I think a good 'ole John appreciation thread is in order. My copy of The Authorized History by Samuel Graham arrived today and I scanned the photos that I hadn't seen. Most of them were of John and it (among other events today) reminded me just how much I love him and the way he plays.
I had John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Crusade album on (by accident, I was supposed to have their album with Clapton on) and just fell in love with his playing all over again. It's so distinguishable and warm, particularly on Driving Sideways. I thouroughly enjoy playing John's bassline's and could play Say You Love Me for hours on end without a jot of boredom.
His sense of humour is wonderful, too.

People have gotta give Johnny Mac some more credit. While I have trouble hearing bass in songs, he does do a good job of playing it. AndI do have to give him and Mick plenty of credit of knowing what is appropriate to play, and doing it well too. And don't even get me started on The Chain!

I just adore John's sense of humor, too. I think he's the only member of the Rumours incarnation of Fleetwood Mac I'd actually like to meet, because he seems so real and humble. I fear I'd be disappointed if I met Stevie, Mick, or Lindsey... they all walk around with the "I'm a STAR!" attitude pasted on their sleeves. John seems keenly in touch with reality, and after being in a world famous band for four and a half decades, that's pretty cool! I've always enjoyed John's bass style tremendously, too. More so than any other rock bassist that I can think of, he provides an entire counter melody to Fleetwood Mac's songs. He's not a passive bassist at all. His style is utterly distinctive in the rock world, IMO.

Obviously, I rarely have trouble hearing the bass in 'real' music but I could tell you John was playing from a mile off. The Danny Douma song Hate You is a really wonderful example of how distinctive his playing is.

Also compare FMac's "Blue Letter" to the Curtis Bros own version to hear how John took the song to a whole 'nother level.

For some odd reason, I just have trouble detecting the bass within a song, but when I do, I notice, and John can make or break a song with his playing.
Oh yeah, and how could I forget this quote we all know and love: "I play bass."

I'm so glad you posted this because I've been thinking that there's not enough love for the Johnster around. I just love his attitude towards what he does, as opposed to all the "horse****" (as he says) that comes with the job. He, along with Chris I guess, always seemed to have this lovely, typically British laidback outlook on the whole thing.
Plus. He was mega cute back in the day! Lindsey who? :p

Best bassist and probably the coolest guy ever! I find myself humming his basslines just as often as the song melodies... just awesome :woohoo:

This picture is awesome! You really gotta love those cut off jean shorts. Shows off those sexy legs.
John is always the coolest guy in the room, booty shorts or not.

Agree with everything that's been said in praise of John, and also don't forget that he's the only one of the Rumours line-up to come and do a Q&A with the Ledgies! Top man.

His bass was rich in The Chain! He's a great bass player!

Who doesn't love J. McVie? I love the fancy riff he does at the beginning of Straight Back. That's just one of many.

You've hit the nail on the head there. I think the band needs someone like John.
