I don't even know what Stevie was saying, but in the second video she is telling Sheryl a story and it makes me just want to go hang out with her for a day. Or the rest of my life. Whatev.
I also love Stevie's nervous energy and her constant swaying.
And the corners of her mouth are always ****ing sexy, and this video is no exception! :]

I still have my giant Practical Magic poster hanging on my wall (it's the only thing big enough to cover my breaker box! :p). I just loved that movie, and Stevie's songs on the soundtrack. I have always wished she'd record an entire album in that vein.

On a related note, I just found out a couple of weeks ago that Sandra Bullock's house here in Austin is actually diagonally across the street from me. I keep joking I'm going to go stand by her gate with a sharpie and my poster! :p

Anyway, it's interesting to see this footage. Stevie looks so much younger here! So does Sheryl, for that matter! And how boring making a music video must be for an artist. I also can't help but think how HOT Stevie would have looked for this vid with different clothes and hair. What a beautiful lady held back by frumpiness... :sorry:

i agree. and i have a crystal clear copy of IYEDB that i prob got from someone here...which i added to a "complete" CV dvd i made. i burned the CV dvd and added it to the playlist (along with the other missing "videos") EO17 (concept), L&L, and some other live performances of "single's songs" that i have good copies of like Nightbird, LAHGTP, ATGF(i made my own video for this):D

oh wait...before i upload this anywhere and try to share it...badanimals87, i know you are pretty picky about your quality...so what would you reccommed be the best way i upload and share this so i dont lose any quality in the process?

fyi...the CV playlist is on a modified game console that i hooked up directly to my tv, that acts as a external harddrive where i keep movies and such that i play right to my tv, because as soon as you burn anything to an actual dvd you lose ALOT of quality.

This is super cool! I swear it sounds like Stevie is telling Sheryl about "drinking 24 cups of Tequila...and everybody was so sick we didn't see each other for three days after that." lol!!

In the second part, Stevie looks pissed off about having to stand behind that wooden barrier, looking very awkward with Sheryl. They both seemed put out by that portion.

This is great quality, and Stevie looks absolutely beautiful! I don't know where people get their hands on these things...but I say, keep them coming!

She's so beautiful during this era and looking so sexy good I think. And Louie I love her clothes for this. An easy look my closet could pull off, simple black jacket and chiffon hanky skirt and boots. I must be frumpy to you also sometimes, heh.

So, so, soooo true! Compare it to the Everyday video where she wears white and has her hair up, she looks ridiculously pretty there. The long blonde hair and layers of black do nothing for her.

This is super cool! I swear it sounds like Stevie is telling Sheryl about "drinking 24 cups of Tequila...and everybody was so sick we didn't see each other for three days after that." lol!!

24 cups of Tequila?! Even if she just had a fraction of that, Stevie's made of stronger stuff than I am, ONE SHOT of that stuff had me spewing for hours!

One thing I've learned about Stevie's fans, is no matter what she does it'll never satisfy everyone. And on and on it goes. I think Stevie dresses for the video in mind and I personally think long blonde hair against black is no better compliment to it. Yes she's beautiful in other colors and looks, but I was happy with her look in this particular video. She seems most comfortable black n witchy.

The same goes for her songs. That's why I will no longer say Jane sucks or Just Like A Woman sucks because someone else will love those songs and I will be offending their tastes. That's the way I feel when someone says Love Is Like A River sucks, when I think it's one of the best she's ever written.

Us fans, we're never satisfied.

I wish we could hear Stevie around the 09:00 point in the second video, it looks like she's going all diva on the director and upset at something.

She definately looks pissed. At 9:25 it looks like she says, "it's stupid!"

Stevie looks extraordinary. I forgot how fresh and beautiful the long, parted with bangs hair was; now it seems so boring to me. Sheryl also looks beautiful. She's rather bony-looking now in her face, which isn't as flattering as she looked here in 1998.

I wish we could hear Stevie around the 09:00 point in the second video, it looks like she's going all diva on the director and upset at something. Her face even flushes, even under the makeup.

Hahaha it looks like she says something like, "We should have a guitar and a microphone and... *can't read her lips*... it's stupid!!"

She was bitching about how it did not make sense (to her at least) that she and Sher were standing there singing without a microphone to sing into. (Think like on Seven Wonders or the SDMHA videos) The director was saying something about how the concept of the video was they (the girls) were just walking onto the stage of a movie and bursting into song. Not giving a concert or recording a song. Having a microphone there would have taken the "concept" of "strolling onto a stage and singing a song" away.

Haha I like the "Shouldn't we have a microphone or something here?"
"No, No microphone"
Then it looks like she's thinking, "Well la dee da, fine then. Bite me."

If they had a microphone it would be too much like the Sorcerer video anyway. In regards to how they look in this video, they both look stunning, both such beautiful women. I have to agree a little bit with Louie, that if she was wearing something with a bit more color, or shape, she would have been even more banging....however she is forever stunning the way she is ♥

I agree that she should maybe wear something a bit more colourful from time to time. I was shocked by the red outfit she had for parts of Unleashed, it looked great!

Anyway, back to the song... I've always LOVED it, one of Stevie's best recent efforts, and would love to hear it live but I very much doubt we ever will. Bah!

I just think the whole concept of the video is kinda absurd. Sooo... here we are at this busy movie soundstage, where crew are tearing down (or building up?) some kind of fictitious set, and in wanders this exquisitely lit blonde woman dressed up like she just left an Italian funeral. So is she painting scenery, mopping the floor or carrying cables? Nope. Just twirling around a piece of scaffolding. WTF? Later on she's shot behind some raw 2 x 4 studs as if she was, like, doing the framing carpentry. She should have had on some bib overalls, a name tag with the union logo, a tool belt and some gloves! And I do wonder whether that massive set and all of those crew members were set up there specifically for this video, or whether they were on a real movie set and just took the opportunity to film there. It seems to me that the "crew" didn't really seem to be "working" unless they were actually filming. And if they were really crew people, wouldn't they also have to be in SAG in order to be filmed?

I think they missed an opportunity to play up the witchy theme of the movie and Stevie's persona. They should have ditched the movie set theme and recreated scenes of the movie with Stevie in it. Instead of wearing all black, she should have worn all white, as if saying, "yeah, I'm a witch, but at least I'm a good witch, bitch!"

It's really sad when you call a 13-year-old song "recent." :distress:

And on top of that, the original demo was recorded over 30 yrs. ago. many of us had the song (demo) decades before she officially released the Practical Magic version. Great song though! I'm really surprised it took her that long to record it, since nobody really took notice that Louise Goffin recorded it in 1981. Although it would have fit perfectly on TISL as recorded in place of TFFT or TMMS, or would have made a nifty FM song.

I had NO IDEA about this! I had the impression it was comissioned/written for Practical Magic. Like Twisted was for Twister. I rally love the song and so would be interested in any demos that are around, and especially the Louise Goffin version since that was officially released. I'll check youtube for that.

As for putting it on Trouble In Shangri-La, I always thought it should have been on there instead of That Made Me Stronger (the one really weak track on that album). I love Too Far From Texas though so I'd keep that one on! I suppose it was too late for that album though and had already been released, but it definitely should have been on Enchanted!

Here's a demo I have, it's really good quality. I think it's a Rumours era demo? I may be hearing things, but I'm fairly sure I can hear Christine in the harmonies.

Cool to see behind the scenes-thank you for posting it. Re: Microphone- Stevie likes to play with the ribbons when she's nervous or fidgety. While she looked cool, calm and collected, being on camera doesn't seem to be her favorite spot. The microphone is just one of the little comfort idiosyncrasies we are used to seeing her with on stage if she doesn't have a tamborine to occupy herself. In this day and age she doesn't really need a standing microphone to perform, but I think it's part of her comfort zone.

Thanks for this!! I love it. It really was a missed opportunity not doing more with this one...

I've also just heard the Louise Goffin version on youtube - oh dear! It's dreadful! I really, really don't like her voice at all. I'm not precious about others doing Stevie's material (and she's on backup on it anyway) but this is just BAD!

It's part of her stage act and without it, something would feel missing I think. Her decorated microphone is as much a character on stage as she is. Stevie's not an artist who'd look right just walking around stage performing with a wrap around mic to her face.

01-04-2011, 11:22 PM
Oh I agree. The mic is part of Stevie, though I prefer it decorated with real flowers and babies breath (like she did up until around 1986) instead of ribbons and crystal strands. I think during the SYW tour, she did the flowers again, but mixed with crystals?

Anyway, I think it is something she can hide behind. Also, she doesn't have to dance much if she has the mic on a stand. If I ever become a singer, I'd use a mic on a stand for sure, and not carry it in my hand or use a head-set.

Some of our current "stars" who perform with a mic piece and all the fireworks and background dancers and all that nonsense happening, are just trying to distract your eyes and ears from the fact they're really not so talented at all, just fortunate to land a deal today.

I agree --Stevie does look a little frumpy here. In the seventies/eighties she really mixed it up fashion wise. But she's gone a little stale. She could look so much better: more approachable with just a few adjustments. Yet, I know nothing about women's fashions, so who am I to suggest anything!

She looks so serious in this footage. There's absolutely nothing lively about her demeanor. I suspect she is sometime not easy to work with...a bit of a prima-donna. I'm sure she lets loose and lightens up on ocassion, but primarily she seems like she carries a very heavy aura -- the type of moody person who be exhausting to be around.

I love her seriousness and all business Queen-like demeanor. She's earned that right and to me it wouldn't make her a bitch. I don't think she looks frumpy either, if anything, beautiful and buttoned up and crisp clean polished. She loves her black, she'll wear other colors at times and at least we know she owns them. Again though, we don't all have to like the same things so it's all ok. :)

Thanks, Hejira, for sharing. I almost have my equilibrium back, sort of, and this helped!
I kept waiting for SN's wailing Drano backup vocal in close-up ("ohohohohoaagggh-h0haoooah") -behind 'and the days go by',- but we never get one in these 2 clips. I seem to recall in the video there was one close up, of her belting out those delish background vocal vowels.
Anyone else--I wonder? - I think this song has vastly improved with age, and stands as some of her strongest work. At the time, I liked it. Liked it swell. If not blown away by it.
Now, I think it's almost of greatness. We haven't heard that Stevieish rash of high notes belted in the background here and there, very much since- my favorite part of her voice.
Chart or cert info, anyone? Was the PM soundtrack certified gold, or platinum? Neither?
I recall promo 45s of the song in plain white sleeves, and a radio promo cd single with a nice pic sleeve, and vH1 airplay was strong. But, in the end, the song didn't do much, or did it?
Would be nice to find out it was a top 5 AC song and I never knew it.
