View Full Version : What do you think is Stevie's worst lyric?

Hi guys,
I'm guessing that the "chimpanzee" line will listed by a lot of you and yes, it is God-awful, but the other line that I think is up there as one of her worst has to be:
"she depends on her music like a husband" from Ghosts.
I actually like The Other Side Of The Mirror if I'm in the right mood, apart from the last track, and really like Ghosts too - but just not that line...ugggghhh!
What other lines make you all cringe?

Street Angel and OSOTM are full of bad lyrics, but the one I hate the most is:
"It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything" - Not Make Believe
"You can't have him, I do have him" also makes me cringe.

"It hurts my self-esteem, it hurts my everything...I am reeling...oh, it hurts my feelings" is pretty bad.
Her bellowing "Operation Desert Shield! Operation Desert Storm!" on Desert Angel always made me cringe.
"Would you write this for me, he says no, you write your songs yourself" is atrocious.
"Depends on her music like a husband" always bothered me, but it's far from her worst lyric. Same w/ the chimpanzee line.
I think "Gate & Garden" is about her vagina.
Oh, and "my walls are flaming." lol
I'm sure there are others that I can't think of right now.

'Silver Girl' and 'That Made Me Stronger' both have lyrics that I thought were so beneath her, 'girly girl' in SG and a lot of 'TMMS'. She liked the songs, though, so that's good. Sometimes, I think Stevie just has to do what Stevie thinks she has to do, whether or not the decisions make for artistically good choices.
I also hated 'Goodbye Baby' as an encore on the SYW tour, it seemed so manipulative and inappropriate, considering, as the final song of the concerts. I think it is pretty lousy on the cd also, but I know some people love the song, so no offense meant.
There's so much SN has written, recorded and performed that I do like a lot, so I focus more on that to not question my lifetime of fandom.
I agree with the thread-starter, Dodfather, that the forgetful chimpanzee will get some votes.
Uh, forgotten.

"They may tell you that you hold the world in you hands, but they always GIVE it back."

OK, I'm impressed. Never have heard that very intelligent observation before, good one.
Now, intrepretations:
'They may tell you that you hold the world in your hands, but they always give it back'
ok...
I get it. They told Stevie she had the world in her hands, but then 'they' took the world out of Stevie's hands, and gave the world back to the world, because the world belongs to itself, not to or in Stevie's hands."
OR
it's not about Stevie, 'you' hold the world in your hands, but 'they' take the world out of your hands where it shouldn't be, and 'give it back'--- to the world, where the world should be, not in your hands!
And sure, someone else has the ability to remove the world where it shouldn't be and give it back- to the world! A public service, of sorts.
APerfectLie's is the perfect logical explanation, the lyric is sort of strange! But to those of us who lived during 'RAL'- giving the world back to the world makes almost as much sense as 'this is not the world, not the world, not the world, not the real world' lovely and trippy hooky "Nightmare" remix that was more interesting than the version on the RAL album cd. The remix is so cool, both the 7"inch edit and the extended version on the 'ICW' maxi single. I just love that grainy black and white cover photo of Stevie on the ICW maxi, she looks so stunningly, gorgeously decadent! So 'Rock A Little'
Now take the world out of your hands and give it back to the world!

i actually like the vagueness of that lyric. "blue" being another word for sad. so is the sky not crying, but sad? or is the sky blue and happy (as in not "saddened" by clouds?)

I understand this too well. When you're in that frame of mind where activity is just beyond you and all you can do is find a quiet area to sit in, you find yourself staring at the oddest things just to pass the time. I had one of those days the other day, and after I found a quiet spot in the Drawing corridor I spent hours staring at a socket. I just didn't have the mental capacity for anything else.

I love these words because they were so pivitol of her career at that moment in time. Great way to begin her first solo album, if you ask moi.
You can ride high atop your pony--Stevie can be on top of the world, a big time rock and roll star flying on private planes, riding in expensive cars
I know you won't fall--very confident in who she is, an accomplished, famous star still rising
'Cause the whole thing's phony"--the entertainment business is sorta fake-players only love you when they're playing-sheltered from the real world

LOVE this thread, especially markolas' post on Page 1! Hilarious.
Here are a couple that haven't been mentioned yet:
"I should have turned away and ran" ("Smile at You")
It should be "run"!! Hearing that is like having a stone in my shoe.
"Some carry a stiletto in their garter/Along with everything else/That they carry" ("Alice")
This makes me laugh. It's really funny.
"So she stood there in the hallway frozen/In the dark/And her heart broke down/She cried/She fell to the floor/One tear..." etc. etc. ("Love Is")
This language is purpler than purple.
I also second the lines mentioned from "Jane," "Silver Girl," "Not Make Believe" and others. "Not Make Believe" is tragic because I love the music/arrangement for that song, but the words are a string of botched cliches ("They both rush by/Like a thief in the night" - should be thieVES! Another grammar fail!)

I agree with most of these, but I actually like "the sky is not crying, the sky is blue." I think it captures how everything goes black for you when you're down. Because of what's inside, you see a storm, even on a clear day. Misery loves company, so you imagine the sky is crying with you. Cerebrally, you know better.
It's not crying. It's indifferent. Nature is impervious to your pain. Life goes on for the world around you, even if it's ending in your heart.

As Christine McVie said, Stevie Nicks writes a LOT of songs, and some of them are rubbish. An alternative approach would be to not write so much, but then she'd be like one of those 'priests of nothing', who have a talent and don't use it.
For me, it goes with the territory that the more you write, the more you generate at BOTH extremes of the quality scale. So there's a direct relationship between how many great lines SN has written, and how many pish ones.

I love Sable on Blond too, and that line has always stuck out in a bad way in an otherwise awesome song. Then I read Stevie explaining it, and it actually made a lot of sense:
"But the song really is about learning to live with Stevie, learn to be a stranger, learn to live in silence, learn not to call on everybody else to get you out of everything or make everybody else pay for what you're going through, because you've chosen this life. Like Arthur learned with Excalibur, you do not ever call on your most precious magic unless you are literally out of other choices."
I don't really cringe when I hear it anymore, but it's still a weird, random line that needs more context within the song.

Although, Stevie Nicks should never sing the words Chimpanzee or Laundromat. In my mind, Stevie doesn't even know what a Laundromat is ;_;
When I lived in Az. I worked in a restaurant with a girl named Julie. When she found out I loved Stevie she related a story to me of how she used to work at a dry cleaners before she worked with me. She said Stevie used to bring her own dry cleaning in all the time. Julie didn't give a fu&k about our girl so I believed her.

I dunno, I kind of like that Stevie wrote a song about her cooter.
THANK YOU for using the word 'cooter' That seriously made my day!
Stevie's 'tang must be pretty frightening if it "scares you to death"

I love 'Beautiful Child' amongst the most of many songs by her that I love.
But I kind of wish she had phrased one line that has struck some as unintentionally funny differently: "You say it will be harder in the morning"--
Sounds like a guy who wants her to 'just go' until it/he is harder in the morning.
Then, hurry on back, please.
It's still a perfect song, anyway.

I’ll take off my cape for you
I’ll take down my hair for you
Some carry a stiletto in their garter along with everything else that they carry
One tear slid across her lips
To the corner of her mouth
And dropped to the floor
You feel good
I said it's funny that you understood
I knew you would
When you were good
You were very, very good
(Maybe the winner: )
Very little love exists through the rain and the fog
In her always hanging mirror :distress:
(I always thought the word was "mist" but every lyrics site including the Nicksfix says "mirror." Either way it stinks.)

"Stevie's words can be pretty obscure at best, you know. I mean, sometimes I didn't know what she was singing about but in her mind, those words make complete sense and I often used to wonder what on earth she was talking about. But then, you didn't care because the words just sounded so good"
Thanks for reminding me of that quote. It's a nice one. The one I had in mind, tho, was this, apparently from 'The Record' in 1982:
"Stevie’s very prolific," McVie notes. “She writes constantly, and all her songs are like babies to her, even though some of them are rubbish. When I write, I sit down and work on an idea until it’s finished, but Stevie cranks out songs all the time."
The whole interview (it's with just Lindsey and Chris, I think) is in the Blue Letter archives, here (hope this link works).

Oh, I know, I wasn't trying to correct you, I agree with both you and Christine :D True, some of Stevie's words would give an English teacher a heart attack but if they mean something to her, I think that is what counts. This thread is a laugh and I know it's lighthearted
The link does work and thankyou! I'd not seen that interview before :xoxo:

I love the song Fall From Grace, but I don't really like the lyric "Not all the kings horses, not all the kings men could put it back together."

Well then you will love this one! (I actually really love this song, but I get your angst toward the lyrics). Here are two different demos of it tho, because I think both are amazing! Especially the line, "I remember when I was the only one you'd ever love."

I wouldn't say it's a bad lyric but I always hated the chorus to Rooms on Fire.
"Well maybe I'm just thinking that the ROOMS are all on fire, every time you walk in the ROOM". Using the word "room" twice in the same sentence always irks me.

My least favourite lyrics are in 'Blue Denim'. I think the song is Ok, but I can't handle couplets like "I saw him the other day/ Saw him again yesterday" and "I turned away so he couldn't see/ I turned away it could never be."
I like the last stanza quite a bit, but the rest is a bit too mediocre for me.

"Well you know me better than I know myself. Can you write this for me? He says no, write your songs yourself"
Speaks for itself why it's so bad, but I also just don't like the literalness of it. Stevie lyrics are supposed to be foggy, indirect, and lacking in specificity so that they can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways making them applicable to most any quandary. That Made Me Stronger as a whole is just so blunt, to the point, and lacking in mystery and thus, beauty. I like the fact Stevie was so empowered by her encounter with Tom Petty which lead her to write this song, but I just wish she could have written about it in a bit more oblique fashion.

It does have some redeeming factors tho. "Dreams reoccur in my solitude, breaking my heart, injuring my mood. With all of the things that I thought I knew, it was you." "All those tears that we shed, don't call me when you're lonely." "Once more I tell the shadows of my soul to stay back. Everything has changed now and I don't want to go back and nothing you can say can change my mind" are among my favorites. So even tho it is a very literal song, I think the chorus is rather catchy and it does have some good lines scattered about! However, I know I am in the minority of people who enjoy this song.
And just FYI, thanks to you I went and listened to this song and have now spent the past 30 minutes listening to it on repeat! I guess I am just strange.

^^^^ We did a "reverse survivor" thing several years ago, and "That Made Me Stronger" was voted the worst Stevie song ever.
The lyrics are bad, but I think the music is ****ing terrible. Everything about that song is clunky and awkward to me. I do concede that the "dreams reoccur in my solitude" is its one saving grace.

Really bad lyrics peppered throughout Street Angel - Blue Denim is always a cringer for me from start to finish, the title track with rag dolls falling down stairs, the phantom of the opera and so in in Listen to the Rain, etc..
I Miss You is one of my all-time faves but I had to work to get beyond the invisible girl being her name, plus all the you/he shifts in the chorus parts.

Yeah that one always bugs me, every single river in the world ends lol!
I think, in stevie-speak, when she references the river never ending, she may be referring to the flow or movement (0f the water) in the river. Just a thought...
Stevie has unique and odd mannerisms in her lyric compositions. The effect of which is either poetic, expressive and intriguing or vague, disjointed, and pedestrian.

Haha. I could blame it on a brain fever, or a simple case of amnaesia when it comes to remembering how to percieve correctly. But the simple fact is, the line bugs the hell out of me. "My body tries to cry"? What in the hell does that mean? I try to picture in my head what she means, and all I can see is her slipping into convulsions. It's not a romantic/tragically romantic image to me at all. In fact it makes me a little nauseaus.
