I’m probably in the minority here, but I adore this song. It’s my favorite off TOSOTM (followed by ‘Ooh My Love’ and ‘Rooms’).

I love the opening notes and the whole musical track. Nonetheless, I do admit the song could have been more 'commercial' if Stevie changed the 2nd main verse (‘I talked to my famous friend last night… widow and a dove). Her meaning is rather obscure to appeal to a general audience.

Anyways, still a great track!

Hey Greendaze, I agree with you, this is one of my favorite songs off of the album.
I really like the chorus of it

At first, in May 1989, it was amongst my least favourite songs on The Other Side of The Mirror. I didn't hate it, but it didn't grab me.

However, OSOTM I played constantly, and it grew on me. I think being on front row for Stevie's Texas shows and experiencing it live also increased my love for the song.

BTW, like "Whole Lotta Trouble", a live video for "Two Kinds of Love" was filmed in Houston ~ where is it, Stevie? ;)

I think this song is ok for an album track but a terrible choice of single! What was Stevie thinking?!

At first in 1989 and being 15 at the time, this album had to grow on me when it came out. I hated the front cover and still don't think it was her best look. The whole album had that Alice feel but I guess that was the point. I liked Two Kinds Of Love though and probably my favorite off of it was Long Way To Go. I still remember radio stations playing it. I like ROF too and think she was so pretty in that video. I loved the red outfit and her hair and makeup.

I liked the way she performed the song in concert, with an extended ending. I think the strongest lines are 'Who in the world do you think that you are fooling, I've already done everything that you are doing.'

It's peculiar that, even though it was a single, it hasn't appeared on either of her "best of/greatest hits" albums (the exception being the box set).

i think that because although it was a hit, and peaked at 16, it wasn't HER BEST and it wasn't mind-blowing AMAZING. My favorites off that album are and forever will be "Doing the Best That I Can" and "Long Way To Go" and "Ooh My Love"

True, it wasn't her best, but 'Whole Lotta Trouble,' and 'Beauty and the Beast' were singles and they didn't really blaze up the chart either! But I guess 'Two Kinds of Love' was a slightly weaker quality single. Yet, I'm a completist and want every single represented -- even if they were stinkers. (I learn to love the stinkers!). 'Long Way to Go' is so much better and should have been in her live set list. It was a single outside the US.

On what planet did TKOL chart, let alone peak at #16?

Bruce Hornsby had a huge hit record in 1988. I believe she was trying to capitlize on his recent fame.

I had a girlfriend who liked it, at the time. Does that count?

BTW, I HATE Whole Lotta Trouble!!!

I liked that off the album too back then and now but after seeing the piano video version on Youtube, I fell in love with that version more than the others. And the girls singing next to her made it all the better. It melts my heart.

Good point. I love Bruce Hornsby! The first 2 albums he did with The Range are both excellent. I just think that what should have been a great pairing was wasted on a dull song. It has a few good lyrics in it but other than that... It'sa real shame because they could work so well together!

My favourites from the album are probably Long Way To Go, Rooms On Fire and Ooh My Love. I also do have a real soft spot for Fire Burning but I seem to be the only one who can even tolerate that song!

I love all the songs on this record except TKOL.

I really like this song, too.
The live version from the OSOTM tour is pretty bad though...

Great temptations never really die <3

I have a soft spot for this song, I loved it from the 1st time I heard it when I played OSOTM for the 1st time. esp, the last part where Stevie sings so sweetly...

Two kinds of love...
One for the way you walk...
One for the way you love me...
You're a great temptation.".
That gave me goosebumps.

I recall a really positive review of this song & OSOTM in Billboard Magazine when it came out, the critic said TKOL could be this years "Leather & Lace";)

I do think it was a bad choice for a second single in the US. They should have definitely released "Long Way To Go" as they did in the UK, and had a great video like ROF to go with it!! The problem inherit with TKOL is the overly self-indulgent lyrics i.e. "talked to my famous friend last night"....If Stevie has tweaked some of these lyrics a little more towards an ambiguous vein, I suspect the song would be more universally accepted.

However, It does contains some killer lyrics as does the whole OSOTM record. I dare to say Stevies lyrics on OSOTM are some of her best and most revealing ever. It was Stevie facing the mirror, her demons and being candid for the 1st time in her career. I recall this CD was generally well received by critics worldwide except for the scathing review in RS, but they have only been nice to Stevie once! and that was for TISL.

Yeah, Stevie has always been quite the conniver - always out riding coattails of others and searching for ways to make the next quick buck :p.

Seriously though, given the fact that Bruce had a hit record at the time I could more likely see her record label looking to capitalize on his fame as opposed to Stevie. I'm not saying she necessarily opposed the idea and was forced to do it but I highly doubt that was her primary motivation. Call me naive but I don't think so...

This song epitomizes the definition of chesseyness but I still like it. I would definitely not consider it art in it's finest form or a highlight of Stevie's career but I like it nonetheless. I really cannot stand the guy who sang it on TOSOTM tour with her when I watch it on youtube. Such a turnoff. I dig the line "great temptations never really die". That's hot.

There are so many way better songs that should have taken it's place on Enchanted. Not sure what she was thinking here.

Oh and one last thing - I don't think she says "well" enough in this song.

Sorry to say i don't like this song at all

"two kinds of love .. one for the way you walk .. one for the way you love me"

uh... that sentence doesn't even mean anything does it??

Seriously there are 2 kind of love (count them) one is the way HE walks (uh), another is simply the fact HE loves HER (how is that a "kind" of love.

THATS IT is it!? boring

There's two kinds of love, "theirs, and ours..."
(whatever THAT means, LOL)

Maybe she means that old sacred vs. profane love from centuries back?

I don't think she was trying to capitalize on his success as much as she was in search of new collaborators, e.g., Kenny G. I'm not a big fan of Bruce Hornsby as an artist, but I must admit that he is definitely one of the most distinctive piano players in the business. And the main problem with TKOL is that it uses Hornsby in all the wrong ways. Rather than highlight his great piano playing (like on "Juliet"), we just get his voice instead which, admittedly, isn't too spectacular. When utilized properly, I think a duet with Hornsby would have worked extremely well; Don Henley's "End of the Innocence" is the perfect example of this.

In 1989, Stevie said that one of the two kinds definitely was the sexual kind, the kind you get watching a certain man walk!

Except for Robert Martin's gospel wails, I love the Houston live version!!! (I WAS THERE!!!) Especially how Stevie sings it at the end:

"Oh darling... two kinds of... love..."

And her silly intro:

"So, just how many kinds of love are there?
Well, in Texas, they would say there are two kinds..."

I've always had a few differing ideas on what she meant by TKOL. The easy one is love vs lust... hence the constant usage of the word "temptation." On that same vein, temptation could be referencing to forbidden/secret love. Two kinds of love... the kind you keep hidden in your heart, and the type you can show others. I think we all have that one love... the one you never quite get over, who you think about all the time... and any other kind of love after that is just different. Transversely, maybe she meant for a relationship to work there has to be two kinds of love... friendship type love, and then the more romantic kind. I dunno... could be any of these... or even a combo of all put together.

I have always been surprised at the level of dislike for TKOL. While I wouldn't rate it as a great song or among Stevie's best, it IS one of the better songs on TOSOTM, IMO. Certainly it's one of more commercial with Hornsby's and Kenny G's contributions, so I can see why it was selected as a single.

Also, it has one of her better melody lines from a time that I call her "no melody era". Many of her songs from the late 80s have what I would call a "shapeless" melody...the melody line sounds like some random notes thrown together rather than a cohesive structure that pulls the listener in and creates aural impact. It began with "Welcome To The Room" and continued through "No Questions Asked", some of the TOSOTM songs ("Alice" and "Ghosts" come to mind), and was a big problem on BTM.

While the melody on the verses isn't particularly strong, the chorus of TKOL is actually pretty memorable...you could hum along to it after a couple of listens, and the vocal harmony is quite nice. Of course, compared to other stuff on the radio at that time, it was stale so I wasn't surprised that it bombed. I agree that "Long Way To Go" would have made a better choice for a single.

I love that intro.

And when it's live, I also love, "Who in the world do you think that you are fooling -- me?"

The best on OSOTM? That's not saying a whole lot! The most colourful piece of garbage in a pile of garbage is still a piece of garbage.

Are you saying that "Welcome To The Room... Sara", "Alice", and "Ghosts" have no clear melody???? Huh? And her songs on BTM? "Freedom", "Affairs Of The Heart", and "Love Is Dangerous" have melodies that sound like random notes? Doesn't sound like that to me!
