View Full Version : What if Stevie and Lindsey had dated in High School?

I just had a thought. As most fans know, Stevie and Lindsey did not actually start dating until after Fritz broke up, or at least, during Fritz's "last hurrah." They met at an evening religious gathering at somebody's house - sang together - didn't really speak again until years later. Apparently, after Mr. Buckingham died, Lindsey even moved into Stevie's house for awhile. (And I think maybe the idea
is that Mr. Nicks helped him a bit to "get his wings flapping again.") But nothing was really "going on" until the Buckingham/Nicks era. So I wanted to ask you guys what you think - - - -

How would Fleetwood Mac have been different if Stevie and Lindsey HAD dated in high school? (And maybe through the Fritz years.)
It seems pretty feasible to me - They had already met at a party, they went to the same school, clearly there was a certain physical attraction. How would this have changed things? After all, the "drama" of their relationship has led to a lot of great songs - "That is how Rumours are started..." Would FM have even made it beyond an album or two? Or would S & L have even moved out to California as a duo in the first place? How would it have affected Stevie's solo career? (etc.) Would love to have everyone's thoughts on this.

I have a feeling that if they had dated they would have gotten married and never have gone into the music industry. Stevie would have had about 3 or 4 kids with Lindsey. The kids would all be late 30's to early 40's now. Maybe in the mid 80's there was a surprise baby before Stevie had the "change of life" and LB had to get snip-sniped. LB and SN would be grandparents now and depending on how busy their oldest kids are possibly great grand parents! Stevie will have totally let herself go and would be the "plump old woman" she is on the inside. LB would have gone totally gray years ago, and spend most his spare time on his project muscle car in the garage while listening to the Beach Boys.

I think some of this story is off -- after all Stevie's recently been saying she and Lindsey were living together in a house in Los Gatos in 1969 before they ever moved to LA. Obviously they weren't just "working on music" on the mattresses on the floor in the room with lace and paper flowers... just sayin'... :wavey:

But, I don't think much would have changed...

During early interviews (early '80s, say), Stevie said that she and Lindsey did not start dating, at all, until they moved to LA. She even told a whole story once about losing her virginity to him at some motel in (or near) L.A.

(I'm not all that familiar with the geography of California - - - but I believe Los Gatos is quite close to L.A.
So when a New Yorker like me says "they moved to L.A.," for me it's the same as Stevie saying she lived in "Phoenix" when it was really Paradise Valley, 5 or 10 miles away. So actually, I think we're pretty much on the same page here.)

Los Gatos is in the Bay Area, which is approximately 400 miles away from Los Angeles.

Well, perhaps Stevie's memory was a little . . . hazy . . . during that particular interview. ..........

Lindsey took stevie's virginity...i knew it...that would definitly explain why he has such a hold over her all theese years.

All I know is she was very specific the entire Unleashed Tour -- giving the whole spiel of the newly revised SnL history during her "Gypsy" intro. She didn't sound hazy about it to me -- she was pretty detailed and lucid actually; even deliberate. Meanwhile, I always thought it was fishy they claimed to never be together before 1971 anyway... the guys in Fritz knew they were together so...

Could be...

I have always suspected this too, and it makes sense.

Are you sure about that virginity thing? I would be shocked if Stevie ever spoke about that. As for Lindsey, it seems she's always made it clear that he wasn't her first love and I would assume that he wasn't her first lover, 'cause otherwise she would have said so, given the way she likes to romanticize things.

I think the only thing she said about them being together was that they were feeling bad over having to dump the Fritz guys so they started, um, comforting one another in their grief.

I don't think she would have admitted he was her first lover. Since she nor Lindsey never admitted they were living together before the whole Fritz demise, then it stands to reason that they have been selective and secretive even about what aspects of their relationship they are willing to share.

if stevie and lindsey first met at some religous gathering back in the mid 60's then would it be safe
to assume that most of the females were raised in a christian/catholic family and parents back
then were more involved in their kids lives unlike today? Hard to say who was stevie's first but
if it was lindsey then it make alot of sense. I dare anyone to ask stevie directly the next time she anwsers questions on her webpage.

I would but I don't think it's a sure thing that the old-age home I'll be in will allow residents to have Internet access.

here are some good interviews from pacheco from Fritz for people interested in that period. you certainaly won't get a good impression from stevies interviews, they change every year and lindsey doesnt seem to care too much.

some interesting comments i got

" Stevie came into the band through Bob Aguirre, not Lindsey. I don't think Lindsey knew her before she entered the group. As far as your last question, I don't know about that, wasn't there. I never heard that version of their meeting. Where did you hear that?"

Stevie has said in many interviews that she and Lindsey were thrown together because the record company was trying to break up Fritz, but that is not the impression I get from your responses to the previous questions. Do you remember when they actually got involved romantically, and do you have any idea what the catalyst for their romance was? (Tracy G., Stockbridge, GA, USA)

"They were already an item way before the onslaught of Los Angeles and the record execs. I don't understand why she'd say that. I don't really know about the catalyst. Stevie and Lindsey seemed to be the most compatible. Look at their birth signs. I never imagined they could get hot and steamy cuz Linds had a prior girlfriend who was a childhood sweetheart, Sally Durbin. Everybody thought he was going to eventually marry her. But then, suddenly its Stevie and Lindsey! Bye-bye Sally.
This happened months, maybe a year before the band was exposed to the Los Angeles record people."

Ok--sorry for sounding like a tabloid, but inquiring minds do want to know! From other interviews with Stevie and/or Lindsey, it sounded like they hooked up romantically AFTER Fritz was disbanded. You have stated that they were a couple while Fritz was still together. So, considering the "competition" between the guys of the group, how was their relationship brought up? Was it obvious, or was there a big Lindsey speech (which we all love dearly) declaring that he was now with Stevie and everyone better back off? (Obviously, you don't have to answer this if you don't want to...but, I'd be eternally grateful!) (Regina, Bronx, NY, USA)

There was no on-going competition to court Stevie. I’ve already addressed this. Lindsey did not make a speech, there was no rousing party, everything was kept very discreet. At first they didn’t make their pairing a big deal, but it became a big deal once we got into the decision mode: whether or not to follow David Forest’s manipulative pull to take opportunities in Los Angeles (since we were kept in the dark about Graham’s interest, it was easy to assume we’d have a better chance in L. A.). Then there were differences during the negotiating phases between our S.F. lawyer and the new L.A. management, the consideration of recording possibilities, and deciding the overall fate of the group. That’s where we went through the most crucial divisiveness. We could have decided to stick it out and record our material with RCA (they were interested in recording us) but Lindsey and Stevie were (thanks to the sneaky encouragement they had received) anxious to chuck it all and rush down do their duo thing in Los Angeles.

The statement that you made about Brian writing a song about the SN&LB leaving where the lyric was straight on about Stevie ...Did she "really ruin everything she touched"...were you guys resentful because she broke up the "dude" bond?...Do you think Brian resented the fact that Stevie put a "wedge" between the guys and the fact that he was the key to getting her into the band and then he was left high and dry? (~Laura~, Morristown, TN)

Well, I think Brian was the most bitter about Stevie playing everyone of us, and he saw this messing around as just a way for her to consolidate her position in the band. In the earlier discussion about courting I forgot to include him as another member who went out with Stevie. That’s right. I think she started with him. He was the first! I don’t know the details, but I know their courting lasted much longer than mine. We weren’t resentful that she broke up the “dude bond,” we were resentful that she broke up the band, period. There was no attempt to salvage anything. Her ambition included swallowing Forest’s lies, hook, line and sinker; pushing for the move to Los Angeles; pulling for the Shiffman and Larson lopsided publishing deal; discarding all we had worked for.
I mentioned elsewhere that my reservations were I thought her voice couldn’t handle the material. Well, now with FRITZ gone she didn’t have to worry about any of that, she was in a place where she would have more control than ever before.
