So we all know that these were the three songs left off of TISL. My question(s):
Do you think any one of these songs or all three should have been kept on the record?
If so, what song or songs (that made it on to the record) would you take off to replace?
Or...would you just add all three to make it a 16 track record? Or not add any and leave TISL as it is?
Or I guess I could've just said, "Build your own Trouble In Shangri-La! Go!"

Any two of them could replace That Made Me Stronger & Too Far from Texas, and I'd be more than pleased.

btw, was there an actual finished version of Thrown Down for TISL? The "wall of sound" version I have features LB prominently, so I assume that version was recorded during the SYW sessions.

TISL is what it is... There's no need to change it. I think Thrown Down was the strongest of the lot of those 3... I don't know if including it on the record would've made it that much stronger. Thrown Down ended up sounding the way it should... the FMac version edges out the TISL version. I don't think I'd change TISL.

That version is the studio version for TISL. I think Mick is on it too, but it was on a 16 track version of TISL that Stevie played. As for having these songs on the album, I say add Touched By An Angel. I like My Heart, but something about it just doesn't feel like it should be on an album. And I am glad Thrown Down was held off until SYW. I prefer the SYW version much more. However, I do wish Have No Heart would have made it on TISL, and I would have replaced "It's Only Love".

Here is what I wish that album ended up like, granted it still would not of been great, but it would of been a lot better, and almost totally rock. These songs are not in order of the way would be sequenced.
TISL
Candlebright
Sorceror
Planets of the Universe (piano version)
Everyday
If you Ever Did Believe
Say You Will
Fall from Grace
Illume
Thrown Down (the TISL version, the SYW lyrics were too wacky)
Smile at You
Destiny Rules (a little better vocal please)
My Heart (a better vocal please)
I Miss You
Twisted (the demo version)

I've been looking for my copies of these 3 songs and I can't find them. Well, I found My Heart but it refuses to play. I know I had them somewhere but my computer went crazy a couple of months ago and I lost loads. I thought I'd managed to replace everything but I keep finding stuff isn't where it once was!
Can someone help? Are these up on mediafire?

Trouble In Shangri-La Track Listing:
1-Trouble In Shangri-La
2-Candlebright
3-Sorcerer
4-Planets Of The Universe (ExtendedVersion)
5-Everyday
6-I Miss You
7-My Heart
8-If You Ever Did Believe
9-Love Changes
10-Touched By An Angel
11-Bombay Sapphires
12-Fall From Grace
13-Love Is
...For TISL, I threw out Too Far From Texas (I don't like her voice with Natalie Maines), Its Only Love (although her vocal is beautiful), That Made Me Stronger (Although the song is a major peice of her life during this period)... and I added My Heart, If You Ever Did Believe (Lindsey has realeased multiple versions of the same song, so why not Stevie) and Touched By An Angel... Mixing up the 'sequencing' a little to shake it up some...
...Thrown Down is great, but I think it has its place on SYW... As odd as the production of SYW was...and some of her vocals were left oddly raw in such heavy productions, I feel it gave Stevie a nice touch of edge...

Like I've said umpteen times before, the album would be perfect except for those two clunkers in the middle (TFFT & TMMS).

5. Every Day
6. Thrown Down

I agree--It's Only Love is one of my favorites--easily the strongest vocal performance on TISL, IMO.
But people here seem to prefer material Stevie wrote herself. That's probably especially true of her ballads--we appreciate them more when they come from a more personal place.

The TISL "Thrown Down" is soooo much better than the one on Say You Will. Bad decision, Stevie. Mick & LB even sound more enlivened on the TISL "Thrown Down", not that slow, rote ditty they concocted later while Stevie was on tour. The TISL version just rocks!!!!
And, yes, that new verse on the SYW version is a little wacky, even for Stevie.
I would add all three songs, plus "If You Ever Did Believe", for a 17-track CD. If forced to cut, YES, the Crow-written "It's Only Love" is out the door. Gwyneth Paltrow can have it.

Here's "My TISL" (for now...will probably expand shortly):
Trouble In Shangri-La
That Made Me Stronger (don't get the hate for this one, one of my faves on the album)
Love Changes
Touched By An Angel
Planets Of The Universe
Sorcerer
Thrown Down
Every Day
Candlebright

Bombay Sapphires

It doesn't sound as flashy as the John Shanks songs, but it also doesn't sound as stripped-down as the Sheryl Crow tracks.

The 16-track Trouble In Shangri-la, which "Thrown Down" and "My Heart" come from ("Touched By An Angel" is on there, too), does not have production credits on it. I guess it's like the advance copy of In Your Dreams that FM77 has heard, with extra tracks and all.
I've only known two people that have that CD, one in Germany and the other in Dallas. The German woman who made copies of "Thrown Down", "My Heart" and the alternate "Bombay Sapphires" for me never told me that also on the CD are different mixes of "Every Day" and "I Miss You". Otherwise, I would have hounded her for them! ;)
Anyone have those two alternate mixes?
***Many people got copies of the CD at Stevie's Arizona Benefit in September 2000.

I would never consider it appropriate that a demo, such as Twisted, be included on a studio album. When has she ever done that before? The studio version was released years prior to Trouble in Shangrila. The demo was appropriately featured on the box set.
Is the "wall of sound" version of " Thrown Down" from Trouble in Shangrila? I always thought it was an alternate mix from Say You Will. If so, can someone please post the Trouble in Shangrila version? Perhaps it's posted in the Demos/Request thread.

I think TISL is perfect as it is. None of these songs would fit well on the album, and the album wouldn't sound right with any song taken off. Thrown Down definitely belongs on SYW, but it could have been cool to have My Heart as a hidden track at the end of TISL

The version of "Thrown Down" that is referred to as "Wall Of Sound" version is from Trouble In Shangri-la. (I'm not sure why someone decided to label it "Wall Of Sound"; Phil Spector didn't produce it).
Although it has Mick and Lindsey on it (just like Lindsey is on "I Miss You"), it is not from Say You Will at all, but Trouble In Shangri-la. The proof: In September 2000, Stevie had her Benefit in Arizona. At the party there, several invited guests received a copy of Stevie's completed but not released album, a 16-track version of Trouble In Shangri-la. On this CD were all of the songs on the version that would be released May 1, 2001, PLUS three extra songs:
"Touched By An Angel"
"Thrown Down" (this "Wall of Sound" version)
"My Heart"
Also, "Every Day" and "I Miss You" had different mixes and "Bombay Sapphires" was a completely different recording.
So, this was September 2000. "Touched By An Angel" would end up on the Sweet November soundtrack in February 2001, and Stevie would re-record "Bombay Sapphires" (again!). Eventually, some of the people who had the rare 16-track CD of Trouble In Shangri-la shared "Thrown Down" and "My Heart" with their friends, and the songs spread around the world.
Stevie said she had to cut Trouble In Shangri-la down by a few songs, and there were some songs she knew would work with the upcoming fleetwood Mac record, so she pulled "Thrown Down" from Trouble In Shangri-la and re-recorded it with Fleetwood Mac for Say You Will.
But the version labelled "Wall Of Sound" of "Thrown Down" is an outtake of Trouble In Shangri-la, not an "early" version/outtake from Say You Will.

Yes! This is the track order from the original 16-track Trouble In Shangri-la ~
1. Trouble In Shangri-la
2. Candlebright
3. That Made Me Stronger
4. Sorcerer
5. Planets Of The Universe
6. It's Only Love
7. Every Day
8. Bombay Sapphires

10. Too Far From Texas
11. I Miss You
12. Fall From Grace

13. Love Is
I love this track list. The only song I think I would replace is maybe "My Heart" with "If You Ever Did Believe", because I think IYEDB is one of her great overlooked songs that just needs more exposure, besides the production fits perfectly with TISL's. I would then sequence "Thrown Down" instead of TMMS. And I also agree with you "It's Only Love" is pure bliss. The production is beautifully subtle & nuanced and Stevie's voice hasn't sounded like this in decades!! So I don't even care if she did not write it. These 2 changes would make TISL the perfect album to me.
"Touched By An Angel" made a good B-side/soundtrack song. I like the music & sentiment, but the lyrics are an example for me where Stevie needed to edit herself and tighten up the prose.
"My Heart" sounds great at 1st and 2nd listen, but the chorus needs some tweaking - I'm not sure what it needs, maybe a key change, but it should be a little more catchy and lift off, instead of just lie there.

I'd probably get rid of That Made Me Stronger and replace it with My Heart, but keep the rest of the album as it is.
That Made Me Stronger could have been a B-Side to Everyday or Planets; speaking of which I wish Stevie would record and release some B-Sides on the upcoming album.
I've been listening to my own TISL/SYW mix lately. It's not that interesting or different overall, but I like that I ended it with Everybody Finds Out. I would like Stevie to try somethign different and finish an album off with an energetic rocker that leaves you wanting to let the whole album start over and play again, rather than a ballad. The ballads are nice, but I've never thought a slow song is the best way to end an album.
Here's my playlist from the era:
Trouble In Shangri-La
Thrown Down (TISL final mixes non-LP track)
Candlebright
Sorcerer
Planets of the Universe (unedited)
Running Through The Garden
Fall From Grace
Bombay Sapphires
Love Is
I Miss You
Not Make Believe
Destiny Rules
My Heart
Everybody Finds Out

I'm in the "Include As Much As Possible!" camp. Stevie has said "That Made Me Stronger" was an important song for her. Also, she performed "Too Far From Texas" on tour. In this day and technical age, a 17-track CD is not overdone, especially as a 10th Anniversary Special Edition - Trouble In Shangri-la :
1. Trouble In Shangri-la
2. Candlebright
3. That Made Me Stronger
4. Sorcerer
5. Planets Of The Universe (extended album version)

There are a few version of a very rough Thrown Down demo in circulation...which is what you have just posted, although I don't think I've heard this one before. The version I have sounds identical, only it's lacking the guitar work that this one has.
The Thrown Down demo that I have features just Stevie pounding out some chords on piano along to a drum machine.

There are two demos for "Thrown Down". One is very simple, Stevie plunking on the keyboards, with the bass and drums. The second is longer, with more instruments, including a simple guitar, more vocals. These two are simple demos, although one is more filled in. Neither demo is the version referred to as "Wall of Sound".
The "Wall of Sound"-labeled version of "Thrown Down" is the fully-produced outtake from Trouble In Shangri-la that was on the original 16-track CD of TISL in September, 2000. Mick plays drums, Lindsey sings and plays guitar, and it is from Trouble In Shangri-la.

The two demos circulating of "Thrown Down" were never referred to as the "wall of sound" version. Though by the confusion that still exists, you never know.:o
So all together now there are 4 versions of Thrown Down:
1. SYW version - FM
2. TISL version - SN feat. Lindsey on vocals & guitar and Mick on drums. Fully produced outtake that appeared on the original TISL acetate aka the "wall of sound" version.
3. Demo#1 - guitar, bass, keyboard and drum machine.
4. Demo#2 - stripped down with just Stevie playing keyboard and drum machine.

That is hilarious, after all the back and forth clarifications! Really funny, somehow, just scrolling down to each new message about the song, getting each message straight in my mind, and then your above response- it's part of what makes The Ledge a playground.
Tears, almost- that was funny, SapphireSister!
MikeBise, that's what you get for all your hard work explaining :) Hope it made you laugh, too.

OMG I'm so sorry...thank you so much too for posting the clip and helping me understand this very difficult process. You played a crucial role since I was finally able to hear the darn wall of sound version and know I didn't have it. :xoxo:
