I was listening to a really cool version of GDW from the Rumours tour from their first night in MSG. Back then Stevie often did the wails at the end of the song as well that sounded similar to the wails that end the studio version. However, with this one I was shocked at the sound I heard. First I thought it must have come from a guitar or something strange. It was very high pitched. But then as this noise got deep and I realized it was clearly Stevie's voice.

That's an itunes file. The noise starts at about 6:40. I've never heard her go this high! It's pretty creepy. So I wanted to share and see what everybody else thought.

Is there a voice instructor in the house? I *believe* that she's singing in, what is known as, whistle tone or whistle register. Commence blasting away at my stoopidity.

That's a soprano D, I think it's a funny kind of non-modal sustained "squeak", not quite falsetto but not quite whistle  Controlled enough for her to add vibrato it strangely.

That's a soprano D

That's the scariest thing I've heard come out of her mouth since "I'll be performing on the grammy's with Taylor Swift"

And just for the halibut, Ann Wilson hitting a soprano D in what could be her natural voice! (1:04)

I was seriously freaked out when I heard that sound the first time (and ever since actually). I thought maybe it was an effect or something, but it really does seem to come from Stevie.

She also scares the hell out of me with the Philadelphia show at 4:50 and especially at 5:07.

There's also a freakishly high pitched wail at 5:54 at the Providence show.

And for those that don't want to deal with m4a, here's the NYC Gold Dust Woman.

I think it really adds to the song. It's down right creepy and unnerving hearing a human making those kinds of painful, otherworldly sounds.

I love it...I can't even begin to imagine how she made that sound.

I love how haunting she can make that song

Dang man, no wonder people thought she was a witch. Loop some of these together and play it on Halloween... scare the crap out of all the little kiddies coming to the door for candy. ;)

In all the years I've been a fan, I have NEVER heard these before. Thank you for making my day. I never knew she had it in her. So, does that effectively give Stevie the same 8 octave range that Mariah Carey has?

I can just see all the stoned out fans in the audience with their eyes wide open and glassy, mouths agape watching Stevie as she shrills, standing at the mic, wraped in black velvet, eyes closed, head tilted back. How I wish time travel were possible.

I didn't know anyone could even make that sort of noise. I thought it was a guitar or something. Freaky. Thanks for sharing though, it's amazing what new things are dug up

You have no idea how much I wish I could have been one of those people!! I wonder what her reaction would be if she were to go back and listen to some of these earlier recordings.

That was amazing - I had to listen a few times to all of the posted downloads and when I started hearing it - it just blew me away - I'm not a musician or claim to have any sort of musical background but on wiki she is listed as a contralto which I think would apply here

Sorry to revive an old thread, but, I found this on youtube, and she does the freaky high-wailing thing here too -

Between 4:50 and 5:12, she has a few mini ones.
