View Full Version : What is your favourite Mick Fleetwood solo album?

Ok so Mick Fleetwood doesn't get a lot of recognition for his solo work despite the obvious talent that the albums contain. Mick does have a great knack of bringing together talented musicians, something that he has demonstrated in that other band called Fleetwood Mac.
Sure the MFBB is perhaps the best known of Mick's bands and I'll almost put money on it getting the most votes, but hopefully some of the old albums get a few votes too! Oh yes and I know that officially The Zoo and MFBB are bands and not solo albums but humour me here...
Personally I find this quite a hard question to answer (stupid of me to ask the question then isn't it?) but I'll give my vote to I'm Not Me...

It is...I was really torn between I'm Not Me, Something Big and Blue Again. It is almost like choosing a favourite child...
I was actually surprised when I first heard Something Big - I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was...

I haven't played it in a VERY VERY long time, but I know I remember Ms. Evans' background vocals were simple and stellar!

No contest for me. The Visitor is gorgeous. I dream that the Mac had joined Mick in Africa for their follow-up to Tusk. It would have changed the trajectory of the band's history and, I believe, music history. All I want in life is "Edge of Seventeen" with an African choir.

Anyone notice how the sax line of the song "State Of The Art" was stolen by Christine for the melody of "Little Lies"?? HMMMMM??? Hands??? Anyone??? Bueller??

Where can we hear the first three albums on this poll? I'm especially interested in The Visitor. I haven't heard any of the first three, and don't know if they are out of print, or if they were even ever released to CD.

All three of them are out of print as far as I am aware - Shakin' the cage was the only one to officially make it to CD that I know of, although that too is now out of print I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this...

The Visitor was released on CD but it is VERY difficult to find actual copies. There are a lot of bootleg versions. On the other hand, I have NEVER come across a copy of I'm Not Me on CD which leads me to believe that they never printed the album on that format, or they are very, very rare to find.

The copy of I'm Not Me that I managed to buy on CD was from the same guy who was selling the back catalogue of Billy Burnette on CD (and also Head West if I remember rightly), they were obviously home-made copies but very well done although damn expensive...
It cost me about A$200 for six Billy albums but you can't complain when you finally get to hold such things in your hand...
Actually don't think I even own a copy of the Visitor (other than in mp3 format) I used to have it on vinyl for many years but as I have no way of playing the vinyl it kicked around about 15 years until it was damaged and I threw it away...

Me too, Matt.
While I really enjoy about half of The Visitor(some of the african choir stuff, is too far out there for me to really appreciate), I'm Not Me is a more solid effort. I dislike the sax parts on INM, though. They make it sound very dated.
On The Visitor though, I MUCH prefer the version of Walk A Thin Line, to Lindsey's!

What's frustrating is that it's the only album that hasn't been released on CD. I have a French BMG Music issued CD of The Vistor.

What a shock!!! A Mick related thread in the "Rumours" area!!!! I'd almost given up that any discussion on this forum would ever include the "Tall Man".
Anyway, here's my votes, in order of preference:
Blue Again
The Visitor
Something Big
Shakin' The Cage
I'm Not Me
Never heard anything form the Total Drumming stuff.
As a drummer, Mick has to surround himself with other musicians. It's very difficult to just do a drum album. Even Micky Hart from Grateful Dead on his Planet Drum stuff has had to surround himself with other percussionists. So, no surprise that Mick has a slew of other musicians around him when he records. And why shouldn't he go for the best? I'd be shocked to hear of a musician that wouldn't want to work with him.

Probably because it is the one that actually sounds the most like a Rumours era Fleetwood Mac album....each song sounds similar to your typical song by a member of the Rumours era...Mick probably could've gotten them to do the lead vocal on each track and nobody would've known the difference:
Angel Come Home (Lindsey)
You Might Need Somebody (Christine)
Tonight (Stevie)
I Want You Back (Lindsey)
I'm Not Me (Christine)
State Of The Art (Lindsey)
Tear It Up (all)
This Love (Stevie)
I Give (Christine)
Just Because (Lindsey/Christine)
Put Me Right (Stevie)

So, I just don't get why there has to be a comparison to Rumours. As Lindsey has said many, many, many times, why make a carbon copy of that album? They did that, now let's do something different. Thus, Tusk.
Why wouldn't Mick want to do albums that are nonRumours sounding? We can all pretty much guess what a Lindsey album is going to sound like, the same with Stevie and Christine as well. With Mick and John, being rhythm players, not singers or "front men", they need bands and singers to work with. We got a very small taste of how John works with other musicians on his "Gotta Band" project and now we've had various versions of what Mick is into with his several projects.
Can't they all just be appreciated for what they are and not compared to Rumours????
I'm actually pretty shocked (and then again not so much owing to the lack of blues love on this forum, no offense, just a fact) that Blue Again hasn't gotten more votes. It's a fantastic CD and a real tribute to the PG/original era of FM that really pours out the love for the music that the MFBB has.

chili said "Rumours-era," which means it's the one that sounds most like it could have been made by those 5 people; not necessarily similar Rumours itself.
p.s. -- I'm listening to I'm Not Me right now and chili is uncannily (though not surprisingly) right in his "casting" of the Rumours-era mac members for each song. WOW.

Thanks for this Viv, I was checking this against our discography listings for accuracy and I couldn't find Gilbert Amartey Amar or Edikanfo.
There is a Nii Amartey so assuming this is him, he wrote "O' Niamali" & "Amelle (Come On Show Me Your Heart)" but for the musicians it just says Played & Sung by Adjo Group (i.e. no mention of Edikanfo).
I must admit I know nothing about these groups so if anyone can clarify any of this it'd be most appreciated as I wasn't able to find the names of any of the members of Adjo Group either so...

Well, the article actually said he played with Fleetwood Mac but I changed it to Mick Fleetwood because I'd never heard of the band playing with an African Musician in the early 1980's. I hope this helps.

I'm shocked too...I don't think it is necessarily a reflection on Blue Again...it is just that those old albums have so much to offer (and hey they are original too ). We are a nostalgic bunch!

Very true my friend. Very true. Nostalgia? Yes. But for what? For Mick and his work, or for anything that can be compared to Buckingham/Nicks and Rumours?
I guess I'm just looking for something I'm not going to find in this area of the forum: Love for a tribute to the PG era of FM.

The Visitor is Mick Fleetwood's finest moment within his solo work. With George Harrison and Peter Green adding their magic, not to mention Mick working in Ghana (West Africa) before Paul Simon (South Africa) made it hip.

You could argue that the Visitor gave a nod to that era, it even had PG appear on the album - what more could you ask for?
While the comparisons can probably be made between Mick's solo work and the BN era, I doubt that is not why most people enjoy it. If Miss Witchy Nicks appeared on the album then it would probably be a hell of a lot more popular than it currently is...
Oh ok I'll make up a poll about Blue Again if it makes you happy...
Don't feel too bad though, even the Splinter Group didn't get enough love when they did the old PG songs, so Rick Vito is hardly likely to get it...

Well, if you REALLY want to get picky about which rockers set the standard of recording with African musicians, Cream's drummer Ginger Baker was really the pioneer. Recorded with many African musicians as early as '70. He even built his own recording studio in Lagos, Nigeria in '71(where Paul McCartney recorded his Band On The Run album in 1974)
If you're into Mick's The Visitor, check out the DVD Ginger Baker In Africa.

After you downloaded them, did you "extract" them (via WinZip or similar application)? ".rar" are compressed files that expand into .mp3 files when extracted.

Went back & revisited The Visitor album last night. It's a damned great album!! Still, though, I prefer I'm Not Me, but the gap between them is a whole lot narrower this morning.
The track "Super Brains" (or "Superbrains" as it was listed on the original album cover) sounds as if it could've been on one of Peter Green's PVK label albums (In The Skies. Little Dreamer, etc).
I really like George Hawkins' vocals...both on The Visitor & I'm Not Me. Need to revisit his own album again soon.
