As some of you know, I run the only bookstore in my little corner of the Reddest State in the Nation. As a result, I see a lot of GLBT people come into the store and browse. Many of them are closeted. A few months ago, a shy young man came into my store and quietly browsed the GLBT section. I struck up a conversation with him. He is very bright, well spoken and very well read.
He has grown up in a very religious household and has had a lot of issues with his family and who he really is. He began to come in regularly, and we would talk about books, gay life, and various other things. He has even snuck out to come have dinner at my home with me and my boyfriend. I wanted him to see what a normal, loving gay couple could be like.
His 17th birthday is coming up, so I decided to make it as special as I could. I emailed Perry Moore, author of 'Hero,' an amazing book about a young gay superhero. I asked Mr. Moore if he would autograph a copy to my friend for his birthday.
Mr. Moore, gracious man that he is, not only said yes, but offered to do a Q&A for the (very neglected) book blog that aegisbearer and I write. I got the Q&A posted just a while ago and wanted to let you guys know in case anyone would like to read it.
PS: with Perry Moore saying yes, I decided to hit up other gay authors for autographs. To date, my young friend has a dozen autographed books to start him on his very own library when he moves out of his parents house! I cannot begin to tell you how incredibly gracious people are.
