I'm sure this had been discussed a million times before but...I seriously think this is one of Stevie's most underrated and overlooked released songs. It has every component of a huge hit! The RAL vocals we all love, catchy hook, over-produced 80's sound. Basically, I'm obsessed with this song and I want to know what you guys think about it. One thing I will admit - I could see how some could see it as a little cheesy but in her defense, so are several other songs that were released as singles that ended up being hits. Bottom line - this song could have been a huge hit. Do you agree?

I do like the vocal version better than the LP version & or any outtakes or demos of it better as well.......since RAL isn't like my favorite LP by far.....I like more of what wasn't released vs what was.....(esp Mirror, Mirror as an example)......I know some don't like this song but it is to me one of her best off of the RAL LP/cd......IMO:D

One of my favorite songs of hers, and I've many times mentioned that I feel the song is about her marriage to Kim. When you pick apart the lyrics it seems very obvious.

i just downloaded the 12" Nightmare you posted. Thanks! but the remix i was referring to is a little different and longer at the beginning and end. its the version released on the b-side of the ICW 12" remixes. it opens with the guitar solo/drum/bongos intro and the end is a bit longer...everything else in between is pretty much the same.

These are the same. There was the version on RAL, a minor edit of that same version was on the b-side of the 7" I Can't Wait.
The 12" - or Vocal/Special Remix are the same version, and only apeared on the 12" I Can't Wait single released in the U.S.
There are some unreleased piano demos, a poor-quality outtake, and a master-reel alternate in circulation as well (posted in the master reel thread.
Any other remixes of The Nightmare are fan-made.

Yeah, why would it have been edited on some singles and not on others? It is definitely the SAME remix, but without the intro and full ending. Would one have been US and one UK?
Here's the info on the ICW singles according to NicksFix.com :

I love The Nightmare, as a Stevie fan, but we need to stay objective here. The lyrics are a mess. "So about the moon and the sisters", "i stood with you against the storm", "i'd like to leave you with something warm", "drowning in the sea", "dream" : i say caricature. Let's be realistic, it would have never been a hit.
Still, "blinded by the light of the day", <3.

Since when did having messy lyrics ever prevent a song from being a hit? I'm sure we could all names thousands of lyrics that make no sense yet the song is still a hit. And, as Stevie fans we should know that so many of her lyrics are cryptic and make no sense. That is one of the things I find most endearing about her as an artist. So many things are not literal and don't make sense to us regular people but to her they do make sense.

I really like that she so blatantly references her own material in the lyrics of 'The Nightmare'. I do agree that the likelihood of it being a hit had it been released is slim.

To be clear here, i do love this song. But she's rambling, and redoing songs she's already done : it's a lack of creativity. We, fans, know that Stevie's singing about her own life (probably within Fleetwood Mac), and we know that there's a story behind. But most people who bought singles back then would have thought "what the fukc is that?", or "the same ol' dreams-crap", or "she's definitely a witch"... Some Become Strangers, though she didn't right it, would have been a better single, imo. :)

I think the lyrics to "The Nightmare" are brilliant. A less talented writer would have merely said, "Oh, this love affair is a nightmare, and it should never have been..." But the brilliance of her writing is that, on its face, it makes no sense. But upon closer examination, if you "read between her lines" or "listen through her," it makes sense. This song is all about Mick and about something that went down around the time of the Tusk album ("ivory morning"), so she worked in references to songs on Tusk. I was under the impression that they had ended their affair prior to the making of Tusk, but based on this song, apparently that wasn't the case. Anyway, I think it was a clever device she used for dropping hints about the song's true meaning.

Correction, "DROWNDING in the sea". LOL.
"The Nightmare" is an OK album cut but I agree, it is not top 40 material. Outside of the issues with the lyrics, the melody doesn't really have much of a hook.

and there's no chorus??!! i love it but for that reason alone it wouldn't have been a hit! also... it's too long for radio..esp top40 in those days...even anything near 5 minutes wouldn't be considered for a single!

Okay... I am probably saying something I will regret later on. But here goes...
Why are you following Stevie Nicks? You have gone on record as saying she hasn't put out any good music in 27 years. I don't know about you, but if it was me, I would not be following someone who put out a couple of decent records and then has been putting out crap for the past 27 years. Chances are, with that kind of track record, this recording artist is not worth your time. Why bother?
Look, I realize we are all entitled to our opinions, and we all have the opportunity to express them openly here. However, in my opinion, your chronic negativity about Stevie is not particularly meaningful for people who have a more broad appreciation for Stevie's works- both older and more recent. Let's face it- in your estimation, Stevie's great albums were a fluke and she is a mediocre artist based on her track record. Chances are, if you haven't liked anything she has put out in the past 27 years, you will not like anything she puts out in the next 27 years. Maybe it's time to just let go...

Ok.......number 1......I have gone on record apologizing for my negative Attitude. I don't set out to bash, and I know it sounds like I hate her but I DON'T. I am a fan wheather anybody believes it or not.
Number 2.....I Never said she was a mediocre Artist. If anything, I am BEYOND frustrated that I have not liked her in so long. Cause she was Brilliant and I'm angry that album after album is a letdown because I know she can do better. I KNOW IT!!!!!
number 3.....This is a message board. There's gonna be criticism thrown out. I'm just not shy about delivering.
So I don't know how else to put it, Maybe i won't say a thing.

I've always liked "The Nightmare" because I've always heard it as an account of her brief marriage. Here is my intepretation of the lyrics:
The Nightmare
Thrown down through the arms of sleep
She fell through the ivory morning
Deep into the waters
Of the one she called love
She paled in the wake
Of what some call a dream
But, you cannot know a dream
Till you've known the nightmare
This is simply setting up the story, the "ivory morning" meaning the morning of the wedding. As she mentioned in "Sara" she was about to drown in the so called sea of love. However this would not turn out at all as she thought it might.
When I stood with you against the storm
And I tried once again
Well, I said, "I'd like to leave you
With something warm"
How many times
Drowning in the sea
Drowning
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But, the nightmare was not over
Still some call that a dream
The nightmare...the nightmare
Stevie's best friend Robin was married to Kim Anderson. After Robin died, Stevie and Kim leaned on each other for support. She "stood with him against the storm". She felt that the two of them could get thru this together. They then decided they should get married so she could fill in for Robin. No one supported her in this idea. That's when things went bad.
Well, you cannot know a dream
When you turn away
You don't know
You'll never care
The night is not your friend
And you have not had her
And when the nightmare ends
But, you never understand
When you're gone
She wakes up calling out
Oh, calling out
As children may cry as she will
Here she is saying that no one thought this was a good idea but none of them understood what Stevie and Kim were going thru. Stevie was having a tough time dealing with the loss of her friend, and no one except Kim could even begin to understand what she was going thru. Stevie has always said she is a night person, now she was alone and freaking out.
Anytime...oh, anywhere
Blinded by the light of the day
She has known the nightmare
She went into this with blinders on. The whole thing seemed like a great idea. She was wrong.
So about the moon and her sisters
How dare he take them prisoner
Well, if she had flung out her heart against him
Then in all of her wisdom
Oh, well that was a mystery
In an interview about her marriage she said that Kim wouldn't let Stevie out of his sight. She was working on the "Wild Heart" album but he didn't want to leave the house. He wanted her all for himself. "The moon and her sisters" refers to Stevie and Lori and Sharon. Kim didn't want to share Stevie with them.
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But the nightmare was not over
Somewhere in her ancient ways
She walks through the night
And then she tries to get through the day
Some will never know
Or share any kind of dream
Once Stevie saw this side of Kim she "woke up" from the fog she was in and knew that for both of their sakes, she had to get away from him. Stevie has said that Kim started calling her "Robin" and basically wanted her to BE Robin. She knew it was time to get out.
The nightmare
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the world
The nightmare
She wants him to fight...anytime, anywhere
She wants him to stand up
She wants him to win
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the real world
Blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the light
She was blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the day
So she realizes this is not what either of them need, it's time to leave. She wants nothing but the best for him but she can't be with him. This is not the world for her. She again excuses the whole thing by saying she was not thinking clearly and was "blindly in love".
Again, this is my theory of what the song is about and it's based solely on interviews with Stevie about her marriage.

I don't think "The Nightmare" could have been a hit. It doesn't really have much of a hook to it, and it lacks a chorus.
Other than the three releases, the other songs on Rock A Little that might have been hits are probably "If I Were You" and "Some Become Strangers". Those both 'sound' like they could have been singles, whereas everything else on the album has something too esoteric about it to make it on the radio.

In July 2006, Reprise issued a press release announcing Reflections: The Very Best Of Stevie Nicks which was to be released in October 2006. Of course, this was canceled and became Crystal Visions instead the following March 2007. However, on the UK track listing for Reflections was "The Nightmare" (12-inch Remix) amongst the songs on the CD.
So, maybe it had been intended at one point to be single.

It sure would be nice to get this on CD, finally after all these years.
Even a one-off CD, sort of like Sarah MacLachlan's "Rarities, B-Sides and other Stuff" would be great, and could include:
*Real Tears
*Mirror Mirror
*The Nightmare (Vocal Remix)
*The I Can't Wait mixes that have not been issued on CD
*The single edits of Nightbird and HAEWAFY (and probably other tracks I'm forgetting)
*Rock A Little - Extended mix from the UK 12" I Can't Wait
*The Talk To Me alternate mix from the Time/Life It's Only Rock 'n Roll 1985/86 compilation
*God's Garden
*Inspiration
*Crying In The Night - Single mix with electric guitar
*One or more of the Tracey Young Edge of 17 Mixes that were completed and then cancelled
*The Live at Red Rocks tracks that were released in Europe on TOSOTM CD singles, but not in the U.S.
*Crystal, If You Ever Did Believe and Touched By An Angel from the Practical Magic and Sweet November soundtracks
That's 18 tracks right off the bat. There are probably more.
Edit: Two more: The download-only bonus tracks that were offered for the Soundstage pre-sale
Also, a live cut of I Need to Know - on CD finally, would be great.
Also, the European-released extended remixes of Long Way To Go and Rooms On Fire
The single edit of Leather & Lace
At Last from Stormy Weather

I completely agree... would be incredibly cool! Even if only they had it as a limited edition/limited number of pressings, which would make it a must-have for fans (and of course a smart business decision for the record company as they could easily charge a premium price).

Back in 1995, when I started my Stevie fanzine, her management then was very open with me about what Stevie was doing and they had planned. In January 1995, her manager told me that there was to be a Spring 1995 release of some Stevie rarities, 10 or 12 songs, while she worked on her new album which was due in Late 1995 (wild, huh?). This Rarities album was to contain, PER HER MANAGEMENT:
"Sleeping Angel"
"Violet And Blue"
"Gold"
"Blue Lamp"
"Inspiration"
"Playing In God's Garden"
AND...
"Running Through The Garden"
"Love Don't Fail Me Now"
"Just Like Jesse James" (NOT the Cher hit, but a song Stevie wrote!!!)
This was in a phone call between me and her manager.
Well, this morphed later in the Spring, when Lifetime's very, very first Intimate Portrait ~ of Carly Simon ~ was a huge ratings success, and Carly's live album from it became a blockbuster in 1995! Stevie was now going to go that route, with her own Lifetime Intimate Portrait special and concert album, with her album of all-new material in Early 1996.
Also in 1995, Stevie and Meat Loaf were recording a duet for the Carole King Tribute album, but it either was not recorded or just not released. Stevie ended up firing these guys, and then bought out her Atlantic contract with only one record owed them (eventually to be Enchanted), got new management, a new record contract with Reprise/WB, and worked on her new songs in 1996.
So, we almost got that Rarities album ~ and an album somewhat like Soundstage as well, back in 1995.

:woohoo: This would have been so cool. It's too bad it never materialized.

*Crystal, If You Ever Did Believe and Sweet November from the Practical Magic and Sweet November soundtracks
The single edit of Leather & LaceI so agree with this post. I wish so wish she'd release stuff like this. She really has alot that could be released even if she doesn't ever record anything new. Besides all the other outtakes /extended versions etc. I'd say if something like this was released I'd put some 'rare' outtake photos with the package as well since these songs would've been recorded at different times in her career. Missed opportunity again I say. I'd also love a 'live' various songs compliation too. Different from Soundstage in that it goes through all stages of Stevie's career and different songs please. If it can't include Mac and just solo than I'd say something rare live from BD (say Blue Lamp) etc. Just think of how special that could be too. I could keep going with this post. I did post before about The Nightmare song and I still love it esp the Vocal version. Since RAL hasn't ever been one of my favorites but some songs I love. I also like how she mentions her other songs in the lyrics of this song. :D

Is this the version that is the b-side to the I Can't Wait single? I haven't spun that in years.
No this is a totally different mix (and different vocals)...wonder if this is the single mix that was never released?

I don't have an issue with the officially released versions. It's the demo that drives me to distraction.
There was a period of...I don't know...six months or so, I guess, where I would take all my Stevie/Lindsey/FM treasure down to the basement of my (then) new house and listen to everything with rapt attention. Including demos that were shared by some of the incredibly generous folks that were on the Ledge about a decade or so ago.
I'm listening and loving most of it and then comes this endless, monotonous, rambling song (much like this post!) and...ick. So, of course, I ended up listening to it rather than fast-forwarding, probably about five times.
Now, I'd rather be strapped to an anthill and listen to Docklands and Sister Honey on an endless loop than listen to one minute of the demo of Nightmare (I confess that's not totally fair since I love Docklands;-)

I have a lot of these on UK singles, back when I worked at tower records and then collecting singles thru the 90's I gathered a lot of these tracks on CD...I have since down loaded a lot of it to my Ipod, but I sure would like to find a clear copy of "Mirror,Mirror" from the cassingle of B.D...actually I have the radio remix edit of Maybe and Blue...from the street angel promos..."No body was into stevie then"...

See - now youi've got me thinking what (Cher's) Just Like Jesse James would have sounded like had Stevie done it! I actually really like the song. Along with Save Up All Your Tears it'a real high point of Cher's late 80-early 90s work.
