So I've been thinking about how much I've been looping Illume on my playlist lately. I remember when Say You Will came out, I wanted to like that song very much... but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. Perhaps because it was a bit avant garde. Perhaps because I found John McVie's bass line to be a bit hip hopish. I don't know. All I do know is that lately, I think it's one of the best songs Stevie's written in the past 20 years. Definitely her best Mac song since Gypsy.

Have there been any songs for y'all that you didn't like when an album was initially dropped, but came to LOVE later? :woohoo:

Come. I hated this song until about a year ago, maybe it just rubbed me the wrong way ;)

Also, Lindsey's songs on Tusk are much better now rather than years ago when I first heard them.

Anthony awesome picture,

and I hated Sweet Girl when I first heard it, I thought it was her "reply" to Free Fallin'
but after I listened to it a coupe of times I really started to like it.

Same thing with Battle of the Dragon, I never gave it a chance because I couldn't get into the beginning of it, but after I listened to the whole thing I actually realized it was pretty rockin.

Then there was After the Glitter Fades, which for two years I couldn't get over the "country" sound of it, but now I listen to it for its lyrics, and I really like it
I think a lot of her songs are like that, when something happens in your life and the song takes on a new meaning, you have a different appreciation for it

Thanks! And I am with you on all three of these. I just recently got into BOTD because of the intro music, I thought it sounded silly, but now the song means a lot to me. And ATGF has a very country feel to it, but I like when she adds a country touch to her songs. To me, that is why That's Alright is so good. As for The Highwayman......

I've also come to love pretty much all of the album Rock A Little, I once thought it was pure '80s trash. Same with the entire album of Tango In The Night. It's been long enough since the '80s now that these albums are kitschy and fun, and lots of the elements of these albums are being used again in current pop music (albeit, in a retro way).

Battle of the Dragon. I really don't know why I ever disliked this song? It's now one of my favorites.

And the majority of SYW. I didn't listen to it for like 2 years because I couldn't stand it. Now I love Running Through the Garden and Miranda.

Thousand Days.
I hated that song for so many years until a few months back. Strangely it is now one of my favorite songs.

It took me one full year to like the song Talk To Me. I hated the fact that Stevie, a songwriter, would release a lead off single written by somebody else, especially when she always said her reason for making solo albums was because being in FM stiffled her musical output.

Plus I felt that I Can't Wait would have been better as the first single. Especially because it took forever for RAL to come out. It was delay after delay back then.

I didn't like 'Nothing Ever Changes' in the past, but in the last year, I have really started to enjoy it. It's strange how something can sound so different to you after so many years.

Yes.

The song "Say You Will". I did not like this song (and EFO) when the album came out. I ended up really liking "Say You Will" (but not EFO). Partly because I saw it live so many times, but also because the Chris Lord-Alge remix was so much better than the album version. I like it so much now that sometimes I catch myself unconsciously doing the "lasso dance" while I'm singing along in the car!.

Oh, I can so relate to that!!!! I still don't like the song. Maybe because it's practically the same song as the other one that Chas Sanford guy wrote that summer... "Missing You". It's the same freaking track with a different melody and words written over it.

All of TISL improved for me with age. Took me about 2 years before I could appreciate their luster.

I loved TISL from the start, but Bombay Sapphires has REALLY gotten better over the years to me! :D

It's the best song on the album IMO.

I think Thrown Down is without a doubt the best on the album. And then Destiny Rules and Illume. But to me, the whole album is just amazing.

I can't help it, I still have a bad taste in my mouth regarding what Thrown Down morphed into. I LOVED the demo when I first heard it in about '00... then LOVED the "wall of sound" version I probably heard in '02? When Say You Will emerged, I was so disappointed at how skeletal and flat Thrown Down had become :distress:. Lyric wise, I think it's one of her most poignant, grounded, and strong songs. I just prefer this version, I guess:

I definitely agree about Destiny Rules and Illume, though. Easily her best Mac songs since Gypsy and Straight Back :D.

The Other Side Of The Mirror and Street Angel in general. I hated that the woman who sang like a bird now sounded like...that. The difference from the White Album era to the OSOTM era is really incredible, and at first, I felt very volatile towards that.

Now, however, both albums are starting to grow on me. I lovelovelove The Dance, Trouble In Shangri-La and Say You Will, so I think they helped me grow used to Stevie's changing voice.

The OSOTM has some interesting songs on it that at first just sounded awful, and while Street Angel does have it's truly awful moments (Stevie Nicks should not sing about a laundromat!) it also has some really catchy songs - Greta in particular is one of my favourites.

I'm still not keen on Rock A Little though. Although occasionally a song from it appears on shuffle and makes me go "Ooh"

I agree about 'Thrown Down'. It should have been released before 'Say You Will'. Definitely a missed opportunity.

Usually if I start to like a song it is because I can envision in my mind how it COULD have sounded if alterations were made. For example, "Nothing Ever Changes" needs to be rid of the blaring synths during the chorus, and have the hefty guitar from the intro put in its place.

Agreed! I love Nothing Ever Changes because it is so raw sounding and I think it would have been amazing live, but the chorus is was too over produced.

Both songs are too ballad(y). The first single should have been Everybody Finds Out and the 2nd should have been Running Through The Garden or Destiny Rules.Stevie needs to have more of a rock-n-roll vibe on the radio IMO.

For me, songs come and go- sometimes I never notice a particular one, then all of a sudden it really rings, and vice versa!

"Ghosts" - the way the song swings into the bridge - very, very pretty!

EDIT: OSOTM the album in general...i would always listen to bits and pieces, but it's truly growing on me!

I have to say the entire OSOTM album. I never liked it..... and suddenly it just grew on me. I love "ooh my love"..... I have that one in my mp3 player constantly!!

The first time I heard this song was the SYW version b/c back in 2003 I had just started getting really into Stevie and had not started collecting demos. I was not crazy about the song and am still not to this day. I just cannot feel passionate hearing my goddess sing about a barricade! Something about that is just wrong and I'm always picturing orange cones blocking the road. However I do recognize that many, many people love it.

God's Garden, as the inevitable fate of death comes closer and closer! Especially when the song is over, and you realized you wasted 6 minutes of your life.

And Sister Honey. I think one might lose some of that jet plane enthusiasm when hearing this song in their 80s.

Silver Springs means more to me each version and each time I hear it. Back when it was the B side, it was nothing but Country Hick stuff. It has a deep , love , heartbreak expression now that I truly appreciate. Well written and beautifully sung!

I don't really mind the word "barricade" but I always want to say "hurricane" by mistake. Even though I know the correct word, my brain is always replacing it.

Stevie's songs that I always loved from first listen still sound great to me, and ones I didn't care for haven't improved a lot for me over the years. I may be less madly in love with 'Seven Wonders' than I was in 1987, but I still like it a good deal. Oh wait. I answered the question totally wrong. Songs 'better for you with age'...
Ok, I always have liked "Frozen Love" a lot, but now, this year, it's about the most I have ever loved the song, it's more 'serious' to me. Of course, it has always been a seriously brilliant song. Just now, I can abstain from adding a warbling "BRRRR" at the end after every refrain of 'Frozen Love' and especially the last 'frozen love' in the song...It used to make me laugh a lot (and others quite a bit, too) whenever I played the song and just had to sing "Brrrr" with as much vibrato/reverb as I was able.
Now, I think I'd slap the kid I was silly, if he/I dared to 'brrrr!' to such a great song!!
