Mick Fleetwood: the big picture
http://www.mauinews.com/photos/news/md/530770_1.jpg
By JON WOODHOUSE, Contributing Writer POSTED: April 22, 2010
Beginning in the early days of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood would often snap pictures of his band mates. Over the years this hobby morphed into a more serious artistic endeavor. Two years ago his photographic work was included in American Photo magazine's "Photography Rocks" traveling exhibition, along with images by musician like Bryan Adams, Lenny Kravitz, Lou Reed and Graham Nash. And just this week, his photos were exhibited at Wailea's Celebrities Gallery.
"Way back in England I got into it by always having a camera with me to take pictures on the road," Mick explains at the opening. "Unbeknownst to me (Fleetwood Mac's bassist) John McVie was the silent photographer, who, unlike me who was a snap merchant, would take 30 pictures with his Leica and never tell anyone. We shared a house in Hampshire and he put in a dark room. He took the picture of Bare Trees in the mist (the Fleetwood Mac album cover), and actually won an award. In a way he was a mentor. John taught me to think about what I was taking. We're trying to persuade him to have an exhibition with me."
Fleetwood's Celebrities Gallery exhibit focuses on archetypal English pastoral scenes - images of poppy fields, a country lane, swans and his mom's house - that have a strong emotional connection for the legendary musician.
"About three years ago, before I moved my mother here, I was in England in Salisbury for a while," he continues.
"She was having a hip operation and I was getting ready to move her to Hawaii. While she was in hospital I would drive around and find a place to sit and wait for the so- called artistic moment. I have fun doing that. I really enjoy it, it's very calming. All these pictures were not snapshots. The poppy field totally caught me. I went back and took pictures on two different days. Salisbury Plain was where I came home to for years. A lot of this is around my mother leaving England and taking shots that had an empathy with her leaving, parts of her garden, river shots and villages."
Pleased that his photo work is finding an audience, he notes: "We're going on a tour of some galleries with an extend version of this. Some of it is celebrity driven and once you get over that, why not? The worst that's going to happen is people are going to say, it sucks, which is probably a good thing to get whacked down."
One can't imagine Mick Fleetwood has ever been told his artistic endeavors suck. He's more used to reaping laudatory reviews. Touring last year with Fleetwood Mac, a U.K. Guardian newspaper review praised: "Fans of Fleetwood Mac's blues-rock band incarnation are sent into rapture when the band piles into 'Oh Well,' so electrifying it could power a small town."
Following the Mac shows, Mick recently completed a tour of Australia and New Zealand, opening some concerts for Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald with his Maui-based Mick Fleetwood Blues Band.
"It was fantastic," he reports. "Boz used to tour with us in the old days. I met Michael here and spent some time before we went on the road. He's absolutely the sweetest, totally not a rock 'n' roll star. It was a fun tour - they remember the old Fleetwood Mac stuff, because of the English thing. When you play 'Albatross' in the States, no one knows what it is; there we played it as an encore."
With a live CD and DVD (shot in England) out, various Blues Band gigs are in the works, including some European festivals and, "maybe opening up for Meatloaf," he says. And later in the year, they are booked to play some dates with Texas rockers ZZ Top.
"That's totally great," he enthuses. "Billy (Gibbons) is a huge Fleetwood Mac/Peter Green fan. He's itching to get out and play. He's aware of Rick (Vito) and loves his playing."
Then there's the possibility of hooking up with Joe Walsh in between his Eagles' dates.
"I'm thinking about people to do it with, and it struck me that Joe Walsh has played religiously, and I thought it would be a great combo because he's a real rock 'n' roller," he says. "What a great bill, two guys, one from Fleetwood Mac and one from the Eagles, getting together."
In December the concert website Pollstar reported plans were brewing for the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac to join forces this year for a historic, massive stadium tour.
"We were supposed to be doing it now," Mick explains. "We were open to doing it, but there were some timing and lighting issues. Stevie (Nicks) didn't want to go on for the whole thing in daylight. Sadly it fell apart. I think it should happen."
From all reports the Mac's 2009 "Unleashed Tour" was a resounding success, which has whetted appetites for a new album.
"John's game, I am and Lindsey (Buckingham) is. Stevie was not so keen to make the commitment," he says. "I really feel we will do another album. I plan to spend some time with Lindsey in L.A. and explore some producers."
Nicks, he reports, is currently teamed with Grammy- winning producer Don Was, compiling a country version of Mac's epic "Rumours" album. "There will be another version of 'Rumous,' with some fairly well-known country artists," he adds.
And he's talked with Buckingham about doing something. "I asked if he ever wanted to get together and play, and do a corporate gig or something. He said, 'I will,' which is sort of unusual. I pitched him, what about you, me and John, without Stevie, we could do some great old rock 'n' roll stuff. I said we could call it the Men of Mac. So the Men of Mac are available to play your bar mitzvah."
Among other musical projects, Mick might get together with one of the Mac's early members - guitarist Jeremy Spencer - for some show dates.
"Jeremy has a new album out, and he's said he would really like to do something," Mick reveals. "There's some tasty stuff on it. Jeremy likes floaty instrumentals and the album has several. His voice has totally come back and he's playing great. If I knew I was going to do a productive tour in Europe, the Jeremy Spencer Band could open up."
Heading out with the Blues Band reminds Mick of his early days with Fleetwood Mac, long before their transformation into global rock stars packing arenas and stadiums.
"We're not at all plugged into a production, we don't even have a lighting guy," he explains, chuckling. "It's all about playing, and it's freer."
In a recent interview he reported that at the age of 62, he was playing louder and harder than ever.
"It means I'm more desperate the older I get," he says breaking up laughing. "I've put some weight on and that's got something to do with it, and I keep pretty fit. I'm really enjoying playing and it's still there. My Fleetwood Mac drum tech is going. 'What the **** are you doing?' I have aluminum sticks and I've never done stuff to them, but on the last Mac tour, every other song (he indicates he had to keep replacing them). Something happened, I'm taking Hulk pills or something," he jokes. "The whole downtime from Fleetwood Mac I got away from playing because of my lifestyle. Then before I moved here, I was on the track to playing again because I was not completely out of my gourd all the time. The whole ethic of getting back and playing has really been a good thing."
The allure of Maui has helped Mick attract some heavyweight musical friends to join him at his island home. Neighbors of his Kula estate may have heard the distinctive vocals of Paul Rodgers, the legendary singer of Free (of "All Right Now" fame) and Bad Company, and most recently touring as Queen's front man.
"I had a great time playing with Paul Rodgers and Rick and John at the farm," he explains. "I was in London in the same hotel. I love his singing, he's one of the greatest English singers; there's Rod, Joe Cocker and him. So I phoned him up and invited him to Maui, and he came for two weeks. Something quite interesting might come out of it. We're looking at trying to put some kind of bluesy/rock 'n roll, Traveling Wilburys thing together. It could be on a small level or quite a grand level with Fleetwood Mac's rhythm section and some fairly well-known people all getting together."
Running Friday through Sunday the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel will host the second annual Henry Kaleialoha Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival. A celebration of music created on the Hawaiian steel guitar, the festival features a bunch of free workshops and concerts. It's presented as part of the 2010 Maui Invitational Music Festival, which culminates with a concert extravaganza on the Fourth of July.
"This festival is produced, managed, and staffed by Hawaiian people to promote the Hawaiian steel guitar," notes fest producer Sherron Allen. "We are thrilled to be able to showcase Henry's years of dedication to the Hawaiian steel guitar and to bring all these wonderful players together. This is a specialevent - there is so much continuous talent and entertainment all for free."
Entertainers performing include Alan Akaka and The Islanders, Danny Akaka, Jr., Duke Keolani Ching with Greg Sardinha and Gordon Freitas, Brickwood Galuteria, Aloha Kekoolani, Kiyoshi "Lion" Kobayashi, Bill Noble and special guest Dr. Neil Scott.
The gala event of the festival will be held under the stars in the hotel's Tiki Courtyard at 7:30 p.m.on Saturday with Henry Kaleialoha Allen playing steel guitar, ukulele, and jazz guitar.
Recognized in 2009 by the Hawaii State Senate as "Hawaiian Musician Extraordinaire" and a "Living Treasure," Allen is the last living Hawaiian steel guitarist who played on the legendary "Hawaii Calls" radio show. During the early Hawaiian Territorial days, he performed with local greats such as Alfred Apaka and Ren Paulo. His recent albums include the tropical swing/ jazz/Hawaiian CD, "A Lei of Stars," "Live in Tokyo," "Long Song of Hawaii" and "East of The Sun, West of The Moon," recorded live at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, with saxophonist Gabe Baltazar.

I guess we can narrow down with acute precision the culprit (or savior?) behind putting the kabosh on the Eagles. And it was because of daylight?? WTF?!!! That's our girl!
I like the fact that she is working with Don Was. But not crazy about yet another rehash of Rumours, that is, unless she is singing on all of the tracks. I suppose it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Taylor Swift will be on it.
And for the record, I would definitely go and see the Men of Mac!

And Don Was? Slightly more inspired than Dave Stewart, but, geez, welcome to 1990, Stevie.

This is something different than what Stevie is working on with Dave Stewart though. I would put my bet that what Mick is referring to is what Michelle Branch posted about a little while ago.

1. Daylight!!!! close call . . . The Eagles tour was a bad idea. Although it may have increased the Mac's audience to The Eagles country audience . . .
2. . . . thus bringing us to the potential savvy behind the Rumours country album which is also A TERRIBLE IDEA . . . no wonder they let Stevie be in charge of it since . . .
3. . . . Stevie is the cause of the new album's delay. Now, working with John, Mick, and Lindsey may indeed be a living hell for her or for anyone (who knows?), but that's no excuse to eternity and to sacrifice this chemistry which may be displayed by . . .
4. . . .the Men of Mac, which might be the next best thing to the fullfledged Fleetwood Mac renaissance of which I had dreamt before Stevie stamped it out and left it performing bar mitzvahs!

I can't even begin to contemplate how I feel about this. A country version of Rumours just isn't my cup of tea. I feel we know it won't be as good as the original, so it should be done really differently so you can hear the songs in a completely different genre. That being said, Mac isn't country, but country isn't that big of a step out there. Most songs can be covered as country songs and it just seems so cliche and cheesy. I'd be more open to a Punk goes Rumours album, I think it would sound considerably different and be enjoyed by a lot of younger people, whereas country is not as popular amongst the younger generation. However, it may be decent if they get really good artists on there. Also, I don't believe this means Stevie isn't doing a solo album. Her photoshoot and work with Dave Stewart and Mike Campbell (and whoever else she has been working with that we don't know about) clearly isn't for this Rumours album. I think Stevie may get some production credits for this and may do some backing vocals, but no lead vocals nor will her picture be plastered all over the album.
Best case scenario?
This album comes out in June (which would explain the rumours of what Liz Rozenberg said), and then Stevie releases a solo album later this year with a end of summer/fall tour to promote it. Then the tribute album and the solo album garnish some extra public interest in Fleetwood Mac and Stevie will have gone off and done her thing for a year so she will be much more open to the Mac and in 2011 they reunite in the studio (hell, maybe Chris will join... I did say best case scenario ;)) and record a new album with a 2012 release.
Worst case scenario?
This turns out to be some off the wall, Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus tainted tribute album to rehash and profit off of Rumours yet again. Then we get no new solo album, just a few casino shows rehashing the same old songs because Stevie doesn't have "**** else to do" and then Fleetwood Mac officially becomes the Men of Mac since both Chris and Stevie are off being stubborn and nobody lives happily ever after.

Wow, this would be simply orgasmic. I love the "Punk Goes" series, and this would just be incredible. Can you imagine the publicity? They actually are coming out with Punk Goes Classic Rock, and they could have easily replaced it with Punk Goes Fleetwood Mac. Instead it will be a stupid effing country album. This will just make them seem lamer to the younger generation (Miranda and other young ledgies excluded).

Younger generation=new fans. I'm not saying they should come out and try to release some new album completely aimed at young people, neglecting the fans they already have. My question is why is it ever a good idea to release a tribute album? To gain exposure and increase sales. I think if a tribute album, such as a punk rock one, was made, a lot of the younger generation would buy it because their favorite bands are on it, which would automatically increase profits for the mac and turn create some new mac fans. I just feel a country album wouldn't be as persuasive when it comes to getting new fans.

I think its great when younger people enjoy FM- I just don't think its necessarily a wise idea to *target* the younger demographic, as 1) increasingly fewer 13-30 year-olds who know how to use the Internet actually pay for music (ex. recent chart toppers- indomitable youthforce favorites Susan Boyle & Sade) and, 2), younger people, generally speaking, can't afford FM concert tickets.
So, no, cannibalizing your target audience by transparently pandering to a generation that views/treats music as something inherently disposable isn't exactly what FM should be doing in 2010. Organically produced tribute albums are all well and good, but if one of your lead singers is all over most/all of the tracks (instead of creating new, original art), isn't it just a shameless beating-a-dead-horse vanity project?

If they are going to have a fleetwood mac tribute album they should pick songs from all there catalogs which is a lot they are a legendary band and not just known for the Rumours album. I agree Taylor Swift should not be on this tribute cd of remaking Rumours country version it doesn't sit well with me about this this will be the second tribute album for making Rumours they should pick out of all the catalog of songs FM has done no need to redo fleetwood mac's rumours album it was done in 1977 and no one can ever touch that to me and I am sure I am not the only one on here that feels that way. So Stevie was the one that screwed up the tour with the eagles saying she only wanted to perform at night and lighting and timing issues too I am sure it was not just her but mick makes it seem like it was in the interview. I would love to see The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac tour together it would have been awesome i know ticket prices will not be kind to our wallets either if it did happen. please no more remaking of rumours its has come back more times than Shirley Maclaine..lol if your going to have artists do a tribute to fleetwood mac at least let them pick out of the catalog no need to redo a master piece of an album. I need a protonix my hiatel hernia and acid reflux are acting up...lol

So the Men of Mac are available to play your bar mitzvah."[/B]
Before I say this, I like Stevie, really! But.......maybe Mick, John, and Lindsey Should drop her from Fleetwood Mac! I mean, none of them are getting any younger and I think if the other three are ready to do a new album, she should either do it or leave. I guess that sounds harsh....but this country Rumours project is unnecessary!! Especially when there are SO many more things Stevie could be doing!

They won't ever officially get rid of Stevie. There is barely a Fleetwood Mac without Christine, there wouldn't be one at all without Stevie and Christine.

Reading Mick's comments just makes me wonder why Stevie seems to be so resistant to producing new music. 2010 is just like 2000 - same songs, same clothes, same hair, same young girls she wants to collaborate with.
After last year's tour, I was really hoping for another Mac album soon...just to experience the end to end experience as a FM fan from the anticipation of the album to the release to the touring. I really got on the bandwagon a bit to late with SYW to ride that out.
But then all the buzz over the past month and a half of a new Stevie album got me excited because I'm dying to hear something new from her. But if all this time all that is happening is a country rehash of Rumours with the likelihood of more Natalie Maines, Sheryl Crow, etc, then I'm just bummed. Like I said above, how is this any different from the story that was in place 10 years ago.
I really hope she has something fabulous in the hopper and all this gossip is just gossip. One can hope and dream.

I'm a young Ledgie (20) and if this monstrosity transpires, I'll consider it very, VERY lame indeed.

I don't know what everybody's got their knickers in a twist over... I think it's great. So, Stevie's working on a tribute album. Big deal. That doesn't mean she's not doing anything else. It also means she wants to make sure it's done right. Good for her. She was raised on country music and it makes sense, it that regard. Too bad country ain't country anymore, but I digress....
I can see LBT doing "The Chain", since they already did with LB....
On the subject of tributes/covers: Dolly Parton did a bluegrass version of "Stairway to Heaven". By the way, the Rolling Stones, Eagles and AC/DC country/bluegrass tribute albums weren't half bad. It's a compliment for artists to be recognized by other genres. It means your music has no boundaries, which is a good thing.
Just because it's not your taste of music, but it doesn't mean it's bad music.

If a bunch of country artists want to get together & contribute to a FM tribute album, that's great. I'm one of the people who enjoyed Patty Loveless' cover of Silver Springs from last year- I'd give it a shot.
But Stevie and/or other members of the band appearing on most/all of the tracks? (which seems to be what we're going to get) "Tacky" isn't a strong enough word.

Why is everyone acting so shocked and horrified about something we ALREADY knew about?
Michelle Branch tweeted this back in February, so now Mick has provided some more details on it. I find it so amusing that people think Stevie is incapable of doing this and her own solo project, simultaneously. I also find it interesting that people are so quick to disregard Stevie and Dave Stewart's work just because Mick didn't mention it in this interview.

Stevie's lighting and daylight issues confirm for me that she is a vampire. I wonder if she is one of those vamp brands that sparkle in the sunlight.
Lindsey playing corporate gigs as one of the "Men of Mac" is the saddest thing I've ever heard. If they toured, that would be great, but they're just going to be playing at the Toyota sales conference to make a quick book. So disheartened. Linds, are you doing this to support just a family of five or do you have secret broods stored away on every continent that you're sending money to?

We're pissed because she's piddling and wasting time. We want NEW material. NEW! It's been 9 years since we've had a new solo album! 7 years for Fleetwood Mac! There have been plenty of Mac cover songs! There's a FANTASTIC Rumours tribute album that came out 13 years ago. Enough of the Rumours rehashing! We don't need a box set of Rumours. We don't need to hear "George Jones does the Gold Dust Woman!" We've heard nothing but Rumours every Mac/Solo tour since 1977! Seriously Stevie, stop lollygagging. Stop with the friggen lame ass excuses. Stop piddling with adding tracks to somebody else's solo album. We need to hear from you, Stevie! The world is **** right now, has been for a long time! Haha, even my friends that don't know her too well said this.
It's so strange that they are getting so old, yet slowing down with new material. How am I going to explain to my kids that Stevie Nicks was such a great woman, when I am left with this turd to show them. All day I have been thinking about this country thing, and it makes me more and more angry. The only reason this is happening is because country is safe. Look at Jewel. She was perfectly fine until she went country. Once you go country....

A little surprised at Mick. It may be true, but Mick's a bit of a cad for the insinuation that Stevie won't face the public in broad daylight and that's why The Eagles cash-cow tour didn't happen for Fleetwood Mac. It may be part of the reason, but it also may be that Stevie deservedly decided after 'Unleashed' that she might like to see what else she might be able to do, while there's a little time left. I'm so glad that she- and Fleetwood Mac will not be a part of The Eagles tour about to happen.
I don't believe the country 'Rumours' project is taking up a lot of Stevie's time- hey, I can be wrong- but I think her involvement is not overseeing or producing the entire album. I found the comment kind of sour grapes, I think he knows Stevie is working on a solo cd that has nothing to do with the country 'Rumours' release. Could be he is ticked that Stevie wouldn't go into the studio with Fleetwood Mac or say 'yes' to the huge money Eagles pairing, and blamed it on natural light, not maybe that Stevie is a tad sick ( I hope) of the Fleetwood Mac oldies she just spent a year doing, earning Mick a fortune, as well as herself.
But, on the other hand, Mick's keeping the tradition alive, a member of Fleetwood Mac being a bit less than charitable about another member, unless they're working together at the moment. Haha, Mick, no Eagles tour money for you!

I really want to comment on this but I just can't find the words. A little piece of me just died with the whole 'country Rumours' and 'Men of Mac' thing. Not to say I wouldn't enjoy seeing just the blokes doing their thang.. but it really does sound like Stevie can't be bothered to make the effort anymore. Sad times.

* A complete schedule of festival events is available online at www.aecg.org, or by calling 669-6189.You know, I'm reading some of those highlighted comments, and "resounding success" is simply not true, at least here in the states it wasnt at several of the shows I went to. In my opinion, which I might add isnt based on any factual info just an educated guess, I think the band would've gone out this year similar to their 2003/2004 tour, I.E secondary markets and sheds and the like, but the promoters lost alot of money at certain shows so they were reluctant to garauntee the Mac's price. just a guess on my part.

I'm upset that Stevie is being made a villain in this. Unfair. And why? Because Mick's pissed he's not getting tour money with The Eagles. He has his side projects, and good for him.
I think Stevie is the hero here. No-way is she holding up progress with Fleetwood Mac by not doing another rehash tour, this time with the freakin Eagles!
Even if Stevie had said 'yes' to recording with Fleetwood Mac right away, there wouldn't have been time (how?) to finish a new Fleetwood Mac cd before The Eagles tour starts- Lindsey, brilliant as he is, isn't exactly smooth sailing in the studio, and they never did settle on an outside producer for the cd. The Eagles tour starts any minute, now. So, Mick just seems pissed he missed out on another mega tour, where, likely, Fleetwood Mac would have revisited a shorter version of their 'Unleashed' set.
I didn't read anywhere that Stevie will be singing (!) on the entire 'Country Rumours' album, where did that come from? We knew months ago of Stevie's involvement with Michele Branch on the project. There was no indication, ever, that Stevie was involved with working on the entire 'Country Rumours' album. Did Mick even say that in this interview?
Stevie actually showed more integrity than anyone here seems to have noticed, by saying NO to Fleetwood Mac so soon after Unleashed ended! You think Mick's all upset they didn't get into a studio right away for a new Fleetwood Mac album? F*** No- he wanted the Eagles tour money. Why else would he rag on her about lighting and performing in daylight? Such issues are recording-studio related? He's disappointed, and after Stevie and Lindsey just earned him a fortune on Unleashed.
No way will any of Stevie's solo dates be as many dates as The Eagles tour. So, she may actually be able to finish her solo cd, which has nothing to do with the 'Country Rumours' project, do some dates without fully depleting herself, and we may even get 2 or 3 new songs at her solo shows, who the hell knows.
Stevie then may be ready for Fleetwood Mac in 2011, with no tour with The Eagles to interfere with the recording.
I think the criticism leveled at Stevie in this thread has been too severe. I wouldn't blame her if she told Mick to shove Fleetwood Mac and go perform in natural light with Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason. Really, Mick went too far with the comment, the gal soon turns 62, and without her (and Lindsey) he wouldn't have made the MANY millions he has on the last two tours. You're a cad, Mick Fleetwood.
Louie, your fire graphic; even though likely a joke, I kind of want to cry. I know, time to get the meds checked again, go ahead, laugh. It's kewl :)

I agree. I hope this all turns out well, and I am rather pleased that Stevie did not want to tour with the Eagles. That being said, I have to accept the fact that this may just end up being another rehash that will never amount to anything new. We will just have to wait it out.

I think Mick's comment about Stevie not wanting to perform in daylight really means Stevie resisted the idea of Fleetwood Mac being the opening act.

I know this is a pretty elementary idea, but I just don't get it. I do not understand FM's pure obsession with only doing things for the money, as they have MORE than plenty. They are a group of musicians who have/ had great talent and ability. There is no reason why they couldn't do an album and tour with that and make some great money. Why they are relegating themselves to this kind of.... mediocrity is beyond me.
I know they've been doing this for 40 years, but apparently some of them still somewhat enjoy being creative, so I just don't see why they don't dedicate a few months to knocking out an album in the studio. It's frustrating because if I were ever given an opportunity to record, release, and promote and album, and then go on tour with it, I'd ADORE the opportunity. Then to be able to start the cycle again, slightly redefining yourself and whatnot- it would never get old, and if it did, I would have to stop wholeheartedly, and not continue to do this relishing in past glory, greatest hits stuff.
Just my take.

Come take us out of it, just for an hour's worth of album time! :distress:
You don't know that she's not doing new material. I think she's always got several irons in the fire. I bet she's one of the best multi-taskers around. She probably leaves one studio and goes to another. I mean, the song with Dave Stewart was not on Rumours - unless it was supposed to be... And, don't worry - George Jones won't be on this.
Everyone's attitude about this massively sucks.
You bitch because you want Stevie to be working on something, then you bitch because of who's she's working with, you bitch because she's not touring, you bitch because she is touring, you bitch because you haven't heard any updates, you bitch when you hear the update...
Man, sometimes it IS a bitch....
So glad she doesn't care what we think!

I appreciate your positive outlook on this...but I can't help but question this theory. If she's such a great multi tasker (which I don't doubt she is, and certaintly was for many years during her heyday) why hasn't she found the time in the past nine years to make a new album? Yes, she kept herself busy with touring and the SYW project but nine years is a long time. She certaintly could have found the time if she wanted to. Unless she got hit by a bolt of lighting recently, it just seems unlikely that she would all of the sudden be burning the candle at both ends to get both these projects done. Why the sudden urgency?

Have you ever thought of doing a country album?
Stevie's answer: Yes, I have. Maybe some day I will manage to make it happen!

I am hopeful that Stevie is working on new music, and I look forward to hearing it, and was muy happy to hear the piece that Dave leaked out to us. That's evidence that something is really happening. We often hear that songs are being written, journals are being kept, but the fact that we actually got to hear something, no matter what stage it's in, is exciting to me.
About set lists during tours, I don't think Stevie particularly cares what we think (she's never sought that sort of information from us, and she's got a website where she could)--in fact, I don't think she has a clue what some folks think here. People at the shows pay the money and they cheer. They sing along, and dance along to her stuff, and they buy the shirts, etc. It's all positive reinforcement to Stevie that something is working to her. She doesn't take polls. She doesn't take requests. Her assessment is from the stage. Stevie is the boss of her solo career, and she is the one stuck up on the stage having to belt it out--her evaluation of her own work is done LIVE, and she probably sees the replays. In her mind it's all working. She's having fun, and so she continues doing it.
She is a multi millionare boss , the one that pays all her employees. There's not too many of her solo employees that can actually challenge her, if you think about it, as she is in control of the payroll. I don't see Jimmy Paxson or Brett Tuggle or Carlos Rios saying, "You know Stevie, folks are getting 'sick & tired' of hearing Landslide. They hear it with Fleetwood Mac, they hear it solo, they hear various covers of it- isn't it overkill?" You think Darryl Smith or Taku would want to approach her? Maybe Al Ortiz? Hey, they are just happy to be out on the road working, and she takes pretty good care of them. If anyone came up to Stevie that way, can you see Stevie's head just exploding, since she sees and hears the audiences' response every time she does it. The audience sings along.
How many of Stevie's paid employees, including Sharon, Lori or Jana would feel comfortable asking Stevie to "shake it up a little bit." Lori posted on the Nicks Fix that "Nightbird" is one of her favorite songs that she ever sang with Stevie. You have to believe Stevie knows Lori loved that song. For whatever reason, she doesn't sing it. It's different in Fleetwood Mac, she's said that many times. It's much easier with FM as she doesn't have to make all the decisions, but solo wise, as Waddy's Q&A points out, "Hey, it's her show. She's got to be comfortable [with the set list/song choices] or we're going to be in trouble." She won't be smiling, and it's going to show.
For those sick of the set list, I suggest you limit the number of shows you attend. Seriously. You don't have to go to any shows, and certainly not more than one show on a tour. You know by now the set list doesn't vary much night to night. It is Stevie's thing. She's going to do what she wants to do. You know that your best chance of hearing something new is opening night, and after that, songs stand a good chance of getting dropped. This is true for Stevie whether she's in Fleetwood Mac or solo. You get to vote with your wallet and your feet.
I'm hoping we get more new stuff. I hope I get to see her this summer. I really do. Country Rumours? Not sure what that's about. Stevie's got a country background. Carrie Underwood just won entertainer of the year, and there are definitely some good voices out there. I don't know if Stevie intends to be on a cover album of the band's album--but I am curious to see what comes of that. Yes, I'll probably buy it. I bought the Camper Van Beethoven/Tusk cover, and the Legacy album--totally different, but I enjoyed them. I admit after buying them I rarely play them. But I am curious! Especially upon hearing that Stevie has some sort of interest and input in it.

I have to agree with you about bekka trying to be stevie on the time tour i did see them with pat benatar orleans and reo speedwagon and FM went on last alot of people walked out during there performace to me if there is no stevie there is no fleetwood mac end of story and to have some one else do her songs is just wrong that is me. i was one of them i am a die hard fan of fleetwood mac and stevie nicks since 1979 when I was 9 years old have been into fleetwood mac and that time tour was a terrible tour i though i did leave i think after gold dust woman performance was terrible.

P.S you guys Hole and Courntey Love did Gold Dust Woman at last night's show. It was a total surprise since she hasn't included it thus far on the current tour dates. I just happen to be wearing my Crystal Visions t-shirt so maybe that had something to do with it ;). As you can imagine I was elated. I always thought it was a pretty good cover.

[QUOTE=Nikolaj;885822]A little surprised at Mick.
I found the comment kind of sour grapes, knows SteI think he vie is working on a solo cd that has nothing to do with the country 'Rumours' release.
But, on the other hand, Mick's keeping the tradition live, a member of Fleetwood Mac being a bit less than charitable about another member, unless they're working together at the moment. Haha, Mick, no Eagles tour money for you!
After reading this entire thread, your posts are the ones i think i agree with the most. Im kind of confused now, because i could have been ok or not ok with the eagles and fleetwoodmac touring together or not together. But people on the board were VIOLENTLY AGAINST THE PAIRING!!! And now that we "know" (read: mick insinuating it was stevie" who made the idea not happen, people are VIOLENTLY AGAINST!!!! Fleetwood mac not still together to go on YET ANOTHER tour. AND no one ever said that she was NOT working on a solo album, we have nothing to believe that the country album and the dave stewart thing are the same. AS SOME HAVE INSINUATED. Mick is just being pissy because hes now gonna have to SELL ALOTTA WINE, TAKE ALOTTA PICTURES, AND PLAY ALLOTTA BAMITZVAS (Sp?) to even come CLOSE to the cash he would have made otherwise. AND when Mr. Buckingham "held up" fleetwood mac to go "do his own thing" that was all fine and good and he was as usual praised for his "Brilliance" but now that the platform boot is on the other foot, some people want to "burn the witch" just because they hate country music.:confused::shocked::rolleyes:

Wow,just the the I've been waiting for ages ago..Fleetwood Mac Goes country.Sorry non country lovers about busting balls.I just can see FM on the Grand Ole Opry, kicking a$$.also cleaning up the CMA and the ACM awards too.eat your heart out Taylor.
I KNEW you would weigh in on this!:wavey: "George Jones" is not what country even sounds like anymore. you and I both know that. "County" is more what "rock" and "folk rock" used to be. if they re-released Buckingham Nicks, "the country audience" could REALLY enjoy that style of song. and there are alot of "crossover" things being done now, lady antebellum , jewel, carrie underwood, and the show country crossovers has done very well. My favorite being martina mcbride and pat benatar. that rocked. Country is not all bad people.

I think Tango's & Nicolaj's posts are bang on. Also, as a fan, Stevie doesn't owe me anything. It's my choice whether or not I continue to support her/go to her shows/buy the merchandise, etc. I also have the choice, that if she isn't giving as much as I would like, to move on. There is nothing that requires me to continue to follow every move she makes. I haven't any rights to make any demands on her or bitch about how she spends her time. Would I absolutely love for her to put out a new album, solo & FM, every couple of years? Of course! However, if we never get another song/album from her, I'll be grateful for all she has done and the songs she has written because they mean something to me.

Louie, your fire graphic; while nicely done, even though likely a joke, I kind of want to cry. I know, time to get the meds checked again, go ahead, laugh. It's kewl :)
All good points.

I'm not knocking Stevie in any way whatsoever or saying I won't support her participation in this project if it happens - I'm simply not a fan of country music and could not see myself every really getting into the songs if they were done this way but you never know. All I'm saying is for Stevie to actually be working on something new (you know what I mean) that's going to be released I would prefer pretty much any genre over county. Opera perhaps ? Being the intrinsically musical person that I am I find it difficult to connect and really feel the essence of country music and/or appreciate it. It's not really a choice, it's just a feeling...

It's humorous that you would have an adversion to country music when you were all over that demo thread trying to collect as much music as possible. Most of those demos are country tinged songs. Heck, a lot of the Bella Donna album was borderline country.
Nikolaj, Phoenix and GypsyBlueEyes; I agree with your comments. I do believe Stevie has earned the right at this point in her career to do whatever the hell wishes (of course she was entitled to do that from day one in my opinion).
I am hopeful that a solo album will see the light of day within the next 18 months and until then, anything else (eg the Rumours tribute album) that comes along will be welcomed by me. I'm not overly keen on another album of cover versions but if there's one or two tracks that work, that's fine with me. I'm keen to hear what Stevie did with Michelle Branch and let's face it, if they recorded "Say You Love Me" as a country track, that's not too removed from the version featured on "The Dance" album.
I wonder if pesky old Mick even has his facts correct? Has he perhaps just presumed that the album will be in a country style or is he aware of one or two country artists being involved? Don Was is not a renowned producer of country music, his roots are in dance, soul and blues but he tends to favour an acoustic approach. As much as I wouldn't want him producing Stevie's album (I'm still trying to forget "Somebody Stand By Me"), his involvement in this project may be a major plus. I daresay he will keep the cheese factor to a minimum (trotters crossed).
I imagine Stevie's input will be more as an executive producer, overseeing here and there, as well as possibly being a reference point for both Don and the contributing artists. I doubt whether this will take up much of her time in the grand scheme of things. Who knows, perhaps reacquainting herself with all of these songs from a technical standpoint might inspire her current writing spree?

Whatever you do Stevie I'll be happy.. As the years go by TIME for her is running thin and I think all sorts will be signed over in the next 5 years regarding her music, art and rights to a film.
This Rumours rehash will probably sell well.. Think of all the people who like country and know Rumours but don't have strong love for Mac and Stevie?? Surely they'll be interested.. Country music does well in the U.S and over here in Oz.. (Keith Urban).. So chances are the artists contributing will be well known an loved by some furthermore giving reason to buy it.. If Taylor Swift and/or Miley Cyrus appear on it (much to my dislike... Except for that song Miley sings with John Travolta I actually enjoy that) well then that opens another door of "tweens" buying it..
Then there is us who will also more than likely buy.. Thats a demographic not reached by any of the Mac albums since Tusk probably..
There isn't a chance in hell Stevie would let Fleetwood Mac record an album without her.. She'd be pissed as all hell.. As would I..

Nicks, he reports, is currently teamed with Grammy- winning producer Don Was, compiling a country version of Mac's epic "Rumours" album. "There will be another version of 'Rumous,' with some fairly well-known country artists,"
Another version of Rumours you say?
I guess it will fit nicely on the shelf by
Legacy: A Tribute To Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1998).
Since that was Micks' version of Rumours we will see how Stevie's
compares to his. Kind of a Jewel vs. Miley thing.
"Rumous"(^), I don't have that album.

Thanks for keeping it real! Like many die hard Stevie fans, I often think I know exactly what Stevie is doing wrong and the perfect way the fix everything. But you did sum up her perspective on things, particularly her setlist of choice, quite clearly. Though I still don't like it, it all makes perfect sense now.
Thanks again for your insights!

Classic country is incredible. Modern day country is completely stupid. When they sang this song that is what they were talking about, not "You Belong With Me".
When it is confirmed that Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty are doing "I Don't Wanna Know", I will be interested in this project.

Lindsey backed out of a theater tour in Fall '01 at the last moment that would have paired him with Mick (never did get confirmation whether John would have been on board too), so its definitely interesting that Lindsey seems to be open to the idea.
As for the corporate gig comment & rationalizing it with seemingly no new solo album on the horizon... is it possible that, like many of us, Lindsey got hit hard by the economy in late '08? The fact he signed off on the Unleashed tour (which severely stunted some major "farewell" tour potential- historically, Lindsey is the one who has the most astute eye towards/regarding the future, & the balancing/development of band-related projects) could mean that the days of Lindsey willfully losing millions of dollars on his extravagant, masturbatory solo treks could be over.
(if only the same thing could be said about Kristen's constant need for new houses to be bought/decorated to enhance her portfolio)

Really disheartening, isn't it? :distress: Well, maybe they figure if they started doing stuff without Stevie, it'd have a reverse psychology effect on her and she'd get a grip. In the end, she's acting like a spoiled child. She gets an absurd cut of FM's touring profits, and she basically holds these other 3 men's livelihoods in her hands. I know somebody else commented earlier in this thread that they disliked Mick's doing the band's laundry in public. Well, Stevie's done that since day one... and especially so this past decade. It's the "Men of Mac's" turn to swing back at her some in my opinion.

I think you're spot on with all that. Lindsey's portfolio likely took an enormous hit during this recession, all the while Kristin spends his money like it's going out of style. I've often thought that she was probably the reason the whole Unleashed tour happened: she probably had Lindsey by the balls demanding he make some money to pay for his solo tours and their extravagant lifestyle.

Hey, I have a right to my extreme intense hate just as much as some people have extreme intense love around here! :D I'm just upset because I feel Stevie is lollygagging and stringing us fans along. The first few times I heard Illume I was left totally scratching my head, because I felt John's bass line was just way too hip hop/rap esque. Stevie's always said at her core, she's an R&B singer (something that's ALSO left me scratching my head!). Ten years ago when she was working with Dallas Austin on Trouble In Shangri La, it seemed like a more R&B tinged Stevie was an imminent reality. And at the time, I really didn't have a problem with it. It would have been something NEW. Unlike another Rumours rehash... ;)

I'm just thinkin' that if we have to have a rehash of Rumours done in a different style, country is NOT the way to go. It's gotta be rap.
Why? 'Cos under all the feathers and chiffon, I know in my heart of hearts that Stevie is just straight buck, dawg. I mean, look at the SNL performance of "Stand Back" - it clearly demonstrates her sadly unsung role in helping to pioneer the dance style now known as "krump."
Do the rap album, Stevie! Finally be recognized and get the street (angel) cred you deserve!

Lindsey willfully losing millions of dollars on his extravagant, masturbatory solo treks could be over.
Masturbatory?? I think Lindsey's ego gets stroked much more on the FM, large venue, rock star tours than solo. He's the headliner when he goes solo, but it seems to be a much more familial environment among the band members and a giving experience with the fans. The costly solo tours certainly seem fulfilling to him, gratifying, but not in a selfish way. They're a creative outlet and seem to be more about camaraderie and group participation. If anything, I see them as more orgy than masturbation.

All jokes aside, there's a distinctly misogynistic tone creeping into some of the posts within this thread that I find a little disturbing. To those concerned, why not save your venom for those desperate "Men of Mac" instead?
There is no doubt in my mind that Steve is in fact recording a solo album with Dave Stewart on production duties. Dave's solo project, that he has previously mentioned in passing, is an entirely separate affair, just as the Rumours tribute album is. Stevie may or may not be contributing to all three (separate) projects in varying degrees, but I imagine she is intent on getting her very own album made as soon as possible.

I find it hard to believe Stevie "ruined" any "hopes" of Mick Fleetwood. More the opposite...since, Silver Springs twice...and for years! Where was Stevie when HE needed a bailout after bankruptsy? Front and center when her solo career was at its peak. Maybe he needs another bailout from bad investments like, selling boxed wine at Costco's Mick Fleetwoods Vintage boxed urinal Chablis.
If she is doing a Country Rumors she had to pay top dollar for the rights to the songs and the title...and for singles and performances.
To add for her whole career she's maintained the same schedule of nights over days...and didn't Don Henley screw her over on the 2 voices tour...and the years of Joe Walsh thing?
On the same subject isn't Stevie under the same contractual bound deal to Warner/Reprise? So a double recording whammy of her lacking an outlet for her to express freedom in her artistic endevours. Warners demands for a hit sound and hit Commercial songs...and the same for Fleetwood Mac records...so maybe Stevie no longer wants to pray to the commercial Gods...
All band members will benefit from her and this record...if its true.
Mick is a crybaby...and a finger pointer.
And Stevie has always been there...once bitten a million times bitten...and only once shy?
Please, itss only Stevie defending herself publicly when she has been framed as the difficult one...ie...as in her displeasure over Silver Springs...and Say You Will recording conflicts. We have heard her songs from Mac albums as boots recorded the way she wanted the vibe to sound...Running Thru The Garden, Thrown Down, Silver Girl etc...and its on dvd at points where her lyrics are challenged and calls are made because she wanted "Monica" mixed independantly out of frustration.
So, join Mick in framing her...and wonder where Chris is...and how well albums sold without Stevie...and compare concert draws among solo projects of each band member.
Also, she doesn't need to record a new album except for contract obligations...and she has plenty of money.
I know for a fact that she's been wanting to do some country stuff since the beginning...you've heard the boots and the slight coutryish sound on the released records.
For her fans she should be supported, not bashed...and wonder about the "real story".

This.
What I'm taking umbrage at is not that she wants to do something country, but that she wants to take Rumours, which has just been done to death, and make THAT country. Just what the world needs - another Rumours rehash.
Though I'm not a country fan myself (I'm still mentally scarred from that one summer I worked at the Opryland Hotel - the horror, the horror), I don't particularly care if Stevie wants to do a country album, because at least she'd be doing something.
I think that if she were releasing new material on a more frequent basis, this would not really be an issue at all for any of us - it would be more of a curiosity or a novelty. If you are a country fan, then you might dig it. If you are not a country fan, then you might not dig it, but it'd be okay, because you wouldn't be worried you'll have to wait another million years to hear something else.
It just sucks that she hasn't hit us with a new album of new material for ages now, and when she does finally get around to doing some work, it's...stuff we already heard before. Only twangy.

Well...
I've skipped the last few copyright negotiation meetings so, I don't know why she's re-doing Rumors...and why the other bandmates are letting her do it. Karen was just here...I should have asked her what is she thinking? !!? And you're so right...why doesn't she use new material? Sharon Celani wouldn't answer if she's waiting for her contract to end...and use them for people that encourage and believe in her music enough to promote it without her praying to the commercial gods...so I hung up on Sharon and called Lindsey's soon to be ex wife and she was laughing and screaming something about, ALL Mine...ALL of it...ahahahahahahaha...I left a message with Micks manager and I overheard Mick saying something like, Ca-Ching...Lori just groaned...and said Stevie was too busy working on the vocals for never going back again, second hand news and oh daddy. I murmured, oh daddy! Oh no! Lori laughed wickedly and said, "oh Jim...you're such a pill!"
I pretty much get my info from the paper and tv clips. When I WAS in showbiz I knew people in her circle so, I got info then but I'm doing other things. I know about her country album dreams...like many here. This does sound surprising in regards to Redoing Rumors...but again, it may be due to what I've mentioned in my post above.
Again, who knows...I've skipped those boring lawyer/manager meetings.

Well I hope you're right and your post got me thinking. Dave S. and Stevie have been intentionally hush hush about what they're up (or not) up to these past several months. Maybe they don't want word getting out, and that includes giving big mouth Mick the same instructions. I really don't understand the comments about not liking country, in this day and age. There is no bright line between country and not-country in most Top-40 cases. Do people really think Faith Hill's This Kiss is a country song?
I didn't like Circle Dance because I thought it dragged, but I didn't think it was "too country." If Stevie was perusing her Bonnie Raitt albums and decided to cover I Can't Make You Love Me (When You Don't), it'd be a lot more exciting than Rock and Roll.
When Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock did Picture, I could not understand why it was being played on country stations for the life of me. They weren't country artists and it didn't sound "country."
If Stevie were doing "country" songs, they'd probably sound more like Straight Back than Coal Miner's Daughter. It's not a strictly banjo genre that has its own little drawer and twang anymore, not as far as my ears can tell.
And as far as the banjo goes, Say You Love Me was a highlight of the Dance tour, so bring it on.

First of all everyone is entitled to their opinion as far as not understanding why people dislike county. Secondly, the lines today between county and top 40 can be a bit blurred but it's possible that people don't like the country-ish top 40 songs whether they're on the country charts or hot 100. Also, there are still some strictly country artists out there that don't fit the Faith Hill, Taylor Swift pop-country mold.
So basically, there is some country music out there that isn't so pop.
If Stevie were doing "country" songs, they'd probably sound more like Straight Back than Coal Miner's Daughter. It's not a strictly banjo genre that has its own little drawer and twang anymore, not as far as my ears can tell.

As far as the Rumours country version, we have no idea just how "country" it's going to be. It could lean more towards the pop-country or be very country. At this point it's anybody's guess so yes, we can be afraid of the fiddle.

Right on Michelle. I love Country...the before my time country...Loretta, Conway, Cash, Sovine etc...
Stevie often speaks of her Country Roots...the most demo or outtake to note is the Rockabilly, My Heart...and its awesome.
She has always said that sometimes when her songs are handed over for production she cringes at the overly altered and overly produced end result.
Good Song...No Questions Asked.
RELEASED...so over produced you can't even hear her obviously layered from the origanal demo vocal track. She was on a solo tour and the took the vocaL off of a very different sounding demo. End result...Too Far From Stevie.

I agree. I hope this all turns out well, and I am rather pleased that Stevie did not want to tour with the Eagles. That being said, I have to accept the fact that this may just end up being another rehash that will never amount to anything new. We will just have to wait it out.
I have to say this: Stevie is being pretty smart. Why open for the Eagles? In the 70s the Mac beat the Eagles. The only reason The Eagles do so well is that their sound is basically what country has become. The Mac doesn't really have a market, or someplace to play their videos. Stevie doesn't have a market. There is no place that plays classic rock people unless they convert to country.
1. A country rumours will do well. A lot of country folk respect the mac and would like to do them justice. Maybe if this happens, it will open up more doors for the aging macsters.
2. Stevie is not a villian. Everyone knows, Mick's money hungry. He just wants the money. The tour might still happen in the future.
3. Stevie really doesn't need to be touring at all. It's time to put out more music. The tour crap is just crap. Are they going to go onstage with walkers.

Is there a country version of "My Heart?" I'm only aware of the overproduced mess (thanks, Mike Campbell  ) that was left off of TISL.
If Stevie does country, I do hope she is at least staying true to the more traditional form, e.g., "Red River Valley," than the stylized crap they play on modern country hits radio these days. If we can't get new songs, I would still love love love for her to record an album of traditional country standards like RRV; she sounded soooo good on that song with Chris Isaak!

What is wrong with disliking country? And simply disliking this entire project? I for one can stand very little country, and modern day country is not good at all. It all sounds very similar, horrible song writing etc... But just because I dislike country does not mean that I dislike what Stevie is doing  This could turn out brilliant, and I could love it, but that still doesn't change the fact that I dislike country. She could easily brush this off to the side just like the hundred other unfinished projects. If she doesn't, and goes all the way through with it then a solo album must not be a high priority. That is what really annoys me with this whole thing. It has been 9 years, and she obviously isn't retired...that is an enormous wait between solo albums. And 7 between Mac albums  It really is just disheartening. Trouble In Shangri-La and Say You Will could easily be their last records (they are that good) but they don't have to be. Point is: a country Rumours album is so not necessary, and those that think that have the right to.

Really? I don't think any of the criticism has to do with Stevie's gender. I found the cover story that Mick and Stevie made up about why Sheryl didn't join the band (i.e. had a small child to care for and didn't want to miss mother's day) a bit more disturbing on that level.
I don't even really see hostility in Mick's comments. I guess I just give him the benefit of the doubt not because he's not a jerk, but because I don't think he wants to rub Stevie the wrong way right now. Also, I tend to agree with the person who posted that Mick might have been delicately saying that Stevie didn't want to open for the Eagles. If by daylight and lighting he really meant that Stevie was afraid she'd look bad if the shows started earlier, then I agree that's harsh and a low blow meant to indicate that she's vain, but I'm not really 100% sure that's what he meant.

And I expected the actual concert to end like the video, so when they added Farmer's Daughter, I was shocked and thrilled. Since they did still use the back up musicians, it wasn't actually as stripped down as it looked, but there was just an intimate, spare quality to the performance, with them all standing together on the edge of the stage. Gives me chills to remember.

Michelej1 has always seemed to be a fantastic voice of reason, so I could have been very wrong about my interpretation of some of Mick's statements. Late into the article, there's an interesting comment:
Heading out with the Blues Band reminds Mick of his early days with Fleetwood Mac, long before their transformation into global rock stars packing arenas and stadiums.
"We're not at all plugged into a production, we don't even have a lighting guy," he explains, chuckling. "It's all about playing, and it's freer."
That seems a reference too, to Stevie and/or touring with Mac, but he's entitled to note such differences about performing live with his other bands. Something, though, about how he mentions wanting to work with Joe Walsh, and claims LB might be open to performing as 'Men of Mac'-- it seems like a way of him asserting that with or without SN, he will continue to work and do fine, which is an ok statement to make, in of itself. To specifically mention Joe Walsh and Lindsey- oh, maybe it has nothing to do with Stevie at all.
Back in December, someone who knew, said that Fleetwood Mac was 'always going to be the opening act' and that it wasn't really a 'co-headlining tour', I don't know, either way. I'm still glad SN said 'No' and actually, I do understand why Mick felt it was a great opportunity.
I'm glad things have balanced out, now. At first, most people saw so much to blame SN for in the article, and I didn't see it at all, and maybe was too harsh about Mick. Now, I'm seeing that Michele- and others- have good points that they've brought up here.

No, you definitely could be right. I guess because it's Mick, I just gave him a pass, because after the nineties when they all had their digs at each other, he's been so gracious about everyone and kind of put a nice face on everything, because he wanted to keep the door wide open for future reunions. So, he's been careful not to give offense and I guess that's what made me discount the import of his words.
If someone else had said it (like Lindsey), I'd be positive he meant it in a not-nice way:laugh:.

Eh, the last time I saw Lindsey solo, the first three rows were only about 20% filled, with the front row almost entirely empty (he was playing to about 650- or about half the modest-sized venue's capacity)... he certainly pawed at his guitar enough to make sure everyone knew he was in the zone!!! or whatever. Its just kind of pathetic when dude spends more money on jet fuel than he could even make off the show even if it was a sellout.

Why is that pathetic? He's earned his money, he should do with it what he
wishes. I'm very glad he did the solo tours. Turned out to be one of the best
concerts I've ever seen. He certainly seemed to enjoy it.

Really? I don't think any of the criticism has to do with Stevie's gender. I found the cover story that Mick and Stevie made up about why Sheryl didn't join the band (i.e. had a small child to care for and didn't want to miss mother's day) a bit more disturbing on that level.

Only Phil would know, but when I read what Phil wrote, I think he was referring to some of the earlier comments that were written here about SN in reply to the Mick article posted in this thread.
At first, people replying were pretty upset with Stevie, not sure why, about the Mick article. Some of the angrier comments struck me as misogynistic. Michelej1, one comment in particular stood out, and remains, but I'm glad the tide has shifted.
I like for how for a couple of pages that this turned into a debate about country music. Good music is good music, I would think. The right song or singer can make a person like what they didn't think they did.
The first time I heard Martina McBride was when she sang 'Where Would You Be' and I was blown away- thought she was a cross between Caruso and Streisand. 'Those pipes in country music?- Who knew?' I have a good live dvd by McBride, but I don't buy her cds. So far, I haven't heard her sing anything that's made as much of an impact on me as the first time I heard her.
Stevie, I love most as a rock singer. How I wish she had rocked a lot, a little more, on past albums. Now, I'm happy to accept her sing whatever genre(s) of music she feels best about recording and releasing. I somehow expect her not to sing rock as much, now.
Ageist, realistic, both, or neither? I wonder.
But, I buy anything and everything Stevie puts out there, if it were a cd of polkas, and a dvd of her narrating a documentary about polar bears, I'd probably have both :)
Nikolaj, yes you understood my comments well but as you also point out, this thread appears to have progressed beyond the concerns I had. :)
I am interested in anything Stevie does so I too will support her endeavours, no matter what they may be. That doesn't mean I'll necessarily enjoy the result but I'm open to any possibilities.
PS David, I adore "Circle Dance", always did and always will. I remember the first time I heard the original Bonnie version upon release, I instantly thought of Stevie and fantasised about her one day covering it. It's disappointing that the version she chose to officially release was a duet (nothing against Carlton mind) because I particularly enjoyed her solo takes on it. A gorgeous and insightful song. I'd love her to have a crack at "I Can't Make You Love Me" as well.

I am a Circle Dance worshipper! I was thrilled when she started including it in her set and swooned when I heard it live. I had never heard the original before. And I couldn't agree more about the Vanessa Carlton thing - that version was quite different sounding and I didn't particularly enjoy Vanessa being on it. Much better Stevie solo. When I listen to that song I never listen to the released version, only my live boots.

I think it would be more pathetic and masturbatory if he was raking in millions from FM and not reinvesting it in solo work, just because he knows that the solo work is not going to make him any money.
I get the feeling that the nice hotels and private jet also ensure that he gets the players he wants and doesn't lose them to bigger acts. Judging from the little asides he was making, I think he minded the fact that Taku left him -- at least he did initially. Maybe in the longterm it worked out for the best. I sort of think adding the extra luxuries helped him keep Neale and Brett from picking up work with a bigger act. I think his two solo tours are far less self-indulgent than his FM ventures.
In fact, what upset me most about Mick's recent comments is the fact that Lindsey is purportedly open to corporate gigs where he can continue getting paid for playing GYOW and nothing else for the rest of his life, rather than giving us another round of money-losing solo shows.

I think Jennifer Nettles has that impact on people. They are like, "who is that?" The voice pulls them in.

Do we even know if this was "stevies idea" or did she hear it was happening and then decide to "be involved"? we dont know right.. just what the INTERVIEWER said about what Mick said.
Just that we KNOW shes already worked with Michelle Branch who shes already friends with anyway. and (who i think is awesome by the way. and not totally country . AND i love her songs with SANTANA)
We just need more input.

I have that show on DVD and its awesome!! Very high energy all the way through. I thought her 05 shows, both with and without Henley were some of her best in recent years. She was totally rejeuvenated and looked fabulous.

Exactly. I think someone had the idea to make this album and they approached the band and Mick, Lindsey, and John were like psh **** that, but Stevie was like what eh what the hell, why not? Also, I don't think Mick has his facts right. A "country version of Rumours" eh?? I know Michelle Branch was in The Wreckers, which was kinda country, but she isn't your typical country gal, especially in her solo work. Also, she recorded Say You Love Me... now, I don't know what version of Rumours y'all (I'll bring out my Texas accent for this country thread:laugh:) listen to, but as far as I know, SYLM was not on Rumours, but rather Fleetwood Mac. So maybe it was originally slated as a country Rumours and La Nicks went and there and said "What the hell guys? We already have a Rumours tribute, lets do one with songs from our entire catalogue. And lets not get too carried away with this "country" ****, okay? We don't wanna target such a specific audience, let's widen the scope of this to accommodate not only country fans, but music lovers in general!" And Mick is just unaware of these changes.

I'm in Austin, TX. For some reason Stevie hasn't been here since oh 1986 or something like that. I just moved to Austin tho about 9 months ago, so if she does tour I am sure she will go to Dallas or Houston, which are about 3 hours away. Before living here I lived in west texas which was hours and hours away from Dallas and Houston, so I never had the money to take a trip to go see Stevie.

It's o.k. Don't be mad at yourself. I paid sooooo much money to go to 2 shows in the first 5 rows and I'm still paying lol. Plus I was with someone who brought me down so that didn't help either.

I loved this description of Lady Antebellum in the The Independent. I would guess this would be what a new Rumours would most resemble.

Country music sanitised, buffed, autotuned and Fleetwood Mac'd to within an inch of its life, and not in a good way.
