Trying to organize demos by sessions (eg, Bella Donna sessions, Tango sessions, etc.) Does anyone know the timeframe for the below tracks? Some I've heard conflicting info.

Blue Lamp?
Blue Water?
Castaway?
Cecilia (I've seen this listed as Buckingham Nicks sessions, but also as Tusk sessions)?
Forest of the Black Roses?
No Light (I'll Live Alone)?
Rhiannon (talking demo...seen listed as '78...how could is be post White Album??)
She Loves Him Still?
Sleeping Angel?
Watch Devil?

Thanks for any info you have!!

Here's my best choices:

Blue Lamp - Bella Donna, since it was released for Heavy Metal soundtrack in 81
Blue Water - Bella Donna
Castaway - Bella Donna
Cecilia - Mine says Tusk
Forest - Bella Donna
No Light - Sometime in the 70s - I'd like to know too
Rhiannon - Must be for white album or Buckingham Nicks 2.
She Still Loves Him - RAL (Did mike bise say there was a SA one too? RAL is common though)
Sleeping Angel - Bella Donna
Watch Devil - Another 70s one I think - not sure when though.

I thought Planets was from the Rumours sessions? Hence it's inclusion on the reissue.

Cecilia could have been written anywhere from 1975 (when she wrote SOTM) to the Tusk era, but I'm not sure about the recording. Are there two versions? I had one once that was labeled as Bella Donna era and another that said 1978. I don't know if that's just someone (me) ****ing with file naming. I just remember one was really long. I think it's only being labeled BN because it might have been on the Cathouse Blues compilation that someone put together.

Blue Lamp - 1980.

Watch Devil - Another 70s one I think - not sure when though. That's got to be 1978 by process of elimination. There's a Yamaha CP30 being played on it, which means it wasn't recorded before late 1977, & it was released on ALMANAC on vinyl, a copy of which I bought in 1979. Furthermore, given the fact that the CP30 is on it, it must have been laid down at the Village Recorder during the year the band was making Tusk because Stevie wouldn't have had such a keyboard for her own use--she was using Christine's. That goes for the other demos with the same keyboard, like THE DEALER.

I think Stevie did a lot of demos with Mick Fleetwood drumming & Tom Moncrieff on bass in this period between Rumours & Tusk, & some of them seem to have been recorded at the Village, as well as the studio Tom & Stevie built (wherever that was).

I also think she did a lot of her solo piano demos from 1978 to 1980, even of songs that had already been recorded (like RHIANNON). I think several of the RHIANNON piano demos are dated March 1978. It was a very active time for Stevie musically, & she seems to have been filled with energy for recording demos, guest-appearing with musician friends (Kenny Loggins, Todd Rundgren, Walter Egan, Bob Welch, John Stewart), & showing up at awards shows.

When was that piano version of Rhiannon done, when she asks all of these random questions?

Stevie: Lindsey, Don't you think Rhiannon is a wonderful name?
Stevie (As Lindsey): Yes Stevie I do, I think Rhiannon is a wondeful name

"Blue Water" was recorded as a demo in March 1978 and copyrighted then, along with "Forsaken Love", "Forest of The Black Roses" and several piano demos of "Rhiannon". The "talking/questions" demo of "Rhiannon" is from Early 1978.

"Castaway" is from 1980, as are the demos of "Blue Lamp". The studio versions of "Blue Lamp" are Feb/March 1981.

"Planets of The Universe" written in 1976, demoed several times between 1976-1978 (as well as 1996-1998).

"She Still Loves Him" from 1984 for Rock A Little.

"Sleeping Angel" I don't remember off the top of my head. Circa 1976. Copyright is 1975 I believe.

"Watchdevil", as David said, showed up in 1978 on Almanac.

Thanks, Mike and everyone else. So, it's believed that the '78 demos and Sleeping Angel were not part of sessions for any particular album?

I'm puzzled about the Rhiannon 'talking demo' ("Don't you think that 'Rhiannon' is a beautiful name?"). She says, "Richard, I just finished this song and we have to go to a park and record the sound of birds rising. Okay? It's really important."

Why would she have been doing this in 1978 when she had already recorded it 3 years earlier, sang it live for the past 3 years, and speak about it in this demo as though it is a new song that she just finished and envisions the sound of birds rising to be part of the recorded version??

In the same vein, why would she be asking Lindsey if he thought 'Rhiannon', a song they've recorded and sang for 3 years, is a beautiful name?

It just seems that, based on what she is saying, that it is more likely to be 74-75, right?

Thanks for your thoughts.

In regards to 'No Light (I'll Live Alone)', the Planets piano demo in which she says at the end, "That was really intense"....anyone know from which year that is? (This isn't the one from the Tusk remastered edition.)

It's been reported before that Stevie had a development deal for a "Rhiannon project" , which may have become a movie/animated special, which may explain why the leaked master reels are labeled "Movie Reel Demos" or "Film Score". Stevie laid down new piano demo's for Rhiannon, as well as "Forsaken Love", "Forest of The Black Roses" ,"Blue Water" as Mike Bise mentioned in early 1978, and probably "Three Birds of Rhiannon" as well, which are the basis of the "Rhiannon songs" that Stevie refers to in interviews from time to time. Songs she has held back from recording because they were written specifically as a concept piece, and meant to be recorded as one project.

Stevie brought up the Rhiannon project again in 2007 in a few interviews while promoting Crystal Visions, saying then that she wanted to get this project done and it may be the next thing she does.....envisioning it as a Lord of the Rings sort of project. Of course this still remains on the list of 100 things Stevie has promised to do.

I think it would be terrific idea if Stevie just recorded a Rhiannon concept record with all these gorgeous songs, and released it w/o a movie or animated special attached. These songs are just too good to go unrecorded!! It would draw alot of attention and bring her Rhainnon legacy full circle. She mentioned at one point in 2007 that she wanted to work w/ David Foster, I can see these songs being produced with him in that dramatic style with orchestration, strings and a new ballad version of Rhiannon as it was written.

Thanks, Mike and everyone else. So, it's believed that the '78 demos and Sleeping Angel were not part of sessions for any particular album?I agree with Christopher--it was intended (more or less) for some big project centering on Rhiannon.

I'm puzzled about the Rhiannon 'talking demo' ("Don't you think that 'Rhiannon' is a beautiful name?"). She says, "Richard, I just finished this song and we have to go to a park and record the sound of birds rising. Okay? It's really important."

In the same vein, why would she be asking Lindsey if he thought 'Rhiannon', a song they've recorded and sang for 3 years, is a beautiful name?I think she's just dramatizing her writing process & possibly the process of writing the proposed movie. I don't even think the men she mentions are even present in that place at that time. Maybe she wanted to record a document of the project, much the way that she filmed Bella Donna recording sessions.

Do you remember reading Daisann McLane's Rolling Stone cover story on Fleetwood Mac? McLane spent some time with the band in late 1979, from tour rehearsals through the first few weeks of gigs. At one point, McLane interviews Stevie Nicks at her Vilma Banky mansion in the Hollywood Hills (I guess where Jim Ladd also interviewed her in December 1979). She takes the reporter into her music room & plays some recordings for her, possibly the same recordings we've all heard:

The music room is dark; there are antique lamps draped with shawls, but she does not turn the lights on. And the tapes she ends up pulling out of her library are not rough Fleetwood Mac demos but works-in-progress for her solo project, a film and soundtrack based on the myth of Rhiannon, the Welsh witch. Earlier in 1979, Nicks signed on as a solo artist with Modern records, a label headed by former boyfriend Paul Fishkin and Danny Goldberg. For a while the move prompted rumors that she was preparing to leave Fleetwood Mac.

"The legend of Rhiannon is about the song of the birds that take away pain and relieve suffering," she says. "That's what music is to me. I don't want any pain." She puts a cassette in the deck and sits down cross-legged on the carpet, between the stereo speakers. The music begins; a gentle roll of piano chords. Nicks' own version of "Rhiannon" is softer, more emotional than Fleetwood Mac's. "It's not a rock & roll song," she says, closing her eyes.

They would have to use the original demo vocals for the Rhiannon project or the whole project would fall short since she can't hit those notes anymore. It would difficult to listen to new versions of those songs and have her try and add something new to them. The vocals would not blend. Just my opinion. Another missed opportunity since those are some of her best songs and it would be hard to change them to much.

Yeah, what was I thinking.....Dream on, silly dreamer....;)
But seriously, you have a valid point. For example, to me Stevie and Lindsey ruined the melody on "Goodbye Baby", and it was probably cause she could not sing it even close to the once temptress siren on the piano demo!! Instead we got oatmeal. The music is bland & goes nowhere, while Stevie is unable to lift it to the heights it deserved. I tried to get into their artistic interpretation of this old gem, w/ Stevie's hushed vocal intonations over Lindsey's lullabye arrangement, but all I could hear was the best parts missing from the demo. I was looking forward to this song on SYW most of all, and it was the biggest disappointment of Stevie's old vault songs.

Same case can be made for "Candlebright", albeit I like this one much better than the way GB turned out, but it still pales in comparison to the beautiful acoustic BN demo. Stevie voice was just soaring and so passionate on that.

Oh well, I still think these songs need to be fully conceptualized somehow, someday. And I cannot envision anyone but Stevie doing it, even if it has to be in her mature "torch" voice. Arguably, "Planets of the Universe" turned out pretty well. John Shanks & Stevie had to structure the verses more traditionally, but they turned the passionate demo into a fresh modern arrangement w/ classic Stevie flourishes, while she sings it well, it still is a bit cold only in comparison to the young voiced demo.

By the way does anyone have a master reel quality of "Forest Of The Black Roses" and "Three Birds of Rhiannon" that they could share :D I have the "Uncirculated Rumors" LP bootleg versions w. lots of low end and hiss. I really love these songs!! In my opinion, some of Stevie's best songwriting... she was really on a roll in the mid to late 70's!

Thanks! But, I already have this one with this quality. Those of you who have not heard this dark beautiful ballad should download this and add it to their collections. I think its a must have in any Stevie demo collection.

But I was hoping someone has an almost crystal clear master reel quality with little to no hiss, to share of this and "The Maker of Birds" aka "Three Birds of Rhiannon".
As someone mentioned, the "Music Film Score " master reel was obtained by someone, and I have yet to come across anyone sharing anything better than you posted. Maybe it doesn't exist?? Mike B., I hate to drag you into this, but you seem well informed and are a refreshing wealth of info lately. Do you know if these are in circulation?
Esp. since great quality master reel demos have circulated on "Blue Water" (which was on the now infamous "Music Film Score" reel )& "Forsaken Love".

"The Maker of Birds" and "Forest of The Black Roses" I have the same as everyone else. Maureen is the one who circulated the better quality versions in 1998, and nothing better sounding has arisen since then. Not for a second.

I do not believe that any song we have heard is about that.

Stevie's writing is less straight-forward than that. If there were a song written about that topic, I think the words would be a lot more cryptic.

Does anyone know when Stevie recorded the 2 demos for "Lily' (Impossible Task)?
I have only heard 2 versions. The longer acoustic version & the muffled sounding, but more fleshed out version, that builds w. keyboard/synthesizer and drum machine.

I love this song & wish Stevie had pursed it to completion. It's very emotional and has a compelling narrative (which I know was inspired by the 1977 movie "Julia"). I don't know why, but I always just assumed this was a demo for TOSOTM, But it also sounds like her RAL era voice.

Also, who knows when the outtake's for "What Has Rock n' Roll Ever Done For You" & "Tied Up In Promises" were recorded?

It seems logical that these were some of the RAL era outtakes that was shelved in 1984, when Jimmy left, and Stevie took another direction. Also, I believe Stevie offered up WHRREDFY to FM for "Tango" along with "Juliet", & "Joan Of Arc", which surprises me because it really REALLY sounds like a solo song. I cannot even imagine what it would sound like if FM had recorded it.

And finally when was the "Secret Love" demo recorded, it sounds like "Castaway" keyboards so I'm thinking 77'-78"???

mikebise

I was told "Impossible Task" was from the Rock A Little era. However, listening to that second version just now that you mentioned, the guitar sounds like the guy from Venice who played on several demos. Stevie met him in 1989... So, I have no idea. Now I would put it in 1991 with "The Mix-Down" and "The Dance".

"Secret Love" was on Almanac in Autumn 1978, so your instincts are correct.

"Tied Up (In Promises)" is Rock A Little for sure, but I've always wondered why Stevie recorded a 1982 Olivia Newton-John single.

I am not sure if "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?" was recorded in time for Rock A Little; it could have been. For some reason, I think of it in that burst of creativity Stevie displayed stemming from her February 1986 tour of Australia with Tom & Bob:

Whole Lotta Trouble
You Like Me
Two Kinds of Love
Juliet

Just guessing, of course. But the lyrics seem to suggest Tom & Friends.

Without a doubt WHRREDFY has to have been an RAL-era demo. It seems that she had not fully embraced that brash eighties sound completely until 1984 or so. Plus, RAL was the era marked by long, unwieldy song titles, e.g., "One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star" and "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You."

Also, since "Juliet/Book of Miracles" shares a co-writing credit with Lindsey, I suspect that it was something that was cooked up in the studio during the TITN sessions. In the working demo with Lindsey (which is one of my all-time favorite demos, evah!) you can clearly hear how tentative and embryonic the song is at that stage.

Ugh... that one. Judging from the listless, honking quality of her voice on that one, I would be inclined to think it's from the OSOTM - Timespace era. What stands out on this song for me was the dreadful, monotonous vocal contrasted with the colorful, buoyant guitar riffing in the background- almost like someone was trying to channel Jimi Hendrix. I always found that to be kind of amusing.

"The Dance" is copyrighted 1991. Lyrics by Stevie, music by Mike Campbell.

Stevie gave LB co-credit for "Book of Miracles" only, as it was how he changed up the music differently than the way she wrote "Juliet". Stevie has sole writing credit for "Juliet", music and lyrics. The music on the FM Tango version is identical to her music on OSOTM as well as the original demo.

"Book of Miracles" was changed significantly, so Stevie gave partial musical credit away.

But not for "Juliet" itself, whether solo or recorded with FM.

All of Stevie's Tango songs, excluding "Welcome To The Room... Sara", were pre-Betty Ford. Before the Red Rocks concert, Stevie said 5 of her songs had been recorded and the album was finished. "Seven Wonders", "Joan of Arc" and "Juliet" were recorded before the Rock A Little tour started, as mentioned in one of the old Stevie fanzines in 1986.

Hmm. And here I was under the impression that 'Joan of Arc' was a song about detox, so I placed it in the immediate post-Betty Ford period but prior to the 'Tango' tour.
How about 'I Call You Missing'? Is that a Mirror, Mirror/RAL outtake, or is it around the Betty Ford period?

mikebise

The "Joan of Arc" outtake from Tango is dated January 1986. There are 2 demos that preceded this in 1985.

Also, "I Call You Missing" was on Atlantic pre-release track listings of Rock A Little in 1985. The old Stevie fanzine Dreams had it on the track listing in Early 1985, along with "Chanel, Chanel", "Thousand Days", "Mirror, Mirror", "One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star" and others.

I've never heard of anyone having the Rock A Little version, but it was on pre-release track listings back before the album came out.

I wish I had it!!!!!

Rock A Little[/I] for sure, but I've always wondered why Stevie recorded a 1982 Olivia Newton-John single.

Yep, I always thought this was strange as well. Especially when TOSOTM came out and I saw "Cry Wolf" on the back cover and thought to myself this cant possibly be the Laura Branigan song.

Well, obviously I was wrong...

Mike,

What is You Like Me?

The Fall of 1987 I had bought Laura's album with "Cry Wolf" (and "Whatever I Do, Wherever I Go" ~ the Hazell Dean cover, and "Shattered Glass"), and then in February 1988, I was undergoing Air Traffic Controller training in Oklahoma City. I had this dream that Stevie covered "Cry Wolf"!

In my dream, Stevie's vocals were very "When I See You Again", very Red Rocks (because that concert had just premiered on Showtime in Feb 1988). I was SO surprised when The Other Side of The Mirror came out and "Cry Wolf" was listed and STUNNED when it actually was the Laura Branigan song. But Stevie's vocals weren't quite as ragged as my dream...

Some of the outtakes of it are, though... ;)

Stevie wrote "You Like Me" in 1986, and the Williams Bros. covered it and released it on their album in July 1987 (along with their version of "Some Become Stangers", the song they wrote). (Mike Campbell wrote the music and plays guitar on the Williams Bros. version).

NO ONE I know of has Stevie's version of "You Like Me", but it is an AMAZING SONG!!!!! Even just hearing the cover.

Bitter, snippy, taunting, conceited... SO many emotions Stevie runs through in that rocking song!

"You Like Me"
Stevie Nicks/Mike Campbell

Don't read your words into my words
Don't let the weight on your shoulders pull you down
No matter what you heard
Don't you believe everything that goes around
Oh, your rage I see through

You like me, don't you
You can't hide the feeling
Your lies I see through
You like me, don't you

Don't read your words into my words
Remember the words...don't do it
Wrote me a letter of hate or of love
Well, I could do without it
You stand there and accuse me
And you want to know "Who is it?"
Well, you ought to know who is it
Oh, your rage I see through

You like me, don't you
No, you can't hide the feeling
Your eyes I see through
You like me, don't you

Never say I don't need you to love me
'Cause I need you to love me
And as hard as I try...
You know you can't hide the feeling

You like me, don't you?
You like me, don't you?
You can't hide the feeling
(You can't hide the feeling)
Your eyes I see through
(Your eyes I see through)
You like me, don't you
(You like me, don't you)
You like me, don't you
(You like me, don't you)
But you can't hide the feeling
(You can't hide the feeling)
Your eyes I see through
(Your eyes I see through)
You like me, don't you
You like me, don't you
You like me, don't you
You like me, don't you

Oh, well your rage, I see through
You like me, don't you?
But you can't hide the feeling
Well, your eyes I see through
You like me, don't you?

I wish "Some Become Strangers" was not one of my favorite songs on RAL since she didn't write it but if you love a song you love it. It really is a phenomenal song and should have been released as a single. For some reason it makes a huge difference to me if Stevie wrote a song as opposed to someone else writing it or her collaborating. I just can't feel the same way about a song if she recorded it but didn't write it. Does this make sense? Anyone?

oh absolutely! Easily my favorite off of RAL

"Part of me used to love you, part of me still does..."

LOOOVE IT! It just saddens me that i'm not listening to STEVIE'S genius....y'know?

...it's my ringtone...hehe:D

Yes, I feel the same way about "Call On Me For Magic". I love Stevie's voice!

But even if she didn't write three other songs on Trouble in Shangri-la, it's hard for me to include "Call On Me For Magic" in a collection of the era, no matter how much I like it.

Which is weird, since Stevie's voice is so beautiful on the song. But I get more out of a song that tells a little bit more about her life. I know it's strange.

It's nothing that I didn't know... ;)

Check out Laura Branigan's "Cry Wolf". It's actually not as bad as I would have thought. Doesn't compare to Stevie's but I'm not biased or anything ;). Too bad Laura died from a brain aneurysm. She had a beautiful voice. I love her song "Self Control".

Oh that's great to know others adore it as much as I do! I can honestly listen to that song like 15 times over and not get bored of it. When you think about it though the lyrics are very Stevie:
Thing is
Time was
Part of me used to love you
Part of me still does
This light here
Some become stranger

Best part of the song...BABY YO, BABY YO (you're no stranger not that I am).

Here's a funny story: I emailed the guy who wrote Call On Me For Magic recently letting him know how awesome it was that Stevie recorded his beautiful song. I also congratulated him on his work on Love changes on TISL and he wrote back: "Thanks. What's TISL?"

Hey, Stevie made up THAT part of the song!!!!!

Plus, Stevie changes some of the lyrics, so it's been Stevie-ized!!!

All that "Go on, take your soul away, stranger!" stuff is made up by Stevie. "I don't really need this in my life! Why don't we forget about it?" Pure Stevie, no Williams Brothers there!

Plus the extra ad libs on the outtakes!

"I'm not any stranger than you are!"

Totally Agree!!! plus she added the great kiss-off lyric "I don't really need you in my life....why don't we forget about it!!!!"
I'm surprised Stevie didn't try to hijack a co-writer copyright ala "Seven Wonders" "All the way down to Emmiline", She must have been in a generous mood LOL!

The Williams Brothers version is a totally different vibe, less funky, more linear and melancholy, and doesn't pack the wallop that Stevies does! Also consider Stevie only covers a song that captures exactly what she would have written anyway, with few exceptions. Remember the whole "Reconsider Me" fight she had w/ Jimmy, saying she would never say those words....never write that sentiment in a song. Of course Stevie was a speeding, out of control, freight train by that time in her career. Love the RAL era!!!.... All those crude and killer kiss-off lyrics.
"If you tell me, One more time.....Oh baby, take it easy. Well, you won't see me ever again!"
"Have Fun, TELL THE WORLD!"

This is a great song!! I Love it, and it always saddened me that Stevie did not record it, (unless it's in the vault somewhere) esp. in that RAL tour era voice ....she's be spitting nails and growling through these lyrics. The song is a very uptempo rocker!!

I worked in a record store when the self-titled "Williams Brothers" cd came out. It had a little buzz behind it, and was produced by Patrick Leonard of then "Madonna "True Blue" fame and Mike Campbell. I need to dig this out....It's probably in a box in my basement.

In Rolling Stone's review of their album, they specifically mentioned the rocker written by Stevie Nicks, so that's how I knew to get the album back then in July 1987. Plus, their version of "Some Become Strangers" was on it as well.

I wonder just how many copies of the Williams Brothers' 1987 LP were bought by Stevie Fans, strictly for the purpose of hearing a new Stevie Song (LIKE ME!)? :)
