View Full Version : anyone know about Tinnitus?

I woke up around 4am this morning and noticed a high pitched, constant tone in my right ear. It's masked if I'm out and about or talking to people. I only hear it when it's quiet (or if I stick my finger in my ear.) What's odd is that it's only in the right ear.

Sounds like you got Shane on the brain.

I don't know if I would call this tinnitus.. at least in the sense of an elevated degradation of hearing disproportionate to one's age. I think its pretty common to hear that type of sound in complete silence- especially if you focus on it in the middle of the night. If its apparent when you're in conversation or in another activity with consistent background noise, it may be tinnitus, or something like it.

Does your ear otherwise hurt at all? Perhaps its infected.

I've noticed myself that, every so often (once a month?), at a seemingly random time, I'll hear an annoying high-pitched sound in one or both of my ears. I've never bothered to find out if this is normal/common, but I personally don't think your problem is anything to worry about yet - if it becomes increasingly regular and/or starts to cause pain, however, then definitely see a doctor about it.
(Sorry I can't be much more helpful...)

Doesn't hurt. I flush my ears out once or twice a week with an ear cleaning solution (i'm paranoid about ear wax). And the noise is still in my ear. So going on 12 hours now I've had this ringing.

LittleD, does that ear face your guitar amp more of the time when playing?

i have had tinnitus as long as i can remember. i don't know what caused it.

in your case i would suspect it's noise induced, since you play electric geetar. unless you take one of the hundreds of medications whose side effects include tinnitus.

Nah I don't take any meds. A female co-worker said "You're like every other male... you don't wanna go to the doctor"...

Playing guitar probably has something to do with it. Bob Seger spoke about ears ringing from amps in Turn the Page, so that might be the culprit. Either way, I personally think it'd be a good idea to see a doctor about this.

Did she also note the fact that men are usually good at telling other men to see doctors, even though they wouldn't themselves if advised to? (As is the case for you and I.)
Seriously, though, if this hasn't gone away yet, it might not for a very long time. I implore you to see a doctor.

I had it pretty bad about 3 years ago, same thing. The same ringing sound in my right ear and it was beyond annoying. I went to a couple of dr.'s and they didn't do **** so I wouldn't even waste your time. Mine went away on it's own after about 3 months. I do think it was from my loud music-listening habits in retrospect. It comes back from time to time in that same right ear but doesn't last as long. There is something you can get at a health food store that is specifically made to treat tinnitus. I haven't tried it but I don't think it would hurt.

Is that your guitar amp ear? I always keep mine to the right of me, and can TELL that my hearing is different/worse in my right ear. I figure I'm saving my left ear, this way!

I have a problem with background noise. Like hearing a conversation over a loud DJ, in a club. I'm average height, but it seems like all my friends are short, so I feel like I'm hunched over all night, trying to hear what they're saying. The human question mark! (I used to play with a guitar player that had terrible posture, and we called him the human question mark - behind his back, of course!)

It's called "Ring Stop" available at vitamin shops.

I've got it too. Some times my ears are roaring, especially if I'm subjected to police, fire sirens, or construction noise during the day. Other times I wake up and my hearing is clear. The bad news is it's not curable at this time.

The even badder news is some people, in extreme cases, have been driven to suicide to escape the constant noise.

Went to the doctor. Guess what he told me GUESS what he told me...

Anyway... ear canals clean... ear drum looks okay. Might be excessive use of the iPod  He wasn't sure unless they do an MRI.

Then again I only listen to it when I walk to school and walk home (total 1 hr per day)... and I dont listen to it that loud... like you know you can sometimes hear people walking by you with headphones on and still make out the song? Yeah that's not me.

Hah! Brandon doesn't love me anymore : / but I hope you get better soon Brandon. I never could wear headphones or anything like that that close to my ears, the ringing drives me nuts afterwards. I must have sensitive ears I guess.

Yeah, after 40+ years of standing in front of amps, drummer's CRASH CYMBALS (worst culprit!!! Followed closely by a harmonica player playing through either the PA or an amp), monitor speakers, stereo systems, headphones, iPod ear buds, etc...I hear Niagrall Falls 24/7. Hearing a human voice with any kind of constant background din (ambient conversations in a restaurant, Muzak, water running in a sink, A/C fan, whatever) is extremely difficult. My most often uttered words? Either "What?" or "Huh?". Not only annoying to ME, but annoying to the person talking to me, too. And, trying to hear the TV from across the room? Huh, uh...have to turn it up...which causes a bunch of grief for those living with me..."do you HAVE to have the TV so loud?"....yes, yes I do. (which really hampers the late night TV watching experience)

In a similar fashion of Brian Wilson urging us in 1971 to "take good care of your feet"...I'm urging you all to "take care of your hearing". Limit headphone/ear bud use (at any volume...the SPL---sound pressure level--- from those is about 10x's that of hearing out of a speaker across the room, even at half the volume).

tinnitus, mainly due to other health issues. I can hear fine, as long as there is not much background noise.

The most annoying thing is...I keep hearing the intro tape from Fleetwood Mac concerts (the crickets chirping), damn you FM!!!

Nothing Compares 2 U!! LOVE that song. It's so moving, and the video is just incredible. That sustained close-up... This song is the rarest of beasts, one where the cover is much better than the original.

Anyway, on a more serious note I hope things are a bit better for you. I haven't had this problem but my dad did for quite some time. Like others have said in this thread, it went away of its own accord after a week but he did have to wear ear protectors at his work (a garage) for a while...]#

Anyway, you'd better try to have fun, no matter what you do...

I know a lot of people who SWEAR by "Lipoflavonoid Plus" - not sure if you can get it in NZ, you could probably get a similar response from a high dose of Vitamin C though....

(I enjoyed the Sinead reference- but me, in my oldschoolness, consider it a Prince reference! ha!)
