If you want to stay in state, I'd check out Lehigh and Allegheny. Maybe Point Park as a back up?

Go with your gut... Don't do what I did and go where your parents say you "have to go" (unless they're paying for it! ha!) I've been to 4 diff colleges in my... tenure ;)

If you can get in, go for Penn State. It's an Ivy level state school on par with Michigan, Texas, Virginia and California. Bonus: Penn State has a great football tradition and fills a 100,000+ stadium every week.

No way!

There's only one, and it's where the Crimson Tide plays.

 Incorrect. And this is coming from the daughter and best friend of PSU grads.

EDIT:

They are, however, the number 1 party school in the nation.

It's not true that Penn State is on par with Cal, UVA, Texas, etc. The honors college classes/average student might compare to those at the schools listed, but it's just not the case for the general student body.

Denison University, Granville, OH.

I think Penn is a pretty good school. Most of the Big 10 Universities are solid academic institutions.

Aww, I'm sorry. I thought you were responding to the first part of my post.

So do I :) I have my Penn State sweats on right now, and I would have KILLED to have been able to go to THON last weekend up at main campus. It's just not on the same par as the other schools it was compared to, and since this is about a kid in PA trying to pick the best school for him, I felt like I had to be honest about that.

There are two separate schools. "Penn" is the private University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and is an "Ivy League" school along with Harvard, Yale, Princeton et al.

Penn State University is public in central PA and is in the Big Ten conference

I know. I didn't think anyone was talking about the University of Pennsylvania in this thread though, so I figured everyone would know what I meant.

Maris, I almost applied to Allegheny....

Okay, as you know, I'm in the college application process right now. Just so you have an idea of the schools I personally like, I applied to:

New York University (New York City, NY)
Kenyon College (Gambier, OH)
Dickinson College (Carisle, PA)
Wagner College (Staten Island, NY)
Emerson College (Boston, MA)
Seattle University (Seattle, WA)
Santa Clara University (Santa Clara, CA)
University of San Francisco (San Francisco, CA)
Boston University (Boston, MA)
Colby College (Waterville, ME)
Colgate University (Hamilton, NY)
Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH)
Occidental College (Los Angeles, CA)
Randolph College (Lynchburg, VA)
Sweet Briar College (Sweet Briar, VA)
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (San Luis Obispo, CA)
San Francisco State University (San Francisco, CA)

I have already been accepted to the bolded schools. Randolph and Sweet Briar have given me giant merit/athletic scholarships (equestrian). Yay. Right now, my top choices are Kenyon and NYU but I'm into Emerson which is my 3rd favorite, so I'm gonna be fine.

Okay, but here are my questions for you. How far are you willing to travel for college? Do you want a bigger or smaller school? What matters most to you out of your college experience?

Also, I just want to remind you that you WILL BE FINE and you WILL GO TO COLLEGE. I needed someone to tell me that five times a day this time last year

Ha...my ex went to (then subsequently worked at) Kenyon. I applied and was accepted to Kenyon too, but ended up going to one of Kenyon's big rivals, Denison. We got our digs in to each other fairly often :-)

:woohoo:

I managed to get to two games this year. Looked into getting SEC tournament tickets, but they're $2000 + on ebay.

That's the Makers Mark UK coach collection. :) Makers did a Tubby Smith edition a few years ago. Billy Clyde was passed over for obvious reason.

I think it really depends what you're looking for in a school. What you want to study, what kind of campus you want, how many students, etc.

I went to a fairly small liberal arts college (Marist) and that was perfect for me. I'm glad I chose NOT to go to a school that had a huge student body. I knew pretty much everyone in my major and I was really involved on campus in the student government. I also was able to live in campus housing all four years and be physically ON the campus, less than five minutes from all the classroom buildings, which was perfect for me.

I also think it's kind of important to get an idea of what you want before you start applying. There's no point in applying to schools that you don't really see yourself going to or don't have the programs you want. I had a fairly good idea of what I was looking for and instead of making the decision harder for myself by applying to any school that fit into those specifics, I chose a small handful. I think that really eases up the application process as well as the waiting and seeing process. I ultimately ended up applying to a few "categories" of schools and when I heard back, it really made deciding which to attend much easier.

Dani yeah its really stressful :P

I think I'm gonna end up choosing Pitt, my grades are on for it and I have a bunch of extra curriculars, community service, and I work 20+ hours a week.

Plus its one of the leading schools for medicine.

but idk.
I'll keep you guys posted :P

I was SO CLOSE to applying to Denison but by the time I got to that application, I'd already applied to ten thousand schools and didn't feel like doing another essay

I went to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. (www.usp.edu) They have a pre-med track, campus is small, and there aren't a ton of students. And its a trolley ride away from the city!
