I just ran across this site http://dailyroutines.typepad.com/ and found it really interesting. People have so many quirks that are revealed by what they do every day.
My daily routine is probably considered a right mess by most folks, but it works for me. I sleep while the kids are at school and do all my work at night because I can't function properly before noon no matter how much sleep I've had. I like how 4:30 AM looks, but I have not the fortitude to actually wake myself up at 4 AM to see it, so that works out pretty well.

The only daily routine I really have that is always guaranteed... is that I have to take a #2 in the morning... and it's always after I've had a shower.

Ha!
I'm also self-employed. I discovered that while being freelance can be scary, it's worth it to me to be able to yell "I DO WHAT I WANT" and mean it, even though this time of year is never kind to those in my field.

i'm self employed too~ but i open my daycare at 6 am, close it at 5 pm~ i can't sleep past 5 am for anything, i don't care if i just went to bed, when it turns 5, my eyes open on their own~ even if i have been tying one on, those damn eyelids, manage to pop right open~
i am very routine-ish~ w/ everything in my life~ i am anal about cleaning & vacuuming everyday, i have to do it or i can't sleep~ i make my bed right when i wake up, even before having to go in for the morning tinkle~
i don't freak tho if things get off track tho, having a kid has taught me tons of patience, i can get things going again w/out a hitch~ & i am one helluva multi tasker:nod:~

Sadly I'm the same although I can usually function by about 10am after a couple of cups of coffee. Sadly I start work at 9am. My manager (there are only two of us in the store) is the same, so any customers turning up before that first coffee are greeted with two surly sarcastic salesmen.
We will even make customers wait while we make a cup of coffee. Anyone who is sitting outside the shop before 9am deserves to be made to wait.

I commend you for having all that discipline. Though maybe it's not really discipline if it's what comes natural to you? I don't know.
I have the relative luxury of choosing my own hours simply because I'm a writer. I do have deadlines, but I try to make sure those deadlines don't mean I have to wake up to send something in at 9 AM or something. When I get hired for a long-term project, I usually tell people flat out that if they email me during the day and I don't answer right away, it's not because I'm ignoring them, but because of the hours I keep.
Unless they are paying me a higher rate than usual, of course. Then I will adjust accordingly.

Ahhh, I hear ya. I had a "regular" job for a time before I went freelance, where I went into the office right after I herded my kids onto the school bus. I didn't end up actually waking up, though, until around noon. After a time, they closed the office and we all scattered to the four winds and worked from home. I thought at first that this would be excellent - work in my pajamas! I don't have to brush my hair, because no clients will be here! No one can tell my surly-cos-I'm-too-tired-to-give-a-damn-about-your-problems tone of voice via email! Huzzah!
Wrong! I found that, for that particular job - and I think this is likely a problem a lot of work from home types that aren't their own boss experience - is that my superiors decided that since I was at home, that meant I was ALWAYS at work. If they emailed me at midnight and I didn't reply right away, it was like, "Where are you?????" Pfft, back off.

If I lived alone, I would follow your schedule! I am a total night person!! Right now, though, I awaken at 6:45 am, 5 to 6 days a week. I have tried sleeping in the day, but it never works because people call me even when I ask them not to. I would turn off the phone, but my son has a lot of medical problems, so I need to be available, just in case. I never feel awake until it's almost time to go to sleep!! I usually go to bed at 11 pm. In the morning, I'm fixing lunches, making sure my son takes his medicines, fixing up medicine for later in the day, making sure everyone leaves the house with what they need for the day. During the day, I do whatever needs done (house cleaning, bill paying, laundry etc.). In the evening, I'm helping with homework, cooking dinner, making sure everyone has everything they'll need for the next day. I have a lot to remember every day (and it seems I'm getting worse at remembering it!) On the weekends, I try to just find some time to sit down!!!

I can't believe it but I actually slept until 11:00am today! Eight solid hours of sleep.
unfrickin believable! I feel so well rested. I had some interesting dreams. I dreamt about Stevie's new song with Peter Asher, I dreamt about my deceased cat Snifflitt. After Convincing her to join me in the car I took her to a cat school where they taught her how to communicate with me using colors on sticks. It was cool. She learned the trick in less than 3 hours. Then I dreamt I went to the bank with my friend Donna who lives in Indiana. I dreamt about Donna two mights in a row, I wonder what this means? Anyway we were in the bank and the teller was cashing my check and tried to give me fake money. I told her to get her supervisor and the bitch took the cashiers side and tried to intimidate me. All the other cashiers clapped for their bosses behavior and then the boss said she was calling the cops on me! Donna and I scooted outta there quickly, as if we were the bad guys. The next dream had me going to a friends house looking for my car and her mother telling me the friend drove it to another location. So I went in the house to wait and there were these weird cat sized spiders-3 of them-running around her living room and I was terrified and the mom of my friend wasn't and then Snifflitt appeared and scared the spiders into the wall.
I know this spider dream came from me being freaked out by Shane's(fringed and fab) story of that hairy creature coming in and out of the living room walls in some lady's house.

Noon, is the earliest, I EVER want to be up. I'm happy getting up between 7:30 & 8, having breakfast, showering, getting dressed, & starting my day!
But sometimes I like to get up at dawn to do some yoga or meditation, which puts my soul in balance with my body.

I'm in the morning person camp. I wake up at 5am, take the dogs for a run on the shore and then get into work about 6.30. I love driving through Chicago at that time in the morning, particularly in the summer. I finish mid afternoon. If I know I have to work, I just don't see the point of staying in bed - I may as well get up and get the work done.

You are a busy bee! I suppose I am also that busy, but just on the opposite side of the clock. I go to sleep after I get the kids on the bus and then wake up when they get home to do dinner, homework, cleaning, etc, until I shove them into bed and then I get my work-work done.
I had some interesting dreams.
I've been dreaming a lot about zombie invasions lately, but that's just cos I've been playing too much Resident Evil 5.

Yeah, I've never been good at mornings. School was a special kind of hell for me because of it. I've read off and on since I graduated high school about them considering starting school later in the day because kids aren't built to function properly that early in the morning, but I haven't seen anyone go through with it yet.

I'm up around 5:15am and out the door by 6. I'm home by 3:40, when I immediately sit on the couch and get on the computer until the girls get home at 4:15. That is my only alone time during the day, so I make sure to do exactly what I want to do in that half hour. After they get home, it's cook, clean, help with homework, showers, and bed. Boring stuff.

I've read all about this as well, but I've read more on the part that elementary aged children can actually function better in mornings, while high schoolers function better later on. I've always thought school start times were a bit backward in that elemenetary started after the high school. It really should be the other way around. I see the point in starting high school earlier though, because it gets them ready for the real world and having to get up and be somewhere first thing. (well, for most jobs...) But for my daughter, she would function better if she could stay awake long enough to pass her algebra class... haha!

Yeah, little kids are awesome at getting up really early. My son will be 10 soon, and I've noticed over the years, though, that he's less and less spry in the AM. He used to bounce out of bed at 6 AM like nobody's business.
I've always thought it was backwards, too, but I think they have the high school kids go earlier so they can get out earlier to maybe watch little brothers and sisters after school or go to a job or something? I know that around here, the high school bus drops off the older kids and that gives them about 20 minutes or more before the little kids' bus comes and drops them off.
It's probably also to do with getting ready for the real world, too, though.
All through high school, I got stuck with physics or bio or chem or statistics first thing in the morning. It was HORRIBLE. I was always dazed.

Let's see. Wake up at 5:30, leave my house by 6:30 (yes, it takes a full hour for me to get dressed/do my hair and makeup/make myself an egg white omelette), Starbucks run at 6:35, at school by 7. My first class rarely starts earlier than 9:20, though, because I have a free period. So during that time, I get any extra homework finished, work on our literary magazine and grade THOUSANDS of tests/writing assignments, etc. for the English teacher that I TA for.
I go to my three 85-minute classes and get out at 2:30. I'm still at school until 4, though, because I usually have extra curricular-related stuff to get done. Planning our monthly open mic poetry/music nights, putting up flyers, socializing with teachers, getting homework done, working on the magazine....
I get home by 5:30 or so, do homework for an hour, and then usually go grab a casual dinner (CHIPOTLE!) with a friend. My mom used to cook a lot but now, our schedules are so conflicting that it isn't possible most of the time. Then I do homework while procrastinating on the Ledge/Facebook for a while, and I usually go to bed somewhere between 1AM and 3AM.

Early bird, here. :wavey:
I am up at 6:30 and out of the house by 8:00. Of course it doesn't take me that long to get ready, but I do not like to be rushed in the morning. I like to hang out with Laney, have some coffee, and be leisurely. That way I don't feel as though I'm working.
I don't start seeing clients until 9, so I'm usually answering emails, or catching up on paperwork until then. Then I see clients. All day. Borderline, depression, anxiety, PTSD. Two hours of each day is devoted to doing clinical assessments for the local Mental Health- they send us walk in referrals.
After work (around 5-6ish), I pick up Laney and we come home, fix something to eat and play! Jeff usually gives L her bath and then we hang out together and watch TV. I am in bed by 9:00pm. I read for an hour or two, almost always asleep by 11pm.
On Tuesdays I don't go in until noon- I have a group on Tuesday nights and I see clients late.
This sure is fascinating, isn't it?

It is to me, but I'm probably broken in the head or something. I'm always curious about what other people are doing. Like, when I walk down the street or whatever, and look at houses or see people in cars, I wonder, "What are they doing? Why are they doing it? Do they wish they were doing something else?"
Not in a creepy stalker way, though. I'm just curious about people.

Your routine sounds like mine... my alarm goes off at 4:50 am so i can choose if i feel like getting up then or waiting till 5:15 when my alarm goes off again..im in the shower and out by 5:30..dressed by 5:40, my hair usually doesn't take that long if i didnt wash it or something the night before and if not i can just unwrap it and part it then im done..i dont really wear alot of makeup just eyeliner and mascara...then i have to find my books and stuff for school because my classes change everyday.
my first period is spanish and my teacher is a real dick so that means we spend the whole hr of his class working and listening to him talk about how he is always right. he also likes to talk about the girlfriends he has and his wife in puerto rico (this guy like spray paints his side burns =\ )..im usually at school til 5:30 or 6 because i have/had track practice (i had to quit because im just too busy this year) and i have a science fair project to work on and make up work. i've been staying at school recently because my mother lost her job and i really dont want to be home all day with her plus she enjoys the time alone. during tennis season i will be at school even longer especially on game day (i usually have really good games that last awhile). when i get home i start with the easy homework and then im talking to friends on facebook or texting one of them for a while. I go to bed at 11 or 12 except for on the days i have an APUSH assignment that i procrastinated on, then im up til around 2-2:30. the only time i sleep in is on the weekends unless i have community service programs which i have a lot of this year because i am a CENS student. my mother spends the weekends, sometimes, over her boyfriend's house in maryland so i get to spend the weekend by myself... if i wasn't a trustworthy child you could imagine the parties i could have since i have a lot of friends who would come

I think that's that block scheduling. My sister's high school was like that.
Mine was as well, but it was four 80 minutes classes. The days were named A-F, you had four of the same class on A, C and E days in a different order, than the other four classes on B, D and F days. It was kind of helpful, that way you didn't always have the same class at the beginning of the day.
My routine is pretty boring. I'm extremely low maintenance in the mornings. I get up around 8:45 and I leave the house by 9:10. Usually at work by 9:45 and work until 6. On nights that I don't meet up with friends for dinner, I come home and relax. In the spring and the fall, I see a lot of theater so on those nights, I don't get home until after 11. Then repeat!

Why do you like it?
I see more and more schools implementing it, so I wonder if my kids will encounter it one day. To me, 80-85 minutes in one class seems like an eternity. I remember barely wanting to focus on a teacher for 45 minutes.
We did have longer classes like that three times a week, for a science, when you had a "lab" scheduled. So when it was your lab day, you just stayed in physics or whatever for the next period, too, and when it wasn't lab day, you had study hall. But lab days didn't seem like too much of a hassle, since when you had a lab, you were up out of your seat, doing experiments or something.
Is it like that? I remember my sister saying she enjoyed her block scheduling, but I don't remember her reasoning.

lately i've been working 2nd shift with some 3rd shift thrown in for sh*ts and giggles. my "normal" routine is something like ... sleep from 4 am - 12 or 1 pm, shower, breakfast (corn flakes and coffee) at 1:30, read the news/a book/blogs till i leave for work at 3:30. sometimes i opt for irritating people on the ledge in lieu of reading aforementioned news/book/blogs.
however, i'm also notorious for pulling all nighters. because sometimes you just need to have a lady gaga dance party/twirl in shawls to RAL/drink until dawn and then hit a diner*. right?
so my "routine" is pretty flexible, but this is non-negotiable:
when i get up, i have corn flakes and half a carafe of coffee and then finish my coffee on the front porch with a cigarette.

Mostly Broadway and some off-Broadway. I tend to see whatever is new early in its run and oftentimes in previews, which is why the majority of it happens in the fall and spring.
And to continue the block scheduling conversation, I found it really helpful when I went to college because I was already used to long class periods while a lot of people in my courses had come from a more traditional scheduling and the 75 minute classes killed them, especially early morning ones.

Wow. I wouldn't call that "normal" either... we only had 6 classes, one hour and 5 min each... then 30 min for lunch.

No, not normal? I have no idea. They might've been shorter than 45 minutes, but I don't think so. I do know there were 8 periods a day, though. I always had Spanish 8th period for all 4 years of school, and then OUT-OUT-OUT. Haha.
I was not fond of high school.

Well, I graduated in 2000, so not that long after you. As far as I know, the high school I went to still does it the same way now. We'll see how it is in Missouri when I get there at the end of the week, though.

What sort of theater do you see?
I had the exact same schedule, and I graduated in '08. You grew up in either Eastern OH or Western PA, right? I'm basing this more on your penchant for smiley cookies than just our high school schedule similarity.
My routine over this winter break has basically been wake up at noon, check my email (first thing I do no matter what the rest of the day looks like. It's a little pathetic), practice the piano, generic by myself time (facebook/reading/watching HGTV because I'm classy), and then in the evenings, I drive the hour to my old hometown and spend time with friends from high school. Depending on what time I get home from that, I'll either spend time with my family (this consists mainly of drinking and having dance parties. There's not much of a transition from the time with friends) or I'll bake late night cookies and brownies. The day always closes off with episodes of The Nanny. Always.
I was about to type out my routine when I'm back at school, but it's almost less interesting than the above was, and I don't want to think about the fact that I go back tomorrow.

Oh, you, too! Would like to hear what you think, as well. You replied when I was sending my last one in, lol.
85 mins isn't actually that long after you get use to it actually feels normal..back in middle school the classes were all 1 hr and now 1 hr seems so short. my first period is an hour and we hardly have enough time to get anything done..ever (not that im complaining because i really hate that teacher). the first high school i went to the hrs were a little different and were all the same length so we had to stay in school 50 minutes longer than i do now.
I have 7 classes altogether with Spanish as my homeroom so i have to go there everyday. the classes alternate between even days (1246) and odd days (1357) but at the first high school i went to, in berkley, mondays were "speed days" meaning that we went to every class on that day, tuesdays were even days, wednesday odd, thursday even, etc.. but on every first monday of the month we had late start speed days (why? i have no idea) so we went to school at 10: 15am. At the school i go to now, every wednesday is a flex day meaning that we go to our first period for 10 mins and then we "flex out" to whatever class we need extra help in (we have to have a pass to that class) but if we dont need extra help we go to the class we are scheduled to go to for that flex period for 45 minutes. At my old school in berkley we had a study hall period on odd days which was exactly the same as the flex periods i have now.
But i do know that there are some schools that don't have block scheduling at all. My sister's high school had the same scheduling as middle school where we went to the same class every single day. =\

It's interesting reading how everyones classes are set up. At my school, we have 4 classes from Aug to Jan, and 4 new classes from Feb to June. Each class is 90 minutes long, and they go in the same order everday. I like it this way. In middle school the order of the classes changed and I really don't see much benefit for that. It seems like my school is holding us too long now after reading your schedules! My school also starts at the crack of dawn, I get up at 5:55 every school morning.

At my high school, we took eight subjects, but had only 7 classes a day. The system was confusing. The days were day 0 through day 7. On day 0, you had the first 7 classes on your schedule. On days 1 through 7, you had an alternate class during the period that coincided with the day (example Day 1, alternate class for 1st period, Day 2, alternate class for 2nd period, and so on.) Classes were 54 minutes long. Lunch was 20 minutes. (I graduated in 1992)

Woah, school in America is soooo different that school in England.
I'm in college and we go there for two years aged 16 - 18, studying 4 subjects (Sometimes 5)
I have a morning routine but not an evening one. Every morning, I wake up at 6.15 to shower and wash my hair. Then I go back to my room (sometimes going on the computer) to dress. Then I put my makeup on and dry/style my hair in that order. at 7.30 I go downstairs and have some cereal, tea and toast before leaving to catch my train at 8.03 :)

Damned if I remember much of high school, but I'm pretty sure my schedule was similar to Zombie's (8 periods, about 45 minutes each, lunch may have beeen a bit shorter.)
Although in Jr. year I was in vocational school already, so I had normal HS classes all morning, then got like a 90 min. break to drive to the vocational school (which translated into lunch at Burger King every day for Bacon Double Cheeseburgers & cigarettes :D ) My afternoons ran longer than "normal" high school and I was in 1 class (health assistant.)
Sr. year was the opposite - nursing (LPN) school all morning, "normal" high school in the afternoon.
So. Now. Weekdays. Get up around 6am. Let dog out. Feed dog & cats. Work out (cardio) for 30 min. Breakfast (usually either cereal, milk & fruit or a bagel with PB.) Pack lunch. Shower & dress. Get baby, change her & bring her downstairs. Bottle then cereal for her. Leave for work by 8:30am. Work 9am - 5pm, lunch around 1pm. Usually home by 5:15pm if I get out on time. Eat dinner (which hopefully husband has already prepared) and feed baby again. Hang out with fam, read paper/mail, watch TV. In bed by 10:30pm hopefully.
I take the 2 weekend days off from working out. "Sleep in" til 7:30 or so.

I guess that makes sense if you are used to it. It just seems crazy long to me. Of course, I never wanted to be in school at all - it was a special sort of hell to me - so that may explain my misgivings about the idea.

Oh man, you were lucky. Our tech was literally a 5 (10 if you walked reeeeeally slow) minute walk from the back door of the high school. No going to Burger King.
But it's funny that I do mostly remember my years of high school by when/how I could get in a cigarette. Freshman year was easy as pie, just step out the door, no one cares. But by senior year, they'd chased us completely off campus into the woods across the street and tried to give us inside and junk for it. Oy. Morons.

We'd hear Gloria coming in, and she'd say "Maria, get yo ass outta here, giiirl! You bet not let that dean find yo ass! Get on, now..." And she'd walk me to class sometimes. My first two years of High School,(89,90) you could smoke if you were 16 and over. They had a special area. After that, the law changed to 18 being the legal age to buy cigs. I never smoked, so it didn't matter to me :)

No, I don't think you can do that anymore. My freshman year of high school, we'd just step outside the door and no one cared. We also used to congregate in the corner of the parking lot before school. Sophomore year, they chased us over the guardrail and onto the curb. Junior year, they chased us across the street. By my senior year, we had to go into the woods or the rent-a-cops they'd hired would write us up and try to give us inside.
But even then, we had one rent-a-cop named Bowser that would come INTO the woods and try to bust us, so we moseyed over to the cemetary that was across the street and kind of catty-corner to the school.
And I **** you not, dude was, like, wearing a ghillie suit or something sometimes. He was old and crotchety and would hide in bushes to try to bust us, and then leap out all, "I'VE GOT YOU NOW!" We'd scatter to the four winds, and since he was old, he couldn't run fast enough to catch all of us. You didn't have to run the fastest, you just had to not be the slowest. I liked to think of it as good practice for the coming zombie apocalypse. ;)
We had a joke, though, that if you saw a jaggerbush skittering in a zig-zag pattern across the road (y'know, like the cartoons where someone's hiding in a bush or a barrel and is trying to sneak up on someone else by tip-toeing about when they think you're not looking?) you should huck your backpack at it and run.
Ahhhh, memories.
Oh, man, we used to smoke in the bathroom all the damn time.
I dunno what it's like in my old school now, but I assume it's similar. We technically got our rent-a-cops when Columbine happened, which is a tale of woe and hilarity that still amuses me to this day (not what happened at Columbine, but my school's reaction to it, and tangentially, their reaction to me), but I also hear violence up there has gotten really bad, which disconcerts me.
Kids these days, man.

Haha. I consider my smoking a public health service. As in, if I didn't do it, there'd be a lot of bodies on the floor. It keeps my homicidal mania down to a dull roar.
So I've made a career out of knowing where and when I can smoke - particularly when it comes to airports and suchlike. Go ahead, ask me about any U.S. airport - I can probably tell you if they have a smoking lounge still or a bar that allows smoking, where it's located, and how long it will take me to get from the United gates (I usually only fly United due to relative cheapness & my miles card) to said smoking area and back for my connector.

Well, sometimes my daughter will join me, but whatever. I'ma do the Gypsy video prance around my house if'n I wanna.
Also, I lied about going to diners alone. I haven't done it in ages, but I used to do it when I had the chance when the kids were younger. I'd leave them with their dad every so often on the excuse that I had to go grocery shopping, and bringing groceries and babies on the bus is such a hassle.
Which it is, but also, "OMG, I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE, HALP!"
Then I'd sneak into a restaurant somewhere for a half an hour and have a snack and read a book and breathe. It kept me semi-sane.

I try to always arrange flights that will have a layover to have it either through Detroit or Dulles, for their smoking areas are easy to get to. Dulles has more than one, and the bartenders in the DTW smoking bar are pleasant to talk to even if they won't make me nachos at 8 AM.
