View Full Version : Besides SN/FM, is your fandom as intense for other performers?

My musical taste is very eclectic to say the least: Green Day, Loreena McKennitt, Lisa Loeb, Jason Mraz, classic country (Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, etc.), 70’s disco, 60’s tunes, Jefferson Airplane, and early Jefferson Starship – but Stevie and FM are still (and will be) my first love.

I can’t imagine going out of my way (for example, traveling far and shelling out the extra $$, which I have done before) to see any other singer/band.

So what else do y’all listen to?

I listen to other bands and I love to see other bands play live. I would never go as far out of my way (or pay as much) as I have for Fleetwood Mac. Unless John Lennon and George Harrison came back from the dead and The Beatles reunited. :)

The only other artists I've traveled to see besides Mac are Tom Petty & Patty Griffin.

Can't think of anyone else I've liked enough to spend as much money on as I have with Mac/Stevie/LB (and in retrospect, I probably didn't really need to see them 5 times in 1 tour either  )

There's no other artist that I know as much about/collect/buy most everything they release.

Speaking of Patti Griffin, does anyone have Downtown Church yet? I bought it this weekend and it's taking me a little while to get into it.

Her Soundstage with Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin , and Buddy Guy also premiered this week. I really enjoyed it. Patti did an awesome version of Heavenly Day.

Back on topic there is no other band beside Fleetwood Mac that I have spent so much time, energy, and money on!

I am mainly a Mac fan, but I also love Daryl Hall & John Oates!!! In the 80s, I didn't think much either way about them. They were good, you heard them often, but I never really paid attention. In the early 90s, it just hit me one day that I missed hearing Daryl and John, like 'hey, where did they go?' So, I bought some albums since radio wasn't playing them much. The more I heard, the more I liked. I know most people only know their early 80s pop, but they are worth listening to. Also, every month, Daryl Hall does a podcast called Live from Daryl's House. http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com It's often him and a newer singer together. It doesn't come off as a disaster like Taylor and Stevie though!! Take a listen! There's a new one every 15th of the month.

I got it. I saw her live on the 3 Girls & Their Buddy Tour last year & was blown away by the gospel tunes they did - which is why I'm a bit surprised that I'm iffy on the new CD. I don't dislike it, but I am slightly disappointed. I am hoping it will grow on me, but I'm not getting chills or close to tears (like I did with Trapeze or Up To The Mountain on Children Running Through.) So I guess, to sum up, I agree with you. :wavey:

And thanks for the reminder about Soundstage.

Thievery Corporation

Ursula 1000
Grant-Lee Phillips

I can't say that my fandom for Journey (80s era) is "intense," but just the same, I think the WORLD of their music!!! :D I think they're just about the best rock band that I've ever seen.

Ditto for The Scorpions (except for one or two songs). I think they're amazingly talented - even though I've never even been to one of their concerts.

And while I've never really followed U2 all that much, I just absolutely think the world of them. :)

So I guess overall it couldn't be called "intense," but if I were to like, "rank" things on a piece of paper from a scale of 1 to 100, those three would be somewhere around 1,000 or so. ;)

Joseph Arthur is a very definite favorite.

I've enjoyed following Sheryl Crow, and seeing what she has to say next, since the beginning.

Fleetwood Mac was one of the first bands I was really actively into, in the sense of collecting as much music as I could get my hands on, concert videos, solo careers, whatever info I could find, traveling to a different tour city so I could get more than one concert in. They're also one of the only things that has stuck with me for such a length of time.

REM was my next big thing after my Fleetwood Mac thing started to calm down a little in high school and I liked them much in the same way. Acquired all their albums, concert videos, bootlegs, learned as much as I could about them, etc. Trekked to see them live and have seen them whenever they've come to town since. For the most part though, I've become a more casual fan over the years.

The only other band that I am as involved in liking (and a bit more so) is Hanson. Like FM, I have their whole discography, I've traveled to see them, have seen them numerous times on the same tour, have met them through meets and greets and have even gone to special events they put on for their fan club members, including one where they invited 750+ plus fans to their hometown and recorded a live acoustic album. I've been a fan of them for as long as FM, almost thirteen years and part of what keeps them so easy to stay immersed in is their accessibility. They've always got something going on and are in touch with the fans and always get some new music out each year.

I love live music and going to concerts, so there are a lot of other bands that I consider myself an active fan of without considering myself "involved" with being a fan. Outside of these, there's Kings of Leon, O.A.R., Sister Hazel, Steel Train, fun., NeedToBreathe, Marc Broussard, the list in pretty endless. And I really, really loved the Bee Gees for awhile and still consider them an alltime fave. :)

My favorite BY FAR. I'm not saying other bands aren't amazing, but they all pale in comparison. The epitome of what good rock and roll should be. Great songs, raucous shows...Hell, even Piss and Puke buckets. If you don't have a good time at a Bob Pollard show, you're simply not trying.

The person I have seen the most after FM/SN/LB is Billy Joel. I think I have seen him about 6 or 7 times (he is great live!). He and Blondie (who I have only seen live once, but they are my second fav band) and Springsteen(seen live 4 times) are the only musicians I would say that I like as close to the level that I like FM/SN/LB... make sense?

If I had top pick another 10 (along w/ if I've seen them) :

Tom Petty (2x)

Well, I'm one of those people, they way I'm wired, I have an intense passion for a few things, and it is really hard for me to really get into other artists. Of course Fleetwood Mac has been a favorite for over 30 years, but the Stereophonics, who's picture of myself and the band is in my sig, has come the closest to approaching the passion I have for Fleetwood Mac. I have only seen the Stereophonics 2 times, once in Minneapolis at a club called First Avenue in 2005, and in 2008 in Washington D.C at a place called Club 9:30. I also am a big fan of The Sundays, but Ive only seen them once, in 1997 at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

I dont think I'm as obsessed with anyone as much as Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac - Think my friends are tired hearing about it!!! lol

The only other bands that I think are almost as good would be:

1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - This band can be so musically intense. Here Springsteen has got probably some of the greatest musicians working with him. Credit to Roy Bittan who played with Stevie for Bella Donna. This band can move you to tears with songs like 41 Shots @ live in New York and then become something almost spirirtual with songs like Mary's Place & 10th Av. Freezeout. Or just a simple rock-out with the classics and some lesser known greats.

2. Elton John (and his band too) - Althouth Stevie and The Mac have written some amazing songs in their day, Elton and Bernie together could put up qutie a challenge. Again we have songs of great emotion musically and lyrically (Your Song, Candle in the Wind, The way you look tonight) and just a good old rock-out with "The Bitch is Back" etc.

3. The Eagles - It easy to see why the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac were always chasing each other for No. 1. The harmonies between each of the guys on many songs are great whilst like the Mac each member can hold his own too. The storytelling of Lyin Eyes etc is exceptional.

Other Notable Artsists would be - Aerosmith, Annie Lennox (amazing song-writer), Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, Oasis, Phil Collins, Police, Queen, Tina Turner & U2.

I'm definatley too old before my time; Most of my favs were at their peak before i was born (Im only 19)!!!!!! - sorry for the length of this. lol

I guess that my Bob Dylan obsession is similar to my FM obsession, the only difference being is that there is one of him and 16 of FM members so it appears that I like Fleetwood Mac related stuff a lot more.

I guess if I had to choose between seeing Bob Dylan and seeing Fleetwood Mac then I'd choose Dylan every time.

I love FM and all that, but nothing quite speaks to me like a good Bob Dylan lyric...

Robbie Robertson - Current Favorite: opening for 2002 winter olympics but he's done a lot

Just listened to the Little Village album for the first time in quite awhile (since I just loaded it onto my iPod)...forgotten how good that album is. Amazing band, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, Jim Keltner...easily defines "supergroup". Too bad they didn't get the recognition they should've.

I saw John Hiatt when he was a member of Ry Cooder's band back in '83, when Ry opened for Eric Clapton. That was a great night for guitar lovers!

Also, just loaded Robbie's first solo album on the ol' iPod, too....that is one fantastic album...every song just hits home. "Sweet Fire Of Love", "Somewhere Down The Crazy River", "American Roulette" are just the tip of the iceberg.

I've been really into her music since I was about 11 (whilst I've been around FM's longer, I didn't start listening to them properly until I was about 13) and I think she's the greatest female artist.

Also up there for me would be Tori Amos, Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine), Peter Gabriel and Bat For Lashes.

Me too! I could start my own Netflix with my personal horror DVD collection, but I won't, because they're MINEALLMINE. I also collect posters & action figures & suchlike. My current fav is my 18 inch motion-activated talking Pinhead dolly. He's awesomesauce.

And I collect books and other goodies from my fav authors.

But, anyway, when it comes to music specifically:

My largest collection is definitely my FM-related stash. But I love a lot of different music, and one of my favorite things to do is to go to shows. There have been several artists that I love enough that I have traveled out of state and/or country to see, like Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I also have memorabilia collections for each of those artists. Just nowhere near as big as my Mac collection.

I would also travel wherever necessary to see anything Mike Patton related, so I've been incredibly angsty over the Faith No More reunion tour, as I've been way too broke to fly overseas to see them. Fortunately, I hear they are finally going to do a US leg this summer, so now I won't have to cry myself to sleep anymore.

But if you're reading this, General Patton (and of course you are, because where else would you spend your time, except on a Fleetwood Mac fan forum?), Bucharest can't love you more than I do, so you better get your ass over here for sure.

I love a lot of other bands, too, but can't think of any others that I would break my neck to see.

Oh, and I saw the fabulousness that is Morris Day and the Time in Canadia, but that was just sheer luck, since that was the weekend I was in Toronto to see Leonard Cohen. Best weekend ever maybe? I think yes.

Well, after seeing the concert of 15 Dec in Brisbane I almost couldn't listen to anything on the radio without thinking about FM... until "The Price Of Love" by Bryan Ferry came on! Lately I've been returning to normality and listening to music on my favourite radio station (which regularly plays FM and Roxy Music) without pining for FM... although I'll admit the volume's always turned up when FM come on! (And another thing - one presenter on the late night shift always refers to FM as "The Mighty Fleetwood Mac" after playing any of their songs! I love it every time he says it!)
So, back to the question - no! But some that come close, at least lately if not usually, are:

John Lennon (& The Beatles, although lately I can't help but think of JL's solo work whenever I hear them, and how much more I enjoy that over the fab four)
Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music
Sting & The Police
The Doors
Dire Straits
Toto
The Moody Blues
ELO
Billy Joel
The Motels (I only discovered just how awesome they are very recently)

Damn, this list feels so incomplete!

I have to ask, what were you doing in Amy Grant's driveway!!?? I love her! I have really eclectic music tastes, and Amy Grant is one of the artists I'm crazy about. I didn't really get seriously into Fleetwood Mac until college, so growing up in middle school and high school it was all about Amy. I was very active in my church's youth group and her music was so important in my life. I got a chance to meet her in 2004, and it was definitely one of the highlights of my life so far. She's great!

I can draw a lot of parallel's to what I like about Stevie's music and Amy's music: great songwriting, unique voices, and music and lyrics that really connect with me on an emotional level.

I do appreciate most of the artists you al have listed as well--primarily Tom Petty and U2.

Well I do like other artists besides Mac/Nicks....so...

I do also collect Eagles/Don Henley too....also like:

Heart/Led Zepplin/Boston/Steely Dan--so awesome!!/Robert Plant/Dolly Parton/Steve Wariner/Nanci Griffith/Natalie Merchant/Annie Lennox/some Sheryl Crow/Dwight Yoakom/Eddie Rabitt/Sarah Brightman/Norah Jones/Bad Company--another band that totally rocks/Paul Rogers--incredible voice!!/Tom Petty/of course some of Lindsey Buckinghams solo stuff/Pink Floyd....I'm sure that I'm totally forgetting others too. I do like some Abba too......other country artists esp from the 70's & 80's (K.T. Oslon anyone or Sylvia)....before I'd gotten into Mac/Nicks etc....I was really into country from the 80's watched alot of TTNetwork back than.....I even got my letter read on Video Country show with Shelly Mangrom(spelling?) and a video played by Steve Wariner (cheesy video though) and a shirt from the show....cool!!!anyway.....thats all I recall right now.....if I think of others I'll edit this.....:thumbsup:
