It's been snowing here in North Carolina for the past 12 hours and I've been snuggled up in my blanket watching the Red Rocks DVD. For some reason, the snowy weather and a hot cup of cocoa really make this DVD more enjoyable. So...let's discuss it in explicit detail. Is there anyone on this forum who had a chance to see this specific show?

What I Like:

-I love the atmosphere!

-The band sounds great!

-The hair! The hair! THE HAIR!

-Releasing of the doves moment where Stevie turns into the 'bird whisperer' and translates for the dove! "She loves you! She told me!" lol

-When Stevie says, "This is serious."

-The part in "No Spoken Word" when Stevie sings, "I don't know how to learn from the pages of a AKLJAKSSJDDKASLJDFKSDHH BOOK!"

-The dance break in the middle of "Stand Back!"

-When she gets crazy at the end of "Edge of Seventeen."

-The 'edge' walk.

What I hate:

-The close-ups! Stevie looks beautiful, but they don't even match the hairstyle or the vibe of the performance! They are just thrown in!

-The cheesy choreography that the back-up singers were doing the entire show!

-The re-dubbed vocals! UGHHH! I want the original vocals! Although there are moments when the original vocals are heard. Anyone have a good copy of the original show?

-The show is way too short on the DVD! It's over as soon as you start the darn thing!

-EDITING! Who edited this? Absolutely horrible editing!

You probably don't know that until about 1995 when Lightyear re-released this it had been out of print to the general public for YEARS! But in '95 I finally got ahold of it through mail order and bought the VHS which was 30.00. Later when the DVD came along I bought that too. I first remember watching this show on HBO as a teen in 1987 or '88.

Well I'm glad it's on DVD for everyone to enjoy now, even if it's one big beautiful disaster. It's a shame that nobody has released the 1981 show on DVD!

And that just added to my frustration all those years I asked around at stores and video stores about Red Rocks and it's unavailability but they always had In Concert stocked from 1982-83 grrrrrr!

This video project should have been scrapped. It should have never been released to the public. The same for the Tango Live DVD. All because Stevie wanted to be remembered in the long run as a thin woman. Perhaps they would have been enjoyable if we were allowed to see the actual shows. Instead we got chopped and screwed performances.

Are you rerally enjoying this DVD Brett???

Well, last year, when I first received the Red Rocks DVD I was extremely disappointed when I found out about the re-dubbed vocals. I noticed the close-up shots right from the start. I've come to terms with it though. I do enjoy the Red Rocks show, but it could've been better if they left a lot of it alone. I have a feeling Stevie went in and was like, "I look horrible! I sound horrible! We are going to re-do this show right here in the studio!" Someone should have said, "Stevie, leave it alone!" I know her vocals weren't the best during this tour, but they were soooo raw, crazy, and filled with emotion! Isn't that what we all love about the RAL era? I do!

As for the Tango DVD, well...I can't even stomach it.

Fans will always like or dislike something about Stevie or The Mac on the fan boards. I don't even pay attention to it anymore. I like what I've always liked or disliked about them. It doesn't matter if others feel the same.

Her "I'm fresh out of rehab and now I'm looking at a project with a new pair of eyes" attitude manifested itself twice, no? Once for this video release, and again for 'Street Angel'.

Yes. Very true.

LOL! Whenever me and my best friend would fly all over the country to go see a Stevie show, we would always bring a portable TV/DVD combo, along with the Red Rocks DVD. Every night, after seeing her perform, we'd go back to our hotel room, make a few cocktails and play the DVD and laugh our asses off and rewind and rewatch certain parts like...

Talk To Me - "Seldom hurt WAHWOOOWWW must you keep your secrets"

Dreams - "You'll know. Wah wah wah, you'll know. Yeah...ha ha ha HA AH Ha..."

No Spoken Word - "...from the pages of a gjkild%&$#hdihgodddamn f***ing BOOK!"

and of course ALL of Edge Of Seventeen, including what we dubbed the "Stevie Shuffle" at the end. You know, that long shot where she shimmy's and shuffles before running to the mic for the, "I know what it sounds like..." part. :)

I agree about the 'TITN' live dvd- I watched it twice, 20+ years ago, and never bought it on vhs or dvd. No Lindsey, and SN so depressingly in decline- I recall a denim coat or cape or something denim that made her look enormous, but it was the vocal overdubs that really killed it for me. I tolerate the vocal overdubs and redone close-ups on her solo Red Rocks dvd, because I still find it to have some good Stevie performances, though the concert is too short. Why the TITN dvd- without Lindsey- has remained in print for so long is a mystery to me. I think it's SN at her worst. Michelej1 this week wrote 'tastes change'- The dvd is so reasonable, it might be interesting to buy it and see if there's something in it I like, decades later. I wonder if the live 'Seven Wonders' will still sound like a bloodless dirge to me. I loved the drano vocals on the TITN album.
Poor SN. So many great performances that should have been official dvds and are not.
I do love most of her most recent 'Soundstage' dvd very much. She did a good job.
I confess I find her scarf dance on 'How Still' embarrassing and so silly. I mean, she isn't remotely dancing and has this big ole hankerchief spinning through the air like she's dusting an invisible wardrobe hutch. I keep expecting to see some Lemon Pledge squirted in the air. Maybe a glass of wine would help me appreciate it. I think most people like it.

Ha. Yes, I like it. I find it kind of sexy. But I know how you feel. Most people liked her BATB garb and it positively horrified me when I first saw it at Caesar's Palace. I was sure she was doing some SNL skit.

Overdubbing is where you go in to the studio and 'enhance' the performance. This can be done by re-doing/fixing the vocals (which was heavily done for the Red Rocks DVD) and adding supplemental instrumentation.

Stevie's management pre-sold the Rock a Little tour broadcast rights to HBO, which aired the Red Rocks concert, so they had to deliver some kind of product to the cable network, as well as Lightyear Entertainment, the newly-formed home video distributor that scheduled "Live at Red Rocks" as its first music/concert home video release.

Releasing the actual footage could have further damaged her career considering how she looked and how poorly she sang. Despite the obvious "continuity" issues and problematic post-production, "Live at Red Rocks" still works. I don't mind that it's a patch job, but I think she looks amazing during the pick-up shots during Stand Back, and "Has Anyone Ever Written" is the definitive version for me. It's so much better than the CD version mainly due to the gorgeous ending. I love that the editor left in her strange, garbled squack during "No Spoken Word." She should have sang "not from the pages of a book" but her throat sounds rough and she's off-time, so she regains time by only pronouncing the word "book." It makes sense that they didn't offer a longer cut for the home video release, because they simply didn't have additional quality footage beyond the 60 minute cut prepared for HBO. Still, I would kill Katy Perry to see to. Well, I'd kill her any chance I get.

"Live at Red Rocks" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Video, Long Form - but lost to U2's "Rattle & Hum - and it was a huge seller and was awarded Gold sales status in 1988, so the industry views it as a success. (It's sales since '88 are not reported, but it wasn't available on DVD until 2007.) The Tango video was also certified Gold by the RIAA. Video certification has a different criteria than audio.

If she hadn't been vain about herself, (normal, who isn't?) and went and redone the footage, we probably wouldn't have gotten Red Rocks at all for our enjoyment. Like the Tusk bun, it is a piece of Stevie history (like it or not) and the only commercial solo footage we got of her for 20 years to add to our music video collection and a lot of us appreciate it and actually like it. Too many years went by without another video like this from her. I actually like Red Rocks more for the wildness she portrayed compared to Soundstage which was more polished, refined, and subdued.

I think there was always someone shooting video or taking pictures. Hey, anybody else see "The Promise"? The documentary about Springsteen recording Darkness On The Edge Of Town? Is this the RAL concert aired on radio nationally where she says in a very animated Valley Girl voice, 'I'm soooooaoo happy that you stayyyed" near the beginning of the concert?! I had that on cassette for years and loved the 'Edge' she did that show- my friend Colleen said 'it sounds like she's being electrocuted!" during the Edge wail in the middle. I'd love to hear that show again, for one.

Stevie herself must have been quite pleased with the vocal of 'BATB' from Red Rocks, it was released on vinyl as a b side in Europe on a 12"single I have for one of 'TOSOTM' releases- the Euro single releases for 'TOSOTM' were much more imaginative than in the US- one of the 12"singles has a gatefold cover with a very good inside pic from the same photo session as that a cover of 'Arizona Woman' that featured SN on the cover. The extended mixes of 'Long Way To Go' and 'Rooms On Fire' were scarce in the US but actual releases in the UK. The live 'Has Anyone Ever Written' is on the b side to one of those songs, don't feel like going downstairs to the Stevie collection to find out.

I just tried adjusting the pitch up 1.5 semitones and to my ears it sounds about right. What do your ears think?

^ and ^^
Is this the RAL concert aired on radio nationally where she says in a very animated Valley Girl voice, 'I'm soooooaoo happy that you stayyyed" near the beginning of the concert?! I had that on cassette for years and loved the 'Edge' she did that show- my friend Colleen said 'it sounds like she's being electrocuted!" during the Edge wail in the middle. I'd love to hear that show again, for one.

I thought this was from the US Fest???? That's what she says when she comes out on stage, and starts talking about how "Mammoth and Big" the gig is to all of them  I pretty sure she was that nervous they got her tanked before she even hit the stage.

Did anybody download this yet? Is it RR or US Fest? I really need US Fest so please let me know which one it is.

Also, do you want me to post my Red Rocks uncut if this is NOT it? If so I can do it today.

It is RR, but it seems way slow. Everyone sounds husky as hell and I know RR wasn't edited THAT much. So if you have a better copy then please post!

Yeah I just listened...
Here's the deal - I have the edited version of the show but in only has a 9 songs but it's good quality. I also have the uncut version but it's the same as this one, way too slow.
So I can either:
a) upload the clean, edited version with 9 tracks or
b) try to speed up the uncut version which will probably take a lot of time and effort but I'm willing to give it a shot.
What do you guys prefer?

Is your edited version the same audio from the DVD? Or is it uncut/unedited? I hope that question makes sense.

I sped it up a little bit so the beat is faster but their voices are still very low. Red Rocks Uncut needs a serious upgrade/remaster from someone with the proper equipment to do so (and adjust the pitch). Unfortunately I can't do it :(. Any volunteers?

i think the link is broken, but ...

http://www.bobvogt.com/high_bias/the_mix_room_guy.htm

The Mix Room Guy

In the spring/summer of 1987, Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven on Earth", was going on for a couple of months. Rick Nowles (Dan called him Dick Nose) was the jerk producer and Shelly Yakus and Marc DeSisto mixed most of it in B. Shelly was in that "don't even change your underwear" mode after having a #1 with "Luka" by Suzanne Vega. A couple of songs were mixed in the Mix Room by Steve MacMillan and I assisted. He was at that time the only Ocean Way guy who had moved from 2nd to 1st chair. A&M and Ocean Way had a pretty healthy rivalry and Steve wasn't the greatest to work with because of it.
One day we did vocals in C, and it was the worst vocal I'd ever heard. I had to go in the machine room because I got goofy and started laughing. They made vocal slaves with a stereo mix and she would sing 20 tracks, then it was comp hell. Pretty bad!

The record had some big hits, a #1 "Heaven is a Place on Earth" and a #2 "I Get Weak" in the fall/winter of '87/'88. Not many people knew about a supposed lawsuit settled out of court (big bucks) for copyright infringement between "Heaven" and Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name". Dick Nose was a Jingle producer, So go figure!!!.

This was the beginning of the A&M problem where Shelly was getting the big bucks but the Marc (The Pitbull) was actually mixing the records. He padded his time sheets to get extra dough, but when the **** goes to #1, that just ain't good enough. This problem eventually led almost all of us to quit.

Before the Belinda record, Dan Nash and Shelly had a falling out of sorts, because Dan had gotten close to the Stevie Nicks clique and Shelly felt he was losing a client. Sometime during the fall we started a project from hell in the Mix Room, "Stevie Nicks - Live at Red Rocks". It was an hour long concert video with all the close-up's reshot after the fact because Stevie was looking pretty bad.

Dan and Waddy were trying to keep the ship going straight and I played SSL guy. The time consumer was because of the new close-ups, the sync was off, so we floated the vocal around with the Lynx's (talking subframes) for hours and hours. The session's were always all-nighters, and it went on forever. One night I unplugged the remote from the Mitsu 32 with the machine on and of course it died and stopped the gig. Dan made me tell Stevie, which wasn't a whole lot of fun.

The good part was the "girls" (i.e. backup singers) were always around which was easy on the eyes. Needless to say, I don't think I ever watched the video after it came out.

Jimmy swore Zevon's "Reconsider Me" was a hit, and we did overdubs and a single remix with Roy Bittan from the E Street Band producing. Roy didn't have a clue on the SSL, which made it a little rough. He came in at 11 am clean shaven, and had a pretty good stubble by midnight. I've talked to a lot of people who really like the song, but radio didn't - it stiffed. Stevie Nicks has cut a version of it recently which is pretty cool.

Ok, corrected the pitch to what sounds right to my ears so it may still be off. Besides increasing the volume and adjusting the pitch, I left the files as they were (which are oddly split).

I just watched this for kicks. I couldn't even make it through the first minute. :(

I can't stand the editing of the Seven Wonders video or the rest of the show. There are so many quick cuts; the editor must have had ADD/obsessive complusive. It's hard to watch for many reasons. So many missed opportunites for decent documentation.

I had a nice suprise last night [ 2am] i turned on my TV for my usual 20 min before going to sleep, i couldn't believe it the US Fest was on, U2 were playing, so of course i watch it hoping they show Stevie's wild performance, & they did, i have the US Fest on DVD, ive watched it many times, but i swear some of last nights footage was different. Its not often we get to watch Stevie on Australian TV, so it was cool to see!!!

I can't ever bring myself to watch it. I made it through twice in the past and it's just... awful. I have to admit that the dove moment is adorable. That and the final "A Cream Cheese Production" credit () are the only reasons I can think of to sit through that hot mess. And I love concert videos.

I could watch the 1981 concert video any day. I wish the unedited show would come out on DVD/BluRay and it would make for a fantastic CD as well... the released performances of "Edge Of Seventeen" and "Gold And Braid" from this show (on Enchanted) sound great. I suppose it's tied up in some sort of legal issues or it would be out by now.

I've seen that too! on ABC2 last year sometime, I taped the whole thing. The two Stevie performances Outside the Rain and Stand Back are in awesome quality! it just goes to show that they could digitally remaster that whole show and release it on dvd if they wanted....

Silversprings did you notice some different footage with the Stand Back performance?? & yes it was awesome quality. btw, you most probs already have these DVD's, but if not JB Hi Fi have Red Rocks, The Dance & Stevie Live, Crystal Visions DVD/CD all for around $10. Ive been looking everywhere for all 4 , i thought i was hallucinating when Stevie Live at Red Rocks was staring at me eye level in the store. :blob1::blob2::] :D

Such a shame she felt the need to replace with unnessary fake close ups, i dont think she looked that bad anyway...

At first I didn't think so, but now that I've watched my copy and the old horrendous one on youtube, I think the are either more close-ups on the US Fest TV prog. version, or it's just that it's such better quality that it seems like they are different shots.

Yeah, thanks I have all those DVDs they're very cheap this time of year. They also have the Mirage Concert DVD for less than $20 it's not fantastic quality but it's definitely worth watching for Stevie's Sisters-speaking-in-tongues ending :D

The Red Rocks DVD (however edited) is one of my favourite Stevie Performances, I don't really hate the retakes or the overdubs, they just make me laugh. For example the editing on Stand Back is horrendous, there is one frame where Stevie and the Girls are singing "Stand Back, Stand Back" but the shot of Stevie just shows her looking out into the crowd like a deer in the headlights

I LOVE Red Rocks! I mean, if you can ignore the tawdry special effects and all...

One thing that's always bothered me though, is something that happens during Stand Back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-fxOS658H4
If you watch Stevie between 3:59 and 4:05, Stevie 'freezes' and then is sort of...edited back into the song. You guys have probably talked about this before, but it's something I've always wondered about. Maybe it's covering something as trivial as Stevie being away from the Mic; but I'd love to think that it was done to hide something a little more exciting.

Any thoughts?

Yes they freeze framed her during that part of Stand Back. It's very noticeable. Who knows if something happened or if it was just for video effect.

- I agree with your opinion of the close ups, really cheesy. However, I think that it may have really been Stevie's call. I mean, we've all seen pictures from this era, and while we all love Stevie. There are a few.. unpleasent, photos floating around :D

-It was 1986 :D

- I totally agree with your last three comments. Stevie is better live. If we wanted overdubbed vocals we'd listen to RAL. It is really short, the first time I watched it I was expecting a full concert... didn't happen :) And. Editing is horrendous. :P

IMO, RAL was a great time for Stevie vocally, but with all the drug abuse catching up to her (at least seen here) she wasn't able to fully enjoy what she had due to the fact (that I think) she was very upset with her appearance.

Bob Vogt passed away in 2006, I believe. One of the few people those of us outside the inner-SN circle know of whose ever spoken on this/can actually say he's SEEN the unedited Red Rocks footage.

I wonder if anywhere in that footage was anything shot in the dressing room detailed in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsXkvM6oJ7Y

If the reporter is to be believed, SN would have absolutely used that dressing room in 86...at all of the shows she played (3, I think?) at Red Rocks that year... Certainly, FM used this room because there is video of it in the Skies The Limit video.

I am just so thirsty for something new about Red Rocks!
