Not my favorite, but it is a catchy and rockin’ tune. Certainly better than Stevie’s other singles from this time (‘Paper Doll’, ‘Maybe Love’).
Question – do you think ‘Sometimes It’s Bitch’ would have done better commercially if Bon Jovi released it instead of Stevie? Popularity has alot to do with songs getting radio play. Stevie’s career was in decline at this time, but Bon Jovi was hot.

I've always liked "Sometimes..." I never thought about it before but I can kinda imagine Bon Jovi singining it instead. Maybe with Stevie on harmony? I bet it could have been a hit!

Paper Doll is actually really one of my favorite songs from her, I think she was trying to get in with the 90's sound of "sorta ska" and I really think it worked.
It doesnt sound like anything else shed realeased

Back in 1991, I really preferred "Love's A Hard Game To Play" over "Sometimes It's A Bitch", thinking it sounded more "Stevie-ish" or something like that. However, shortly thereafter and continuing to this day, I completely love "Sometimes It's A Bitch"!
The lyrics are like her life, especially in 1991. I love Stevie's voice, soaring on the song, and the harmonies on "You gotta take it as it comes... Sometimes it don't come easy..."
(I think "Paper Doll" is one of Stevie best songs of the 1990s!) :)

Incidentally, in an interview from the late 1990's, Barbara Nicks said that 'Sometimes It's a Bitch' is her least favorite song by her daughter. She didn't like Stevie using the 'b word'.
She did say that 'Touched By an Angel' was her favorite, and wished that the tv show at the time used it.

I love Sometime's it' a Bitch. Point blank love it  I've been able to relate to it many, many times in my life.
I can't imagine someone else singing it and I don't think I'd want them to. One of the reasons it's so special to me is that Stevie is singing it.

It's unfortunate that the song wasn’t recorded under better circumstances (Stevie being pressured to do it by the record company). She might have had fonder feelings for it.
I read that she did enjoy recording 'Hard Game to Play' and really got along with Brett Michaels. She didn't have that same vibe with Jon Bon Jovi.

I couldn't agree more. SIAB freaking rocks! It is one of my all time favorite songs of hers. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it wasn't written by her.

You know, I didn't like it for the better part of two decades... but for some reason, I've taken a liking to it the past couple of years! I like the message of the song, it's fun to sing along to, it has very visual lyrics... and I even like Stevie's vocals on it... there's some passion there.
I do think it would have undoubtedly been somewhat more successful had Bon Jovi actually recorded it. But as I recall, their star had also fallen a good deal by the early '90s.

Billy Falcon gave an incredible interview to Enchantress of the Silver Springs Stevie fanzine back in 1991. He basically wrote the entire song, with JBJ helping out on the chorus.
Another interesting interview was the one where Stevie (in addition to running around the house looking for some whiskey, which is lower caloric alcohol ~ LOL!) says that she recorded "Sometimes It's A Bitch" with JBJ the way he wanted to. Then, after he left, she re-recorded her vocal the way she wanted to and liked it much better.
Whatever that means in Stevie Land.
But I'm rocking to the song right now, getting ready for work!

It was a hit here in Australia, i can still remember them playing it on radio and someone calling up and asking for the 'really cool new song from Stevie Nicks'.... i love it because it comes from Stevie's voice.......

Oh, I’ve forgotten about this - looking at the credits for ‘Sometimes It’s A Bitch’, Randy Jackson (of ‘American Idol’) who used to play bass for Journey is listed as Stevie’s bass player too.
I wonder if during the recording session he thought ‘Stevie-Dawg’s’ singing was ‘too pitchy’?

About Australia ~
I swear my Australian CD-single of "Sometimes It's A Bitch" is remixed, like Chris Lord-Alge did with "Love's A Hard Game To Play" (and several others in 1991, like "Violet and Blue", "Sleeping Angel", and "Battle of The Dragon" as well as many on TimeSpace).
Not a huge difference, but everything sounds crisper than the album version. Anyone else notice this? Or am I nuts?

I have found few of the songs that Stevie has covered have been up to her standards. But I always liked "Sometimes It's A Bitch". The video was interesting because it was rarely shown on MTV or VH1. The only time I saw it on TV was when Jon Bon Jovi was the guest VJ and showed it because he'd "never seen it on MTV before". I like the song best of the three on "TimeSpace".
The clips in the video are great, I don't like that she basically shows this video during "Landslide" now though.

I wanted to like this song when it came out. But it was really the 1st time I was truly disappointed by Stevie. Come to find out shortly thereafter, that Stevie wasn't crazy about it either. I liked "Desert Angel", and would have much preferred her own contributions of this time, such as "Mix Down (Love & War)" & "Listen To The Rain", or the re-releases of "Violet & Blue" & "Sleeping Angel" remixed.
Stevie was very candid in her interviews during the Timespace tour & press (which was billed the "Whole Lotta Trouble" tour in the summer of 91'), which came before "TimeSpace" was released in September, noting her disconnect w/ Bon Jovi in the studio & the curse word drama, but she did have warmer feelings toward Bret. Also, these songs were noticeably absent from her tour set while Stevie made no mention of them on stage. It was very apparent that Stevie was not at all thrilled to be covering these songs, she was coerced into it.
Stevie did both of these covers sadly misguided by her management & record label, with 2 artists (Bon Jovi & Bret Michaels) very soon to be wiped off the map of relevance, as Nirvana swept in a new era of music in fall of 91'.

Bingo! Therefore, I could never truly have love for this song. I was very surprised reading these responses because I didn't think a lot of people liked SIAB but apparently I was wrong.
To me, this song is so "un-Stevie" both musically and lyrically not to mention she was very uncomfortable using the word bitch. Considering Time/Space was a "best of" album it makes no sense to me on an artistic level to include SIAB and Love's a Hard Game to Play when so many other beautiful Stevie-penned "hits" exist. However, I do understand the record label did this so they could release new singles and increase album sales but to me that's nothing more than a greedy-record label mindset instead of artistic integrity. I'm not dissing Stevie because I know she pretty much had to go along with this tactic but I wish things had been different and artists were given more creative control but at the end of the day it's always about making more $.

I LOVE this song. I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard it on the radio.
I was living in Phoenix and it was in the evening when a DJ announced they would soon be playing a new single by Stevie Nicks. I waited and waited and when the song finally came on my phone rang. It was a long distance call from a good friend named Sandy. I was recording it to cassette while we talked and wanted to rush her off the phone so I could listen to it.

I think it's completely trite and amateurish.
"Rainbows and castles of candy"...gurgle, gurgle, gurgle...wretch.
But then this is my thinking now. Of course I liked it when it first came out, as Stevie could fart in the microphone and I'd like it. Back then, I could not see the forest through the trees.
Same goes for that other dreadful "new" Time Space track.

It was totally overproduced and her added lyrics didn't help. The song just wouldn't quit. I hated the added songs on Timespace. What a waste of space. Especially when two of her hits, after the glitter and nightbird didn't even make the album.

I agree with this entire post.
For the most part I think “Timespace” is a solid best of package and I actually prefer it over “Crystal Visions.” I think the running order on TS if flawless; it all flows together so well. With that said, though I don’t hate SIAB and LAHGTP, I too would have preferred Stevie’s own contributions, such as Listen to the Rain. I recall liking the 91 demo of this much much better than what ended up on Street Angel. Gosh, I still can’t stand Stevie’s vocals on the “SA” version, she sounds constipated.
My running order would have been:
01-Listen to the Rain (new)
02-Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around
03-Whole Lotta Trouble (edited remix)
04-Talk To Me
05-Stand Back *
06-After The Glitter Fades
07-Long Way To Go (edited remix)
08-Love’s A Hard Game To Play (new)
09-If Anyone Falls
10-Rooms on Fire +
11-Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove) *
12-Nightbird *
13-Leather and Lace *
14-I Can’t Wait *
15-Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You
16-Desert Angel (CD Only)
Official single edit version *
Radio promo edit +
1st single
Listen To the Rain b/w Sleeping Angel (remix)
2nd single
Love’s A Hard Game To Play (edited remix) b/w Violet and Blue (remix)
Since we already have album versions available on the album (duh), as a fan, I want the official single edits (which most are not on CD). I also would like to have seen an edited version of the fabulous remix of “Long Way To Go”, though not a single release, it was a radio release and did very well.

I would have vomited to hear the edited single of "Edge of Seventeen" on TimeSpace. Chopping out the second verse ruins the song, and that does not belong on an official "Best Of".
The single version was on the Gap's in-store playlist in June 2002 where I work, and I just cringed to hear Stevie's song edited and forced to hear it that way twice a shift! Same the next month with "Stand Back"'s chop job!
Chris Lord-Alge did a superb job remixing many of the Classics, and I'd rather hear that than songs hacked up "for radio", as if listeners could not stand more than 3:30 a song... CLA's GLORIOUS remixing of "Rooms on Fire", with all the magic and sparkle VS. the single edit, which bizarrely slices out the beautiful mandolin after the first chorus.
Perhaps a collection with the "Radio Edits" would be nice, but not an official Greatest Hits package like TimeSpace. That's why I was glad the November 2006 "Best Of" featuring only singles edits was scrapped in favour of Crystal Visions, with the full versions, plus Stevie's FM hits sequenced in. IMO IMO IMO
Agree that "Listen To The Rain" should have been the 1st single as it was meant to be (Atlantic release # and all proves this).

Fine, then how about a very rate edition of Time Space with the official single edits? I'm just saying, as a fan and a collector it would be nice to have the official edits on a CD. I mean really, we have the full versions already and they've been rehashed time and time again, give us something different for a change.
In my opinion, CV just don't flow good at all, and including SS on it totally seems disjointed.

I think a 3rd release, like a 2-CD The Very Best of Stevie Nicks (similar to the 2002 FM one) could house the single edits.

However, I will never understand why Stevie's songs with other people "don't flow/don't belong" with her solo work on Collections. PLENTY of other artists have their group and solo hits on combined collections:

Chris Lord-Alge did do a fantastic job w. "Rooms On Fire"!! It was so much more of everything. I especially took most notice of the drums and percussion being more prominent, lifting the song out of the doldrums (It's too bad this version wasn't on OSOTM..It may have been a bigger hit...it was that noticeable!) Strangely the song that would seem to gain from the updated remixes (Stand Back), was the only one I didn't care for...It sounded a little too busy...and her vocal had more reverb or echo on it.
And if "Listen To The Rain" had been on TS and released as 1st single...Stevie would have surely hit the stage with it, and promoted it harder. Stevie in the lyrics is basically using "Listen To The Rain" as a stop and smell the roses metaphor, which by releasing a Greatest Hits was what she was doing...."Well your a frontliner.....", this song was about her, and her reflecting on her career! Stevie was pissed about being put against the wall...doing these songs by Bon Jovi & Bret Michaels.
She just seemed to ignore SIAB, except in the press where she talked down on it (the only good thing about this song was the video) I also agree w previous poster that in addition to the obvious it was overproduced. the only new song she ever performed was LAHGTP 1 time on Arsenio Hall.

I could not agree with you more and I've thought about this often over the years. I never differentiate between her FM and solo songs. To me they are all Stevie songs. I mean, in my iPod the artist is always Stevie Nicks whether it's one of her FM songs or solo. This may sound insulting to some FM fans but it's still a Stevie song, just different players. I had often wondered over the years how she chooses whether a song will be FM or solo and I finally saw an interview a few years ago where she answered that question. I don't know the exact quote but it was something along the lines of "all of my songs are available to Fleetwood Mac" which I think is so sweet and endearing.

Diana Ross
Sting
Tina Turner
Maria McKee
Why should Stevie be any different? She wrote the songs, sings them, just like Sting & Co. "Rhiannon" is not "a Fleetwood Mac song". It's a Stevie Nicks song.

I think someday we will get a boxed set encompassing all of Stevie's work. When? Who knows. But I am sure one day there will be a 3 or 4 disc boxed set with all her singles from FM and solo on 2 discs and then a disc or 2 of unreleased demos/live versions/duets and all that jazz. It will be like Enchanted II, but they will call it some creative lyric of hers subtitled by "The Essential STEVIE NICKS"! Someone is bound to try to make a buck off of it, and I would probably buy it. Another thing I would like would be "The Complete Stevie Nicks" that encompassed all her work, solo and fleetwood mac, and chronologically ordered the songs by when they were written. Demos and everything. Everything she has ever done. Of course, it would have to be after she dies (NEVER!) and would be an extremely elaborate and expensive package, but I'd sure as **** buy it.

I don't hear a mandolin, but I do hear an acoustic guitar that's definitely more pronounced and seems to actually play somewhat of an actual solo. It starts when she's singing "long nets of white cloud my memory". It continues to play as she's singing "there is magic... all around you... everytime you walk... in the ro0m..." and it even keeps going beyond that. Is that what you're talking about or is it something else? I've listened to every version I could find, but I'm not hearing a mandolin. I just want to know if I'm missing (missing, missing) a version!
