryl would have just been slapping a band aid on an injury that actually required major surgery to heal.

Stevie said this in 2009: “We rented a studio and hired a crew,” Stevie said. “We were ready to go in and called her and needed her to come for two or three days to just play. It was Mother’s Day and she had invited 300 people in her family there. It was her first Mother’s Day as a mom and she could not do it. At that point she said “I am going to have to pass”. I said “I think you are making the right decision. You have a new baby, you have survived breast cancer and Lance Armstrong. I don’t think this is the right thing for you”. That is what happened with Sheryl Crow. She is still our friend and I still adore her. She is one of my dearest friends”.

While Sheryl came close to joining, no other female has been considered. “As far as having another girl in the band, after we went through that we really realised that there wasn’t going to be another woman that could come into this band who could fit,” she said. “I was looking at it three years ago as a buffer between me and Lindsey. Lindsey and I don’t need a buffer. Certainly Sheryl Crow and not any woman in the world is going to be able to get in the middle of Lindsey and me. The fact is if Lindsey and I can’t work out our problems by ourselves we might as well throw in the towel. That's what we are currently trying to do is work out own problems and certainly another person could not do that for us. Think about this – Christine has been gone since 1998 so I have been the only girl in this band for a long, long time. I’m used to it now. At first I was not used to it. After ‘The Dance’ was horrifying for me. She has been gone time and I’m fine with it now”.

By the way, Sheryl was at the Nashville Unleashed show (and I'm sure others), photographed with Stevie. Sheryl was quoted after the fiasco of saying that she was still friends with all of them. So, I don't think there was any hard feelings. But, I do think Stevie was a bit put out with Lindsey for spilling the beans that she and Sheryl actually had words over the situation. I think Stevie got more miffed with Sheryl than she wanted everyone to know, but Lindsey certainly knew about it and then blabbed it and Stevie spent the next several interviews putting her positive spin on it and saying what great friends they were.

After Sheryl Crow jumped the gun with the announcement I saw an interview of Stevie where she said that it was her that convinced Sheryl not to join and tour with the Mac because it was an impossible commitment and you couldn't call in sick to Fleetwood mac. She said she knew that if it came down to doing a show or spending mohter's day with her baby, Stevie knew that Sheryl was the kind of person that wouldn't want to be away from her child. So Stevie's advice to Sheryl was to make 1000% sure that you are up for this.

I'll try to find the interview

I think she gave her the journal, but I like your point. If Stevie said she was giving me a gift and it turned out to be a journal, I'd be a little disappointed, even if it was a nice, leather bound one with gilded pages.

But that's ok, I'm sure she's given Sheryl tons of pricey stuff, not to mention the gifts she's lavished on her sons.

The thing is, Stevie is a writer and poet. She's famous for her journals she's always kept. There's no doubt in my mind it was the journal Stevie gave Sheryl. That would be a very Stevie thing to do. And I wouldn't discount the price of that journal... it's clearly bound in very expensive leather, with very expensive gold leaf edged paper. Perhaps Sheryl was in a down period in regards to creativity... and Stevie presented her with the journal as an encouragement to write or something :)

Since journals mean so much to Stevie, I'd say it is a very thoughtful gift, especially for a young person or a graduate. Sheryl Crow is kind of old and has been a songwriter and artist for a long time now. If she hadn't been keeping a journal before now, I don't think Stevie's gift would change her creative habits. That's probably why the pages seem blank.

If this were The Price is Right, I'd say $40. Looks like the appointment books American Express sends out at the end of every year and tries to trick you into buying, by conveniently billing it to your credit card automatically unless you send it back.

I sorta believed Sheryl on that one. I think Stevie really wanted to Sheryl to join the tour, but then the guys didn't want the tour to be about Sheryl Crow.

A sneaky little question popped into my mind whilst reviewing posts... would it be a bit gauche to give someone a gift and tell them where you got it, even if they asked? Maybe.. maybe not. I guess if it were a good friend and they wanted to know, I'd tell them. Isn't there something about throwing company names around in print when you're a celeb... like product endorsements or something. I know this is probably analyzing things way too much, but that's what some of us Stevie fans like to do, eh? Pick it all apart... it's half the fun. LOL! :sorry: :xoxo:

I guess what I'm trying to say here is... maybe it really is the journal that's being referred to as the gift

A mention was made of Sheryl producing part of TISL for the 2001 release of that cd.
Sheryl as a Nicks producer was much more powerful and did better work on 'Boys On The Side' circa '95 and 'Practical Magic' in '98- it seemed the two worked together splendidly, on those three tracks.
By the time SC got the reigns for what was initially thought to be an entire album she'd produce for Stevie- I think SC lost some of her b*lls and maybe didn't want to say to SN 'try that vocal again'. The SC produced songs on TISL definitely do not compare favorably to the excellent production of Mr. Shanks, in my opinion.
I think the whole 'was she or wasn't she?' joining Fleetwood Mac was milked/hyped a little, for press coverage for the Fleetwood Mac tour, by LB, mainly. LB had previously used conflict as a promotion tool maybe once or twice or five times in interviews, and I think he saw the Sheryl Crow non-issue (as she never joined the band) a way to be irreverent in interviews.
This was a tactic used in '79 when Lindsey tweaked The Eagles while promoting 'Tusk' and other interviews LB gave in the '80's where he'd say something a tad snarky about colleagues or competitors. He's smart, it gets attention.
It's just a part of what LB does, when speaking to the media, and it has worked for him. John McVie never said a word about SC that I recall, and both SN and MF seemed to want the whole thing to go away without hurting SC.
LB went for it, in terms of 'dishing dirt' about SC jumping the gun making an announcement before the band decided if she was in.
LB had a point that it was a band announcement to make, and not Crow's, but he could have been kinder.
Michele mentioned SC adopting a second son- I didn't know that! I bet she's a fine mother.
("She'd miss Mother's Day", my a*s! No offense, but that was one of the flimsier reasons I read for why SC didn't join). Lame as it was, the Mother's Day excuse was kind and considerate of Stevie, in that SN tried to make it sound like it was SC who opted out over the Mother's Day issue, and that it was Sheryl who declined to join Fleetwood Mac. LB went for the "we didn't ever say Sheryl Crow was 'in' anyway", angle.
I think Lindsey told the truth, and that Stevie tried to help Sheryl save face and soothe a professional embarrassment.
It seemed to escape LB's radar that his revelations were hurtful, even if they were true. SC has a ton of industry respect that LB really didn't give professional consideration to, whereas SN and MF did. You just don't say what LB said about Crow, even if it was true- Crow has close to a dozen Grammy's to FM's one, and even if that were not so, it just wasn't nice of Lindsey. If Crow jumped the gun with her announcement, it was out of excitement, not malice.
"In the navy, you can sail the seven seas".
Being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in The Navy? No, that wasn't how that story went!
('They don't want you, don't want you, don't want you as a new recruit'-- 'Who, me?')
Poor Sheryl!

I agree. The sentence makes it sound like they are talking about the journal being the gift. However, the sentence is about the desk so I assumed it would be hella random to randomly say that her journal was a gift from Stevie. "She can write in her journal, a gift from Stevie Nicks..." as if Sheryl Crow only has that one journal she can write in.

I doubt she writes on it--it's some place to toss your keys when you come in. ;)

But what Nikolaj said makes sense to me on some of the discussion on this thread, and another one discussing why Stevie was the breakout person: I think a lot of it comes down to public relations. Sure, Stevie has a unique voice that resonates with her fans, no doubt about it. But she has reached out more to recruit and maintain her fan base. Lindsey has done that in the past 4 years, and I think it worked, but it was "too much too little too late," unfortunately. There is no reason why he couldn't have been as successful as Stevie--he just didn't try. The recording company tried to get him out there--particularly with "Out Of The Cradle." The lot of them (Fleetwood Mac) got drunk on their own success on Rumours, and it made them fat and lazy. Chili D rants about this a lot, and he's correct.

This is just one little example of Stevie's PR savy--Stevie put out a product and did a "book signing." Lindsey put out a similar product and didn't.

Stevie had the Nicks Fix and the "fan mail lady." Lindsey had nothing for years. Stevie would do interviews--even when she was in bad shape. Lindsey was in his basement or garage, probably writing and recording . . . and no doubt erasing or disgarding more stuff because he wasn't satisfied with it.

Stevie's got PR sense. Another example: Lindsey went on the attack in "reining in" Sheryl Crow. No surprise to me that Lindsey would do that. He's the notorioius hot head in the band. (remember the breaking of the guitar, etc) Sheryl Crow has a larger fan base than Lindsey solo. It was not smart for Lindsey to attack Sheryl publicly, despite her faux pas. Why chase people away that buy tickets and music? Stevie tried to "keep him from the fire." There's no point in making an enemy. Sheryl was Stevie's friend and she helped Stevie quite a bit. Crow has a lot of friends. This is a spot where Lindsey should have surrendered the rein, I think. Stevie could have dealt with Sheryl a little more gently. You don't need a sledge hammer. It left a lot of unnecessary explaining--how ridiculous was it for Stevie to have to come out with, "you should stay home with your baby," nonsense, only to have Sheryl come out with TWO more albums and tours, and adopt another child as well?

I like more sturdy desks and big ones so I can spread out. So, I might not really write on that, but it's a lovely decorative piece. I would definitely have it in my house.

At work, I have a C shaped desk and the front part that faces the entrance only has lovely items on it that never get touched. They're there for display. The other two sections of the desk is where all the heavy lifting is done!
