So I had a my camera and my voice recorder and when the band came on I pressed record. My seats were crap due to Ticketmaster's false seating chart. I was in Section A3 in the first row which is the first section on the left side of the stage on the floor. However instead of going straight uop and down (like it showed on the seating chart) my section was on a digaoonal slant so my view was mainly of sound equipment and these hanging wires that hold the speakers up. About 40 mins into the show this guy in a suit sits down besides me and starts saying he has been watching me all night taping the show and that the Band Owns the music and that three are Copyright Laws etc. Then he tells me to turn it off and then give him the battery. He also said he was going to watch me erase what I had taped but when I gave him the battery he left me alone. Thankfully the battery for my voice recorder was the original one which was some cheap inport. I must say he really read me the riot act and made me feel like crap. I was scared I was going to be arrested and am still a little nervous that someone might come to Ottawa and bang on door or something. I am not a seller of bootlegs and I also don't get what the big deal is about taping. It is just music and these guys have so much money it is not not like they need anymore. I spent around 400 all total for my concert experience and I was very disapointed. The sound at the Rogers Center is crap as the echos made it hard to hear them talk or sing. Thankfully over on the Melissa Etheridge Forum she realized all of the great free promotion she was getting from those audio and video clips on Youtube. At least there we are not made to feel like common criminals.

That just sounds stupid. Then again, they sued the American Eagle Foundation over copyright infringement or something stupid like.
As for the concert itsel,f what was it like?

Playing devil's advocate here:
Whether you understand or agree with what happened is irrelevant. It's common knowledge that recording a concert is an infringement of copyright law. You paid to attend the show, not take it home with you to listen to again and again or trade or sell to other fans.
You went in there knowing that what you were doing wasn't allowed and you got caught.

As said before any performances "Cameras and Recorders are Prohibited"
Sorry Matt.
A lousy voice recorder.I can see if it was a big reel to reel recorder.
Will I can see why Stevie can't stand the internet because of all the freeloaders stealing all of her works including her unrecorded demos.yes infringement of copyright law I agree,Also How did this guy know that you were recording the show, also how did he know you had a recorder on hand.also did he take the camera batteries too. When I was at Stevie's 2007-2008 CV tour ,I've seen about 6 cameras get confiscated by security at different shows,a couple of cameras got return to the fans about 15 minutes later, I had mine going but they did not bother me with mine because I had my flash "beacon" shut down.anyway how was the concert anyway.

Agree. I always find it amusing when concert goers complain about being busted for photography and video when it's clearly prohibited....like they are a victim. It's just plain ILLEGAL unless expressly permitted. If you can get away with it...fine....but otherwise don't complain.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Every time I read the thread title though, I keep thinking it's about the Eagles doing a terrible concert.

It was the Eagles and Dixie Chicks Concert. I know taping is not allowed but why I was so ticked off was that there were a slew of people filimg video and they have posted it online. It was like they were picking on me but ignoring all the others around me. I also have never attempted to tape anything till recently when I got my voice recorder. Having said that I have never sold nor intend to sell bootlegs of concrerts. I also don't understand why the band is so against it? Pearl Jam gives you a download of each concert on their tours and Melissa Etheridge has stopped her tour people from bugging us anymore as she realized the free publicity she was getting from video and pics being posted online.
The other problem I had was that I paid 225.00 and couldn't see or hear anything as my seats were obstructed view (Which was not what the seating chart reflected) and the sound was so bad. I have since been told that most concerts held here are crap beacause the sound is notoriously bad.

You are not alone in being disappointed in the price you paid for your seat, and what you thought you would be getting. At the same time, as you stated, most concerts held there are "crap" because the sound is notoriously bad.
As to why some bands allow cameras/photo taking/audio taping, etc and others don't--well, if you know Henley, you already know his position. He's been known to throw a maracca at an audience member and bean them on the head for that kind of behavior, or stop the show and holler at them. He doesn't stop to say, "um, are you planning on selling this stuff that you agreed not to do when purchasing a ticket to my show?" It's irrelevant. You could just NOT go to his shows, and go to ones that are more liberal and current with your philosophy on music and shows.
The comments that you made that I highlighted remind me of this story:
A man was speeding down a Alabama highway, feeling secure in a gaggle of cars all traveling at the same speed. However, as they passed a speed trap, he got nailed with an infrared speed detector and was pulled over.
The officer handed him the citation, received his signature and was about to walk away when the man asked, "Officer, I know I was speeding, but I don't think it's fair - there were plenty of other cars around me who were going just as fast, so why did I get the ticket?"
"Ever go a fishin'?" the policeman suddenly asked the man.
"Ummm, yeah..." the startled man replied.
The officer grinned and added, "Did you ever catch 'em all?"
Again, yeah, it sucks to be you, but you are not alone. As Henley sings, "Get over it." That would be his response. Do you know that song?

That's a shame about your concert. The only really bad experience that I've had at a show was @ Rams Head Live in Baltimore. I've never gone back there. My husband & I went there to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd, & security was really cracking down on cameras. I've never been to a Kenny Wayne Shepherd concert where you couldn't take a picture, so it had to be the venue. This one, big security guard went & stood in front of the stage the whole time & just about draped himself over this poor young guy near him. He just kept watching the crowd & threatening people with cameras the whole time, me included. Other security people were standing around the outer parts of the crowd just watching. If they saw a flash, they started looking around to find that person. I still got some shots off though. And at the very end of the show, & I mean it was the end, I took a picture. And you know that security guard at the stage came up to me & said, "Don't do that". Well, I already had done it! I'll never go back to that place; I don't care who plays there that I like. It was that bad.
Lee

No, but you got caught & they didn't. Fair? No. But that's life. I've had the same thing happen to me, it's not a big deal. Be glad you weren't thrown out or they didn't take your camera, because they could have.
