So what has you shutting your eyes tight, or screaming for momma in the theater or in front of the tv set?
To be honest, gore fests don’t faze me at all. I could watch something like ‘The Exorcist’ or the more recent ‘The Crazies’ for example, and have a good chuckle.
Here’s one film I think that was pretty eerie. It’s a 1960’s movie I saw on tv called ‘The Haunting’.
Basically, a bunch of investigators stay over at a supposedly haunted house to test the truth of its reputation. In one scene (I’m typing this from memory so I hope I got it right) two women (actresses Julie Harris and Claire Bloom) are cowering in bed in the dark as they hear very loud banging noises on their door from outside made by some unknown force. Anyways, after it quiets down, one of the ladies tells the other that she feels safer with her friend holding her hand. The other woman has a look of puzzlement on her face and answers – “but that’s not my hand you’re holding!” Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
‘The Haunting’ was later remade with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones but it sucked. It was filled with special effects leaving nothing to the imagination. What’s scary is what you don’t see, like in the original version.
On that same note, ‘The Blair Witch Project’ was pretty creepy to me too. No gore or CGI at all, just the power of suggestion.

Videodrome.
Purely because of how damn true it is. That the TV gets inside your head and destroys you. Considering that this film was made in 1983, it's so damn creepy.
Basically:
Max Renn (James Woods) is the president of CIVIC-TV, a sleazy Toronto UHF television station specializing in sensationalistic programming. Displeased with his station's current lineup, Renn is on a seemingly endless quest for something that isn't so "soft" and will "break through" to a new audience.
One morning Renn is summoned to the clandestine office of Harlan, who operates CIVIC-TV's pirate satellite dish which can pirate broadcasts from as far away as Asia. Harlan shows Renn "Videodrome," a plotless television show apparently being broadcast out of Malaysia, which depicts the brutal torture and eventual murder of anonymous victims in a bizarre, reddish-orange chamber. Believing this to be the future of television— (staged) snuff TV—Renn orders Harlan to begin pirating the show.
Appearing on a talk show, Renn defends his station's programming choices to Nicki Brand (Debbie Harry), a sadomasochistic psychiatrist, and Professor Brian O'Blivion, a pop-culture analyst and philosopher who will only appear on television if his image is broadcast into the studio, onto a television, from a remote location. O'Blivion hijacks the interview and delivers a speech prophesying a future in which television supplants real life.
Renn dates Nikki, who is sexually aroused when Renn shows her an episode of Videodrome and coaxes him into having sex with her while they watch it. Renn goes once again to Harlan's office, where Harlan informs him the signal delay which caused it to appear to be coming from Malaysia was a ploy by the broadcaster. In fact, Videodrome is being broadcast out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Renn tells Nikki of his discovery and she excitedly goes to Pittsburgh to try and audition for the show.
When Nikki fails to return to Toronto, Renn contacts Masha, and asks her to help him find out the truth about Videodrome. Through Masha, Renn learns that not only is the footage in Videodrome not faked, but Videodrome is the public "face" of a political ideology movement with unspecified but apparently violent goals. Masha further informs Renn that Brian O'Blivion knows about Videodrome.
Max tracks down O'Blivion's office to The Cathode Ray Mission, a mission where homeless individuals are provided food, shelter, and clothing, and encouraged to engage in marathon sessions of television viewing. Renn discovers the mission is run by O'Blivion's daughter, Bianca. Bianca tells Renn these are side-effects from having viewed Videodrome, which is in fact the carrier of a malicious broadcast signal that causes the viewer to develop a malignant brain tumour. Brian O'Blivion helped to create it as part of his vision for the future, but when he found out it was to be used for malevolent purposes, he attempted to stop his partners; they used his own invention to kill him. In the year before his death, O'Blivion recorded tens of thousands of videos, which now form the basis of his television appearances.
Afterwards, Renn takes refuge on a derelict boat in an abandoned harbour, where Nikki appears to him on television. She tells him he has weakened Videodrome, but in order to completely defeat it, he has to "leave the old flesh." The television then shows an image of Renn shooting himself in the head, which causes the set to explode, splattering the deck of the ship with bloody, human intestines. Imitating what he has just seen on TV, Renn says his final words, "Long live the New Flesh", and then he pulls the trigger.
Mm that was damn long.

I agree about gore... nothing scary about it.
To this day, I still think the scariest film I've ever seen was the original "Psycho".
I have to agree, though, that "Videodrome" was pretty creepy. I saw it only once when it came out in 1983, and I can still picture that woman with the (German?) accent saying "Videodrome" in that creepy way.

She creeps the heck outta me! Especially when Max 'finds' her in his bed and there's nothing there and again when He's whipping Debbie Harry and she turns around having turned into Masha. eeeuugh

I'm very partial to The Gift... but perhaps that's because I'm a Southern chauvinist :p. To me it has everything: a stunningly beautiful setting, proper atmosphere, very real characters, a believable but mystical plot, superb casting (I can watch Katie Holmes die again and again and again...), a tangled and sordid deception ridden plot, it's scary without being gory, and most of all... it's intelligent. Scary/Horror/Thriller/Suspense movies this day and age are all so dumbed down and sophomoric. This one is a notable exception in my book.

Yay for folks mentioning Martyrs! That film is serious business, people. It is in absolutely no way easy to watch, but if you haven't seen it yet, give it a go. I wouldn't say it scared me, per se, but it definitely moved me and disturbed me in a profound number of ways.
I would also list Takashi Miike's Audition, Korean director Ji-woon Kim's Jangwha, Hongryeon (English title is "A Tale of Two Sisters." This was remade into an American film called The Uninvited, which you should avoid at all costs), and The Descent as good ones to check out.

I have always been a fan of scary movies- and scary books. The Exorcist book was much more frightening to me than the movie.
I think for me, the movies that I deem super scary have to do with the age *I* was when I watched them:
The Amityville Horror (GET OUT!)
The Shining (Twin Girls- *shudder*)
Nightmare on Elm Street (The girl clawing her way out of the body bag-eeeek!)
Stir of Echos (Kevin Bacon aside, that girl ghost stayed with me for months after I watched that movie. I lived in a big Victorian home at the time and I had to go downstairs at 6am every morning to get my coffee. That bitch felt like she was right behind me the whole time).
The Ring (*sob*)
I know there are more I am not remembering now, which is FINE. LOL

I am not a fan of horror flicks, so that said I havn't seen alot of scary movies, but out of the few that I have seen I would have to say " Jaws ". I know now if you were to watch it today, you would not be scared, but I saw this when it was first released, many years ago, and sometimes when i'm in the ocean, thoughts of that movie race through my mind. Even when it first came out, I would get spooked in the pool. So that movie definitely affected me, and still does today.

I saw a movie called Quarantine. It was made in 2008 I think. The storyline is a television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.
It totally freaked me out. You should check it out. It is kind of filmed in the same manner as Blair Witch Project (kinda shakey) but well worth it.

"Jaws" & "The Exorcist" (the original, not the re-release of 10 years ago). A few moments in "The Omen" (the original) are great because of the great cast. The latter choices are weird because I don't believe in the devil. As for sharks, I believe in them to the point that I'm sometimes sure they might burst through the drain of swimming pools that I'm in. :D
Honorary mention goes to "When a Stranger Calls" with Carol Kane. ("Have you checked the children?"...."Why haven't you checked the children?"...."The call is coming from inside the house!")
To this day I've seen only the first 20 minutes. The first & only time I watched was the first time I was babysitting as a kid. (Dumb move.) The kids were asleep upstairs, just like in the movie. Right when Carol Kane tries to get out of the house as the shadow descends the stairs, & she fumbles with the locks & rips open the door to see the large man there, the power in the real life house suddenly went out. So there I am, in pitch black in a strange house, a few feet from a stairway. I feel my way over to the corner & sit by the TV, cringing, ready to jump at every move, convinced that a killer is going to come down the stairs but I won't see the shadow because it's dark. Forty-five minutes of this and all of a sudden the power comes on in a flash, with the lights blindingly bright & the TV blasting in my ears. I think there's still a mark on the wall from where I flew into it.

I remember that, although I don't think I saw all of it... 'twas quite scary and enjoyable...
Originally a movie called "Darkness Falls" seemed pretty scary, but I've since desensitised myself and now find it pretty tame (it was one of the first horror films I watched really). Unfortunately I haven't seen any good horror films for a little while...
Another good movie (not really horror, just suspenseful) was "Ghost Ship", which I heartily recommend to anyone. :)

 sorry, oh to be terrified and alone, all because of a movie.. I've been there. But that's a great story. And I was terrified the first time I watched When A Stranger Calls. I actually even enjoyed the cheesy sequel, made for TV I think? I heard a crappy remake came out a few years ago
But as for my favorites, it's all about the classics. Horror really is becoming a lost art ( in the mainstream anyway) It seems most will just settle for shock value, blood 'n' guts over plot, suspense & creepy atmosphere

We used to harass my friend's small son with Pumpkinhead. And The Descent is, for me, one of the best horror movies in the last 10 years or more. I haven't seen the sequel yet, but I'm hoping they don't cock it up too bad.
I couldn't watch The Ruins, because the book was so damn ridiculously bad, I wanted to torch it - it had such a great concept, but in the end, I ended up having to write a review entitled something like "Audrey II + Dig Dug + Clownshoes = The Ruins," wherein I offered a detailed suggestion on how Scott Smith could fix the whole thing (hint: it involved Steve Martin dressed as a dentist rocketing out of the hole in the hill on a motorcycle a la Meatloaf 's Bat Out of Hell album cover, after which he would proceed to perform root canals, sans anesthesia, on the stupid kids & surly Mexicans alike before punching them all in the face, and then ending in a musical extravaganza composed entirely of Nextel chirps and soft-shoe dance moves.)
I even 'shopped him a new book cover to match! I'm so helpful.

Oh man. If the movie spooked you, do not ever play the games. Playing Silent Hill 2 is one of the creepiest things I've ever experienced.
The Shining (Twin Girls- *shudder*)
King really hated the Kubrick version of his story, but I think it was way better than the more recent remake Mick Garris did. In fact, it's one of my fav horror movies. The couple of seconds where Wendy runs upstairs in the hotel only to spy the dude in the ass-less bear suit getting up close and, er, personal with the dude in the tux is just classic.
I saw a movie called Quarantine.
Good choice!
You should check out the original, which is a Spanish film called [REC] - this is one of the only times I've ever thought the remake was better than the original, even if it was only slightly. Would be curious to see what you think if you check it out for comparison's sake.

& 'when a stranger calls' was good for a scare when i was a teen, i had just started babysitting as did alot of my friends, it was a movie we talked about alot~ there was another one, more recent, where carol kane is it it too, as jill from the first one, but she is an adult & tries to help find the killer from the first movie, because he wasn't caught or escaped or something like that~ i think it was called 'when a stranger calls back', tho more violent, not near as scary as the first one~ the first one showed a bit of gore, but not much, all the other aspects of the movie leading up to finding the children dead are what made you crap~ then seeing the kids room bloodied after she gets the guts to check on the children~ good scary flick~

I saw this movie when I was 14 and had nightmares for days afterwards. If you ever wondered why the anti-nuclear movement in the UK was so much stronger than it was in the US, you'll know after watching Threads.
Oh yeah, and it has charred corpses, formation vomiting, firing squads, hospital steps dripping in blood, dead babies, people eating raw sheep, amputations performed with anesthetic, and the main character chews off her umbilical cord when no one's around to help her give birth. Everybody dies and the Sun doesn't shine for half the movie. Fun for the whole family! :blob2:

Well I'm not one for scary movies either......
1/ Halloween (the 1st ) and original version only....I can't watch the others cause its all blood & gore and I don't like that much....this is more supenseful...heck I even have the 'special' edition version its really interesting cause they have a documentary about it all etc. Its really great. I recall when I was just in my teens in the early 80's and this was always shown at Halloween time always....not so much now (at least not the original).....
2/The Haunting/again the original is really great...with Julie Harris (I always remember her from Knots Landing/Val's mom)....great suspense.....
So thats about it for scary movies...since I don't like to watch them much....it does stay with me for sometime.......
I do have a question thought.....I've heard about 'Silent Hill'....but don't know much about it...was the story set in some asylum?? Please explain....thanks!!
Also: I do recall watching the TV commericals in the lates 70's and there was this scary commerical for a movie...don't recall the title but I think it might have been a 'B' type scary movie....I just recall the commerical....it said something like ...." roses are red...violets are blue --theres this girl in a creepy old house by some red drapes and this head is turning as the saying is being said.....I just don't recall the rest of it....but I know it scared the crap out of me (me & my brother) cause the head finished turning around and it was a skelton head with a wig on.....anyway, sorry to get off track but it was strange.....any clues how I could find out what this was? could I put old movie trailers in at YouTube or something?? even though I'd never watch it just wondering at least what the title was.............Thanks......:D

"Silent Hill" is a series of video games, which they also made a movie for a few years back. They are survival horror games, and Silent Hill itself is a town where many bad things happen, haha. The plots are pretty involved, so it won't make sense for me to try to explain it (you can read here, if you want: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill), but I really love (most of) the games, because they are the perfect mix of actual story, ambience, and gameplay - I love anything with a psychological bent, and these games have that in spades.
They did start going downhill after the 3rd one, but the awesome that is Silent Hill 2 makes up for everything in my book.
The movie they made was all right - it sort of follows the plot of the first game, but they changed the main character to a girl. In the game, it was Harry Mason trying to find his daughter. In the movie, it's a mother instead. Maybe the filmmakers thought audiences wouldn't identify with a guy running around after a lost child like that? I don't know.
They also took a bunch of the monsters from Silent Hill 2 and stuck them in there. They are scary monsters and interesting, so I understand wanting to put them in the film, but they don't belong.
The monsters people see when trapped in Silent Hill are sort of like reflections of their own psychological screwiness - for example, the "sexy" nurses you see in the movie are from Silent Hill 2, where the main character, James, is searching for his dead wife. They represent his sexual frustration - there are nurses in the first Silent Hill, but they aren't well-endowed or "sexy" like they are in SH2, and the filmmakers went with the sexy ones anyway. Pyramid Head is also one of James' monsters, as is the "Lying Figure," the first monster the mom and the cop encounter after they realize they can't leave town in the movie.
I love me some Silent Hill like a fat kid love cake.

I love me some Silent Hill like a fat kid love cake. Thanks for all the info Zombie.....cause I've heard it referenced on a web site a couple of times & well I don't really play video games (nor would I play scary video games either).....I guessed it had to do with some asylum or hospital but not so much?? That was alot of info to type so I do appreciate your time in explaining it all to me. Very interesting read I will say....thanks again....don't know if I'd want to watch it though.....

Yeah, that was creepy.

No problem, I like to ramble about crap I like. SH is definitely not for everyone - I mentioned earlier that I am a horror junkie, and even the first run-through of SH2 gave ME the heebie-jeebies. It also has a tendency to get really...graphic.
There are hospitals & mentions of asylums, though, so you're not off - many parts of the various games take place in a hospital, and a lot of the monsters are kinda hospital-staff-based or mental hospital-y. In SH: Origins, the main char's mom was in an institution, and Alex, the main char in Homecoming, was also in one, if I remember rightly.

I forgot to mention - I know it's not a movie, but the TV show "In Search Of..." used to scare me as much as anything I ever saw in theaters. Probably had more nightmares from that show than from any of the films that I listed. :)

I love scary films, seen a ton of them...and now I'm completely desensitized.
I prefer something with creepy atmosphere, like "Let The Right One In", "Session 9" or "Dead Birds".

You have wonderful taste. My favorite film from 2008.
I've watched it several times on blu-ray with friends and even though it is not in your face gory, it's just über creepy and gave me and my friends the willies....we sit there and hang onto each other or a pillow...or my dog. hehehe.

Also The Changeling (not the Angelina movie)...again when I was probably around 13.
Oh yes! 'The Changeling' (with George C. Scott who moves into a house haunted by a murdered boy) was creepy, particularly the self-moving wheelchair!

Best horrors I've seen lately are Drag Me To Hell, but that's more of a fun horror, a real throwback to the 80s - I really loved it, and El Orfanato (The Orphanage).
I love El Orfanto! Forgot that one...which is funny as I bought it the moment it hit blu-ray. The lead actress, Belén Rueda, is outstanding. So believable. Also, when the psychic is exploring the rooms, the hairs on my arm were standing on end. Yikes.
Also Drag Me To Hell is really good. Fun and it gave me some jolts!

Never heard of it. I just added it to my Netflix queue on your recommendation. I like creepy 70's film styles.
I also love the film The Sentinel (1977). This movie is just plain creepy and disturbing. I'll never forget that Beverly D'Angelo masturbating scene. Bizarre.

1. The Hills Have Eyes (the new version is even better than the sick original)
2. House of 1000 Corpses (horrible title but the movie is super disturbing)
3. The Darkest Hour
4. Pet Semetary (I saw this in the theatre when it first came out and it truly terrified me)
My all time scariest movie has got to be Burnt Offerings. This movie frightens me to this day. Great casting, very eerie atmosphere...and the chauffeur.
