I didn't know what to title this thread, but think what I went with works. I'm basically saying we should all be REALLY greatful to what this woman has done this past year, and more importantly what she could've done instead.

Lets rewind one year, maybe 13 months to be more accurate. Almost everything was pointing towrds a joint summer Eagles Fleetwood Mac tour. the prices wouldve been outragous and the set list would be shorter and probably more safe then unleashed. It would've such a waste of a year. INSTEAD Stevie decides to record an album very quickly, and we even got that very small tour mixed in for a month, and she even shocked us and played Love Is.

So I don't want to hear about the last 7 years, the Stevie Nicks of This "decade" has been nothing short of awseome!!!

I totally agree. That's probably why she felt she could take nearly a decade long creative hiatus

But she said in that interview that no man (or woman) ever came near her bottom! So, I beg to differ.

I have never liked the thought of being grateful to an artist for releasing material they are fully capable of releasing (ie. doing their job!) ... and regularly so.

My gratefulness is extended when I go out and purchase a copy (or 2) of that album. In the meantime I can complain all I want about lack of new material. ;)

Considering Stevie has about an ounce of artistic integrity left, I'm pretty sure she should be kissing our asses for waiting and still caring.

I think we should be grateful in some regards that she is still working at all, and hasn't sailed off to an island somewhere with her dogs never to be seen again.

I'm glad she is making music again. I hope she quits touring and just puts out at least one more album after this. Fleetwood Mac is kinda over without Christine McVie. I want her to do her Rhiannon album and put out BN and I would happy.

I'm not kissing her ass though. I spent a bunch of money on her. And album wise, I only feel I got two good releases, Bella Donna and The Wild Heart. I just hope she ends with a bang and I think that is what she is planning.

I'll kiss her ass by buying her new albums, but she has to deliver first. She should kiss our ass for still being here. Especially since the 95% of the actual promotion of this new album has been done by her fans. If it weren't for the evil interwebs and us fans, barely anybody would know about the new album.

At least Stevie's not Kate Bush - 13 years between albums - or Annie Lennox (three solo albums on original material & 1 Eurythmics album in past 19 years) , Bonnie Raitt (two CDs in the past 13 years)) , Sade Adu, 10 years between her last two releases. or David Bowie, last album released in 2003, and no upcoming plans for another.

This is true too. Technically, I guess Stevie put out new music in 2003 with Say You Will and the live album was nice. I got a great version of Still of the Night and Beauty and the Beast out of that. The woman does have two careers and she tours all the time. I think the touring needs to stop though.

I don't want her to stop touring, unless she wants to stop touring :/ I really hope she tours for IYD because I'm not seeing her on Heart&Soul - too expensive considering that I don't care to hear Rod Stewart in the slightest.

I get the point, had it not been for Stevie, we would have sat thru the Eagles and Mac tour and still had gotten nothing new. She has done some pretty shocking things in the past year and my hopes are high that she will make this decade an amazing one. But at the same time, Stevie could have made new material in 2004, 2005, 2006 instead of aimlessly touring. I think Crystal Visions was out of her hands, so I enjoy what she did with it, but she could have done something new and different in 2008 and she could have not done a greatest hits tour in 2009 with FM. The thing is, she didn't. She spent seven year stagnant and not doing anything, and now we should kiss her ass for stirring the waters finally? No. She should kiss our ass for still being here. If Stevie somehow continues with this momentum and releases all kinds of amazing things during this decade, then I will kiss her ass.

Wait, so we're supposed to forgive Stevie's 10 year recording absence because she sang ONE new song last year, and recorded an album we haven't even heard yet?

Let's look at it this way:

1) in the '90s she only recorded ONE album of new music

2) in the '00s she recorded ONE new solo album and ONE new Mac album

In the meantime she's saturated the market with her tours filled with ever worse renditions of the same tired, tired old songs. But we're supposed to be grateful for her output? I love Stevie as much as her most crazed fanboy... but honestly, she's stretched her credibility to the point where I'm not sure it can be reformed. She's only as good as her next album.

Well okay... in Stevie's defense... at least she did Say You Will, and I think she's done two solo tours as well as two Fleetwood Mac tours? So she has kept busy for a 50-60 year old rocker woman. ;)

Well, lets look at this way. Between 1979 and 1989, she recorded 4 solo album, and 3 Mac albums and toured constantly. That's not including the Rumours either. She got addicted to cocaine in the process. It hurt her. the 90s were a bust, but at least she got her crap together. The 90s were albout grundge anyway. Now, the touring needs to stop. She just concentrate on making her last records. Those records are permanent. If you haven't seen Stevie in concert by now, tough.

Truth be told if Stevie had released an album during those years last decade and not really been creatively motivated we might have ended up with a rather mediorce album or two.For IYD I believe that she is the most creatively motivated that she has been in a very long time and I don't believe that this album is going to be mediorce.I would rather have one great , heartfelt and vital piece of work than 2 or 3 rote ones anyday.

first of all, its an 8 year recording absence, that ever worse renditions stuff is bull**** except for maybe one or two songs and the danm thread was about just me thinking back one year to what we were expecting Stevie's 2010 to be like and what she ended up doing and how its so much more awseome and for once wasn't the more profitable option. The thread title was just a joke you all took way seriously. It's about thinking abou the present. Your dwelling on the past 8 years is kind of annoying Louie.

And i'm still not over out of all the albums only 2 were solid efforts. By solid I mean I get pleasure from listening to it. So excuse me for being a little underwhelmed by ms. Nicks. Truth be told i have low low low expectations for IYD. I'm barely into the the idea of a new album:shrug: After WH it's like a train wreck.

I am grateful that she is finally doing something new but I agree with others here that she has dithered away her career and diminished her fanbase over the past 10-15-20 years. To me an artist is someone who creates - and she has not done much of that over that time period.

I have to disagree there. TISL is easily just as good as Bella Donna or WH, and I'd argue that RAL was a pretty solid album too (albeit one that is far harder to appreciate)

I will concede that, bar maybe 3/4 songs between them, OSOTM and SA are pure garbage though. But, I think for those two albums, she was "going through the motions" rather than being really inspired.

I, for one, am just grateful that she's putting out a new album. If the songs are on-par with, or even better than, Secret Love, I'll be very happy indeed.

Let's just see if she surprises everyone and makes more than one album this decade  If she does, then she might get a kiss on her hand, if not her ass.

I'm kind of bewildered by some of the views in this thread. I mean, really, who's got a gun to anyone's head on any of this? By all means don't buy her music, don't go to her concerts and don't give her own personal artistic journey any thought at all in your busy day.

But that's easier said than done, and that's where the discourse of expectation enters. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that, for me, there are artists I will always be interested in, and be unable to stop myself investing in as if I had a right to expect things from them. But I don't. I just feel like I do, because of something they've created in the past that has touched me very deeply or given me such pleasure that I just want another fix. The truth, though, is that their artistic journey is theirs, and mine in mine.

I know this is all complicated by the fact that SN has often made a big deal out of how much we fans matter to her, and that certainly does fuel the delusion that she might somehow be amenable to doing what we want her to do. But really, being a fan is by definition a dependent relationship. We are all the junior partners in our relationship to the entity we think of as 'Stevie'. And if you find that position undignifying, then I suppose the only thing you can do is not be a fan any more.

You're right. No one's forcing anyone. Just sharing opinions. I happen to only like 2 albums in her canon. Maybe because my expectations are so low, she'll blow me away. I'm a fan...But I have been throughly disappointed by her work. I can't help that. I feel she's let me as a fan down, With sub-par work. Having said that that, Will I continue to buy her albums? Yes:nod:
Because I feel she's got it in her to put out 1 more classic. Am I a bit harsh....maybe. But I feel I'm justified dammit:D

Off my soapbox now.

Sure thing. And this is actually largely how I feel about Joni Mitchell, whose public utterances and creative flatlining in recent years have more or less made me view her as an artist of entirely historical interest. Seriously, she is so far from where she once was (for me) that she might as well be dead.

I don't feel entitled to anything from these people, though. I guess I just hope, rather than expect.

Well, Joni has technically been in "retirement" since 2002 and she pretty much stopped giving a hoot about music after 1998- that was no closely kept secret. Her last two albums full of orchestral standards and covers of her own songs were merely depictions of Joni's musical inspiration circling the drain. She surprised us a few years ago with a new album (even in retirement she has been more prolific than Stevie!), but I think she is really done this time, especially considering how poorly the album was received. She is almost 70 and is not in good health. It makes me sad that she has ended her career on such a sour series of notes. But I've made my peace with Joni- I caught her final concert tours (both rocking and orchestral) and she has such an immense, satisfying body of work that I will cherish forever. However, unlike Joni, I think Stevie still has some work to do. I don't think IYD will be the last chapter in her book; I think we will all know when she is really done.

First off I won't 'kiss' any artists a** period. Even if I like them or not. Those days are so over for me. Yes, I like Stevie's music but my 'rose' colored glasses days are long gone. Yes, I appreciate what she has done for music and that she is still recording but as a long time fan I am disappointed in the out put of music esp for someone that is suppose to be so prolific of a songwriter. Either that or those were just great sounding 'words' back in all those old Fmac interview days. I can still be a fan of her's and not worship the ground she walks on or think everything she's done is wonderful.
I won't spend anymore $$ for concert tickets.(I've spent enough on tickets and memoriblia of her and FMac through the yrs). Really not for any artists unless I can get them cheap. I don't really care to see Stevie live anymore because of the setlist issue's etc. Even for this new tour with Rod (to me its just another GHits tour setlist) nor will I go to the IYD tour either.
Personally, I don't really know how I will 'feel' about the 'new' cd IYD yet. I mean Secret Love is OK but I guess since I've had the demo for so long I guess its just not a big deal to me. Plus the song in itself was OK than not like one of my must-have's that I wanted recorded offically really. Thats IMO anyway, to each his/her own. Its good to have different opinions. I think really Stevie and FMac could've really marketed each of themselves much better and each could've put alot more unreleased material (cds or dvds) etc to there advantage but well they both wasted chances to do such things. As a 'fan' looking from the outside its really a shame but it was Stevie's and Fmac choice to NOT do anything. Yes, there have been GHits packages and various things released but really they also could've used the Net more to there advantage and neither chose to do so. As a fan its our loss and I guess as a business its also there loss too. I guess its just hard for me to get too excited about this stuff. I mean I love music but it'll not ever be how it was back in the 80's or even '90's again. Heck I was too young for the 70's so I can't include that time period. Anyway, hopefully, I didn't anger anyone. We all have a right to our opinions , so we can just agree to disagree. It is what it is.:D
