If not "Whole Lotta Trouble" then my vote goes to ...

Ooh My Love

I'm listening to it now - go give is a listen. I can absolutely see / hear it. Lights dim ... they stay dim as the opening beats play ... then when those 4 drum beats hit - BOOM (at the 20 second mark - if you are listening to the song) that is when the lights come up and out comes Stevie. It totally has an opening song vibe.

"Ooh My Love" is my favorite song from TOSOTM. I agree; it would be a solid opener.

I still want her to open with "Nothing Ever Changes."

You advocate for "Rooms on Fire" every time you possibly can

I once thought the way the extended version of ROF starts could be a possible opener too, but I'm all for Ooh My Love right now. Will it ever happen? HELL NO but, I can dream.

Your point? :xoxo:

In my own defense:
1. It was a hit that the whole audience will be familiar with.
2. She hasn't done it in a while.
3. Done live it has an awesome intro to get the crowd riled up.
4. It's an outstanding song.
5. She looks hot in red.
6. Lindsay (me) loves it!

I say Stevie just goes balls to the wall next summer and busts out with "ALL RIGHT BABY!!". Sister Honey gets my vote! However, Ooh My Love and ROF would be good choices too. Also, Love Is Like A River and Nothing Ever Changes top my list too!

I can't help it, I know it's as tired and worn out as Stevie's cooze itself , but opening with:

Outside the Rain

Then bleeding into:

Dreams

Just works. :sorry:

The only other opener I've really ever liked was when she did the acapella Trouble In Shangri La. Too bad it wasn't live singing, though. Still, it was downright edgy for modern Stevie, though.

Perhaps Stevie will shock the socks right off of all of us and surprise us by opening her next tour with a song from her new album? :woohoo:

Sisters Of The Moon could be reworked to be a KILLER opener. I'm guessing that'd be another one Stevie wouldn't perform outside of the Mac, though. :(

It sounds like from Dave Stewart's latest Tweets that he and Stevie will in fact be touring together whenever Stevie drops her album. Perhaps he'll even sway her to mix up her setlist a bit. I doubt it, but we'll see!

I only VAGUELY remember this from my TISL show, seeing that I was nine years old. Anyone have a recording of it?

I am UNBELIEVABLY obsessed with this.

Let's start a petition for her to bring this back. I'm seriously in love with it.

So you guys all just think "Outside the Rain" is boring? Frankly, the opening is one of my favorite parts of a Stevie show.... I LOVE that song.

Silver Springs
10-25-2010, 06:49 PM
I wouldn't mind Highwayman, because I like it when shows start off slow and then kick up pace to a heavy crescendo, much like Silver Springs. But I realise that's not to everybody's taste.

I kinda liked seeing Fall From Grace as an opener at the casino shows this summer....

^^Ditto. FFG is a great opener!

My thoughts on OTR - I've never really liked the studio or live version of this song but I absolutely LIVE for the for transition music from Dreams to OTR live. It gives me chills just thinking about it and always brings me back to that feeling of being at a live show. This is pretty much also the reason I don't want her to get rid of Dreams in the set list, I won't get my transition! On another OTR note as I mentioned not being crazy about the music I've realized only within the last couple of months how brilliant this song is lyrically. Honestly, some of Stevie's most compelling and relateable lyrics ever:
Outside the rain
And the heart skips a beat
So you're lonely (yes Stevie, I am!)
Creature of the night
It's been almost a week
Can you love me only (could you??)
*swoon*

HEY! Nobody said nothin' about opening with "Angel!" :p :xoxo:

I just happen to really love Outside The Rain... it's one of my very favorite Stevie solo songs. I like the bleed in to Dreams, too. I think it's kind of a fun tradition (unlike her tradition of massacring Rhiannon the past 3 decades :D).

It would be over then. She'd make so many people happy that she wouldn't even have to put on the whole rest of the show.

I think these would be popular openers:

ROCK & ROLL
LISTEN TO THE RAIN
TALK TO ME
SEVEN WONDERS
CRYING IN THE NIGHT

Ooh My Love

Love the song, but if that's the opening number, 85% of the audience goes "WTF" and immediately grows restless. Stevie needs a hit/otherwise well known song to open her show to placate her live, paying audience.

Agreed. I think (especially with this new album) that Stevie should cool it with the covers, at least with performing so many of them.

I wouldn't mind seeing "Angel" or "Gold & Braid" as show openers. And I too would like to see "Rooms On Fire" put back in the mix. She doesn't do anything from TOSOTM. She should do at least one song from all her albums...oooh, but then we'd have to suffer through something from Street Angel...nevermind.

Waddy did a really long interview - I can't remember what publication - where he said he tried to get Stevie to open with Talk to Me, believing it's the perfect opener in regard to energy and familiarity.

Oh I don’t know Luke, I mean, OTR was never a single. Granted, more folks probably know it over Ooh My Love due to the fact she’s been forcing it on us for eons. People aren’t going to walk out of her show during the first song. She can open with it and THEN, go into something more familiar. I was just thinking yesterday while in my car listening to a Stevie mix I made in 1992 on cassette – Stevie and the Mac have basically been doing the same show ever since they started. They simply add in a few new selections with each new CD but overall, we get the same show every tour. In some ways I understand it; it’s like seeing an old friend you have not seen in while. However, I’ve just grown tired of the predicable set list. Adding one new song from the vault or a new cover song does nothing for me. I last saw Stevie in 2007 at the last show in Atlantic City and I was underwhelmed. I skipped out on 2008 and the Mac shows in 2009. I had almost zero interest in seeing them. As Stevie once said, there are some songs that fall under the category of “have to play”, I get that BUT, out with the old and in with the new I say.

Agreed - get rid of R&R - over it. The only song on that list that I used to think could be a good opener is "Seven Wonders", the way the extended version starts - I would take that in a sec over the predictible OTR/Dreams.

The lights go out, crowd is up on it's feet. From the darkness, you hear the wail of "IIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUU!"

"I Can't Wait" opens the show!!! :]

During the RAL tour, yes that would have been great because that tour was more "electrifying." These days Stevie just doesn't have the "umph" behind her to pull it off. I think "Ooh My Love" is a more suitable choice.

Oh I don’t know Luke, I mean, OTR was never a single. Granted, more folks probably know it over Ooh My Love due to the fact she’s been forcing it on us for eons. But Outside the Rain opens with a loud, abrupt F chord & chugs upward. It has "opening song" style all over it. Ooh My Love doesn't have that sort of immediacy or volume. It has a friendly little riff with a lugging bass, but it's better suited to a later point in the set. Its initial movement is downward--A flat to F minor. (It's actually the same chord progression as Sara.) The opening number has to pack a mightier punch.

She should definitely start with I Can't Wait. I love that song, and it is definitely a rockin' song.

But she can't sing I Can't Wait live. Even she admits it sounds awful. I would be very reluctant to want her to open with something she's that uncomfortable with and has a history of f****ng up.

That gets my vote, too. I "can't wait" for her to realize she is perfectly capable of doing a great 'I Can't Wait' live, she'd probably even get the lyrics right this time! It's not a very tough song. It's been decades, and it was a Top 20 song nationally and higher on the rock charts and had some dance cross-over play, so some people would know it straight off, and those who don't would like it. It'd be brave and fierce, and a perfect opening, and show an improved attitude about being willing to be good old rockin Stevie from song one!
She hasn't listened, heard, or cared, but for years I've been saying save 'Dreams' for just before 'Edge' or better, save it as an encore- make 'em want 'Dreams', not snooze through it, always placed the same in her set. She never sounds very alive singing it so early in the set, twas a good song once upon a time, but it's been a total yawn in concert since the 80s.

I Can't Wait or maybe No Spoken Word with a slightly longer intro.
