Exactly, and God only knows what it cost them to rent that Bel Air mansion for 18 months for the Say You Will album. My guess is over a half million dollars total for the house alone... and that didn't even include equipment, electricity, managers/assistants/attorneys fees/et al.

I'd do it, as long as I got my name listed in the "producer" credits of the liner notes.

Not unrelated to this discussion. (http://survivingthegoldenage.com/interview-fred-schneider-of-the-b-52s/)
We’ve mentioned the B-52s a couple of times. What’s your future plans with them?
We recorded a show in Australia for a live album. Other than that, we had a remix album; I don’t know what the hell happened with that. We got really shafted by the record company we had in Europe because they just fell apart right after our record came out. It’s our first new record in 16 years and EMI tanks. I don’t see how we do a new record the way we do them. We have to all fly to the same place and then write. We pay for the studio ourselves and then you can always download it for free…what’s the point? Our last record broken even and that’s it. It’s our first new record and we think it’s one of our best.
So you’re skeptical if there will ever be a new full length from you guys?
I really can’t say. It would be great but what’s the point of putting out a new record if no one buys it? All these people think music should be free; maybe they should go to work for free.
Have you given any thought to the new music model Radiohead pioneered with “pay what you want” downloads?
I’m not sure. I think most people probably would say “I think I’ll just pay a penny”. I don’t know how that worked for them.
No, I’d rather work with the Superions because we do everything digital. We use Protools and its easy. With the B-52’s, we do need a studio, we need an engineer, we all need to fly down, we need to rent cars, we need to pay for hotels. We still use Protools but we still need to be there to write. We don’t really write on the road.
You know, I shouldn’t say “we’re not gonna do another full length”. You never know. We might do some covers or things like that but right now we’re gonna concentrate on the live album coming out and make sure that’s really good.

Boy, that was lucky - FM decides to record a new album just as LB needs a rental house that will double as a recording studio while his home is being renovated...*cough* write-off *cough* :wavey:

Fleetwood Mac doesn't need money- they have plenty. It's a creative issue.

 Exactly. And Lindsey (and Mick for that matter!) has proved it doesn't take a million dollars, like it has FM in the past, to make an album.
Anyway, I think I've funded enough of the Mac's extravagant lifestyle already.

But to the B52s point, is it because it is too expensive to get them all in one place for the amount of time it takes to write and record new music (travel, lodging, amenities, recording facilities)? In other words, the B52s aren't willing to give up their lifestyle and preferred methods of working (unlimited studio time) because they are THAT rich and famous, just not rich enough to afford such luxuries.
Or is it, as many have said here, that the Mac could afford everything they'd want/need but just don't care enough about making more music to even consider a relatively minor sacrifice. In other words, the Mac is worth THAT much more $$$ than the B52s, but don't have the desire?

Umm, I think I've already been funding their albums for years by buying about fifteen million concert tickets, multiple copies of albums, cassettes, cds, multiple sizes of the same concert T's, tourbooks, etc.

Even though I'm a fan, I can't imagine the B52s ever got really rich from their record sales. Rock Lobster and Love Shack probably keep them pretty comfortable but I can't imagine they've ever been in a mansion-buying position.
As for the Mac, I think Stevie doesn't think it's worth it because it won't sell in the way she's used to. I personally think it's an ego thing more than a monetary thing (because honestly, they don't need the money). And yes I'm singling out Stevie because Lindsey and Mick have both released albums, for pure love of doing it, knowing they wouldn't be big sellers.
Creative differences comes into it too, they all probably feel too old to go through the stress, arguments and compromises that goes in to making a new album.
Oh, I am pretty sure the B52s made a killing from Cosmic Thing and "Love Shack," which was a monster hit. I know Fred Schneider has a decent apartment in New York and a modest house in the Hamptons (he leered at me in the locker room at Sag Harbor Gym recently... gross!! ), yet he doesn't seem to work all that frequently. So I would say he is most definitely independently wealthy, if not exactly living large in the Diddy sense. Kate Pierson owns a small hotel in upstate New York, so I would imagine the Cosmic Thing money had something to do with that.
What I don't understand about FM is why they don't just record at Lindsey's house. It won't cost a thing. There's a trailer out back where Mick could sleep and I would assume John and Stevie do not live too far away. Since they are not the type of band to enlist gazillions of guest musicians and vocalists, it's not like they need some kind of large setup. Let's face it- the reason why they don't record is because Stevie and Lindsey simply just won't work together unless they are making bank, and recording/releasing albums these days has become a zero-sum game. To this day I seriously doubt any of them saw a single penny in residuals from SYW.

I have to wonder if they're able to secure a record deal which would suit their terms. After all, they always require HUGE advances so they can rent mansions/chateaus and such for extended times to record. The last time they recorded an album in under a year was 1975, too. I just imagine them trying to pitch their "needs" to a record company these days, and totally being scoffed at. I can't imagine that either Warners or FM really made much (if any) money from SYW... and the business has deteriorated in leaps and bounds since (and their record buying fans are dwindling yearly as well). I just don't think it makes economic sense for them to make another album. It'd have to be something they do for the love of the craft... something they haven't done in the past 30 years.

If the love is gone, then there is no point to a new album. But don't they love me enough to go through it all? :wavey:
