View Full Version : Do I detect a hidden message in The Chain?

I bet you guys have already heard this one before, but I heard once (both in writing and for myself) that, at the beginning of The Chain, you can hear a thud and someone whispering "F**k" right before the song begins. Now since this is true, I have a few lingering question. What had happened? Who was the person responsible for dropping the F-bomb?

I don't remember what the reason was, but it's Lindsey swearing.

It was part of his genius. Up there with the microphones on the bathroom floor and the breaking of the glass in the rain.

That's what I meant, the f-bomb being dropped. I didn't quite mean it as a "hidden message" like "Turn me on dead man" from the White Album, I just meant it seemed hidden cause you never quite think about it.

So, it was Lindsey swearing. I thought the voice sounded a bit deep and that it was a techie (hell, one was responsible for the random knocking door in Beat It cause he didn't realize they were recording), but then again, I could see him doing it.

Thanks guys!

Recording snafu. Ha. Stevie's dropped it several times during demos. My fav is the LAL demo when she's trying to chord the guitar.

OK, I'm assuming you know the story of the "Paul is dead" hoax, but this was one bit of it. If you have the White Album on vinyl, go to Revolution 9, and during the part when the guy is saying "Number 9, number 9, number 9..." in the beginning, hand-turn the record backwards and you'll hear it.

Another hidden message I know of (but never heard) on the Motley Crue song Shout at the Devil, where Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx try and chant "Jesus is Satan" as an underdub. Has anyone evr heard that one?

Mine's an 80's JVC ghetto blaster  It does 45 and 33 1/2 and that's it. It's fully automated too, so even if I didn't press start, as soon as I lifted the arm to put it on the record to manually turn it backwards, it would start turning forwards and there'd be nothing I could do to stop it :(

OK, maybe try playing The Chain or Dreams at 45 RPM. There's nothing there, jut a good laugh at their chipmunk voices.

Things get recorded during a session that are usually edited out. Somebody decided to keep this one, apparently, on the master tapes. But you couldn't hear it until Rumours was remastered.

There's another spot on the album where something that wasn't meant to be part of the track was kept for aesthetic reasons: Christine's musical signal to the control room on "Oh Daddy." She briefly staccatos her Fender Rhodes at the end, effectively telling the engineers "OK, we're done." But the band liked the effect of it, so they kept it on the track.

Rolling Stone noted a similar thing in its Mirage review: Lindsey yells YEAH or something during "Empire State."

I took from my dad a vinyl copy of Rumours he purchased in 1977, and even though it's grainy and I did it with the volume at max and my ear to the speaker, I certainly heard it. The CD helped me verify it.

As for other FM snafus, I recall hearing Bucky say "Yah" or something during part of Monday Morning.

Well it's not something that was intentional. I mean the guy is saying Number 9. There's no hidden message in that. People used to play stuff backwards looking for clues and they probably thought "Hey that sounds like...." and so now if that's what you're trying to hear then you can make yourself hear it, but it's not like someone's speaking it clearly or anything. It's a mumble. Anything that's there is a coincidence and is not a "message". I'm sure you can look it up on youtube and find clips of it played backwards.

ButterCookie

I'll put it in audacity and play it backwards when I can be bothered.

I know that Deborah Harry's track Jen Jen has her speaking when played backwards intentionally.

Were the car horns in Sugar Daddy intentional? I also remember someone saying that there was a phone ringing at the end of Honey Hi, but I haven't heard it.

I think I'm getting too deep, but I thought I heard someone snorting something (I wonder what it was lol) at the beginning of Tusk, right after somebody says "How'd you get it, Johnny?" I think I might have heard a barking dog somewhere, but I might be mixing songs up.

Going OT, but another snafu you hear in a lot of Led Zeppelin tunes is the sound of Bonzo's bass drum pedal squeaking throughout. And I dunno how to describe it, but, even though I dislike the Doors greatly (I do have a few tunes of theirs I like though0, I think someone says "It's comin' atcha" right before the music starts on Hello I Love You.

Plus if you listen to Go Your Own Way backwards Lindsey says somewhere "I Faked It" and on Rhiannon Stevie says something about "but somehow had to leave/live".

Probably just the mind and ears playing tricks but interesting nonetheless... :)

I'd forgotton the Nazi one...

I can't remember the one I found of Stevie's that when played backwards she says something about (and I'm trying to recall this from 10-12 years ago when we were discussing this on the old newsgroup) "we do Skippy, you can go right now". Which of course makes absolutely no sense.

I have Rumours on vinyl, so now I gotta try that one, but I have a slight roadblock with the Rhianon one: I don't own the White Album on vinyl, and my parents aren't exactly keen on me going to record shops and buying used records.

Aren'tthere some backmasked messages about going out and buying album?

Try 'Never Going Back Again' backwards. I once had a cassette that I had recorded some songs on and it got twisted and played backwards. I'm unsure what part of the song it is. To me it sounds like LB says 'Sorry but I hate you Stevie. May be the reason why it aint working'.

There is also a weirdie noise at the beginning of "Isn't It Midnight" on my 4CD Chain box set. I can't tell who it is, but it's someone making a dorky "Nnnnnyahhh!" sound.

It's reasonable to think the car horn in Sugar Daddy is intentional, given that it appears right after Christine sings "You can pick me up in a big fancy car." I aways thought that was a nice quirky touch.

It was stupidly worded, but it's hidden in that it's something you don't quite pay attention, and wasn't quite audible when the album first came out.
