Hi everyone -
I really like what Stevie and Dave have done with this song. Having worked as a DJ and in radio (back in the good old days of singles) this song wouldn't however have garnered a lot of airplay in its current form especially with the abrupt cutoff ending.
I thought how I would like to hear this on the radio or if I bought the "45" liked we used to back in the day and made this radio remix. It is posted here as a high quality WAV file.
I know it won't stay this way for long (and that's okay) but for now this is an EXCLUSIVE post for Ledge members and has not been posted elsewhere. My way of saying thanks for all the audio goodies posted here. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Hi Randy
You did a great job. The edits and segue ways sound very professional. My favorite part is where you doubled up the 2nd chorus. I think the song needs this extra hook.
Though I highly suspect the "Secret Love" we all have via the pre-order or YouTube that is unusually short (3:16) - esp. for a Stevie Nicks song - is a promo pre-order edit (sort of an extended teaser) & not the "single" edit and/or album version. It could be one of the reasons WBR hasn't pulled the song off YouTube etc. I'm hopeful that Feb. 3rd a longer version will be unveiled on Itunes with easily 30 seconds or more mixed in.
BTW-Welcome to The Ledge:angel:

Nice effort... but I guess I should just be perfectly honest. I hated it. You have edited out all of the quirks that I find endearing... like those awkward, slightly off-rhythm drum beats at the beginning and the little instrumental breakdown after the second "...down here in tears." And I thought it was the perfect length in its original form; it definitely didn't need "you need some rest" repeated over and over at the end like that. The abrupt ending is kind of neat (although I suspect it will not end that way on the CD). The more I listen to the original track, the more I appreciate it- musically and technically. I can only imagine that Lindsey must have been blown away when he heard it. Surely this has been presented to him for inclusion on FM albums, and he probably didn't know what to do with it.

I want to say thank you first and foremost for doing this and posting it here.
I just downloaded it and will listen to it in the morning when my head is clear.
(just drove 8 1/2 hours in a blizzard), so am quite exhausted, but wanted to post my thank you in advance. :D

It's nice to hear in another form. It makes me wonder more about what they will release.

We agree for once!!!  I think the song in stock form is perfectly paced, progresses smoothly & linearly, and is thoroughly radio friendly as-is. This remix/edit destroys the flow and aura of the song, in my opinion.

I agree that the original is better, I too like the cold ending. “My secret love secretly ….. Dies ….” then to have that very abrupt ending leaves an impact, I get it, but “hate” and “destroy” to describe Randy's edit is a bit much.

I appreciate the comments - both the positive and negative. It is always interesting to hear why someone likes something and why others don't. I have both loved and hated many of the remixes out there and everyone absolutely has different tastes. I personally didn't care for some elements of the original mix of Secret Love which is why I made the remix. I now get to hear it the way I want to while others prefer the original as it is. I'll be curious to hear what kind of mix they release next week!

I really like this radio remix, just a little different, I will listen to both versions, nice to mix it up and have a couple of cool versions to listen to! Good Job!

What was that? Was that the sound of a table turning?

I think that table turned a long time ago.The last truly superb prodction job of a Stevie Nicks song by LB was Gypsy..of course no one has touched the work that they did on the 3 great Fleetwood Mac studio albums of the second half of the 1970sJudging from Secret Love I think Dave and Glen may "get" her better than any of her producers since the early 1980s ..only John Shanks would be close IMO.So I have VERY high hopes for this album.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I actually liked what Sheryl Crow did with "Candlebright" and "Sorcerer". I absolutely love both those songs (hence my screen name ;) )

My favorite Sheryl produced song is "If you Ever did Believe" I also like the two you mentioned .I just think the John Shanks songs on TISL were the most well produced for her style and Sheryl admitted she did not know what to do with "Fall From Grace"

Totally! There's no question that Shanks was the better producer, but I was just trying to show a little love for Sheryl as well. ;)
I absolutely ADORE "If You Ever Did Believe" also!
But back to the topic, I think this is a really cool remix of "Secret Love"! Kudos!!!

The consensus on TheLedge back when TISL was released was that John Shanks productions were by far the favorites on the record. And I still agree all these years later. While I liked the Sheryl Crow produced tracks. They didn't blow me away. I can only imagine how much better Candlebright and Sorcerer would have been if John Shanks had a stab at them before Sheryl did. "Its Only Love" is my favorite Sheryl Crow contribution on TISL overall. The production was beautifully understated, and Stevie's voice really shined on that track.
I predict that Dave Stewart & don't forget Glen Ballard, will be regarded as Stevie's best producer(s) since Jimmy Iovine once In You Dreams is unveiled. To my ears the production on Secret Love unites the best of her 80's sound with the guitar oriented sound of her last recordings.

Which were the TISL songs John Shanks produced?
There's always been a lot of Sheryl Crow hate on this board, and I'm not sure why. I was a SC fan before I was a SN fan. Tho I don't really follow Sheryl anymore. I loved Sorcerer & Candlebright, too. Two of the best songs on the album, and they were definitely improvements over the demos (were they demos or outtakes?).

John Shanks arranged/produced as well as played guitar/keyboards on Trouble In Shangri-la, Planets Of The Universe, Fall From Grace & Everyday.

I will give SC her due on "Candlebright." I think the whole psychedelic Indian/Middle Eastern vibe with the mandolin(?) was a brilliant touch without being in-your-face about it, e.g., using a sitar. Other than that, I think her production style is just not particularly interesting. And the thing I notice most about SC-produced songs is that, for whatever reason, she doesn't seem to be able to get a (relatively) good vocal out of Stevie. In all of the SC-produced songs, including the Practical Magic tunes, Stevie sounds a bit hoarse and her tone is just not... quite right; perhaps it's the way her vocals are recorded or engineered? Or perhaps SC is so in awe of Stevie that she is afraid to tell Stevie to do another, better take? Whenever I hear these songs, I can't help but think that I've heard Stevie sound so much better live or on other recordings.

Agree agree agree. IMO Sheryl messed up TISL. The production does not bring out Stevie's vocals and the arrangements and instrumentation are trying too hard in a bad direction, it all sounds too .... harsh?

I feel like Sheryl's contributions were left a little too....stripped-down, I think. In some instances, it comes off perfectly (It's Only Love, If You Ever Did Believe)...for others, namely Sorcerer, it kind of falls flat. Ten years have gone by, and I feel like Sorcerer is still missing some sort of oopmh to it.
I prefer the Shanks tracks because, I think, they have more life to them...but they are *almost* crossing over the line into "overproduced" territory.
Which brings me to one major problem that I have with TISL...I love all of the songs individually, but, like Say You Will, it feels like two different albums: the Sheryl Songs vs. the Shanks Songs.

Thanks!
