And some trivia for the younger kiddies around here... the guitar player wearing red is Mr Rick Vito... one of Lindsey's replacements in Fleetwood Mac. The backup singer on the far right is Ms Sara Fleetwood... ex wife of Mick Fleetwood, longtime friend, and sometimes roommate of Stevie's.

That video was a huge hit in the gay clubs in Dallas in the second half of 1994! I used to just geek out when Eric & I would walk into J.R.'s for a beer, and that guitar would start blaring and then we'd see Stevie on dozens of monitors throughout the bar!!!

They played that video all through to New Year's Eve!

I agree, but so many people love this track. I've come to realize that all her songs are brilliant. Even the ones I don't care for are loved by many others, an so on and so forth. We all have different tastes and opinions and they are what make up The Ledge for all of our entertainment pleasure.

As I recall, I had a copy from a copy like alot of Stevie related videos from the Timespace/Street Angel period. She does look really good here and I think she had a bit of a trashy style going for her around this time, but that does not bother me at all (no surprise I know).

The video just like the whole Street Angel album was ignored by both MTV and VH1 in 1994. I don't believe the Blue Denim video aired even once (I didn't even know it existed until 5 yrs. later). Stevie and Modern really dropped the ball on promotion for SA, I only recall a smattering of promotional interview clips in various magazines at the time of it's release as well as the Letterman and Leno TV appearances. Maybe Love did received decent adult contemporary airplay during the early summer. But If it wasn't for the success of "The Dance" and then the "Enchanted" box set and tour, Street Angel would have never gone gold.

Supposedly, Stevie did a video for "Unconditional Love" in 1993 ~ the pic in Enchanted with the candle and mirrors. Supposedly.

Now, in Summer 1994, the infamous Bill Gamelson told me that Stevie definitely did do a video for "Unconditional Love" and also "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind". I tend to believe Bill, despite his history, because he knew so much inside Stevie information that no one seemed to know.

At a record show in Houston in Late 1993, Bill told me that Stevie was in rehab and that's why Street Angel was pushed into 1994. I didn't believe him at the time, but in 1998, Stevie herself confirmed it when she went public with her Klonopin addiction and her detox and rehab in Late 1993. So, that's why I give credence to his claim that those two videos were filmed.

Who knows?

Christopher

It does make sense that promotion for Street Angel would have involved a video for the 1st single, esp. back in 1994 when it was pretty much a given. That's why it was bewildering that a video never aired or was mentioned for Maybe Love:confused: Looking back at the whole Street Angel fiasco, I think it was total chaos, They didn't even know what the 1st single was going to be, 1st it was Unconditional Love, then Blue Denim, and last minute it was Maybe Love... because of the 11th hour shake up of the album's line up and production changes. Also to try and make sense of it all you have to consider that during this time Stevie was slum dogging it with Chris Nicks as her creative director and Glen Parrish as her manager. No wonder Street Angel was blinded by the light of the day...It was a nightmare at the get go and total amateur hour for someone of Stevie's stature :(.

Plus it didn't help things that Stevie and the original producer, Glyn Johns did NOT get along with each other at all. I don't know if he was pushed on her to produce or if she wanted him because of his work with the Eagles. Oh man, Stevie was taking alot of bad advice at the time. Didn't help that she was not thinking clearly.

mikebise
11-22-2010, 06:44 PM
At least after detox, Stevie was thinking clearly. Bringing in Thom Panunzio and Roy Bittan to re-record "Jane" and "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind", as well as remixing the whole album and adding more overdubbed instruments, enhanced the album greatly.

Those weak, limp mixes that Glyn Johns turned in in February 1993 sound like sparse demos from 1973. Stevie made the right move in trying to beef up Street Angel's sound!

The only place I saw it besides the shack was

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think she looks
really bad in that video. Her weight at the time,
the hair and even the curtain clothes.

Compare her looks from the Blue Denim video
with The Soundstage Live In Chicago DVD. She
had an amazing turn around in those fifteen years.

This video was recorded at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee. I was at the show in the third row. She performed the song three times and took some songs out of the set that night. She had a little diva fit because someone on the camera crew was taking a long time to reload the camera.

Letterman and Leno are huge markets. I also recall quite a few magazine articles, including Details Magazine (another large market). Frankly, I think the promotion and subsequent tour were fairly normal promotion efforts for Stevie. I think simply put: the album just wasn't very good. "And not all the prayers in the world could save it".

If the 'Blue Denim' from 'Enchanted' is any indication of how the album would have sounded prior to doing the overdubs, I would agree that intervention was necessary. BD sounds so...empty. Though I think I've read some on this board saying they don't mind the mix that appeared on 'Enchanted'. Odd that Stevie chose it, over the superior-sounding one on the album or on the single.

Agreed - the only alt choice of the Street Angel songs chosen for Enchanted that I like better is "Rose Garden." Her vocal seems less "nasally" and more clear, but the lackluster arrangements on the other songs do not do them justice. BD sounds too wimpy and they even cut out the awesome guitar ending, stupid. The single remix of Blue Denim is top notch.

The Enchanted mixes are the wimpy 1993 original mixes. I think someone at Atlantic just grabbed them without thinking.

"Destiny" is 30 seconds shorter on the original mix, ugh. And the drums sound cheap. "Street Angel" is improved with Waddy's eerie 1994 guitar. "Blue Denim" wakes up and ROCKS in its album version mix (and even MORE in the Single Remix)!!! That flaccid original mix is sad.

"Rose Garden" ~ I like the one little extra "Oh no" on the original/Enchanted mix, but prefer the music on the real Street Angel with the added guitars and fuller sound.

Stevie & Co. did a LOT to improve Street Angel, JIMO!

:s I'm starting to understand why people keep accusing her of singing through her nose in her latter years. I suppose it must have alot to do with the hole in her septum, as well as the strain she's put her voice through with her pitch straining renditions of Rhiannon.

Are you sure you aren't confusing the Street Angel CD version with the version on 'Enchanted'? To my ears, the single version and the SA version are very close. The 'Enchanted' mix is the one that sounds vacant and dull.

So there's 3 versions of "Blue Denim" - the album version, the single version and the Enchanted box set version? I first bought the Crystal Vision DVD and love that version of "Blue Denim" - which version is that? Later on I got the Street Angel CD all excited about having Blue Denim on CD. Yet when I listened to it, something was missing. I thought a channel had dropped out or my speakers weren't working right. Anyway, when I wanna hear "Blue Denim" I put in the DVD.

The version you hear in the video is the single remix, it's almost identical to the album version on Street Angel, but it just has a little more kick to it, a little more "UMPH" behind it ... the one on the Enchanted boxed set is stripped down - doesn't do the song justice. I had my friend edit the video to it just for the sake of having something different - while the mix may be dull, his video editing skills are da bomb :-)

at the end of an Entertainment Tonight show.

That's exactly where I saw the video back in '94... and I only caught the interview by accident late at night. I remember how shocked I was at Stevie's appearance on Entertainment Tonight... and how gravelly her speaking voice had become. In fact, I'd become convinced afterwards that Stevie was the voice for Patty and Selma on the Simpsons.

http://www.ladyobama.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/patty-540x406.jpg

The only Stevie I'd known before that was the photos I'd had on Rumours and Bella Donna... and the archival footage from the Disney Fleetwood Mac: Going Home documentary (which Stevie did vocal, not camera commentary for). It was like the big mystery to me at the time what "modern" Stevie looked like. Looking back now, I think she looks great. At the time, her appearance was pretty sobering.

I think I got it now, Travis. The video you posted is of the Enchanted mix set to the music video. The original music video is of the single mix. Finally the album version is well the album version.

My favorite is the single mix/original video. The Enchanted mix is not much different from the album version, except for the delayed first verse. Both are missing too much, just seems to be drums, bass, and a okay vocal. Meanwhile the single mix kicks butt with more guitar and a stronger more intense vocals from Stevie. Especially towards the end...!:D

You got it Mac! I guess after hearing the single remix (original video), even the orig. CD version seems dull, but it really isn't as "dull" as the one on Enchanted. I do find the orig. version (on Street Angel) closer to the single remix, but again, just with not as much "punch" behind it. The single remix is my fave as well. I do love what JNX did though with the video I posted. He really captures the heart and feel of the music - watch it again, the parts where he added certain special effects ... it goes with the music so well.

More than anything, I look back at this era and just see passion and lack of fear. Stevie would never do anything kooky like braid her hair into a giant poodle-inspired poof these days :p. Even though she's heavy in the picture above, she wasn't afraid to put on a quirky witchy frock like that and go to a movie premier (the above pic was from the Interview With A Vampire premier). I just love all the big chunky necklaces she wore during the SA era too. She just seemed fearless with her appearance and performances back then, and that's what I liked so much.

Louie, I love your detailed descriptions! Kinda how I feel about that time as well.

I have to say, front row in Dallas in September 1994 at the last Street Angel concert, Stevie was on fire in a way I have rarely seen in her entire career. Just amazing! "Rhiannon" was so exciting and fierce! I was a little bummed at how subdued "Rhiannon" became 3 years later with The Dance tour, even though "Gold Dust Woman" and "Silver Springs" had that energy and anger!

-I have seen it before
-Her cleavage looks incredible and I find her extremely sexy in this video. The way she's swaying her hips and banging on that tambo and those EYES :p
-I was not a big fan in 1994 but I always say the same thing about that period and I never turn my nose up at the way she looked. It simply makes me sad, very very sad
-I would have loved to have given her a big hug back then and told her that everything was going to be alright but I don't think my arms would have fit around her. I kid, I kid

She's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay thinner now than she was in 1994. I've seen her up close.

Even though SA wasn't my favorite works from her (I still remember buying the disc that night in '94) and out in the store parking lot I popped it in the cd player expecting it to Rock A Lot and was SO disappointed when it rocked very little.... The instrumentals are still unbearable to listen to on most of the songs. What I do like now, looking back on that time period is all the witchy garb she wore and although I wasn't much for the SA crimped/braided hair at the time, it does look sort of diva-cool now compared to the straight and boring hair she's worn the past 13 years or more. I don't think her tresses would break now if she did more with it and got a little crazy and creative sometimes with the hairdryer and some scrunching. And sometimes she does still. I too was shocked when I watched her during the inauguration because to me she wasn't looking too well then. It also didn't help that whoever done her makeup that night made her look so pale and washed out. She could've looked better made up some more with some color to her. I prefer the way she does her own makeup because sometimes the wrong people get ahold of her.

Does anyone have a 256k or better MP3 of this version of the song? :blob1:
