Here are some preliminary entries, off the top of my head:
"Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" - The Korgis
"Love Child" - Diana Ross
"Into The Night" - Benny Mardones
"Sister Golden Hair" - America
"Don't Give Up" - Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush
"Follow You Follow Me" - Genesis
"Only Love Can Break A Heart" - Gene Pitney (my favourite song on the radio station 1278 AM, which apparently plays the best songs of all time... I prefer 1377 AM though.)
This post is bound to be edited with a whole lot more entries... anyway, let's hear it from everyone else in the meantime!

Ooo, fun.

Let's see. In no particular order, and excluding obvious Mac-related items like Sara and Beautiful Child:

From Dead Can Dance:
"Song of the Sibyl" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j1lBFaYv70)
"Cantara" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVjmSfUEnJI) and
"Desert Song" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjy5TQiUuNQ) all from the amazing Toward the Within.

Eh, screw it - actually, the entirety of Toward the Within. Haha. If I believed in such a thing as the divine in a deity sense, I'd swear up and down that Lisa Gerrard is its mouthpiece. If you've never heard Dead Can Dance before, I urge you to check out those links. I also really love what she did for the movie Man on Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c1x55t51uc).

From Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds:

"Oh My Lord" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uny3pYb1fsI) - This is, to me, a perfect song. I'm pretty sure Warren Ellis is the bastard love child of Paganini and Rasputin.

"Into My Arms" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG0-cncMpt8) and "The Ship Song" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKlaV-9Vzsk) (yes, that's John Cale & Chrissie Hynde on the stage there - at one point in that show, they all do "Ship of Fools" together, very cool).

From Tori Amos:

This version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssuXZ_seN5Q) of "Doughnut Song" (with a little bit of "Apollo's Frock" at the beginning) from the 2 Meter Sessions. The wail on the "you can tell me" starting at about 4:48 kills me every time.

"Cooling" with the brambles bridge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2IpXHYjOcU). She very rarely plays the bridge live, which I think is a damn shame. It's my fav part of the song, and I have a future tattoo planned around it.

This particular live version of Led Zep's "Thank You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nunxgGQpSQ).

I also love this mash-up of "Whole Lotta Love" and "Thank You." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRg8UGQGXUE) That **** is HOT. When she starts belting out those "baby, baby, baby"s and "I, I, I"s, I get total goosebumps every time.

From Leonard Cohen:
"Dance Me to the End of Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki9xcDs9jRk)

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" It's just stunning. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83OIx5lwhY0) I love Leonard Cohen with a mad passion, but Buckley's version of his song is so good. I also like John Cale's version, but think Rufus Wainwright ought to knock it the hell off.

From The Sisters of Mercy:
"Some Kind of Stranger" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjy5TQiUuNQ)

The gorgeous piece "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dPS-EHl-FE) from Michael Nyman's amazing soundtrack for the movie The Piano.

ETA: Forgot some! Fear Factory's "Resurrection" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGgqJI0Hpmg) & Opeth's "Harvest" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxaFANthouM) and anything off of The Gathering's Mandylion.

This was such a good idea for a thread. I am finding all sorts of songs I never really listened to before thanks to y'all.

I wanted to add 2 more:

This cover of Tom Waits' "Time" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xdhwXIzFKY) done by Tori Amos makes me cry. I love Waits, but this performance always makes me tear up not only because she does it beautifully but because this was the first episode of Letterman after 9/11. It's so heartfelt that I'm pretty sure Dave's trying not to cry at the end when he hugs her. It's beautiful.

And I'll throw this one in because while this is a spoken word version, there's also a song version. Leonard Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses Deep." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YygNf2PW2S4) I like it done as spoken word much better than the song version, it's fantastic. I got to hear him do this at the show I was lucky enough to attend, and I think I held my breath the whole time. "My mirror twin, my next of kin, I'd know you in my sleep. And who but you would take me in, a thousand kisses deep?"

I wouldnt consider myself a madonna fan really, but that album is just great. I think the song Ray of Light itself is my least favorite even though it was probably the biggest hit. Overall its a really great and relaxing album in its own techno sort of way...

Just a few additions...
"Mind Games" - John Lennon
"Father And Son" - Cat Stevens
"Wings Of An Eagle" - Russel Morris
"Fast Car" - Tracy Chapman
"It Never Rains In Southern California" - Albert Hammond
"Moonlight Lady" - Albert Hammond/Julio Iglesias
"Ain't No Sunshine" - Bill Withers
"Just The Two Of Us" - Grover Washington Jr./Bill Withers
"Another Day In Paradise" - Phil Collins
"Blue Eyes" - Elton John

"Romeo's Tune" - Steve Forbert
"Valerie" - Steve Winwood
"State Of The Heart" - Rick Springfield
"Fall At Your Feet" - Crowded House
"Message To My Girl" - Split Enz (almost an all time favourite of mine for quite a while)
"Bitter Sweet Symphony" - The Verve (ditto above)
"Nights In White Satin" - The Moody Blues (buy the 2008 remaster of their Days Of Future Passed album immediately if you haven't already! )
"Cello Suite Prelude" - Bach (A classical music entry)
And any songs from Roxy Music's Avalon album. And pretty much any songs by Dido... let alone CM and SN!
Also, "Imagine" - John Lennon, but that's always implied! Actually, there are of course too many Lennon songs that are beautiful to pragmatically list, but "MG" and "I" are the most beautiful of all!
There are so many other beautiful songs I will probably never be able to mention them all. However, everyone else here seems to be doing a pretty good job of it (with several songs listed I also find beautiful (mostly the pre-90s material))! :blob2:
Keep them coming! I know I will!

Well, I'll give this a shot.. my list won't be very varied. My parents didn't let us kids listen to anything outside old country, pop from the 50s-60s, cajun music and bluegrass, and even some of AKUS's albums caused a mini scandal, with songs titled Let Me Touch You For a While. Hehehe.

Didn't start branching out til I was 20, when I found out mah favorite singer was making an album with the Led Zep dude. So I checked out some Led Zeppelin, loved it, and listened to whatever I felt like since. OK... blah blah blah, here's my list:

Alison Krauss; New Favorite, When You Say Nothing at All, Borderline
with Robert Plant; Polly Come Home, and Please Read the Letter
Led Zeppelin; Going to California, Battle of Evermore
Nickel Creek; Why Should the Fire Die? Seven Wonders, When You Come Back Down
Simon and Garfunkel; Sounds of Silence, Scarborough Fair
Kate Bush; Wuthering Heights, Moving, Suspended in Gaffa
the Duhks; I See You,Turtle Dove, Annabel
Ron Block; Someone, Blackness of the Need..( he doesn't have an amazing voice, but he writes amazing songs )
Collective Soul; The World I Know
Fleet Foxes; Mykonos, White Winter Hymnal
Foo Fighters; Acoustic version of Times Like These
Linda Ronstadt; Blue Bayou (reminds me of home :D)
The Beatles; Hey Jude, Yesterday, Something
the Cranberries; Linger
The Carpenters; Goodbye to Love, Close to You
the Killers; All These Things That I've Done
the Shins; New Slang
Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Maps
Sean Watkins; Let it Fall
Yasunori Mitsuda; Unstolen Jewel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D8Cz9kHYFQ) Gotta throw a videogame track in here  Nerd cred.

Instrumental Stuff -
Chris Thile; Raining at Sunset.. Actually ALL of Not All Who Wander Are Lost
Bela Fleck; Throw Down You Heart, The Over Grown Waltz, Three Bridges Home
Jerry Douglas: We Hide and Seek
Bryan Sutton: Walk Among the Woods
Alison Brown; Hello Mendocine, Without Anastasia

This is off the top of my head.

Love this thread, gotta lot of new stuff to check out from it.

And a handful more...
"Your Latest Trick" - Dire Straits (btw, "Sultans Of Swing" is a near favourite song for me)
"Great Southern Land" - Icehouse
"Black Velvet" - David Tyson/Christopher Ward/Alannah Myles/Robin Lee
"Sparrow Song" - The Seekers
"We Belong" - Pat Benatar
"Anyone Who Had A Heart" - Burt Bacharach/Hal David/Cilla Black
"Orinoco Flow" - Enya
And all the songs on Sting's album Soul Cages. And mostly anything by Alan Parson's Project, Al Stewart and Don McLean...
(As a side, my favourite DM song is "Everybody Loves Me Baby", which I wouldn't consider beautiful, but most enjoyable!)
And, just for the sake of it...
"Brown Eyes" - Fleetwood Mac
It deserves a special mention, even though almost any song by CM or SN is beautiful...
Also, I'm sure that I'm not the only one musing over how quite a few of the most beautiful songs have quite depressing themes...

Well, who didn't do Grease? My sister and I totally wore out the album, we used to do little 'shows' in our backyard. The only song I was allowed to participate in were the Danny songs, but in truth I wanted to sing Hopelessly Devoted To You or Sandy's part in You're The One That I Want. We even made fake cigarettes to do the scene where she gets dressed up as the biker chick, LOL.
I had a portable phonograph, the kind that was like a suitcase and you could carry. Grease and the Saturday Night Fever album got much airplay.

Did you ever do backyard shows? Here's a controversial one we did: Donna Summer's famous 'Bad Girls' album. Picture THAT, a bunch of 9 year olds pretending to be hookers. We even made a fake streetlight for one of the girls to pose under, swinging her purse waiting for a John, LOL!!!!!

Just off the top of my head:

Albatross - Fleetwood Mac

FINALLY! (chiliD saves that day) Those who are not pre-1975 Fleetwood Mac fans need to hear this instrumental, along with Danny Kirwan's "Sunny Side of Heaven". While I'm not going to question the choices some of you list, you may want to check into the back yard of the band forum you post, you may be surprised.

For years one of my favorite Beatle songs was "Sun King" from "Abbey Road". I would certainly list it in the beautiful category. It was years later I learned that "Sun King" came from Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross". Just a thought.

An unusual choice for a beautiful song, but also an unusual choice for a Ravel composition. Have you heard the final section of Ravel's "Ma mere l'oye" ballet music suite? It's called "The Enchanted Garden" (or "The Fairy Garden").

I think it is beautiful and extremely sexy at the same time. It starts off real soft and low, then starts to blend and holds real steady, until the full experience and climax of the song, so fragile and powerful at the same time. I have not heard the other suggestions you mentioned but I will give them a listen. I also really love Carmen.
Those are my two favorite classical pieces.

There's a version of Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine" that is amazing.
I have no idea who the female singer was, but she changed the lyric a bit, to 'come on, give me your heart, I'll keep it with mine' and it was a dreamy, gorgeous performance- the original Dylan lyric was 'come on, give it to me, I'll keep it with mine'-- but the 'give me your heart' change made it an even more beautiful song.
I wonder if it may have been Sandy Denny, who had recorded it with Dylan's original lyric with Fairport Convention and maybe later re-recorded it, solo, I don't know. It certainly is not the version by Nico!
Suzanna Hoffs did a Stevie-ish take of the song on an album; and while she isn't the singer Stevie Nicks is, the recording seems Stevie-esque to me. It's on youtube, but can't compare to the version I've been trying to find forever.

The out-take of just Janis Joplin playing guitar and singing 'Me and Bobby McGee' on the Legacy 2 cd expanded edition of 'Pearl' has a lot of beauty, sensitivity and nuance that was masked in the released, hit version. It's folk music, without the slurring of the word 'McGee' in the hit version and hearing it feels like a peak into what her soul was, but in an understated way, which makes it the version for me, now .
Others mentioned 'All I Know' by Art Garfunkel, and surely, it's a gorgeous vocal and recording.
For some reason, Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" and "Like A Hurricane' are beyond beautiful to me, as are Linda Ronstadt's covers of Neil's "I Believe In You" and "Look Out For My Love."
Gay as it may be of me to think so, I think Streisand's version of 'Memory' from Cats is a beautiful vocal and recording. When my testosterone side kicks in, and it does, nothing is more beautiful to me than the original 'Layla' by Derek And The Dominoes. When it calms down, Roberta Flack's versions of 'Jesse' and 'Suzanne' are both really beautiful, to me. She takes the beauty in the poetry of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" further than in any version of it I've heard. Gosh, many of these songs remind me of my late cousin, she shared a lot of music with me, and was older, and knew more.
Someone mentioned 'Morning Has Broken' by Cat Stevens, who was another favorite of my cousin's, Susa, and though I haven't heard it in more than 20 years, my memory of it is that yes, it was extremely beautiful. As was 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'-- though I can't say I like Judy Collins a whole lot, my cousin sure did, and it's a beautiful performance and song.
( And it always makes me think of Susa, eyes closed and lungs exhaling heavily and breathily, singing along to 'Who Knows'...)

Led Zeppelin:Going To California/Stairway To Heaven/Dazed & Confused/Communication Breakdown/....more...
Don Henley: The Heart Of The Matter/My Thanksgiving/New York Minute/The Boys Of Summer/End Of The Innocence/Talking To The Moon/Sunset Grill/Everything Is Different Now.....more....
K.T. Oslin: 80's Ladies/Do Ya/....
Steve Wariner: Life's Highway/Some Fools Never Learn/What I didn't Do/Starting Over Again/I Should Be With You/.....
Dolly Parton: Jolene/Coat Of Many Colors/I'll Always Love You/Here You Come Again/Its All Wrong But Its Alright/Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle To You/Potential New Boyfriend/more....
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb/Wish You Were Here/Run Like Hell/more....
Natalie Merchant: Wonder/Carnival/Break Your Heart/These Are The Days/Kind & Generous/Life Is Sweet/Ophelia....etc.
