My vote is Live in Boston. I think the organ parts come out a lot more, the presence of Lindsey on vocals and the fact that its a "Fleetwood Mac" version and not a "solo" performance make it great. I wish Christine was on it though. The Dance version was good, but seemed a bit dull and there was something dragging about the beat that made it seem off to me. Even if Stevie's voice was a little better able to handle the higher notes at that time and a little "sweeter".

YOU fail for even having the GALL to presume that a post-Dance "Rhiannon" is even worth listening to in any way-shape or form.

My vote is for Live in Chicago.

Not because of the audio, but because of the video. Love the outfit and the tophat! LOL. At least she was trying to give us some of the 70's Rhiannon with the outfit in that performance.

I like the disclaimer you added.

I'm going to go with Live in Boston although I like all of the above. I picked LIB because I prefer to hear the FM arrangement over solo...plus one of my favorite parts is Christine's keyboards after the middle of the song when it slows down. On the LIB performance you can hear Brett playing this part...but for some reason Christine did not seem to be playing these licks on the Dance performance of maybe they were buried in the mix?

I also could do without the piano slowed down version which they conveniently (for me) did not do on the SYW Tour.

I actually love almost every version of Rhiannon there is. It is the once Stevie song I can never get enough of. And I read in another post where someone said she should retire Rhiannon, but honestly, if I went to a Stevie concert and she didn't do Rhiannon, I'd be way let down. It is hard to pick which is my favorite because they are all different and amazing in their own way, but I'm going to have to go with the one from Soundstage.

Soundstage/Chicago because, even though it doesn't sound so good, Stevie is dressed appropriately & doesn't look ratty or tatty in her granny garb.

The Dance. Christine, Lindsey, John, and Mick make this version at least listenable. Her solo versions and the post-Christine Fleetwood Mac = blergh.

I have a lot of favorites, actually. They include:

Grammy 2010 with Taylor Swift.
4/15/2009 Philidelphia, PA
Rosebud
12/31/1996 (you know, the one that wasn't mass produced by Warner or Reprise.)

The Dance version I guess. As many already said, Rhiannon is just a pale shadow of what it used to be. The greatest performances were during the Rumours tour. It is still my favorite song ever probably. It's the song that got me into Fleetwood Mac, and you JUST CAN't top the rosebud Rhiannon.

Meh, The Dance holds a special place in my soul because its the first recording of "Rhiannon" that I ever heard. Plus, I love how she's visibly shaking in the end of the song... its definitely subdued, but I think this version is intense in its own weird way.

I think she does a good job on the Live in Boston version too, though. Eh, although "Rhiannon" isn't ANYTHING compared to what it was 30 years ago, I still think that the song has an impressive way of shifting to who Stevie is at the time that she sings it. I think its gained a little composure and class-- not necessary a bad thing, but its just not the exorcism we fell in love with anymore. Maybe I'm just biased because I'm in love with this song, but I can appreciate almost any version, even if its pretty boring. I just see "Rhiannon" to be a lot more than a song-- its a living, breathing entity to me, and it perfectly depicts Stevie at any given time.

Yes, those.

( Actually, if pressed, I'd probably go with Live in Boston. But that's mostly because of the production values - - The way the camera swings around, the way suspense is built, etc. The Dance was nice but obviously a lot more was put into Live in Boston, production-wise. )

Yeah, she's completely absorbed in her performance at that point, it's awesome. I think the vocals sound great myself. But yeah, as I think somebody said, Christine's keyboards are too soft in this. Kinda xylaphone-soundin'

Not the first version I heard, but I still love the Dance version, even if it can't match those earlier performances like the Rosebud, Midnight Special, and even Mirage ones.

Also, love when she sings "Sky ky kyyyy" and "All the same, baybeh, all the same" and then does her weird little wavey walk away from the mic. :]

edit: failed to mention, of course, that I haven't heard the LiB version yet

i agree, the LIB seems more wild and less controlled than the Dance. I just wish she had gone into her upper register for at least some of the "All the sames". That would have made it perfect.

I have conveniently forgotten about the Enchanted version of Rhiannon. That was dreadful.

Of those listed, I prefer The Dance version. Like Dani said, there's an intensity there, but in a subtle way. Plus, I've always liked how she sang, "Say, would you even try?" Live in Boston just seems like the elevator version of Rosebud.

But really, she should just put the old witch out to pasture and retire the song already.

My vote goes to the Crystal Visions Rhiannon hands down!! That version really rocks and just leaps from the speakers as if your standing right there in the concert hall. Whatever Waddy and Stevie tweaked in the studio worked, that live Rhiannon feels ALIVE!

Soundstage, visually was gorgeous, as David mentioned. The suede creme boots and bat wings....perfection:p .... That's the the get up I was hoping she would sport when she performed on the Grammys w Taylor, But knowing Stevie, she didn't want to show up or steal any of Taylors thunder....shame.

IS NO ONE ELSE BOTHERED BY THE LIPSYNCKING ON LIVE IN BOSTON!!?!?!?!?! I would have loved that one had there been a piano intro and a soundstage esq higher noted ending. BUT i cant even show that one to friends witch i hate because there are some cool moments with the outfit, but its all totally ruined by the WAAAAAAY to overdubbed and doubble vocal "dreams unwind loves a state of mind" where she is still singing and her face is no where NEAR the mic.:shocked::shocked::sorry:

THE dance piano intro is BEAUTIFUL. And the Higher TAKE ME LIKE THE WIND ect. gives me chills, THEN it stops. No "take me with you to the sky! Dreamer! ect. just her walkin away.

Crystal Visions, Rockin and alive but her vocals are even scratchier than they are in touched by an angel.

SoundStage isVisually Enchanting. LOVE the higher part at the end.

My IDEAL "New" Rhiannon would be a spliced together DANCE piano intro LIB verse one, and two, CRYSTAL VISIONS "dreams unwind part" untill the end where shes supposed to go up, THEN splice in the SONUNDSTAGE HIGHER "take me with you to the sky, u cant leave her" ect. ahhhhh, now THATS a Rhiannon.:lol:

I think this is due to editing, not lip-syncing (I'm assuming you meant lip-syncing). This type of editing glitch is all over the place on the Live In Boston DVD. It's not limited to Rhiannon.

There is lip matching vocals issues all over The Dance video too. I still think they prerecorded most the vocals for the Dance and did a lot of redos after the video. We will never have a pristine non messed with version of Fleetwood Mac like we do with some of the old Youtube videos from the 70's.

I suppose I would have to vote for "The Dance" version as the best of a bad lot. I give the edge to this version due to the following:
- The block harmonies on the chorus sound really great, much better than older live performances. It's one case where the additional backing vocalists really round out the sound.
- While she doesn't try for the vocal pyrotechnic finale like in the old days, she DOES at least hit the high C note a few times in the "Dreams unwind..." and "Take me like the wind..." lines. She also hit those notes on the Dance tour and the Enchanted tour the following year, then those high notes were gone forever.

Of course, this version was far from perfect. Personally, I wish they would have omitted the piano intro and offered up at least a truncated version of the blazing instrumental section from the 70s live version. And it was disappointing that she didn't even attempt any "dream on, silly dreamer" pyrotechnics at the end.

From these "Rhiannons" I have to choose The Dance one. Her voice is great there and I love the end of that there. Rhiannons from Soundstage and Live In Boston are good, average (for me as fan). And i dont know versions in Enchanted and Crystal Visions...:o but I know live performance of Rhiannon with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - that´s what is on Crystal Visions? I dont know... thats also average.

I would like to add that my very favourite Rhiannon is from any show of first tour in ´75-6 (just awesome), also that one from Mirage Live Video and of course from BTM and Timespace tour. Maybe Stevie wasn´t so good like in ´75 or ´97 but it definitely sounds great, one of the best. Rhiannon was very good these days I think.

I love the way you broke it into sections Phoenix. And its true certain aspects of the song have been really great in this modern era. The Dance is overall the weakest to me, but I love the way she keeps going higher and the Dreams Unwind part into the take me like the wind take me with the sky. You forgot one key section I feel. The since 2003 "Well I Don't Think You Do" I think Crystal Visions and LIB have the best there. Im gonna take your exact spliced Rhiannon but with CV's Well I Don't Think You Do. Unfortunutly the one area all these Rhiannons suck on is the "All The Same" sections. If she ever did that with feeling or dropped it all together I think Rhiannon wouldn't wouldnt be bad at all in modern times.

I think any Rhiannon past about '79 is painful to listen to :sorry:.

I think that statement makes zero sense whatsover. I'm sure you don't mean that but just felt like generalizing to make a bold statement. There are some INCREDIBLE Rhiannons post 79.

First of all if your implying that the last good tour for Rhiannon was the tusk tour then youd have to say any Rhiannon past 80' is painful.

The I'll give you the WWD Rhiannons were really really lackluster I enjoy them to an extent but i can fully understand people saying that its painful. BUT then one year later I think all the Mirage tour Rhiannons kicked serious ass. They're every bit as powerful as previous Rhiannon's. The only thing is I think its being played really inferior to prior tours, the guitar solo is just lousy.

I hadn't heard many Wild Heart tour versions until this past month when I can't find the thread so sorry for not remembering who posted it, whoever you were thank you for posting your best of the whild heart tour. Anyways on point the Rhiannon they posted was phenominal complete with lyrics at the end never heard before or after (Do you see her and i say Yes I Did)

Then the next 11 years are filled with some truly ****ty Rhiannons (RAL is OK but on a tour where i love pretty much all songs Rhiannon doesnt do it for me there) And BTM and Timespace were just too bad for words (I know I've heard some make the argument that there are some good Timespace versions but I've watched and heard many and no)

Then theres the Street Angel Tour. How can you watch either of those Rhiannons from the thread that should be on the first page of the board, and tell me that its painful. Its the excat opposite, complete with Rick Vito playing the riffs like the studio version for the first time ever live. They're incredible.

After that I''ll except your its painful to hear/watch any Rhiannon after 94. Its not painful for me unless were talking TISL tour, but it makes sense that someone would say they're painful.

Sorry Louie, but I take my favorite song and it's many live versions seriously aas you can see with my Live Rhiannon over the years essay.
