So I had never heard of Florence + The Machine until I watched the VMAs. Does the outfit not scream Stevie?

She is a fan and you may or may not have heard about her cover of The Chain at this year's Glastonbury, I personally liked it but i know others that weren't so keen. I also saw another festival performance on the TV (i forget which) where she wore an outfit that was reminiscent of the outfit worn by Stevie on the Belladonna cover. I think it is great that someone as young as she is clearly influenced and obviously holds a lot of respect for The Mac, she did speak of her disappointment that they didn't play Glastonbury this year after the rumours that they might

Florence also mentioned in a British paper earlier this year (perhaps someone could dig it up) that she was obsessed with Stevie, and that she watched all her old performances on YouTube, studying her, loving the way Stevie moved around the stage etc etc.

I keep hearing about Florence being "so young," and it always baffles me... she looks about 35-40 to me. So I just googled her, and it turns out I'm older than her... she's 24!
I find her and her music pretty annoying, but kudos for her respecting the elders of rock! :p

WHAT?!?!?!?!?
Have you heard all of Lungs? "Howl"? "Rabbit Heart"? "Cosmic Love"? "You've Got The Love"?
I'm obsessed.

Ha yeah I liked a few songs when I first heard her but now, meh. Her voice annoys me. You can definitely see some Stevie inspiration in her though.

Well Florence and her machine made an impact on a few people it seems...
From Billboard:
A quick look at the most notable jumps and drops on this week's Billboard 200 albums and Hot 100 singles charts.
Florence + the Machine: At No. 44, the act's "Lungs" album vaults 56 positions (8,000; up 70%) with the second-largest positional jump on the tally, thanks to the act's buzzed-about performance of "Dogs Days Are Over" on last Sunday night's (Sept. 12) MTV Video Music Awards. Expect another increase next week once a full week's worth of impact is felt from the show. (SoundScan's tracking week ends at the close of business each Sunday.) Over on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Dog Days" debuts at No. 93 off the strength of its 27,000 downloads sold last week (up 276%).

OMG. At the VMAs I swore she was in her 40! Glad I'm not the only one who thought so.

I'm impressed. There's new life to 'The Chain' in being played by a young band- a good band, with outstanding bass and drum work in this clip.
Florence seems to be a force, especially for being only 24- her vocals throughout and particularly at the ending of the song were vital, fresh, and inspired. Especially with 'The Chain' being such a well-known song, she put her own spin on it, and it works.
Have to say this version topped FM's 'Unleashed' tour version, hands down. The best version has to be the '82 Mirage Tour home video, though. Stevie was wailing on it and Fleetwood Mac was incredible that night, or over the 2 nights the concerts were filmed- whichever.
Thanks for sharing this performance by a new band, so many years later. It's really good.

Now I'm impressed twice. Vocally, I hear a lot of Grace Slick in Florence, though Florence may have even more vocal chops than Grace did.
Florence does look much more mature than 24 years old in this VMA clip, but it can be the pancake, the Bowie circa 'Diamond Dogs'-era dye, with too harsh lighting. It's youtube, but the lighting seems way severe. Or, she may have been jet lagged!
She looks much younger in the other clip, of 'The Chain,' which was filmed outdoors in daylight and her youth shows. Talented new singer, for sure.

HAHA! When we watched the VMAs, i said to my partner "OMG! Kate (Bush) and Stevie had a baby!" I thought she was awesome, went out and got the cd the next day, and I love it...and now, having seen this video, i love her even more!!! I really like the way she does The Chain here...Her voice does remind me of Fiona Apple a bit, too...but her style is pure Stevie/Kate...

What, what, WHAT?!
Are you familiair with her album or have you only heard one song? Seriously wondering.
I've heard people say her music is just not their thing, but "annoying"? Never, especially not from people that like Stevie as wel.
Anywho, Florence writes great songs and her music is amazing, I hope her second album is going to be just as good as "Lungs", I played the hell out of that one and I need something new.

I really like Florence and the Machine, Lungs was one of my favourite albums of last year, and I still like listening to it now.
She does sorta dress like Stevie, but, is it just me, or does she also look a LOT like Kate Bush? When we were watching the Brit Awards, my friend texted me asking why Kate Bush (she knows I'm a fan) was singing with Dizzee Rascal

I havent watched much of Florence, i dont like her voice, but i wouldn't be surprised if Florence does try mimic Stevie on stage. Unfortunately for Florence she will get nowhere near the performances that Stevie has put out over the years.
Florence is not original and does one cover record after another, none of them anywhere near as good as the originals.
I was disappointed to hear that she covered Chain at Glasto because i dont think she would do it justice. It is such an important FM song and i can imagine how it was all about Florence on stage and not about the song itself.

SN is my all time favourite and i find Florences voice annoying too, I haven't bothered listening to her album because i havent liked any of her releases/covers that are on the radio all the time.

Her Album is incredible! I don't think she is a covers artist, sure her biggest hit at this point in time is a cover, but she has made it relevant to a new audience.
She's awesome! sure she occasionally goes wild and lets out some flat or off sounding notes. Does anyone remember the end of the Wild Heart tour and Rock A Little?
Florence has that same manic energy possibly minus the excessive amounts of coke, Plus an incredible vocal range to pull it off.
Not that i'm saying I like her because of all the Nicksisms but that is definitely a small part of her appeal. She has that same airy, delicate but strong feel to her that Stevie did. And she doesn't lip synch, so I'm sold.
As well as the fact that she isn't just spewing the same old crap I've been hearing for the last decade out of mainstream radio. If you don't believe me, I urge to listen to any of her live perfomances on youtube, particularly a live cover of beyonce's Halo which blows beyonce out of the water.

I think she's great, too...love the album, the covers and the live stuff... she is an original, which is what i like about her...sure she appropriates stuff from other artists (her influences) but who doesn't? and it seems that everyone does some (relatively) current cover or other these days...

I've said it before on here and I'll say it again, I love Florence.
I'm a music snob, most people know that and if I don't like an artist I don't hesitate to make that fact known. As Kurt Cobain said, "I like making fun of musicians whom I feel plagerize or offend music as art by exploiting their embarrasinly pathetic versions of their work."
Florence is different because, like Stevie, she's prudish, she pours her heart and soul into her music and she genuinely cares about her fans. Florence breathed a wonderfully fresh and much needed breath of air into 2009's music scene. The layers of chiffon are a relatively new thing, too. She used to go on stage dressed as Robin or wearing vintage jumpsuits and glitter smudged on her face a-la Marc Bolan.

I'd like to see Stevie have ever done this:

I promise you all that she doesn't look 40 when you see her face too face and in the flesh either.
I find her and her music pretty annoying, but kudos for her respecting the elders of rock! :p
This baffles me on your part and mine. I hope that one day I can put my finger on why - for me - because it's odd. I find the two artists similar. Not by any means identical but defiitely similar and yet as we all know I adore Florence but I find Stevie and her music annoying. Then, on the other hand you love Stevie but find Florence and her music annoying. These are the times when I really really wish I did psychology.

I saw her perform six months ago in Boston and have tickets to her Oct.31st show at Boston's House of Blues. I went to the first show based on advance buzz and to see what the all the fuss was about and I'm glad I did. She was fantastic. She has a big, expressive voice, tons of charisma and she's distinctive. She's refreshingly far removed from the put-together-by-committee-and-focus-groups pop fakes (I'm talking to you Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus) and feels in charge of her own music.
Here are two photos from the Boston show. Notice the flowers on the mic stand.

I find her to be more talented, interesting, and more credible than the over-hyped anomoly Lady Gaga. I think her and Stevie share a similarity in that their voices are an aquired taste for some ears.

I definately thought of Stevie when she came out in that dress. I had never heard of her before either but I loved the song.
