I have wanted to start a thread about this song for a long time. I remember when I was little my mother told me not to listen to The Other Side of the Mirror because I wouldn't like it. Sadly, I took her advice. I had never heard this song until Stevie put it on Enchanted and I completely fell in love.
This song definitely falls into the 80's stereotype...but for this particular song I think all those aspects make the song better. I love the synths that are used in the verses. I think they add to the romance behind the song. Whenever I listen to this, I really do picture Stevie in this glorious castle with the man of her dreams, in a big glorious dress, slow dancing to this song. This song really does fit on TOSOTM, but I when I listen to it, I it takes a life of its own.
I think the chorus is just absolutely beautiful. Stevies voices meshes so well with Lori and Sharon and I think that this makes a big difference in the song. Ive heard the accapella demo reels and, Stevies vocals alone are good but with the added voices, the song just becomes magical.
I thought it was really cool of Stevie to recognize this song and put it on "Enchanted." We all know how she doesn't like this period in her life, so to recognize the greatness of this song and put it on "Enchanted" really says something. I also bum when I think of that photo from the "mirror" tour rehearsals. Knowing that they rehearsed "Ooh My Love" and "Long Way to Go" makes me want to hear the live versions so bad!!
Its so hard to pick out specific passages of the song that I like, because I really do love the whole thing. But I have to say my favorite line is:
"Well they just can't wait, can they? No they just can't wait..." Then the chorus kicks in. Always gives me chills!!

~ I feel this song. I had never really paid attention to it, untill i took one of those goofy internet surveys What stevie nicks song are you. This song came out as the result and I went to listen to it Right away, and like you was taken away to that romantic place somewhere off in the myst where i still like to believe that Stevie really resides. The layered chorus is awesomely beautiful, and i love the verse it starts out with ...in the shadow of the castle walls... but what really gets me is the "ooo and our separation way on down the line .... well they just cant wait can they? No they just cant wait. It is a perfect line to describe that relationship that things or others get in the way because they don't approve for whatever reason. ALSO at the end, i love the line "...No one can take you away from me, no. No one......in the shadow of the castle walls"
I always wanted to hear this song updated into the present with a bit newer touch. PARTS of the remix arent too bad. Like that piano that runs through it. Id like to hear a version of this song more like that.

I do love this song. It is sooo shamefully 80's and cheesy, but that's what I like about it.

Ooh My Love is the stand out track to 'side one' (old person here) of OSOTM, in my opinion. First off, I love the out of place funk, slapped-bass intro (she's an R&B girl). It works. There's a bunch of stuff on this track that shouldn't work, but does...the vocals that, although seemed lively at the time, show glimpses of the lifelessness that impacted that period (although I think she enjoyed arranging all those harmonies that, at times, are quite tasty and worth listening closely to). How that lazy, lazy drumbeat doesn't make me get stuck in the mud is beyond me? The cheesy crunch guitar, the cheesy chimey guitar, the fart-y synths, the repetitive ending, the almost stereotypical stevie-ish lyric imagery...why does it all work for me? It does, and that she put it on Enchanted says, to me, that it works for her as well.

Good song, but she should have recorded it in 1985.

I would also like to say that I've always loved this song. I think it was her best song from her album. To me, it's a " catchy tune ". I don't feel it's a classic, but I definetly love the vibe that this song gives me. It is a feel good, get up, keep going kind of song. I know this isn't a serious disection of the lyrics or melody, but this is simply how I feel about it. Feelings and vibes are important too.

I think it's one of the least "80s cheese" songs on the album (which admittedly may not be saying much). At any rate, I've always loved it. This and Rooms on Fire are the only really great songs on TOSOTM, to me. The clearest vocal on the album, by far. Love, love, love it.

Love this song - one of my favorites on the album - but I do love this album, always have, always will...

I'm an unapologetic worshipper of The Other Side of The Mirror, and "Ooh My Love" has always been one of my favourite songs!
I have two favourite parts where Stevie's vocals chill me in a good way: First, the second "There was a light that lighted the way..." which Stevie sings so deeply, and then overdubs herself higher. As always, Stevie's sense of harmony is brilliant!
The other part I just die for is where Stevie's voice catches when she sings, "Ooh, eh-hey, baby, no one can take you away from me... no one..." I LOVE THAT!!!!!! Great emotion from Stevie!
This is clearly a song she loved writing and singing!!!

I like Ooh My Love, and have always really liked the album. In fact, I think the multitude of well-written songs on the album make it the best representation of Stevie the lyricist from all of her solo releases- there's no 'That Made Me Stronger' on 'The Other Side of The Mirror!'
Track by track: Rooms On Fire- intricate lyrics, well written, Long Way To Go, to me, is a really great vocal with well-defined anger in a tightly-written lyric, and it's close to a home-run, overall. Two Kinds of Love wasn't a favorite of mine, but the lyrics are a glimpse into her life and it's written well; it was just a horrid, horrid choice for a single.
Ooh My Love- well, it was the one song in the Rolling Stone review that was hailed as the best cut on the album, and it is well-crafted and enjoyable, thus this thread:)
I think Ghosts is breathtaking. Whole Lotta Trouble was Stevie having a lot of fun, and much of the song works- this is one instance where I would have loved for it to have been a Fleetwood Mac song, but I appreciate it for what it is. Fire Burning-- nothing wrong at all with this song; she didn't write Cry Wolf, but I think it's a great performance, Alice is gauzy and overblown, but the lyrics are just fine, I just don't care for the draggy melody (which was written by Rubert Hine). Juliet is sublime. Doing The Best That I Can, to me, is far more of a 'masterpiece' than anything on 'Trouble In Shangri La'-- and the faux-reggae cover of Johnny Cash's " I Still Miss Someone", well, it's pretty, and for the romanticists here on The Ledge, it's a nice torch-twang Lindsey tribute and a good way to close out the album.
Of all of Stevie's albums, I can't go song by song, and really see where she ever had an album of better-written material than The Other Side Of The Mirror. She did some great writing on 'Mirror'. I think it really must be the recording and the production that many fans have trouble with, because the songs are all good songs, I think.
Your mother told you not to listen to The other side of the mirror?
"Don't be listening to that rock n roll music kid, it's gonna do you no good, rot yer brain"
'Ooh my love' is a perfect example of a song that's better that the title suggests.

That's interesting. I never would have thought of what this could be like as a Mac song, but then again, I never would have pegged EFO for a Mac song either and that turned out extremely well. Michele

That is SO true. I can already see that as a new thread "the song is better than the title suggests". lol but as far as ooh my love goes, It should have been called Castle Walls. And im sure in stevies mind, it probably is:lol::thumbsup:

Ooh My Love has always been a favorite of mine! OSOTM was my very first Stevie CD. Ever, so that and "Long Way To Go" were always playing in my room at full blast!
Some aspects that i love about it are:
- that opening bass groove! how epic!
- "and our separation way on down the line" - gorgeous!
- the whole bridge - i love how she sings "there was a light that lighted..."
- towards the end of the song where she sings..."oh hey baby no one can take you away from me..." - makes me cry
sooo basically now that song is on repeat...:D:nod:

You nailed it. All those things are what make it such a great song. And definitely one of the best on the record, up there with the likes of Rooms On Fire and Alice.
In particular, the opening bass groove. I first found this record when I was 15 and that slap bass intro just struck me as just obtuse and unattractive -- uncomfortable o the ear. But then, came this really rich, velvety, ebbing and flowing song.
I also like, "Watched from the corner of his --- eye...."
I remember once at a party, it was late in the evening, and a female friend of mine and I were in my bedroom. I was smoking, and she was pouring her heart out about why she hadn't shown up that night with her up-till-then man. The Other Side of the Mirror was playing on stereo, just by happenstance. I had only just found it, and I was having drinks, so, there it was. And this song, the chorus, the feeling, followed her narrative exactly. "He told me he didn't love me anymore", she said, as she finally broke down in one great big sob, her head falling into her hands. While Stevie said, "Oh-oh, but there was a time when -- he called her angel..." And I was really sad then, to watch her. And to have this kind of of, pulsating, musical heartbreak pop-symphonic, song in the background, was just something else. It really was a magical song.
Actually, this song is one of my top played on iTunes. But I must've listened to it a hundred more times since this thread has come up.
And I love your banner, by the way.

The thing about OSOTM for me is that I really have to be in the "Stevie" mood for it. When I am, it is classic! The thing that I've always noticed though is that there really is no lead guitar for any of the album. So if I'm wanting some really rocking music, this isn't the album, but if I'm totally captivate by Stevie's lyricism at the moment, it's a great album!!
