View Full Version : What old demos do you want Stevie to dig out for her new record?

So if the rumours are true that Stevie is making a new album, chances are she will pull out some of her old demos and record a few for the album. Which ones do you want??
My choices:
Lady From The Mountains- I love this song and I heard she was talking about recording it back in 2007.
She Loves Him Still- I agree with that earlier thread where we talked about Dave Stewart being able to produce an awesome version of it.
All The Kings Horses- Amazing song and I think it would go well with her vocals now a days.
I Call You Missing- I can't ever enjoy this demo because of the poor quality, but I think Stevie could record a kick ass version of it and give it a very rock sound.
Mabel Normand, City of Hope, and Mistaken Love- I really love all 3 of these songs a lot, but the raw quality of the demos makes them even more amazing. I doubt she would do any of these 3, and even if she did I don't know if a new version could ever compare to the demos, but I would still love to hear a new and fully produced version of any of the 3.

I would love to hear "Prettiest Girl in the World" redone. She actually mentioned that one in an interview not that long ago..Love that demo!

If You Were My Love: That's my #1 since Smile At You was recorded (not exactly to my tastes, either. Oh well...)
My Heart: Great little song.
Other favs that would be out of context these days:
Melacine: Fun little song, but it's just not 'current Stevie' compatible IMO.
Forest Of The Black Roses: Ditto.
Cecelia: Double Ditto.
Space Needle: Simply too dark, and it's way outta context since it's been 16 years+ since Stevie was in rehab. Coulda been a real tour de force on TISL...
Joan Of Arc: I realize it was a B-side, but damn I woulda loved this one on an album.
Not Make Believe: Ditto.

^ Time doesn't matter with Space Needle. It's a reflective song.
Obviously, Secret Love and Poor Me need to be recorded. Stevie's finest moments. ;)

Hi Louie! Can you please explain to me what you mean by "out of context these days". Maybe I'm interpreting what you are saying incorrectly but to me music is timeless. You can always put a new twist on an old song and/or make it more modern sounding. Didn't she do this on the TISL album? I mean unless you are saying something that's like totally politically irrelevant or something most any of Stevie's songs could be released today.

Howdy! :D To me, songs like Forest Of The Black Roses, Melacine, and Cecelia are a bit... I dunno... callow. They're cute and thoroughly Stevie... but Stevie's such a different person these days that her singing them would be totally irrelevant. To me she's even a different person than she was while she was recording Trouble In Shangri La. There was such a dynamic shift in her post 9/11. I just think she'd feel silly digging some of those old songs up... and might even look it too. It was a young girl who wrote those songs... and now she's a much harder, technically elderly, woman.

Bob Dylan wouldn't resort to dredging up songs that weren't worthy then, aren't worthy now.
Hence why you don't see him re-releasing his old albums with a ton of "bonus tracks" that weren't worthy of inclusion at the time.

Gotcha! That totally makes sense and there could very well be some truth to what you are saying but at the same time she's still the same person, just older. These songs are part of her history and that never changes. It's like somebody looking back at their diary - of course you're not the exact same person but those experiences make you the person you are today. Whether she's 25 or 65 they are still her songs and always will be. "Timeless is the creature who is wise".
OMG did you just use Stevie and elderly in the same sentence ? I'm obviously having issues today with the whole Stevie aging thing.

Yes, but there are certain things that are meant to be left in the past and not revisited. For instance, people we dated in high school perhaps. That's part of our collective whole that defines us... but just trying to revisit that relationship today would be absurd, and likely disastrous.
And yeah, it's tough seeing my goddess Stevie getting older too. But that's ok, even when she's 132 and flying by in her rocket powered wheelchair she'll still be FABULOUS.

I completely agree, but this is Stevie Nicks we are talking about here! Other than BuckinghamNicks there hasn't been an album of hers where she used completely new material. And some of her songs weren't worthy at the time because she just didn't like how they sounded then, but what is wrong with her changing the sound? And many of her songs were "worthy" but couldn't be put on a Fleetwood Mac album because she had a few other songs they felt worked better. If you can only choose 3 songs, it doesn't mean the 4th song is "unworthy". Sometimes its just not the right moment. I don't want completely all old stuff, but revitalizing an old song or two and taking them where she wants them now would be fine with me! Granted, when her new album does come out you will hear me bitch that there were only X amount of songs and there were this many that were old so technically there were only this many new songs!
I musta been thinking of Ricky... my bad! :o

LOL That cracked me up... I just watched that part of the doc. last night...
Although I love all those old demos and would really like to see some of them get officially released... I almost don't want her to recreate them... They should stand on their own as is I wouldn't want her to mess with them... leave those for a remaster or something... I agree, either write something new, or at least redo something we haven't heard if that's possible...

1. 'Space Needle'- because it's so excellently written. I think Dave could produce an awesome version of it, though I had assumed LB would really want Fleetwood Mac to do the song. Still, I think it belongs on Stevie's solo cd, too good to hold it back any longer. It will impress critics and public alike, that song, I'd think.
2. 'What Has Rock N Roll Ever Done For You'-- because Stevie is great on fast songs. It doesn't have 'too' many lyrics- though I love love 'Fall From Grace' I think you kind of can't sing along to it, with the complex, many lyrics. Of course, I'd rather hear Stevie singing than an audience, but I think the lyrics were too tough to memorize for the song to become a 'hit'
3. 'Jimmy Come On Back'-- the fast song reason, again. Love Stevie on a fast pop-rock song.
4. 'China Doll' was a gorgeous demo/out-take
5. 'She Loves Him Still' was an astonishingly gorgeous demo or out-take, and she included 4 lines of the lyrics from the song on a page inside of her 'Enchanted' box set liner notes, so that means she intends to put it on record, doesn't it? So, now's a great time.
6.. Because I love the following 60's song and don't think she will ever perform it more than the one time she did unless she records it, I'd love for her to record 'Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart'..Waddy must still have the charts for it. Falls under 'fast song' again :)
-- I have to say I only know of one version of 'City of Hope' and it just dragged for me, so I kind of hope she doesn't record it. There are lots of songs I've heard that I liked a lot more- I'll include 'Forest of the Black Roses' and I do love her '24 Karat' demo, though I figured that one never got put on record because it kind of has a Holland-Dozier-Holland riff that comes in and out of the song, but IF she covers their 'Itchin In My Heart' maybe that could segue into '24 Karat (Gold?)' with a note of inspiration from HDH in the liner notes. If that was the reason, that it sounded too HDHish, give em a piece of it, why not? Actually 'Jimmy Come On Back' sounds inspired by HDH too, to me. But, Stevie has said she's an old r&b singer, so I'd love to hear some 60s styled Motown kind of songs on the new album- the one remake of 'Itchin In My Heart' and her two own self-penned 'Motown-esque' songs, 'Jimmy Come On Back' and '24 Karat'..
I'm just so happy she has 4 songs finished already with Dave. I think she will keep the cd to 11 tracks, at the most, so she could be finished before June!
P.S. I thought 'Joan of Arc' was pretty dreadful content wise, though it did have a nice 'sound' to it. The chorus of it was terrible and too repeated (just my opinion, of course, go on loving it, those of you who do, as you should!)
But yikes I don't want it on the new cd :)

And I think she should rerecord "Sleeping Angel" with an arrangement closer to the demo. The Jimmy iovine version lost all the feeling.

Yes, but shouldn't it be the person whose past it is who makes that decision? Like the songwriter, not the fans?
Especially since Stevie adapts her older songs to be relevent to her current life. For example, Planets and Goodbye Baby. (Granted, Goodbye Baby could have had a better musical arrangement, but it's still a good song.)
And sometime she doesn't adapt older songs, and leaves them the same. I have to believe that when she doesn't change them, they are still relevent to her as they were originally written.

So what's the deal with everyone loving Mable Normand so much? I hadn't even heard of this one until a couple months ago (I've since listened to it on Buckinghamnicks.net). It's definitely unusual vocal and song structure for Stevie. Is that the allure? I'm just curious as to the cult following of this one...

Oh, ABSOLUTELY! As long as Stevie wants to record the song, still likes it, still thinks she can make it current, and enjoys recording it... then by all means! I actually have a little list of fav demos. I was just thinking about comments from Stevie the past few years that she just wouldn't want to revisit some of those songs... that's all. :wavey:

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but as for myself, there wasn't anything special about it when I first heard it but a few days later it was stuck in my head and soon became one of, if not my favorite Stevie demo ever. The demo itself is very raw and the lyrics are amazing and they relate very much to Mabel Normand, but also to Stevie herself. "She did her work, but her heart was quietly crying." "He says 'Don't give up.' I ask him, 'What are you talking about?' I said, 'Things are not the same, since you've been gone Rome burned down... and it's still all the same.'" "You and your friends are at odds and you are not winning. Why does someone always have to win?" "And I learned to say the words, 'Well, just whose side are you on anyway?'" "So continue on your destructive road." "She fought a losing battle, one day at a time. She might even make it thru tomorrow, maybe even another show. Natural in her beauty, I guess you could say she just unapproachable." Amazing. Give it a few listens, it will grow on you.

I love "Lady from the Mountain", but I don't think her current voice would do it justice.
Maybe "All the Beautiful Worlds" or "Sanctuary", though.
As for "She Still Loves Him", maybe if she tried it with the soft vocal from "It's Only Love", it could work.
I'd like to hear a better release of "Smile at You" - the vocal was fine on SYW, so I think she can do it.
I think she could still rock "The Dealer" or "Baby Doll", so they would probably be my first choices.
