What are your favorite songs that seem "haunting" to you? This is, of course, up to interpretation, but I LOVE haunting music of any kind and wanted some suggestions.

Some examples:

"Hurt" - Johnny Cash
"Hey You" - Pink Floyd
"Moonlight Sonata" - Beethoven
"The Sounds of Silence" - Simon & Garfunkel
"Wonderwall" - Ryan Adams
"Comptine d'un Autre" - Yann Tiersen
"Mad World" - Gary Jules
"Caresse sur l'ocean" - Les Choristes
"Nights in White Satin" - Moody Blues

Why by Annie Lennox.

Streets of Philadelphia by the boss.

I have to generally skip these when they come on randomly on the iPod. They reduce me to tears 9 times outta 10.

Oh End Of The Run definitely!! The spoken parts send chills down my spine.

I've never found Angels On The Balcony hauting as such, but it's by far the best track on Autoamerican :p

As well as Debbie's Wild Horses cover, I have a list now

Fade Away And Radiate - Blondie
As The World Falls Down - David Bowie
(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
Wave - Patti Smith

And the ahh's at the beginning of Prove Your Love. So beautiful and lingering.

There are so many songs I consider "haunting" that I love... Here are a few lesser-known ones, and I will likely share some more of my favorites as soon as I can think of them... ;p

"Let It Go" - Grace Slick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwnMYZS1hSc) - this track takes time to grow on you - but it really is an awesome song (around the 3:00 mark, things get REALLY interesting!!)
"Garden Of Man" - Grace Slick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCYPx2xuFfc) - the last track from her 1980 solo album Dreams - an excellent album!

Sissel Kyrkjebø is a Norwegian singer who probably has the most beautiful soprano voice I have ever heard. If you have ever seen James Cameron's Titanic, you have heard her voice as she is the one doing the vocalizations throughout the soundtrack. Most of her music falls into the categories of pop/classical/easy listening/folk:

"Dusk" - Sissel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPrOSFxJdsA) - 1st song I thought of when I read the initial post - lovely, beautiful, haunting - gives me goosebumps
"She Walks In Beauty" - Sissel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73w3wWYjcDk) - probably even more haunting than the last, but also very lovely - this one is from the Vanity Fair soundtrack

Porcupine Tree is a modern prog-rock band formed by Steven Wilson:

"Lips of Ashes" - Porcupine Tree - nice layered harmonies, and like most of their stuff, very nice production
"Buying New Soul" - Porcupine Tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9OLIzr66us) - very haunting keyboard riff starts this piece out, and it's really an interesting song
"Russia On Ice" - Porcupine Tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8qCCRHEjeo) - some haunting sections, some beautiful sections, some not-so-beautiful sections - overall an interesting piece of prog-rock

Hope some of you will enjoy them!

Another place you can find some beautiful & haunting melodies is in the "Dragon Quest" series in the form of symphonic suites, composed by Japanese composer Koichi Sugiyama. The DQ series was/is a popular game series in Japan, but was much less successful internationally, being known as "Dragon Warrior"... however the music is also legendary in Japan. Drawing from the styles of composers like Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, J.S. Bach, Mozart and even John Williams in addition to Japanese contemporaries, Sugiyama has created soundtracks to 9 games so far in the series (spanning 25 years). Once you hear some of the music that has come from this series (if you enjoy orchestral music), I think you'll understand why it is so loved by those who are familiar with it.

Here are a few of my favorite haunting melodies from the series:

"Requiem" - Dragon Quest II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ojVDQZw9nw) - a very sad, but pretty melody
"Heavenly Flight" - Dragon Quest III (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uT_5ayc2nI) - one of the best pieces from the entire series IMO - gorgeous melody
"Distant Memories" - Dragon Quest III (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzkK6ezf1pc) - the cello sings in this piece; another sad melody that exudes a sense of longing
"Homeland / Wagon Wheel's March" - Dragon Quest IV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyD6STXDMis) - I love pieces that make you feel like you're traveling and this is one of them, both in the melody of the first section and then in the insistent march rhythm of the second section
"Battle For The Glory" - Dragon Quest IV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFIKdY4P8iA) - grand and epic, a feeling of danger is pervasive here - the later section is the most haunting part - could easily be something out of a film soundtrack
"Magic Carpet / Ocean" - Dragon Quest V (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n_LdgB96X8) - although there are only a few minor chords in this piece, there is a hauntingly beautiful melody here
"Monsters In The Dungeon /Tower Of Death / Dark World" - Dragon Quest V (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll5RpCqRtyY) - an unusual but interesting melody - despite being somewhat lively, still haunting
"Noble Requiem / Saint" - Dragon Quest V (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRaWcMqZxUc) - a lovely piece - pretty, but very dark in tone
"At The Palace" - Dragon Quest VI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FWc-WwYioU) - a very Baroque arrangement here
"Ocean Waves" - Dragon Quest VI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUVPeNJVdOg) - another beautiful piece with a unique melody

There are many other really nice pieces from the series... awesome character themes, great town & castle themes, some exciting battle music, etc. If you like what you hear here, I encourage you to check out the symphonic suites to all the Dragon Quest games... a lot of which you can find on YouTube. You just have to ignore the original game soundtrack, which is not nearly as interesting to listen to on its own (although fun to compare to the symphonic versions!)

I hate this thread for making me listen to Madonna. The only thing I hate more than her music and her general "Madonna-ness" is her acting. She couldn't act her way through one of those really bad made for tv movies that can't even be bothered to dub it half decently.

Hey everyone...

There is a German singer/songwriter who I'm very fond of: Juliane Werding... and I think actually she might appeal to some fans of Stevie, Christine & Fleetwood Mac. That is, of course, if you don't mind listening to lyrics in a foreign language. I had a bunch of tracks of hers uploaded for another friend of mine, so I decided to pick 25 of my favorites, focusing on songs that have a somewhat "haunting" quality to me, and I uploaded them to a page to share with all of you! I also posted lyric translations for those wondering what her songs are about... she tends to be a poetic lyricist, not too terribly dissimilar to Stevie's style of storytelling (although some may be much easier to figure out than in Stevie's writings) Her voice has a somewhat deep, husky quality, particularly in recent years... however her singing style is very smooth and pleasant. She has been active since the early 1970's, but her best music has been made since the mid-1980's (IMO). Her musical style is mostly in the pop/rock genre, but she often incorporates world music influences, new age stylings, ambient textures and folk/country instrumentation.

To check her out, click here:
http://sotd.yolasite.com/haunting-selections.php

Hope you guys find something you like there!

Oh and a big thanks to everyone else who's shared some of their favorites... it's fun checking them out and sharing our diverse musical tastes!

Here's a picture montage I created a couple years ago for one of her songs, "Wüstensohn (Desert Son)", from her 2001 album "Es Gibt Kein Zurück (There's No Turning Back)":
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Ge6z438EJo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Ge6z438EJo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

And here is an official video clip for a song from her 2008 album "Ruhe vor dem Sturm (Calm Before The Storm)", called "Haus überm Meer (House Above The Sea)".
This song is very reminiscent of her style in the 80's.:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/urk6hJ-rldM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/urk6hJ-rldM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I have another one I should have added to my list earlier. I am reminded of this song a lot lately due to Dan Savage's amazing It Gets Better Project (http://www.itgetsbetterproject.com/), which was sparked by the many recent suicides of teens in the LGBTIQ community. This song makes me cry.

"Illusion" - VNV Nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVf2EeTMNJo)

Lyrics:

I know its hard to tell
How mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need
Is behind every door
Each time you get hurt
I don't want you to change
Cuz everyone has hopes
You're human after all

The feeling sometimes
Wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though
You never belong
This feeling is not sadness
This feeling is not joy
I truly understand
Please don't cry now

Please don't go
I want you to stay
I'm begging you please
Please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate
For all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion
Trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else
Who would comprehend
That some bad do lay claim
Divine purpose blesses them
Thats not what I believe
And it doesn't matter anyway

A part of your soul
Ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last
But I'm still not sure
But what I do know
Is to us, the world is different
As we are to the world
I guess you would know that

Please don't go
I want you to stay
I'm begging you please
Please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate
For all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion
Trying to change you

Please don't go
I want you to stay.
I'm begging you please
Oh please don't leave here
I don't want you to change
For all the hurt that you feel
This world is just illusion
Always trying to change you.

VNV's Ronan Harris has dedicated live performances of this song to Sophie Lancaster, a British teen who was kicked to death while trying to shield her boyfriend from getting kicked to death...for being goths. Here is a short film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW2ve6_BkRA) that was made to tell her story and support the anti-bullying foundation that her mother started in her honor, which uses another really haunting song, "Roads" by Portishead. Warning for those that might want to watch that, though - it's heartbreaking. I cry every time.

Speaking of Evanescence, have you ever heard a commercially unreleased song called "Field of Innocence"? This is a really good song, and it's a shame it didn't end up on their debut album... it also has a very eerie production sense (and a cut above most independent releases of the day) and to stay on topic, a nice haunting melody! ;)

Here it is:

Yeah. I remember coming across this years ago when I was a naughty child who downloaded music *slaps wrist*. I always thought it was a track from Origins that hadn't quite made the final cut. Some really good tracks of theirs never made it only an official album and that bugs me. October, Forgive Me and Goodnight being a couple that spring to mind. I wouldn't have minded hearing the studio versions of some of the songs they performed for the Anywhere But Home DVD, like Farther Away and Thoughtless. I'm sure they would have been interesting. Unless there have been studio versions and they completely passed me by lol.

Yeah I think a lot of us were naughty children from that standpoint! ;) Especially where unreleased songs were concerned...

A studio version of Farther Away was actually a b-side to the Bring Me To Life single:

Ooooo! *clickehs to listen*.

It doesn't really have the "pazazz" the live version had, but it's an interesting version of the song. It definitely has more of a metal/gothy style to it, which tends to turn me off of a couple of their earlier songs. Gah. I used to actually be a Goth once upon a time. It must be one of the oddest shifts ever, to go from Goth to fully fledged Hippie.

Absolutely love...

How Soon Is Now - The Smiths

The sound is just as haunting as it gets. p.s. I believe it was covered for the theme song of Charmed:D

Oh, good choice. "I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar."
