Sorry I can't embed it, but I found this on Facebook and I couldn't resist passing it on. Stevie's commentary is hilarious, especially the part about the killer horse, and I can see why they made the second vid. Enjoy!

That's from the Crystal Visions DVD. What's even more interesting is that the video concept was created for the original first single from The Wild Heart ~ "If Anyone Falls"! Everything was created with "If Anyone Falls" in mind, and then, at the last minute, "Stand Back" became the lead single, and the first video was filmed with that same concept that was originally created for "If Anyone Falls".

Frankly, I prefer chickens, burning houses, and men being shot more than poorly dressed dancers breaking through fake walls and Stevie on a random treadmill. Give me the Civil War version any day!

I never knew that. Now that's an interesting tidbit. Can i see the final If Anyone Falls vid?

I'm sure it's on YouTube. It's the ballet version, where the storyline is Lori trying to steal Stevie's man! ;) Also, "If Anyone Falls" features a video crossover with Mick's "I Want You Back" video, also from September/October 1983.
"I Want You Back", which has Mick running around in a monk's robe, ends with a shot of Stevie, wearing a halo and holding a candle, surrounded by candles. Then, the "If Anyone Falls" video begins with Stevie & Mick, wearing the exact same clothes from the end of his video, walking across the screen, completing the crossover. Check them both out for full effect!!! :)

I like the Civil War version better than the treadmill version. The second version is just your typical 80's cheesy dance video. I don't really see why Stevie hates it so much. With each of the videos on the Crystal Visions DVD she pretty much says why she doesn't like the videos, mostly because they don't make sense. But very few videos from that time made any sense. The video for "If Anyone Falls" has always been my favorite Stevie video and she says thruout the commentary how it makes no sense.
I never knew that the Civil War concept was for "If Anyone Falls", actually that concept DOES make more sense for IAF over "Stand Back".

You need to get the "Crystal Visions" CD/DVD combo. You can watch all of Stevie's video with her commentary, plus you get behind the scenes of the recording of the "Bella Donna" album. Great stuff.

In Danny Goldberg's book of 2 years ago (he co-founded Modern Records with Stevie and Paul Fishkin), he reveals the truth about the Civil War concept being for the original lead single, "If Anyone Falls", and that it was too late to change the theme when "Stand Back" became the new lead single (sets already built, costumes bought, director hired, etc.) After watching the final results, everyone agreed that they should go ahead and film another video for "Stand Back".
BTW, Danny also reveals how he is the one who directed the "Edge Of Seventeen" video. He thought it looked too unprofessional to be released. I disagree with him, since it's no worse than "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", and Stevie does a better job lip-synching in "Edge Of Seventeen"!!! ;)

I'll have to look for this book, sounds cool. I agree, I like the "Edge Of Seventeen" video, I was hoping that was what was on Crystal Visions.
I never understood why Stevie didn't like the Civil War clip, but now it makes sense. I still like the video though!!

I remember well in the 80s, that a popular West Hollywood video-bar called Rage would sometimes show the 'Civil War' version of 'Stand Back' and it would get huge laughter from the patrons, who somehow found it campy. How Rage got a copy of it way back when, I don't know. The well-known or well-circulated "rumour" given why the video was scrapped and re-shot was that Stevie looked too heavy in it. Silly. But that was the folklore, until a rep from Modern said, cleverly, 'the dress she was wearing in the original version would have made Olive Oil look fat, we just changed our minds about the video concept.' Whichever. I like both SB videos!

The SN chapter is posted here over on the Rumours forum (hope this link works, I don't really know what I'm doing!)
