View Full Version : Stevie - plataform Reeboks - movement?

Ok - as much of a SN fan that I am - I pale in comparison to this board and its members. Forgive me if this was discussed back during the day...
But can someone explain what shoes Stevie was wearing during the Say You Will tour? Were they platform Reeboks?!? For a woman who has such a distinctive style as her - I never could understand why she thought they looked good. Furthermore, they seemed much less stable than her platform boots that had been her trademark (well, one of them anyway).
Anyway - I ask this question along with how she moves on stage these days. It seems that up until say, maybe the mid 90s - she was a pretty free flowing/moving performer on stage. And all the lyrics about 'dancing' and the imagery of dancing in her videos... well, after that mid 90s period (and more specifically - during TISL & SYW) it just seemed like she was frozen in the hips area. I mean, clearly she still gets her groove on and it really doesn't detract (for me) from any stage show I've seen by her but it's just a 'difference' that I've noticed and have always wondered about. Could it have anything to do with rehab through the years?
I know it's a strange query and again, forgive me if you've all discussed this back in the day... but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks,
Cliff

Yes it's been discussed at length, but no harm no foul for your curiosity...
Those are obviously "corrective"/"orthopedic" shoes. My personal observations would be she wears them due to the years of abuse te platforms have caused, her hip issues, and possible arthritis.
They're ugly, but if she's got to, she's got to...
I'm officially old! I just bought myself a pair of Frankenboks last week, and they are not the "firm your butt" kind either! They are extremely comfortable, and seriously they look very close to hers. I wonder if I should wear them to tonight's show. Might be fun and in keeping with the current look. But, nah,....I still prefer dancing in my platform heels. I don't think the boks move with you that great. But someday I might be sportin' those as well:shrug:

Thanks CADreaming. I guess I never knew she had hip issues.

I've yet to see a "pretty" orthopedic shoe and who knew her shoes would rub off as a fashion statement to some. To me they are ugly. I'm not 60, but platform boots aren't THAT bad to wear really. The design itself better supports you if you're gonna wear heels.

I saw her once in 92 and she didn't move for about 90 minutes of the 95 minute performance.

I remember when Stevie first wore them at the beginning of The Other Side of The Mirror tour in 1989, when she had broken a toe or something on the lip of her swimming pool. I was SO glad she was healed and back to her BOOTS by the time she made it to Texas that October!!!! :)
They don't bother me now, since I understand how they help her comfort. However, in Dallas in 2003 & 2004, Stevie switched on and off between the sneakers and actual real STEVIE BOOTS on different songs.

Thanks CADreaming. I guess I never knew she had hip issues.
Yes, she has mentioned it. Also, at times she walks with a very noticeable gait, favoring one side.

I think the toll of wearing them for 30+ years, dancing onstage and maybe trotting from venue to limos to jets quickly is what has contributed to her not being able to wear them for long stretches anymore - not that the boots themselves aren't supportive enough. Plus, if her ankles swell or if she does have arthritis, all of that could factor in together...

If I remember correctly, she banged her foot against the bed in her hotel during the Pondering The Millennium mini tour and started wearing the Frankenboks then.
For me, at least, whenever she wore platforms, she was stiff starting at about the Enchanted tour (at least based on what I saw going to shows), but I always chalked it up to her getting older. When I saw her perform at the 2000 AHI benefit with the Frankenboks on, she moved around a LOT more than I expected, even throwing in like 20 twirls during "Rhiannon".
In the very early days of the Say You Will tour, she wore the platform boots at all times because the thought that she'd wear the Frankenboks did NOT go over well with fans. Then she switched at approximately the Buffalo show. My guess is the platforms hurt her feet too much. She'd still occasionally wear the boots during shows that otherwise predominantly had the Frankenboks.
I said it before and I'll say it again: I would rather see Stevie wearing the Frankenboks and moving around well on stage than see her wearing the platform boots and barely move an inch. At 62 years old, it's comfort over style in my opinion.

I know this has been beat to death, but couldn't she wear stockings or tights? IMO Stevie has gorgeous legs!! If she must wear the bungies does she have to pair them with the thick leather lizard whatevers covering her legs? I've never disliked something more.

I recall reading a review for one of her shows just before she switched to the "Frankenboots" and the review said that her twirling wasn't on display as much as it had been in the past, then said perhaps instead of "Stand Back", it should be called "Stand Still".
I've mentioned it here before, but it's all part of getting older, after years of wearing those platforms she probably has some seriously ugly feet these days. Also her hips are probably out of whack, so those horrible boots are what she has to wear now. If only it could be 1983 forever!!! ;P

When I saw her during the Enchanted tour in Cincinnati she changed wardrobe A LOT but one piece that sticks out was this black ankle length sparkly handkerchief skirt that was cut so pretty and she wore the red burgundy boots the entire show and was all over that stage the entire night. Not like some of her routinely rehearsed shows we get today. This show was like Stevie of old, complete with element of surprise. And as far as her now possibly having horrible looking feet from years of boots, from somewhat recent pics that were posted of her in sandals during a soundcheck, she had painted toes and her feet looked fine. If anything I think age is why she dislikes the boots anymore. It just makes a fan sad that after decades of her adoring the boots, she now views them as the devil : /

Honey, I don't care how gorgeous her legs are - at her age she is going to have spider veins. And, that ain't pretty...

I really couldn't care less what she chooses to wear on her feet, sadly for her I dont think she has much choice, orthopedics's or no live shows!! As we all know she only stands at 5'1, she's not going to walk on stage without high boots. I'm just so thankful she is making this new CD & touring again after her CD is released in March, fingers crossed she tours in Australia in 2011:D

I care about what she wears on her feet. I do. Call me superficial and horrible. Those sneaker things are awful. Better to just wear flat boots, the whole look sucks.

Misunderstood what you were saying. I was saying that if her legs were bare you would see veins. Sheer black, def not and I def agree - much better look!

I'll be that's why she wears the gloves. To hide her aging hands. I must admit I'm not a huge fan of them but I prefer the fingerless kind she's been wearing to the other motorcylce gloves she wore before.

I think it's good, sort of. On 'Unleashed'- the show I saw, she was in the platform boots and she looked like she was in pain, and she looked medicated. I believe in a performer wearing what they feel comfortable performing in, but the reality that there is attractive footwear that is comfortable hasn't yet occured to her. It's part of her hanging on to what worked 25 years ago, yet it's an improvement that she no longer feels it's necessary to pretend she's 5'7" by wearing boots that clearly would be painful for a gal in her 60s.
I lived in Reeboks- in the early 80s. She should check out Stacy Adams shoes (I believe there's a woman's line, too) or shoes made in Italy with the buttery, soft leather and silky laces that lace up past the ankle, they'd look great on her and compliment her billowy layers better than the combat boot-Reeboks.
I do think its a good thing she can be comfortable and perhaps really get into her singing, again. Like she said during 'Unleashed'- her feet were hurting so bad she couldn't concentrate on her singing. At this stage, so late in her career, she needs to deliver killer vocals more than wear platform boots. Lower the dress hems to the floor and hide the shoes, if they have to be ugly.
I think ditching the ridiculously high platform boots is the professional thing to do, to be able to perform in comfort and sing at her best, which she needs to do to keep continuing with concerts.
Now, if she'd hire a stylist, imagine all the free shoes she could try out til she finds something comfortable and good looking!

My plan right now is to slide into 60 in piece feeling beautiful and pray to God healthy. I still feel and look young. However my joints and FEET are kiiling me. So I can relate. Stevie is still my love and looks so beautiful, so let's slide into 70 in one piece woooooh00000000................You cannot imagine what this journey is like until you are here. :blob1:

I guess word got back that the fans didn't like the boots, after all she did nickname one of her tours "The Boots Are Back" didn't she? She should just wear comfortable flats, those shoes really do look ridiculous on her.

Maybe she should have nicknamed this mini-tour as 'The Boots Were Back, but Now They Are Gone Again'

C'mon Caper, we'll get into the "hundred club" with a litte luck!! Even so, not one of us like this aging sh*t and all that comes with it, little by little ~ there's no chance that any of us are gettin' out of here alive anyway! Enjoy those years before 40 everyone and then hang on while your walls crumble ... and all your goodies start saggin' ... you think Stevie prefers to show up in those shoes? Imagine her feelings on that sh*t ... jus' sayin' -- here's thanks to the singing goddess that Stevie is still feelin' it ... and that we can all rock out some more ... and you can bet she's got some helpers of some organic or whatever sort to get through those shows  So be it.

If I could, I'd mail Stevie a pair of boots from one of my favorite brands - Sofft. I have a pair of buttery soft black leather, knee high, lace-up-the-back high-heeled boots that are so comfortable, it's like being barefoot or wearing slippers.
Sofft for the freakin' WIN, y'all. I pretty much live in heels, and it IS possible to get comfortable ones that are also attractive. The odds of being able to do so go up considerably when you have money to throw around like Stevie would, too, so...I don't get the Frankenbok thing.
Unless there's another reason she has to wear those particular shoes that we haven't thought of?
When all is said and done, though, I'd much rather have Stevie comfy and happy on stage than in pain, even if the Frankenboks are a big ol' "oh, honey...no."
