I have really horrible taste in movies. I'm just putting that out there and letting you guys know I'm aware of it before you judge my choices. It's not that I can't appreciate a "good" movie, but that I like my film to be escapist. I just want something that takes me away to another world. That said:

1. Beauty and the Beast. Yes, the disney version.
2. Catch Me if You Can
3. The Pursuit of Happyness
4. All the President's Men
5. Witness for the Prosecution
6. You've Got Mail

25 is a bit much for me right now 'cause I'm headed out the door. But here's ten. :)

1.) Star Wars.

2.) Return of the Jedi.

3.) Revenge of the Sith.

4.) All About Eve.

5.) Avatar.

6.) Anastasia (Yul Brenner version.)

7.) Kung-Fu Panda (very cute and entertaining).

8.) War of the Worlds (older version from the 50s.)

9.) "The X-Files Movie" (1998).

10.) Kenneth Branaugh's version of Hamlet. (and also his version of Henry V.)

I also just recently saw a great science fiction movie from the 70s called "The Omega Man" starring Charlton Heston. This is the same story as the movie "I Am Legend" which recently came out starring Will Smith. (There was also a version from 1964 starring Vincent Price, called "The Last Man on Earth." - They're all based on a novel called "I Am Legend" by someone named Richard Matheson which has received a lot of attention.)
Anyway I thought the Charlton Heston version was VERY good! The Will Smith version (i.m.o.) didn't really capture the emotional impact of the story. The 1964 version was also pretty good, for similar reasons. But Heston's version blew me away; I felt that it was VERY well-done! :)

First of all, The Man Who Fell To Earth is one of the weirdest movies ever. In a good way, since David Bowie can do no wrong.

Also, Maris, you WOULD like the Virgin Suicides. It's one of my favorites too.

I'm obsessed with film. I see 2+ movies in theatres a week and often drive around the bay area to do it. I'm actually going to 12 different films at the San Francisco International Film Festival within the next two weeks and I'm SO EXCITED.

In no particular order:
1. Stardust Memories (and anything Allen)
2. The Virgin Suicides
3. Stealing Beauty
4. The Hours
5. A Single Man
6. Dead Poet's Society

I love this movie. It was also nominated for best picture, so no reason for embarrassment. I bought it on VHS, DVD, and am eagerly awaiting the Blu-Ray release. I hate the Cocteau version Stevie loves so much. I guess I'm just not that deep.

1. Beauty and the Beast. Yes, the disney version.
6. You've Got Mail
22. Sleepless in Seattle
23. The Holiday

I love the majority of the movies on your list, but these are some highlights:

Beauty and the Beast is amazing. I watched it a couple weeks ago at 2 in the morning and was comparing my life to Belle's. Bahahah pathetic, yes. I love watching Disney movies! After you've grown up a bit, you can see the story a different way than from what you saw as a little kid.

You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle = classic Meg Ryan movies (when Meg Ryan still looked like Meg Ryan).

The Holiday is perfect!! Love the storylines/relationships. I can watch it over and over.

Dani - I LOVE that you included this!

How did this thread pass me by?! I'm doing a film phD and this is one of the questions I always, always get asked... So here's my list! This is a strange list for me. YOu have some of my favorites and some movies I really care about and some I even admire and then you've got some of the worst movies ever made. Fascinating.

Some of the worst movies ever made? I'd hate to see what you'd call Crash, Rain Man, or any Schwarzenegger movie.

Sorry, but did I just read an earlier post that described Some Like It Hot and Casablanca as BAD?!? No, no, no! See, this is what happens with me and these lists, I'd better stop...

I know! It hurts my feeling, I am reeling.

And I love that you included To Die For and The Goonies. They were just outside of my list. :)

You're still on the record as thinking that "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E" are amongst the most abominable man-made creations (let alone movies), right? Just checking :)

Other comedies that have some raunch that are infinitely more funny... Dogma, Election, In Bruges, Best In Show, Kingpin, Office Space, Saved!, The Jerk, Rushmore, Spinal Tap

Some of the worst movies ever made? I'd hate to see what you'd call Crash, Rain Man, or any Schwarzenegger movie.

My list started this thread so that should indicate the movies that I care about. I'm not sure what you mean by those examples: Crash (both of them lol) and Rain Man are bad. Umm... No Schwarzenegger movie would make my top 5000 movies probably but I do enjoy Total Recall. I can't think of any other Awnold movies that I do like, and T2 is one of the worst movies ever made. But I can't tell if you think I would/should or wouldn't/shouldn't like them.

You're still on the record as thinking that "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E" are amongst the most abominable man-made creations (let alone movies), right? Just checking :)

Yes. Wall-E is probably my worst movie-watching experience. Painful. It's all coming back to me like a wave of nausea:

1) the hype that the opening portion is a "silent film" (it's not a return to "silent" film aesthetics just because it's about "characters" that CAN'T talk--silent film is a medium without sound in a world where people CAN verbalize--so pantomime and images express their thoughts/feelings/voices/action/sound while the images in Wall-E EXPRESS nothing--just, literally, garbage; in fact, the movie RELIES--lazily, with no panache--on sound to provide exposition and to explain how/why the humans left Earth)

2) stealing the significance of the GREAT Hello, Dolly!--reducing it to just MORE garbage, cultural detritus, signifying nothing

3) the concept of "love" as programming/pathology rather than the complex progression of desire, projection, identification, selflessness, and spiritual longing in A.I.--in which Spielberg's visionary sci-fi milieu shows how this Desire is manifested in the culture (while Wall-E reduces culture to garbage)

4) the plant!!!! (for a movie whose entire plot hinges on the suitability of life on earth, how the f--- does that plant survive in cold, airless space?)

5) the little-boned fat future of man (the apocalyptic extension of the first half's emphasis on pathology)

6) the completely senseless narrative device of the contradictory directives that the space station computer receives from the same humans (it sends out plant probes but it also is directed to destroy any evidence that may lead to humans repopulating Earth--WTF!? who wrote this script?)

7) Then it turns into Finding Nemo--devolving into chase-scene mayhem, running around (from whom to where? wtf is going on??), without any of animation's (or silent film's!) legacy of chase-scene wit and legibility (see The Simpsons Movie or the films of Buster Keaton/Harold Lloyd, for a breadth of examples)

These are 3 great movies! Saved! especially is an under-rated gem and Mandy Moore is great as Hillary Faye (don't scoff until you see it guys, trust me!)

I haven't seen In Bruges yet but it's on my list because I've bot heard a bad word about it.

I can never make lists like these because I always miss some. On this, I missed Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rock Star (with Mark Wahlberg, shut up, I love it), and Lars and the Real Girl. But I don't want to take any off to make room for them :P
