View Full Version : Redo: Favorite lady of the Mac

For some reason beyond me today, I remembered how I made this same exact poll when I first became a Ledgie, went on vacation, and had found that there was a huge fight over the fact that I had forgotten Bekka Bramlett. Well, I'm here to fix that, and this time, it's a redo of that old poll designed to fix that. Pick your favorite lady of the Mac (or if you can't decide, one of my joke answers ), yadda yadda yadda.

I was torn between Nicksy and Chrissy Mac (both are wonderful in their own way) and it was just impossible to decide who i liked more, so I decided to go and vote for another rocker chcik, namely the one and only Grace Slick, just cause it was too hard to decide

I remember that poll your talking about MissLadyLoki. Hopefully this will go "better"! ;)

Pick between Stevie and Christine! :distress: I consider myself 45% Stevie, 45% Christine and 10% other...I let you decide who falls into "other". So my fav FM song is a Stevie song, but the next 5 or so are Christine, going by my play count stats on Windows Media Player.

I'm going with Christine. She just has such a sweet and rich voice that hasn't changed in all these years. She carries herself with class and didn't seem to let the "rock and roll lifestyle" screw up her life. Plus she plays multiple instruments and sings at the same time, without either comprising her abilities and most importantly she is awesome during the Mirage video of "Eyes of the World" when is actually playing the tamborine and getting groovy! Ten seconds of bliss around the 0.50 mark!! :D

Christine doing Tusk during Mirage era concerts, or drumming on the chair during SHN from the end of Rumours tour - just great! and she was so beautiful and classy during the Dance...

i'll leave the "perhaps the most beautiful girl in the world" at the time to guys to drool over;)

however, with all this Dave Stewart talk lately, i'm reminded of the classy and beautiful lady with the voice and the presence that go with it - Annie Lennox:wavey: - "sisters are doing it for themselves"

This.

I wouldn't even be a FM fan it I hadn't heard Everywhere. But I wouldn't be a hardcore chiffon-head lunatic if I hadn't heard Fireflies.

According to Itunes my top played Mac songs are:

1.Fireflies
2.Why
3.Beautiful Child
4.Never Forget
5.Planets of the Universe (piano)

So my love for Christine and Stevie is so close to being equal, but Stevie just has the extra something.

Christine gave us Future Games, Bare Trees, Penguin, Mystery to Me, Heroes Are Hard To Find, Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, Tango in the Night, Behind the Mask, Time. That's 12 studio albums.

Stevie gave us Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, Tango in the Night, Behind the Mask, Say You Will. That's seven studio albums. She has five more to go to equal Christine's longevity. Thus, in party, my cheeky use of "air quotes." Though I also mean it. I voted for Stevie.

Quantity does not equal longevity!

By your reasoning, you could say that Stevie's solo career has twice the longevity of Christine's, even though Christine's first solo album came out before Buckingham Nicks.

Songs like Rhiannon & Landslide from the Fleetwood Mac album have stood the test of time, as has Christine's songs, I'm not really educated on Christine's songs before the album 'Fleetwood Mac', but I'm sure some of them have stood the test of time too....(Which sucks...so I'm going on YouTube to look some of these babies up..) There are all sorts of ways to spin numbers to suit your own motives. For instance, Christine clocked in 28 years in Fleetwood Mac; but Stevie has put in nearly 36. Christine recorded 12 studio albums; Stevie has done 7. Christine has charted 10 top 40 US singles; Stevie's had only 5. Christine recorded 47 stand alone studio (released) tracks with Fleetwood Mac; Stevie has recorded 30.

The lady of the Mac whose numbers just can't compete at all is Bekka. She basically did 1 year of hard time, had no charted singles, and the album itself didn't chart in the US either. Hell, she only recorded THREE SONGS released by Fleetwood Mac. So anyone who choses her as a favorite is nothing more than a contrarian in my eyes. :wavey:

Um... okay, I don't know how you arrived at that conclusion.

I love pre-Rumours Christine. A lot. But I can honestly say that no pre-Rumours song of hers has had the enduring notoriety of songs like "Black Magic Woman," "Albatross" or even "Sentimental Lady." The fact that you cannot recall any of her songs from this era kinda proves that they haven't exactly transcended time.

My point was not to confuse productivity with longevity. My point was that She got more done in the same amount of time actually. After all. She was five years on Stevie when she left after The Dance. And, as far as I'm concerned, Stevie's tenure ends with Say You Will--until a new album comes out. Say You Will came out five years after The Dance. Their tenures are tied. And one of them was more productive. Still, I voted for Stevie. She still gives me hope.

Folks, the only reason I made this poll was as a redo of a previous one that caused this huge war all cause I never knew Bekka Bramlett was ever a member of the Mac.

Anyways, about that longevity stuff, I find the number of years you spend in the music business to be like your age: it's a number that, at the end of the day, doesn't make any damn difference. You could spend a zillion years in the biz and have made awful music just as easily as you could've only spent a few years and made some killer stuff. Even though Chris has spent longer in the biz than Stevie has, they are simply too different to be compared, and I personally find both to be great in their own way.

You're undoubtedly right. But I think this kind of heated discussion really does serve a purpose, though. People bring out hard numbers and indisputable facts for these debates. I think there is healthy fact exchange to go along with the emotional head butting. I know I've learned so much by being bashed over the head from the likes of people such as ChiliD. These debates challenge folks to expand their horizons and give other iterations and members of this band at least a fair listen.

I dispute this solely because Stevie toured with Fleetwood Mac in 2009. Christine's last appearance with Fleetwood Mac was in 1998. To me, Stevie Nicks is still an active, though currently non-recording, member of Fleetwood Mac. We can spin the numbers a thousand different ways to support our own conclusions, it's all semantics in the end. I know Stevie in no way stacks up to Christine. But that'll never change the fact she will always be my emotional favorite as well.

True dat. Duran Duran were around for quite awhile, and they're the first to admit that their records weren't much cop. And Jeff Buckley's career ended so prematurely on a , quite frankly, masterpiece of an album. Same could be said for Nick Drake. Four Non Blondes had a pretty great thing going too with Bigger, Better, Faster, More...though that's a controversial viewpoint as I don't know many people who think of Linda Perry as anything more than a Highland Yodeller :p

Although having voted for Chris, I'm still not quite sure between Stevie and Chris who I would ultimately prefer. Stevie was my gateway into the world of Mac, and I love some of her solo work. But Chris has an integrity and skill that I admire whole heartedly. I don't know. Maybe if they could coagulate in some form into some wonderful mesh of their talents....oh wait. That's Fleetwood Mac lol.

SO MANY of the people here, only care about popularity contests.....who sold the most, who was in the band the longest, who spins around like a drunken sailor the best.
I couldn't give two sh*ts about who's popular. My own taste is just that.

I get that you like the woman, and that's completely fine. But maybe these so called "Bekka Bashers" just don't like her music? You ever think that instead of a personal attack on somebody they deem inferior to the brand, she just doesn't do it for them? She doesn't for me, and I'm not about to apologise for that. It isn't a popularity contest. Just a matter of personal taste. We're not all meant to like the same people. Congratulations, Bee. You have just won the Post of the Year Award :woohoo:

Anyways, you hit the nail right on the head! We all have different opinions on different things. For example, I think Robert Plant is probably the greatest lead singer ever, while my dad can only take his voice in doses. On the flip side, I absolutely hate rap, but my friend Sam loves it. On Bekka, I don't think she's inferior or anything, I just don't like her music, plain and simple. Again, I love me some pre-Rumours Christine. But there is nothing of hers from that era that gets played on the radio or has survived as a "classic." There isn't a "Don't Stop" or even a "Songbird" from that era that a casual FM fan would know about, let alone remember. I am sure some of those songs got played on the radio back when they were new, but none seem to have made much of an impact beyond that.

No contest for me. Stevie's voice is what got me into the Mac, whereas I skip Christine's songs everytime I listen to my Mac records. Not to belittle her contribution to the band's success because her keyboard playing was an integral part of the band's sound, but I don't think I've ever listened to a song of Christine's all the way through, unless Stevie was singing backup. I prefer Stevie's emotive "broken glass dipped in honey" type of voice to the smoothness of Christine's voice. Stevie's brilliant at conveying emotion with the tone of her voice, whereas Christine's voice just puts me to sleep. For me it's more or less like this: If I heard one Christine song, I've heard them all. They all sound the same to me. With Stevie you never know what to expect because no two of her live performances sound the same. Plus, I've always been mesmerized by Stevie's stage presence. I don't go for the whole fairy queen gimmick, but she's so tiny and yet she commands my attention in a way that makes it impossible for me to concentrate on anybody but her. She knows how to fill all that empty space on that big stage, and she makes it look effortless.

Now imagine if Nicksy were to rap and cover a song that, back in high school, I probably did the dance that came with it at either my junior or senior banquet (believe me, I have some stories from those). Now there, I think she'd be put out of her misery AND permanently banished from the Church of Rock n' Roll

I don't give a flying F*** if I was the only person to buy Time, go see them in '94 in concert, and how long or how many songs she recorded or when. She's my favorite. All you Bekka-bashers can go to hell...directly, do not pass "go".

Yeah, but you don't really like Bekka... and I'm totally gonna call you on it :D. I never hear you explain how her voice changed your life, or how her Fleetwood Mac contributions changed the world. I've never even heard you say a single Bekka song you enjoy, and I've been around you on various message boards for over a decade. You just root for Bekka because it ruffles the skirts of the Nicks fans, and because you resent the fact that the Rumours incarnation of the band eclipses all of the other ones. How can someone who recorded 3 songs in Fleetwood Mac be the premier member? It just makes no sense. And I don't think Bekka's 3 songs are bad at all... they just warrant no special attention, in my book. To each their own when it comes to taste and opinions. But it's my opinion that you're not even 1/4 of the Time fan you profess to be.

For what it's worth, I listened to Time several times today, as I have quite a few times in the past. It's not a bad album at all... but it's just doesn't jump out of the speakers, either. And also for what it's worth, I saw the Time tour as well... so I have the goods to back up my opinions. I have the album, and saw the tour. And the whole kit and kaboodle is a footnote in Mac history, at best.

I never said Bekka's "the premier member" (actually, that spot is reserved for Peter Green...and Peter Green only)...I said she's my favorite of the Fleetwood Mac female singers. Never said I DIDN'T like Stevie or Christine, now did I?

No, I only listened to Time about 4,000 times and re-ordered the songs on my playlist 3,999 times until I got it to sound more cohesive than the seemingly randomly ordered crap that Mick & Richard Dashut let hit the streets. I actually WORKED the album til it made sense in my own head. (did the same with the mind-boggling trash that was Tusk, too...made it to sound good to my ears after completely immersing myself in it for months on end) Yeah, I know Time is the least popular and most hated album in Fleetwood Mac's catalogue, but I love it...like John loved Yoko. Look at all the **** he had to take when he dumped the Bardot lookalike Cynthia (Rumours)and took up with Yoko...Yoko & Time have a lot in common. Maybe some crazed Stevie Nicks fan will accost me in front of MY house and gun me down for my preference of Bekka over Stevie...so be it. That'll be my legacy.

You sound much more crazed than any chiffon head. The idea that someone could actually prefer Bekka over Christine or Stevie is preposterous. Bekka is a random singer that you and others "love" only because she is the alternative. Nothing more than a Fleetwood Mac rebel

Christine bowed out when she was 54. Stevie, et al. have way surpassed Christine's longevity.

ITMT came out after that. Don't write her off 6 years early.

Although having voted for Chris, I'm still not quite sure between Stevie and Chris who I would ultimately prefer. Stevie was my gateway into the world of Mac, and I love some of her solo work. But Chris has an integrity and skill that I admire whole heartedly. At first, I loved Stevie the most. Fearlessness is fearlessness. But over the long haul, Christine's subtleties exerted their charms on me, & that got stronger & stronger. That made me stronger. So at some point, Christine became my favorite lady in the Mac, & I found comfort, character, & maturity in her sound & style.

Bekka wasn't around long enough in the Mac to make an impression on me, & I never bothered to check out her previous work. I like her song "Dreaming the Dream," but her delivery isn't up my alley. Plus, her performances of "Say You Love Me" & "Don't Stop" at the Konocti Harbor Spa & Resort in 1994 & 1995 were less excited & believable than any number of bar band singers I've heard do those songs.

Well, if you love her, use some of Christine's song lyrics to make your point too. I thought you were going to know how the sun feels every time it shines and instead all you found was comfort, character and maturity.

I'm not being argumentative in this reply AT ALL. I don't want you to think I'm trying to fight with you, because I respect your opinion.

To me, all of Stevie's songs sound the same. Writing that doesn't always make sense and sometimes sounds pretty half-assed. Her voice grates on me as much as Bekka's. That's the reason I'm not a Bekka fan, because I don't enjoy her voice and that's the sole reason. I don't doubt her as a person. Stevie, however, talks in circles and just outright annoys me. But that's my opinion. I feel like when I've heard one Stevie song, I've heard them all and that her voice gets pretty monotonous but again, it's just personal prefrence. Christine didn't fill the stage because she didn't want to and I relate to that completely and wholeheartedly. I feel like I do know what to expect from a Stevie performance: Scratchy vocals, chiffon, twirling and venomous looks at Lindsey. I find it more enchanting to watch John on stage.

, seriously ? Even now ? I was right in front of John when i saw them live in Paris, he didn't move. All of my photos were kind of blurred, except for John's ! I did watch his fingers, and was indeed impressed by his talent, but enchanting, really?
I get why Stevie annoys a lot of people, and if i didn't love her that much, she would annoy me too.

Yeah but Geogie was saying how she relates to how Christine didn't demand so much attention on stage, that's why she finds John so enchanting. I personally think he's pretty, I wouldn't say enchanting to me, but he's definitely interesting to watch in my opinion. He's so very humble but I still think he knows he's the best bass player out there

MicheleYou're being mean to me & I'm gonna wreak my vengeance, saith I. You know full well that pop song lyrics don't mean anything to me & I never pay them any heed.

Every time I hear a pop song lyric, it falls far short of the second paragraph of "Bleak House" or of Mitchell's "Hunger in America" essay as a verbal artifact of structure, scope, & vision+voice. The silly response to the "poetry" of Fleetwood Mac lyrics is Wimsatt's affective fallacy in action. Bah, humbug, I say to that.

But did you notice that Mrs. Bagnet said to Lady Dedlock: "You go your own way."

Well, you did say that made you stronger and fearlessness is fearlessness, so I got the impression that you are secretly very into Stevie's lyrics and that's why you luv her.

Stop being my twin!
Me too, David. Stevie is what pulled me into FM, but as time passed, Christine took over the role that kept me attached to FM. For me, there is no FM without Christine.

Chris was what balanced it all out. She was the middle ground. The foundation.

I too, have zero interest in a new album. I mean, I'd buy it, just because FM has been the soundtrack to my life. But just like SYW, I'd give it a couple months of listening, then put it away.

they were definitely wounded overall. but i think half of say you will is great. i do listen to it more than many other albums... and just skip majority of Stevis's songs. so, i do want new mac album, although i want Lindsey's more.

guess this post went off-topic of mac ladies all together... so, i love seeing interactions between Christine and Lindsey and i think they've done some great collaborations in the past. wish they'd do it again some time.
