View Full Version : Buckingham Nicks on Pandora? Since when? and HOW?

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Buckingham Nicks is being thrown into my "Stevie Nicks" rotation of random songs. Usually only PUBLISHED albums or music that existed as an actual pressed CD shows up there. The intention being when you hear something you like, you click on it and it brings you to a place to PURCHASE it.
So is this is sign that BN is indeed CLOSE to being on CD?
The big question is WHERE did they get a CD quality version of this album?

Um, from "Stevie's Vault"?? ;)
Seriously, that's curious and hopefully does mean something....

True, I hear BN cuts on satellite radio but they usually say it's never been released on cd.

Well it's technically commercially released, even though only on vinyl & long out of print. Does Pandora only use current CD releases? I have no idea.

That tree from Avatar was the first best thing Stevie Nicks did, according to Mick Fleetwood. Also according to Mick Fleetwood, that tree was called Tusk.

I don't listen to Pandora, but I do listen to Last.fm and the other day I almost had a heart attack because whilst cleaning my living room and listening to the Stevie Nicks station, a new song came on that I had never heard. Before the words started, I looked up to see our beloved Stevie and Lindsey on the screen and a song by BuckinghamNicks! However, this was a song I had NEVER heard called "Fantasmas". Stunned and surprised, I almost died. And then the person started singing and it CLEARLY was not Linds nor Stevie, but rather some tejano song. So I looked up BuckinghamNicks on Last.fm's website and they play a total of 6 "BuckinghamNicks" songs, but they are all the tejano songs. WTF? All the other plays that actually are BN songs were played from users own personal libraries.

However, Pandora plays all the songs from the original BN, plus the 45 version of Crying In The Night and from the previews they all seem to be STELLAR quality. What gives???

Does anyone have an mp3 of that really cool 45 version of Crying In The Night?

I think after In Your Dreams, BN is getting released. Stevie said it was time and Dave has also brought that to her attention. It's going to be sooner than later.

Mistakes and misinformation are commonplace on the internet, especially among sites that feature user contribution. I don't find it surprising.
The terrific quality BN songs are probably the ones Tom Montcrieff re-mastered. They have been available for download for years. ;)

I actually have them, but the question is why does pandora have them? As far as I know, Last.fm and Pandora are not based on "user contribution". But perhaps they are?

This album needs to be reissued.
Has anyone seen that video on the Tube when Tori Amos is talking about how her brother introduced to Buckingham Nicks?

Was positive there was a thread called "Random Nicks" but this is close enough. Long Distance Winner played on Portland Radio station KINK fm today. WHAT?!?!?! Swore I kept hearing dj say Stevie Nicks this Stevie Nicks that, and thought I have flippin' Stevie Nicks on the brain all the time, then lo and behold, LDW started up. wonder what he was saying prior. Sorry, I was very excited. They rotated the hell out of Secret Love when it was first leaked, sadly they have dropped it now, but they play a lot of FM early and Rumours line up, and Chris. LDW really fits in w the likes of the Decemberists, Mumford & Sons etc. I hope they keep that in rotation. Sorry, random Stevie moment. :o

Buckingham Nicks was one of my first searches on Pandora , just to throw them a curveball. I do have trouble getting Pandora playing early Fleetwood Mac in some sort of rotation.

Hearing Buckingham Nicks on Pandora or ANYWHERE shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Before CD's radio stations actually played vinyl records. They would often put them on carts (tapes that sort of look like an 8-track tape). So I'm guessing that someone at Pandora just took the album and put it into MP3 format like all of us have already done. There are many great quality digital versions of the album out there.
What is surprising is hearing the MuZac version of "Frozen Love", which I've heard in a store and almost passed out when I realized what song it was!
It's already available on cd because I have a copy which includes extra tracks, including a rather different live version of Rhiannon.

ANY copy on CD is a bootleg, the album has never officially been released on CD. Part of the issue is that Stevie and Lindsey own and currently HAVE the master tapes.

Hi, it's not a bootleg. I just found the official CD version on Ebay (released by Polydor), with a live version of "Rhiannon" also included.
I guess it's the same copy Jay has: http://www.ebay.it/itm/Buckingham-Nicks-CD-NEW-Fleetwood-Mac-/251113286628?pt=Music_CDs&hash=item3a7784abe4

Nope, sorry. It's never been officially released. :distress:
Stevie and Lindsey have been saying in the press for several years (and more often in the last year) that they will finally release it. But, apparently, there are legal hold ups involving Keith Olsen or maybe even between them and label(s) as to when the right time is and probably trying to decide on some type of promotion and whether or not that would include a tour of some kind.

No, I've heard them on XM/Sirius a lot and I used to hear them on Pandora. Recently, I've noticed I don't hear those tracks at all and just wondered if anyone else had noticed they've dropped off?

Shoot! They really need to release this as a 2 disc set on CD- the album, plus a live show and unreleased demos. I would die. And then go right out and buy it.

Thanks, CAD :)
I also read on the link that Omshiva posted, that:
"Sources close to the pair state that Stevie very much wants it to be released but that Lindsey is the reluctant party.
The source for these tracks as they appear here is the original DLedin 16 bit vinyl rip of the album."
But if it's only a bootleg, is the use of the Polydor label allowed? I don't know very much about bootlegs, so I don't know how the whole thing works...sorry! :sorry:
I thought that a record company wouldn't allow the publication of unauthorized/illegal stuff....

People who make bootlegs tend to do whatever they can to make them look legit. What you have was very well made, but still a bootleg. There are bootleg labels out there that make professional looking and sounding boots. A few key things to look for if you're unsure if it's a bootleg or not, look for a bar code, look for a copyright date (the Buckingham Nicks album if and when it's finally released will most likely say something like "original recordings (c) 1973, (c) 2012 packaging") Also if it were a legit reissue there is almost ALWAYS a write up inside about the album by someone connected to the artist.

The current issue resides with Keith Olsen who, along with Lindsey and Stevie owns the masters. I'm pretty sure Polydor, it's successors and or assigns have relinquished any rights to the material.

Yes, Polydor long ago let the album go. In fact I don't think Polydor even exists as a label anymore (I believe anything that was on Polydor now falls into the Universal label). If a major label, or really ANY label held the masters they would have released this years ago just to make $$$. That is generally the case when albums fall out of print, it's because the masters are owned by the artist or producer and they don't see a need to reissue the album. This is the case also with Cher's 1970's Warner Bros. material, she owns the masters to those four albums (which are actually among her best albums) and because she doesn't think much of them won't reissue them.

Polydor is very much alive, in the UK. You can read the history here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydor_Records).
