View Full Version : Songs You Can Listen to 700 Times in a Row

I might be the only person that does this, but I somehow doubt it. I have a habit of occasionally latching onto a song and listening to it about 700 times in a row. Eventually, I will switch it up, and I don't do that ALL the time, but since I'm doing it currently with a Nick Cave song, I thought it might make a fun thread topic.

Here's the current song: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, "Come Into My Sleep" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU7WLuy9V18&feature=related)

Some others I do this with:

The Cult - "Fire Woman" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNcpasj__WY) - I am totally driven to flail around like a spazzy wombat to this song every time I hear it, which is, as you can imagine, something of an inconvenience. If I ever come visit you, please do not play this song or some of your valuables might get broken. Seriously. I just had to get up and do it because I had to pull up the song on YouTube for linking purposes.

Sisters of Mercy - "Flood II" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn_GCGJCxo8) - If Doktor Avalanche wasn't a drum machine, I would totally marry him. Also, he gives great advice (http://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/misc/deardok.htm). Move the hell over, Dear Abby - the Doktor is IN (and probably judging me for making terrible jokes).

Mick Harvey (former Bad Seed) - "Out of Time Man" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YMZuQbX8ko)

Moloko - "Forever More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD99OQ2SiQc)" - I LOVE this song. Not only does it have a great beat and you can dance to it, but the video is fun as hell. Love the choreography. And Roisin Murphy is adorable.

David Bowie - "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWX_MFNOL_Y)

TV on the Radio - "Wolf Like Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03hC_Ml8aAM) - y dis song so gud, tv on radio?

Fields of the Nephilim - "For Her Light" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2-gntRcAQ) - Goth cowboys FTW

Mission UK - "Deliverance" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvna9LYvzm0)

Devin Townsend - "Bad Devil" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rokLH-YRZ1g) - I don't know what a "bad double-decker devil" is, but it's gotta be awesome, because Devy is never not awesome.

There are a lot more, because I clearly have too much time on my hands, but that's probably enough for now.

Whatcha got for me?

Thanks, guys! I might be a dork (HAH - might?), but it's really cool to see how different everyone's lists are from each other's and how they're the same, too. Also neat to see how genres vary wildly in individual lists.

tilthefirefades - have you ever heard the Krikor Edit of "Goodbye Horses"? It's REALLY good, and another one of those songs where when I hear it, I can't NOT get up and dance around. Except instead of spazzy wombat, I'm all "Oh! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjOLER8XqQc)" (link NSFW)

I know in an earlier post I mentioned these 2 songs, but really for me, Vincent and Castles In The Air by Don McLean are 2 of the greatest pieces of rock and roll poetry that I have ever heard. I am not a fan of American Pie at all, but the other 2 I can literally listen to 1000 times in a row and NEVER get tired of hearing Don's singing!

Yeah, I'm not too hip with the version on the first Little Feat album, but the version they did on Sailin' Shoes is the version Linda pretty much copied verbatim.

So glad you liked it! I said it before in this thread, but I really love the way Tori does covers (though, oddly, I can't usually get into her versions of "Landslide," for some reason, but given all the previous sh*t covers of "Edge," I'd be really curious to hear what Miss T came up with for it. ). She has a real knack for being able to make them her own and make them amazing while still holding the original in high regard.

So much so that I can actually put several Tori covers on the list of things I can listen to forever:

Tori doing "Desperado (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh4rg9kOO40)." If I died while listening to that, the only thing I'd regret is that I'd never get to listen to it again. No joke.

Her absolutely gorgeous cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xdhwXIzFKY) of Tom Waits' "Time." Waits is so...Waits, it's really difficult to do a song of his justice, but Tori does it very well. That particular version is extremely moving, coming as it did on Letterman's first day back after 9/11.

Her cover of Led Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRg8UGQGXUE) - OMFG is all I can ever say about that one. It is teh sex. Also, seriously, how cute is she? "Ho-lee, ho-lee, HO-LEEEE." You can hear a bit of "Thank You" at the end, but she also has an equally amazing full version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nunxgGQpSQ) of "Thank You," too. Beautiful.

And, of course, can't forget her cover of Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozt1Uf-UBPc)." That always cracks me up, because when you listen to Britney do it, it's a mediocre pop song, but when Tori does it, it's somehow turned into a meditation on domestic violence... (For those unfamiliar with Tori, the Tash she refers to in the little monologue at the beginning is her young daughter).

I could go on. I heart Miss T so hard.

700 times in a row and not get tired, alright it's worth a shot. http://www.blondieforum.com/images/smilies/hmmmm.gif I've pretty much already listened to these 700 times anyways. I'll only list a few for each cause I'll be rambling sh*t off all day.

Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child, Loco Mosquito, Fire Girl, Funtime, The Passenger

Deborah Harry - Sweet & Low (there's a lovely video for this that I've watched about 700 times as well in my lifetime.:cool:), I Can See Clearly, Two Times Blue, The Fugitive

Heart - Sleep Alone, Bebe Le Strange, Safronia's Mark, What About Love, These Dreams, Wheels

Ramones - Life Goes On, Bop Til You Drop, Garden Of Serenity, Do You Remember Rock N Roll Radio?

Blondie - Maria (also another video with probably 700 watches ), Forgive & Forget, Golden Rod, Angels On The Balcony, Heart Of Glass, What I Heard, D-Day

The Gun Club - Nobody's City, Carry Home, Sex Beat

Fleetwood Mac - No Questions Asked, Temporary One, Eyes Of The World (Live in Boston version), Gypsy, The Chain

Stevie Nicks - I Can't Wait, Rooms On Fire, The Nightmare, No Spoken Word, Fall From Grace

R.E.M. - Country Feedback. One of my absolute favourite R.E.M. songs, especially the Perfect Square version. Although the lyrics take a lot to be deciphered, and considering how cryptic Michael is with his wordplay, once you pull a meaning out of the "randomness" for yourself, something special happens. At least with me anyway. The honeyed words pouring from his lips tell of all manner of personal frustrations I have been through, yet at the same time fill me with confidence that things are still there to be strived for. Peter Buck's awe inspiring guitar riff (reduced me to tears the first time I heard it) adds a delicious note to the song that takes me breath away each time. I can't help but sink into a personal reverie when I listen.

Racing Cars - They Shoot Horses, Don't They This has to be amongst my all time greats. It's one of those songs that you can't help but sing along to, and then suddenly realise through your own "mockery" how much there is to relate to. There's a definitive note of finality in the song, but at the same time the "protagonist" (for lack of a better word) has made the decision to see whatever will happen through. It's all gone wrong, but it would be a waste not to see it to its conclusion.

Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs Okay. It's an obvious choice for me. But specifically, The Dance version is the one that inspires me the most. The lyrics are simple, yet beautiful. But it's the pace of the song that works to inspire me the most. from humble and seemingly resigned beginnings, the song gathers pace as though it's a Flower springing to life until it bursts into blossom with a beautiful crescendo triggered by full band participation. After a few awe inspiring moments of beauty whilst gazing at the flower painted with colours drawn from the beautifully scarred emotions being conveyed, it slips back into its bud and sinks into the ground again, leaving the audience yearning for another peek at the display.

Sarah McLachlan - Angels Somewhat of a cliche, I know. But the song was the first to tempt me towards Sarah and help guide me through my awkward teenage years. At my lowest ebb I could always listen to the song and picture in vivid detail my own fate should I let my abundant problems get the better of me. Thus helping me fight against an ending I refused to allow, no matter how much I longed for it in some moments.

For me, the song that gets me through times like that is True Colors by Cyndi Lauper, & I could never get sick of it!!

Right now, I've been listening to Black on Black II by Heart, and Frozen Love by Buckingham Nicks repeatedly !!

Without A Leg To Stand On is my repeated Buckingham Nicks song. I especially love the line "Nobody wants to keep you when you're in love with the game". The way Bucky sinks his teeth into that like is absolutely delicious.

A few more to add on to the original list!

"Tongue" - R. E.M. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd5M17e7Wek) - Currently my favorite R.E.M. song and usually is pretty high on the list.
"Benson Hedges" - fun. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNnL1rB9NI) - This song is brilliant and irresistible, hence why i listen to it all the freaking time.
"Been There Before" - Hanson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMk7oXWR_U0) - A song that sums up not only what I love about this band, but pretty much what I love about music in general.
"Rockin' Robin" - Michael Jackson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2vzTKh-O5c) - Just never, ever gets old.

I love my mother and owe her the world and I'm very fortunate she's always been there for all of us. But that song up there to me is so lyrically sad and one of my favorites.

I still LOVE "You Get What You Give" and spin that album quite a bit. Also love Hanson's "Lost Without Each Other" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z6HP7fvbkI), which was co-written by Gregg.

I'm currently listening to this song 700 times a day... it's disgusting. It reminds me so much of what Fleetwood Mac would have sounded like had they dabbled in electronica:

I'm stuck on three Grinderman songs lately:

"Bellringer Blues" - this song has SUCH a great groove to it. And the lyrics are fantastic.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1km7-SEFWP4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1km7-SEFWP4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

"...and we care a little bit,
and we get scared a little bit,
of those two cold dead eyes
that stare a little bit.
And we cry a little bit,
and we get by a little bit.
Let your tears
all come falling down.
We are the sole survivors, the sole survivors..."

"Kitchenette"
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8RrC1WCU8J4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8RrC1WCU8J4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
"...but if you wanna get your hand out of the cookie jar, you're gonna have to let go of the biscuit." Wonderfully neurotic song. Oh Nick.

"When My Baby Comes"
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wIgLDLHiYUs?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wIgLDLHiYUs?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
"Hey, hey, listen - don't do that on the carpet." Warren's violin in this one is fantastic, and I love the transition from Nick's poetry to the rest of the band rocking out.

Really, the whole new album, Grinderman 2, is f*ckin' UH-MAY-ZING, but I can't stop listening to these three.

Besides "Landslide" this is the other song I can listen to a million zillion times and always still love and never grow out of....

And a neat music video!

M. Ward - Chinese Translation (from the album Post-War)

Such simple yet profound songwriting...

I sailed a wild, wild sea,
Climbed up a tall, tall mountain,
I met an old, old man beneath a weeping willow tree,
He said "Now if you've got some questions, go and lay them at my feet,
But my time here is brief, so you'll have to pick just three"

And I said...

"What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?

And how can a man like me remain in the light?

And if life is really as short as they say

...then why is the night so long?"

Soooo many songs to pick from. Hmmmmm...one that comes to mind is "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
