View Full Version : An Alternate "I Can't Wait"

While going through my "I Can't Wait"s this morning, I noticed one I hadn't labeled. I imported it from one of the CDs from Maureen's Mystery Box, but never listened to it all the way through until this morning. The sound quality is not good, but there are some substantial differences.
The intro is similar to the Single Mixes, except that the "Yes, I know you!" vocals start at the beginning with the the intro, and are echoed several times. Then, there is a different guitar in the intro before Stevie sings the first verse.
Next, after Stevie sings, "Sometimes she talks to him", the "She's" of "Sometimes, well, she's only dreaming" is played with back and forth, like vinyl scratching (or whatever that's called.)
Stevie's main vocal has mega echo throughout in parts. There are a few other effects on her voice here and there.
The biggest difference is at the end of the first chorus, when in the main version Stevie sings, "What can I do when I'm crazy for you?", instead on this version she has totally different vocals, singing:
"Yes, I know you, too much, baby, to be continued..."
During the "How will we feel twenty years from now?" part, there's a different synth in there playing, kind of eerily like a synthesized whistle. It reminds me of the synth playing in the instrumental part of the 12" Version of Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop".
More weird synths during and after the guitar solo...
More, completely different vocals near the end, overdubbed over the "How do I love you? How do I love you?" vocals:
"And I've got to know when I can see you again! Well..."
As the song is fade ending, there are some extra, screetchier Stevies rasping out some more different vocals, but I can't make them out.
I guess I never paid attention to this version since the sound is not great, but it's got some vocals not on any of the released versions/mixes. Maureen Loftus sure got some great rarities, circa 1997-2000.
Does anyone have this with great sound?

Okay, I transferred it to a wav file so I can upload it to Mediafire. I have a slow connection, as everyone may remember, but it's uploading now. I'll post the link when it's finished.
Again, not great sound, but a very interesting alternate mix with extra Stevie vocals!

I love ICW that starts with the "Yes I Know you!!" part before the first verse. I think you sent me one like that years ago, because that's how I first heard the song here in NY! Our local rock station (WBAB FM) used a mix that had Stevie (or the girls) shrieking "Yes I know you!" at the beginning and I never heard it again for many years. I thought maybe they did their own mix, but now I know it came direct from the source.

John, I think I sent you the UK Single Mix back in 1999. Both the US & UK Single Mixes begin with the "Yes, I know you!" part in the intro, but there are some differences:
UK: Has the full "How will we feel ten years from now?" part, and the guitar solo, but no instrumental break, as on the album version (Stevie's hand dance from the video). It has the extra ending vocals from the Extended Rock Mix as it fades.
US: Has the edited "How will we feel ten years from now?" part, like in the video, then the guitar solo, and includes the instrumental break/hand dance. The song ends exactly like the album version, no extra ending vocals.
This version I'm uploading is a completely different mix from the other two, and the "Yes, I know you" vocals happen right at the very beginning of the song, before they start on the US & UK Single Mixes. I may have sent you this one back in the day, but I forgot totally about it until today.
If the UK Single Mix is not commercially available, would it be within the rules here to upload it and post a link? I have a flawless copy of it!

Here it is. Not sure if this is any different than what Lindsay posted. Remember, not great sound quality, but definitely worth listening to and noting the differences.

I have this, but the sound quality on yours is actually better! i think the effect you mentioned, on the "she's" in "she-she's only dreaming" is a flaw in the file...it does it a several times, like in the second "thought we-weve been" and "out-out of touch" ...that shortly follows. and in a lot of other spots. its not like that on mine.
ps its the same as the one Lindsay posted

I wondered if that was the problem. Isn't it weird how we can all have the same recording, but different problems with them? Maureen's CDs were probably already fitzing out on my in 2005 when I imported this one.
The sounds not too awful. I certainly listened to worse quality sound for years before we started transferring the Masters!

oh yes! i had alot of stuff on cassette years before CDs we even mainstream that was horrible sound quality. The first copy of 'Julia' i ever owned sounded like someone was eating a sandwich right into the mic next to Stevie as she sang. LOL. i later got better copies and learned it was just deteriorated quality after making a cassette copy of a copy of a copy....of a copy.

Yeah, my first Stevie bootlegs in 1987 were on the vinyl Almanac LP, and the sound was great. Then, in 1988, with Uncirculated Rumours, the sound wildly varied, from terrific ("Rhiannon" piano demo, "The Maker Of Birds") to abysmal ("Julia" like you described it, "Blue Lamp", which sounded like a box fan was running on top of the tape recorder!). Aside from that, everything else I got through 1995 was on cassette and sounded just horrible, for the most part.
With all the Masters and the stuff that Maureen Loftus leaked (initially, she dubbed everything on cassettes!), the sound quality of most of Stevie's unreleased songs is now mostly very, very good to excellent. Some things I wrote off as something I'd never get to enjoy, I now delight in having fairly great copies of ("She Still Loves Him", "What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You?").
However, a few songs still haunt me with still fairly poor sound:
"Thousand Days" - The fast outtake from Rock A Little.
"All The King's Horses" - A very different keyboard/drum machine demo with Stevie & The Girls. I like the rock band versions, too, but this one is really cool with different lyrics, but the sound is poor.
"I Call You Missing" - Need I say more?
"Rooms On Fire" - Talked about cassette-dubbed to death! The demo with the very different lyrics sounds like it was recorded under water, and I've never heard an upgrade.
"Wild Heart" & "Nightbird" - The album versions with the full end lyrics, but cassette-dubbed into waaayyyyy sped up and tinny sound.
"Silver Springs" - Piano demo; Any upgrades? The two I have sound like someone is carrying the tape recorder and walking around the room away from and back to Stevie throughout.

Alamanac and the Uncirulated Rumours set i originally had both around the same time, but on a cassette someone sent me. I dont recall dealing directly with Maureen, but with someone else who did cause i have all the CDs shes connected to.
As far as your list goes, i think i have all of these. Not anything in super high quality, but most are 'listenable'. Ill post what i have.
And I have one to add:
Jimmy Come On Back. or whatever its called. Ive read lyrics online for this and was amazed that anyone could make any sense of what she was sayin because of the horrilble quality.

Ooh, exciting! I look forward to them!
"Jimmy Come On Back" ~ What astounds me is that the music in the song is very clear and of good sound quality. It's Stevie's vocals that are dim and indecipherable! The best sounding version I have is the shortest, and the other two vocal takes go on much longer, more wailing and shrieking... >sigh< I can tell it's a classic song, but the vocals are so dim. The music rocks!
BTW, you can definitely place this song as from Rock A Little, since Marilyn Martin is singing on it, and that's the only album of Stevie's she sang on. Stevie didn't even meet her until 1983 on The Wild Heart tour, where Marilyn was singing backup for Joe Walsh, Stevie's opening act.

Interesting...i always assumed it was from WH era, because i have CDs of demo collections and I have 3 versions on WH demos/outtakes cds but none on RAL

Yes, but the Marilyn Martin vocals make it post-June 1983. I read an interview with Marilyn in the Austin American Statesman in 1985, and she talks about meeting Stevie while on The Wild Heart tour in 1983 while singing for Joe. Stevie liked her vocals so much that she had Marilyn come out and sing backup on a few songs on that tour. I remember at the Texas shows, since Carolyn Brooks lives in Dallas, on a few songs we had four girls singing back up! "Rhiannon" and "Edge Of Seventeen" I definitely remember, and Carolyn also sang on If Anyone Falls" and "Beauty And The Beast".
Stevie and her touring band also recorded "Sorcerer" for Streets Of Fire on that tour, and that's how Marilyn got lead vocals.
Maybe "Jimmy Come On Back" was recorded during that tour as well, like "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star", which was recorded in July 1983, and Joe and Marilyn are both on that song. Maybe that's why it has that The Wild Heart feel.
Or maybe it was recorded in Dallas in 1984, one of the earlier Rock A Little tracks, and Stevie was still aiming for more of a rock and roll record.

ha! Now that you say it, I can totally hear Marilyn's vocals on OMBTRARS!

Yeah, John, especially on the unedited, non-fades-too-early version (not the fades-way-too-early version on Enchanted)! As the long version starts fading, Marilyn really gets going with her crazy wails!!! Going all Southern Blues or Gospel or whatever in her wailing...
Marilyn is also very noticeable on "Some Become Strangers".

Of course! Especially the "Baby you're!" part, right before Stevie starts her little "you're no stranger, not that I am" vamp..

I had a 12 inch single of this...my aunt sold it at a garage sale this summer...anyway it was different than the others I've seen and heard. Kind of like my 7 Wonders Maximum single. 80s was an awesome time to be a kid in Boston area...Harvard Square. Had these Indy dusty music stores and you'd spend all day sorting and sifting...but always finding weird one of a kinders.

The 12" singles of the 80's were all readily available. All you needed was any record store pretty much. I got all of the 12" singles that came out in the States when they were released (the only ones released were "I Can't Wait", "Big Love", "Seven Wonders", "Little Lies" and I believe "Family Man"). Of course in Europe a whole ton more were released.

I didn't get into the bootlegs until the early 90's ('93 or so) and my first batch were ten 100min cassettes LOADED with stuff. The quality ranged from decent to really bad. When Maureen came along I had no problems paying her outrageous prices for the discs just because the quality was so much better.
The only problem I had with the master reels was when we would get them, there would be SO much stuff on there it was hard to find time to listen to it all. After all these years I know there's a bunch of stuff I have that I've never listened to. I have at least 100 CD's of master reel stuff and I know there's a ton of it that would still be brand new to me. This is why I love these posts that point out hidden gems, I know I have them, just have to pull them up!!!

That's exactly what happened to me! A year ago, I started editing the Masters, digging out songs from false starts/flubs/mislabelling/etc., and I found about 250 EXTRA versions of songs that I never listened to!
Finding those takes and editing off the barnacles surrounding them has given countless HOURS of Stevie Listening Pleasure! My favourite versions of "The Dealer", "How Still My Love", "Sanctuary", "Starshine Silver" and "Gold and Braid" were all discovered in editing out parts I had ignored before on the Masters, because they were surrounded by studio junk or dead air.
