Well i know everyone has SOMETIME in their life, but I'm asking this question regarding Mac/SN:

you know the scenario: You're jamming out to this great song, singing along, when you realize you've been singing the wrong lyrics for years!

My personal experience with this has been on "That's All For Everyone"

the line: "Must be just exactly what i need"

i always thought was, "Must be just too sexy for my dreams"

and i was like, "Yeah Lindsey, Stevie's too sexy EVEN in YOUR DREAMS!":lol:

what are your Lyric mixups??

Yah, on Dreams :o

I thought it was, for years; Have you any dreams you'd like to share

I only worked out the right words to I Know I'm Not Wrong when I had Lindsey singing it three feet away from me!
I had been singing: "Her lips were waiting, her eyes looked set, the dreams of a lifetime, they ain't gone yet..."

Hope he didn't spot it :o

On a similar note, in the infancy of my fandom, I thought it was Stevie singing the chorus of Come, not Lindsey.

Uhhh I guess the same excuse? I only casually enjoyed The Dance, and SYW. So maybe I was expecting to hear Chris on SYW as well. And I guess that sounded like Chris' voice, more so than anything else on the album. I was surprised she would write such a song though.

And I was like 12 years old.

NO WAY?!?!? that's the lyrics of IKINW? I always thought it was,: "licks for a white guy, dried in sand, dreams of a lifetime, a year gone...bad!"

speaking of Come, (wow that sounded wrong), i always thought it was, "cursing off, everyone's doing it!"

and of course, i'm 8 yrs old and my mom's like, WTF?!?!?

On Red Rover, before I read the liner notes I thought he was talking about Christine leaving the group and that the lyrics were:

"Christine you were dying and no one was crying."

There's this Cadillac commercial that plays now that was driving me crazy, because I couldn't understand what they were singing in it. I remember at Thanksgiving I was playing it and asking everyone at dinner what they thought was being sung. Finally, I went online and found out they are using a song by Phoenix called 1901 and that the words on the commercial are "fold it, fold it, fold it."

That had been driving me crazy. After I heard the original song, I decided I liked the music in the commercial better!

I fell in love with 'Sleeping Angel' immediately but it took my friend Rea to tell me it was 'heavy spells' that Stevie was singing, I just didn't hear that correctly, I thought she was singing 'these love affairs are very scarce for a woman and a man'... "heavy spells" and "very scarce" shouldn't have sounded alike to me, but I blamed it on hearing with Euro-ears.
"Angel" from 'Tusk' was even more of a puzzle a few years earlier. 'Track a ghost through the fog' stumped me for the longest time. I didn't know what she was singing, but sort of settled on 'that we hold" for the first part, and 'through the fog' sounded, I thought and don't know why, like she was singing 'beautiful'.
(charmed hour and a haunted song...that we hold as beautiful")
I was so far off! When I eventually saw a 'Tusk' songbook with the lyrics, I was like, "oh, 'track a ghost through the fog'...I guess that's why the words 'Track a Ghost' are listed on an inside album sleeve with a bunch of other song titles."
For how elaborate the original 'Tusk' vinyl packaging was, the album really should have had the lyrics included!

I only play Vinyl, which I blame partly for me getting Dreams mixed up, dirty grimy records. When I first got Tusk I just turned to the shopkeeper and asked 'Is there reaaaaly any need for all this card?' and he replied 'Well, it's one album that the dust won't be able to get to'

Do you ever find yourselves singing the ad-libbed or demo lyrics when listening to the finished tracks? I'm so used to the live versions of Rhiannon, that I always end up throwing in extra lyrics when I sing along. Or again with Gold and Braid - I prefer the "his eyes, his fantasy" lyrics. Then all the versions of The Dealer...

Honestly, for the first year or so of my fandom, I thought that the majority of Stevie's songs sounded a big slurred mess :o Especially on Stand Back..

But now I can basically hear every word she says haha

That thing was horrible. Once you opened it, you could never put everything back the way it was. They should warn you to take pictures before you undo the packaging, because it will never be the same again. I love FM memorabilia, but there's just so many sleeves I can deal with for one album!

The enhanced SYW is just as bad. You just open the book and things fall out. I want to throw it against a wall.

I stopped using the Tusk album packaging for years. I just stuffed it under a bed, but then I started thinking as a "collector" rather than as someone who just wanted to hear the doggone record and I began to treat it with more care after that. Michele

It's embarassing to blurt out "Well-l-l, I don't think you do!" And have people look at you and conclude you just don't know the words to the song, even though you call yourself a fan.

I know when Lindsey's UTS tour started, I was used to singing Show You How one way and he changed the vocal arrangement for the live show. I hadn't lived with that single very long, because the album had only recently been released, so he easily tripped me up at the concert. Then, after I saw a few shows and downloaded a boot, I found that I started messing up the words when singing along to the record, because I was so used to the live version.

For many, many years, I misheard the lyrics for 'Edge of Seventeen'. Even though the lyric sheets say differently, I still think she says 'I've been searching for an answer, I've been standing down the hall'

I used to always think in Rooms On Fire she said, "It seemed to be the only thing that's died in the light." instead of "left out in the light".

My best friend thought it was "one winged dove" and I pointed out to her how silly that was, and then in college when we heard the song, she would do this stupid dance like she was flapping one wing.

Ahahaha! That reminds me of a guy I know who thinks Hendrix is saying "Scuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of "sky" in Purple Haze.

I remembered one that I heard wrong.. My Little Demon

My little demon's makin' me shoes
instead of
My little demon's makin' me choose

This is what sends me runnin' to the lyric sheet, I always have trouble with Lindsey and Stevie's pronunciation. Christine, not so much, though I did think she was saying "Cover your eyes, don't look at the day" in Don't Stop for a bit.

And Go Your Own Way, I thought he was saying something about thunder at first, like, "You can call it thunder, and go away"

ohmygod! yes! but sometimes they do that in their lyrics intentionally - i love it!

and another lyric boo-boo:

"Sisters of The Moon"

"any black willow, spider-man...."

instead of " and a black widow spider makes..."

and this isn't messing up lyrics, but i anticipate lyrics in songs...

for example, in "Whenever i Call You Friend"

"day by day, we can see..."

i hear the "day by day" and then just the "We" sound, so i logically think "week by week" and i sing that! It's so annoying cause i'm like, "Miranda that's not it!" so i kinda just make up lyrics to songs all the time!

That reminds me - on the Philly unleashed bootleg once Lindsey is starting to play big love a guy yells: "Woooorrrrrlllld TurrrrrNIN!"

Even now I still realize lyrics to certain songs. In Don't Stop, I thought it was "a lullaby for all the things that you've done" instead of "and not about.." And in Dreams I thought it was "in the stillness of her memory" instead of "remembering."

Speaking of Edge. At the beginning when Sharon and Lori sing,"everything's up." I always thought they were saying "everything sucks."

In the context of the song, it almost works.

I thought the same thing about GYOW! I thought it was "You can call it thunder on a lonely day"

It didn't make much sense, but I figured Stevie must have written it.

Most of the lyrics that I mishear are just small things that vaguely resemble the actual lyrics. For instance, in Dreams, I only just now discovered it’s not “in the stillness of the memory of what you had” but rather “in the stillness of remembering.” And Gypsy, of course, gave us “she was just a witch,” which has been mentioned.

But there are times when I’ve misheard things that are not particuarly in the ball park.

Ironically enough, in Paper Doll I always hear “we were Oscar Wilde,” but only in the first verse where she sings “we were off the wall.”

I couldn’t understand much of the lyrics in Fireflies at first, though I really liked the song. Best mishearing is “what caused the threesome voice in the night” instead of “fearsome” and “divorce.”

The first time I listened to I Don’t Want to Know I heard “finally naked” instead of “finally baby.”

Angel once gave me “I still hook up, I try hard not to hook up” rather than “look up.”

And even if I know the lyrics in Big Love are “in the night so still,” I keep hearing "looking out for love in a nice hotel."

ohmygod! yes! but sometimes they do that in their lyrics intentionally - i love it!

and another lyric boo-boo:

"Sisters of The Moon"

"any black willow, spider-man...."

instead of " and a black widow spider makes..."

In the next line after that, I always thought it was something about 'satin sheets' instead of 'more sound than she'.

I don't understand that, except for the fact that "mirror' is in Stevie's venacular. That assumed line makes no sense, even within her strange range of phrasing.

Stevie writes a lot in her bathroom. Rain= shower, fog= fog on your mirror after a hot shower, mirror= bathroom mirror. She goes around the country and world touring, "walking a thousand miles in a few weeks." But when she goes home, very little love exists there. As she is writing this in the bathroom she finds herself alone in this mirror, she is haunted in her mirror, because even thru the "rain" and the "fog", her mirror still hangs there showing her that she's the only one in the mirror, that she is alone. And this is when she cries "real tears". Or you could look at it from the perspective of this song being about drug rehab. There was very little love in the rain and the fog= her drug addiction. And her always hanging mirrors is the being constantly forced to look at herself and inside of herself in rehab to understand her addiction. And since she is constantly looking at herself, it is overwhelming and still burdensome and, but she is noticing "there was another girl, she was much like you" which is her starting to see in her the girl she was before the drugs.

I honestly can't make out what she says, mists or mirrors, but I do believe Stevie is such a beautifully insane poet that "mirrors" could definitely make sense to her.

Wow, you read alot of layers of depth into the lyrics; but I don't think Stevie ever thought that deep of those concepts/metaphors.

Here's my thing: In 1989 I bought a Japan-issued mini cd single of 'Long Way to Go because it included 'Real Tears." I don't dispute that some people hear and think that the lyric in question is the absurdly strange "always hanging mirrror." But as I stated before, look at the context of the verse! It describes an atmosphere -rain, fog and a hanging mist.

I just took the above stated cd and played with my headphone on, several times. Mirror or Mist? It's very clear that she sings a one syllable word (slighly pro-longed as she sometimes tends to do)...and at the end you hear an "s." There is absolutely no hint of an "r."

Strangely while I have been writing this, the TV weatherman mentioned the word 'Mist.' lol! So, I take this as cue as I get ready to walk a thousand miles, to be prepared to encounter rain and fog and an always hanging... mirror. ?

ok, well this isn't one about FM, but...

the Glenn Fry song, "You Belong To The City"

..."it's in your moves, it's in your blood."

i always thought it was:

..."it's in your boobs, it's in your butt."........yeahm that one's really weird, but i swear to god i heard that..

Here are the 2 FM ones that come to mind, but I have tons:

Go Your Own Way

Real line: "You can call it another lonely day"
What I heard: "You can call it thunder along the way"

You Make Loving Fun (my dad made fun of me so much when I heard this one)

Real line: "Don't break the spell
What I heard: "Don't break this bed"

I also got a few non-FM ones that are too funny to pass up. I tend to mishear tons of Van Halen lyrics (Dave or Sammy, it doesn't matter). Here's one to start:

Dance the Night Away

Real line: "Fooled me with her syle and ease"
What I heard: "Boobie with the stylin' ears"

My sister just sang Gypsy. "She was just irish"...

:] That is so funny. I remember my young sister singing 'Rock the Boat.' In the signature line 'And I'd like to know where you got the notion? my sister would sing 'And I'd like to know where you got the nose job.'

That still cracks me up.

Bump!

I was reminded of possibly my worst ever lyrics mix up when I listened to Go Insane this week.

The real lyrics to I Must Go are:

"If you're aching ... heart's braking"

I heard:

"If you're aching ... for (a) spanking"

:o

Well i know everyone has SOMETIME in their life, but I'm asking this question regarding Mac/SN:

you know the scenario: You're jamming out to this great song, singing along, when you realize you've been singing the wrong lyrics for years!

My personal experience with this has been on "That's All For Everyone"

the line: "Must be just exactly what i need"

i always thought was, "Must be just too sexy for my dreams"

and i was like, "Yeah Lindsey, Stevie's too sexy EVEN in YOUR DREAMS!":lol:

what are your Lyric mixups??

-Miranda

For a long time it was "You must be just too sexy for my knees."

"I would f*ck with an age old desire to be on the edge of 17."

And then, the ever popular "She was just a witch, she was just a witch." Even my little sister thought she was saying that haha.
