Just curious - what's everyone’s 9 to 5?

Astronaut? Supermodel? Celebrity chef? Professional Stevie impersonator? Etc., etc.

Me –nothing glamorous. I work as a medical illustrator at a university in Canada. Well, it’s a living. :)

I'm a business and history student in my junior year at a SUNY college. It doesn't pay well (I have to pay them ) and sometimes, especially on Thursdays this semester, I'm basically there from 12:50 to after 9 PM (it's Sci Fi Forum meeting and diner run that night)

I sleep as late as my body will let me(usually noon), then I either:
1) Do sound or lights for a band, that evening.
2) Play in a band, on weekends.
3) Deal with rental properties, being a landlord.

I've really got it made. Not so much money wise, but time wise. I usually have about 3-4 days off a week. There are weeks (few) that I'll work 6-7 days, and there are weeks when I only work 2 days. I like it like that. It allows for my travels.

I'm a pilot of extraterrestrial vehicles. I think you earthlings call them UFOs. I'm not really human, I'm a human/alien hybrid ...by day.

I morph into human form and am a musician when darkness befalls the west coast of the North American sector of your planet.

I reside in Area 63; slangly referred to as "UN-Groomed Lake". (an inside joke amongst us pilots)

Now that you know that, I'll have to erase your memory and make you lose 9 minutes.

I've already taken two separate weeks in Nashvegas, in 2011. Where the beer runs are walks down on Broadway, drinking PBR, with a flask of Jim Beam Red Stag in my coat pocket.

At home, I rarely drink beer. Solo, I drink red wine. With company, usually whiskey and a mixer.

I'm a full time student at the University of Texas and I'm a senior Mathematics major with a focus in Actuarial Science. I also have an occasional job in Midland which is 300 miles away where I'm a front-end manager at a grocery store called Albertsons. I did work full-time there, but when I transfered to UT, they offered to let me stay employed and only work during holidays! Therefore, I am basically fulltime during Christmas break and summer, but then I barely work any Sept-May.

Yes, only an adult unit; 18 and over. I read your earlier post that you work with children and adolescents. I don't think I could handle that. Its hard enough to handle the misfortunes of adults, but children, that would be too much for me to handle.

HA! I worked residential treatment for adolescents for 5 years & I don't think I would have been able to deal with ADULTS!

I'm an RN as well; have been a nurse for about 16 years. Have worked with profound developmentally disabled kids & inpatient mental health population in the past. Now I'm the clinic manager at a university health clinic.

Nice to see all of the medical professionals on the board. My dear ol' Mum was a RN before major back and knee problems forced her to retire early. She was an excellent oncology nurse, and I know it kills her not to be able to do it anymore. Las Vegas doesn't have a nursing union, so she walked away with nothing but medical problems of her own. Now, money for her is pretty tight. I feel terrible for her. Not to mention she's married to a complete dick, but that's an entire other thread. :(

My current 9 to 5 is applying for jobs full time, and volunteering when and where I can. Hence my volunteering to moderate here at the Ledge :).

Most recently, I worked for the Federal Reserve Bank for 4 years researching accounting errors. I would have happily stayed at that job for a long time, but the Federal Reserve is a shrinking entity. My department was eliminated a year ago, and all employees were displaced. Since Charlotte's economy relied on banking, and banking is in the toilet, I moved back to my hometown of Austin to search for work. I have another job interview next Friday... hopefully it goes well! Louie needs a JOB!!

Good luck louie! I was in a similar situation, but luckily not for too long, last summer/autumn and was applying for everything I could. I'm currently a School Administrator at a local high school, running the office and doing financial and exam stuff for about 900 students. It will do nicely while I spend the next year or so looking for academic lecturing jobs.

I'm not sure that qualifies as volunteering!

Banking IS in the fukcing toilet! My hometown bank just got bought out, and I'm currently on hold with them, vehemently protesting the new service charges they put on me. And I WILL walk, after all my automatic deductions come out, this month. I'll keep finding Mom and Pop banks, until there are none left. Fukc the big banks!

Good luck in your search, my friend!:woohoo:

Sure it does! I'm working without pay!

But I volunteer doing other things, too. I volunteer for the Friends Of Barton Springs. Barton Springs is Austin's most revered natural landmark... I help clean the springs by removing algae, sediment, etc. I'm hoping to get my scuba certification this year so I can get even more involved with springs/lake cleanups around here. Back in Charlotte I volunteered at Time Out Youth... a support group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered youth. I also helped my parents renovate their kitchen and bathrooms, stuff like that. I should be volunteering for more stuff here in Austin, it's a great way to network and hopefully get work.

I'd recommend temping, but only if you can stomach verbal/emotional abuse, or can get your hands on a Xanax prescription fairly easily.

I think I've just about gone through all the temp agencies in Austin - they all suck, to varying degrees. I'm currently doing seasonal work for the IRS (for the 2nd year) - I can only tolerate it as well as I can b/c I know it'll be over in 3 months.

A therapist once told me that I was too smart for the jobs that I've had. So, I'm going back to school and will hopefully figure out if there's a job I can do that won't require my being medicated. Ugh.

Any toothbrush can take enamel off if you push too hard.
